Pt deposited on a Ge(001) surface spontaneously forms nanowire arrays. These nanowires are thermodynamically stable and can be hundreds of atoms long. The nanowires only occur on a reconstructed Pt-Ge-surface where they fill the troughs between the dimer rows on the surface. This unique connection between the nanowires and the underlying substrate make a thorough understanding of the latter necessary for understanding the growth of the nanowires. In this paper we study possible surface reconstructions containing 0.25 and 0.5 of a monolayer of Pt. Comparison of calculated STM images to experimental STM images of the surface reconstruction reveal that the Pt atoms are located in the top layer, creating a structure with rows of alternating Pt-Ge and Ge-Ge dimers in a c(4x2) arrangement. Our results also show that Pt atoms in the second or third layer can not be responsible for the experimentally observed STM images.
Far from being conclusively understood, the reactive interaction of water with rutile does still present a challenge to atomistic modelling techniques rooted on quantum mechanics. We show that static geometries of stoichiometric TiO$_2$/water interfaces can be described well by Density Functional Tight Binding (DFTB). However, this method needs further improvements to reproduce the low dissociation propensity of H$_2$O after adsorption predicted by Density Functional Theory (DFT). A reliable description of the surface reactivity of water is fundamental to investigate the non-stoichiometric rec…
The conversion of graphene into diamond is a new way for preparing ultrathin diamond film without pressure. Herein, we investigated the transformation mechanism of surface-hydrogenated bilayer graphene (SHBG) into surface-hydrogenated single-layer diamond (SHSLD) crystal, inserting fifteen kinds of single metal atoms without any pressure, by using the systematical first-principles calculations. Compared with the configuration without metal atom, SHBG can be transformed into SHSLD spontaneously in thermodynamics under the action of single metal atom, and its formation energy can even decrease f…
Low dimensional structures comprised of ferroelectric (FE) PbTiO$_3$ (PTO) and quantum paraelectric SrTiO$_3$ (STO) are hosts to complex polarization textures such as polar waves, flux-closure domains and polar skyrmion phases. Density functional theory (DFT) simulations can provide insight into this order, but, are limited by the computational effort needed to simulate the thousands of required atoms. To relieve this issue, we use the novel multi-site support function (MSSF) method within DFT to reduce the solution time for the electronic groundstate whilst preserving high accuracy. Using MSS…

We present a computational approach which is tailored for reducing the complexity of the description of extended systems at the density functional theory level. We define a recipe for generating a set of localized basis functions which are optimized either for the accurate description of pristine, bulk like Wannier functions, or for the \emph{in situ} treatment of deformations induced by defective constituents such as boundaries or impurities. Our method enables one to identify the regions of an extended system which require dedicated optimization of the Kohn-Sham degrees of freedom, and provi…
The 7\times7 reconstruction of the Si(111) surface represents arguably the most fascinating surface reconstruction so far observed in nature. Yet, the atomistic mechanism underpinning its formation remains unclear after it was discovered sixty years ago. Experimentally, it is observed post priori so that analysis of its formation mechanism can only be carried out in analogy with archaeology. Theoretically, density-functional-theory (DFT) correctly predicts the Si(111)-(7\times7) ground state but is impractical to simulate its formation process; while empirical potentials failed to produce it a…
Distortions of the oxygen octahedra influence the fundamental electronic structure of perovskite oxides, such as their bandwidth and exchange interactions. Utilizing a fully ab-initio methodology based on density functional theory plus dynamical mean field theory (DFT+DMFT), we study the crystal and magnetic structure of SrMoO$_3$. Comparing our results with DFT+$U$ performed on the same footing, we find that DFT+$U$ overestimates the propensity for magnetic ordering, as well as the octahedral rotations, leading to a different ground state structure. This demonstrates that structural distortio…
Antiphase domain boundaries (APDBs) in the ($n \times 1$)($n=4,5$) reconstructions of the SrTiO$_3$(110) surface were studied with scanning tunneling microscopy, x-ray photoemission spectroscopy, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Two types of APDBs form on each reconstruction; they consist of Ti$_x$O$_y$ vacancy clusters with a specific stoichiometry. The presence of these clusters is controlled by the oxygen pressure during annealing. The structural models of the vacancy clusters are resolved with DFT, which also shows that their relative stability depends on the chemical pote…
The electronic structure of surfaces plays a key role in the properties of quantum devices. However, surfaces are also the most challenging to simulate and engineer. Here, we study the electronic structure of InAs(001), InAs(111), and InSb(110) surfaces using a combination of density functional theory (DFT) and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). We were able to perform large-scale first principles simulations and capture effects of different surface reconstructions by using DFT calculations with a machine-learned Hubbard U correction [npj Comput. Mater. 6, 180 (2020)]. To facil…
The effects of Co addition on the chemical and electronic structure of PbTiO$_3$ were explored both by theory and through experiment. Cobalt was incorporated to PbTiO$_3$ during sol gel process. The XRD data of the compounds confirmed the perovskite structure for the pure samples. The XRD lines broadened and showed emerging cubic-like features as the Co incorporation increased. The changes in the XRD pattern were interpreted as double perovskite structure formation. $^{207}$Pb NMR measurements revealed a growing isotropic component in the presence of Co. In line with the experiments, DFT calcu…

We develop a first-principles theory for Schottky barrier physics. The Poisson equation is solved completely self-consistently with the electrostatic charge density and outside the normal density functional theory (DFT) electronic structure iteration loop, allowing computation of a Schottky barrier entirely from DFT involving thousands of atomic layers in the semiconductor. The induced charge in the bulk consists of conduction and valence band charges from doping and band bending, as well as charge from the evanescent states in the gap of the semiconductor. The Schottky barrier height is deter…
Recently, an experimental study developed an efficient way to obtain sulfur-doped gamma-graphdiyne. This study has shown that this new material could have promising applications in lithium-ion batteries, but the complete understanding of how the sulfur atoms are incorporated into the graphdiyne network is still missing. In this work, we have investigated the sulfur doping process through molecular dynamics and density functional theory simulations. Our results suggest that the doped induced distortions of the gamma-graphdiyne pores prevent the incorporation of more than two sulfur atoms. The m…
The measurement of hydrogen induced changes on the electronic structure of transition metal oxides by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy is a challenging endeavor, since the origin of the photoelectron cannot be unambiguously assigned to hydrogen. The H-induced electronic structure changes in tungsten trioxide have been known for more than 100 years, but are still being controversially debated. The controversy stems from the difficulty in disentangling effects due to hydrogenation from the effects of oxygen deficiencies. Using a membrane approach to X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, in combinati…
We introduce an interatomic potential for hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) based on the Gaussian approximation potential (GAP) machine learning methodology. The potential is based on a training set of configurations collected from density functional theory (DFT) simulations and is capable of treating bulk and multilayer hBN as well as nanotubes of arbitrary chirality. The developed force field faithfully reproduces the potential energy surface predicted by DFT while improving the efficiency by several orders of magnitude. We test our potential by comparing formation energies, geometrical properti…
The electronic and structural properties of Janus MoSSe/MoX$_2$ (X=S,Se) in-plane heterojunctions, endowed with single-atom vacancies, were studied using density functional theory calculations. The stability of these structures was verified from cohesion energy calculations. Results showed that single-atom vacancies induce the appearance of flat midgap states, and a substantial amount of charge is localized in the vicinity of these defects. As a consequence, these heterojunctions presented an intrinsic dipole moment. No bond reconstructions were noted by removing an atom from the lattice, rega…
Prediction of induced magnetism in 2D Ti$_2$C based MXene by manipulating the mixed surface functionalization and metal substitution computed by xTB model Hamiltonian of the DFTB method
Using angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations we studied the low-energy electronic structure of bulk ZrTe$_2$. ARPES studies on ZrTe$_2$ demonstrate free charge carriers at the Fermi level, which is further confirmed by the DFT calculations. An equal number of hole and electron carrier density estimated from the ARPES data, points ZrTe$_2$ to a semimetal. The DFT calculations further suggest a band inversion between Te $p$ and Zr $d$ states at the $Γ$ point, hinting at the non-trivial band topology in ZrTe$_2$. Thus, our studies for th…
First-principles calculations of work function tuning induced by different chemical terminations on Si(100) surface are presented and discussed. We find that the presence of halogen atoms (I, Br, Cl, and F) leads to an increase of the work function if compared to the fully hydrogenated surface. This is a quite general effect and is directly linked to the chemisorbed atoms electronegativity as well as to the charge redistribution at the interface. All these results are examined with respect to previous theoretical works and experimental data obtained for the (100) as well as other Si surface or…

The recently proposed Atomistic Structure Learning Algorithm (ASLA) builds on neural network enabled image recognition and reinforcement learning. It enables fully autonomous structure determination when used in combination with a first-principles total energy calculator, e.g. a density functional theory (DFT) program. To save on the computational requirements, ASLA utilizes the DFT program in a single-point mode, i.e. without allowing for relaxation of the structural candidates according to the force information at the DFT level. In this work, we augment ASLA to establish a surrogate energy m…
Intralayer deformation in van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures is generally assumed to be negligible due to the weak nature of the interactions between the layers, especially when the interfaces are found incoherent. In the present work, graphene-phosphorene vdW-heterostructures are investigated with the Density Functional Theory (DFT). The challenge of treating nearly incommensurate (very large) supercell in DFT is bypassed by considering different energetic quantities in the grand canonical ensemble, alternative to the formation energy, in order to take into account the mismatch elastic cont…
We report the experimental realization of Dirac semimetal state in NdSb, a material with antiferromagnetic ground state. The occurrence of topological semimetal state has been well supported by our band structure calculations and the experimental observation of chiral anomaly induced negative magnetoresistance. A field-induced Fermi surface reconstruction is observed, in response to the change of spin polarization. The observation of topological semimetal state in a magnetic material provides an opportunity to investigate the magneto-topological phenomena.
Incorporation of surface correction and anharmonic correction to vacancy formation energy for nickel and copper: bridging the gap between Density Functional Theory and experiment
We study pressure-induced structural evolution of vanadium diselenide (VSe2), a 1T polymorphic member of the transition metal di-chalcogenide (TMD) family using synchrotron-based powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and first-principles density functional theory (DFT). Our XRD results reveal anomalies at P ~4 GPa in c/a ratio, V-Se bond length and Se-V-Se bond angle signalling an isostructural transition. This is followed by a first order structural transition from 1T (space group P-3m1) phase to a 3R (space group R-3m) phase at P ~11 GPa due to sliding of adjacent Se-V-Se layers. We present variou…
