This paper investigates polar codes for the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. The scaling exponent $μ$ of polar codes for a memoryless channel $q_{Y|X}$ with capacity $I(q_{Y|X})$ characterizes the closest gap between the capacity and non-asymptotic achievable rates in the following way: For a fixed $\varepsilon \in (0, 1)$, the gap between the capacity $I(q_{Y|X})$ and the maximum non-asymptotic rate $R_n^*$ achieved by a length-$n$ polar code with average error probability $\varepsilon$ scales as $n^{-1/μ}$, i.e., $I(q_{Y|X})-R_n^* = Θ(n^{-1/μ})$.
It is well known that the scaling exponent $μ$ for any binary-input memoryless channel (BMC) with $I(q_{Y|X})\in(0,1)$ is bounded above by $4.714$, which was shown by an explicit construction of polar codes. Our main result shows that $4.714$ remains to be a valid upper bound on the scaling exponent for the AWGN channel. Our proof technique involves the following two ideas: (i) The capacity of the AWGN channel can be achieved within a gap of $O(n^{-1/μ}\sqrt{\log n})$ by using an input alphabet consisting of $n$ constellations and restricting the input distribution to be uniform; (ii) The capacity of a multiple access channel (MAC) with an input alphabet consisting of $n$ constellations can be achieved within a gap of $O(n^{-1/μ}\log n)$ by using a superposition of $\log n$ binary-input polar codes. In addition, we investigate the performance of polar codes in the moderate deviations regime where both the gap to capacity and the error probability vanish as $n$ grows. An explicit construction of polar codes is proposed to obey a certain tradeoff between the gap to capacity and the decay rate of the error probability for the AWGN channel.
Finding fast polarizing transforms is an important problem as polar codes suffer from slow finitelength performance. This paper considers non binary polar codes for transmission over the AWGN channel and designs polarizing transforms with better distance characteristics using a simple procedure for signal sets. The main idea of the paper is to define Equidistant Polarizing Transforms and show that they achieve the best distance spectrum bound. We provides an example of such transform for q = 5. In this case PSK-type signal set is used. Finally, we show performance gains and some comparison wit…
We present a comparative study of the performance of various polar code constructions in an additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. A polar code construction is any algorithm that selects $K$ best among $N$ possible polar bit-channels at the design signal-to-noise-ratio (design-SNR) in terms of bit error rate (BER). Optimal polar code construction is hard and therefore many suboptimal polar code constructions have been proposed at different computational complexities. Polar codes are also non-universal meaning the code changes significantly with the design-SNR. However, it is not known w…
Capacity of M-ary Amplitude and Phase-Shift Keying(M-APSK) over an Additive White Gaussian Noise(AWGN) channel that also introduces an unknown carrier phase rotation is considered. The phase remains constant over a block of L symbols and it is independent from block to block. Aiming to design codes with equally probable symbols, uniformly distributed channel inputs are assumed. Based on results of Peleg and Shamai for M-ary Phase Shift Keying(M-PSK) modulation, easily computable upper and lower bounds on the effective M-APSK capacity are derived. For moderate M and L and a broad range of Signa…
We propose a new polar code construction framework (i.e., selecting the frozen bit positions) for the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel, tailored to a given decoding algorithm, rather than based on the (not necessarily optimal) assumption of successive cancellation (SC) decoding. The proposed framework is based on the Genetic Algorithm (GenAlg), where populations (i.e., collections) of information sets evolve successively via evolutionary transformations based on their individual error-rate performance. These populations converge towards an information set that fits the decoding beh…
Polar lattices, which are constructed from polar codes, are provably good for the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. In this work, we propose a new polar lattice construction that achieves the secrecy capacity under the strong secrecy criterion over the mod-$Λ$ Gaussian wiretap channel. This construction leads to an AWGN-good lattice and a secrecy-good lattice simultaneously. The design methodology is mainly based on the equivalence in terms of polarization between the $Λ/Λ'$ channel in lattice coding and the equivalent channel derived from the chain rule of mutual information in mu…
In this paper, we propose a new class of lattices constructed from polar codes, namely polar lattices, to achieve the capacity $\frac{1}{2}\log(1+\SNR)$ of the additive white Gaussian-noise (AWGN) channel. Our construction follows the multilevel approach of Forney \textit{et al.}, where we construct a capacity-achieving polar code on each level. The component polar codes are shown to be naturally nested, thereby fulfilling the requirement of the multilevel lattice construction. We prove that polar lattices are \emph{AWGN-good}. Furthermore, using the technique of source polarization, we propos…
We investigate the limits of communication over the discrete-time Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) channel, when the channel output is quantized using a small number of bits. We first provide a proof of our recent conjecture on the optimality of a discrete input distribution in this scenario. Specifically, we show that for any given output quantizer choice with K quantization bins (i.e., a precision of log2 K bits), the input distribution, under an average power constraint, need not have any more than K + 1 mass points to achieve the channel capacity. The cutting-plane algorithm is employe…
Besides the determined construction of polar codes in BEC channels, different construction techniques have been proposed for AWGN channels. The current state-of-the-art algorithm starts with a design-SNR (or an operating SNR) and then processing is carried out to approximate each individual bit channel. However, as found in this paper, for fading channels, an operating SNR can not be directly used in approximating the bit channels. To achieve a better BER performance, the input SNR for the polar code construction in fadding channels is derived. A selection of the design-SNR for both the AWGN a…
In this work, an explicit wiretap coding scheme based on polar lattices is proposed to achieve the secrecy capacity of the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) wiretap channel. Firstly, polar lattices are used to construct secrecy-good lattices for the mod-$Λ_s$ Gaussian wiretap channel. Then we propose an explicit shaping scheme to remove this mod-$Λ_s$ front end and extend polar lattices to the genuine Gaussian wiretap channel. The shaping technique is based on the lattice Gaussian distribution, which leads to a binary asymmetric channel at each level for the multilevel lattice codes. By emp…
We consider the problem of using polar codes with higher order modulation over AWGN channels. Unlike prior work, we focus on using modulation independent polar codes. That is, the polar codes are not re-designed based on the modulation used. Instead, we propose bit-permuted coded modulation (BPCM): a technique for using the multilevel coding (MLC) approach for an arbitrary polar code. The BPCM technique exploits a natural connection between MLC and polar codes. It involves applying bit permutations prior to mapping the polar code to a higher order modulation. The bit permutations are designed,…
This paper revisits polar code design for a binary-input additive white Gaussian noise (BI-AWGN) channel when successive cancellation (SC) decoding is applied at the receiver. We focus on the reciprocal channel approximation (RCA), which is often adopted in the design of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. In order to apply RCA to polar code design for various codeword lengths, we derive rigorous closed-form approximations that are valid over a wide range of SNR over an AWGN channel, for both the mutual information of BPSK signaling and the corresponding reciprocal channel mapping. As a res…
The polar receiver architecture is a receiver design that captures the envelope and phase information of the signal rather than its in-phase and quadrature components. Several studies have demonstrated the robustness of polar receivers to phase noise and other nonlinearities. Yet, the information-theoretic limits of polar receivers with finite-precision quantizers have not been investigated in the literature. The main contribution of this work is to identify the optimal signaling strategy for the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel with polar quantization at the output. More precisely…
The polar codes are proven to be capacity-achieving and are shown to have equivalent or even better finite-length performance than the turbo/LDPC codes under some improved decoding algorithms over the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels. Polar coding is based on the so-called channel polarization phenomenon induced by a transform over the underlying binary-input channel. The channel polarization is found to be universal in many signal processing problems and has been applied to the coded modulation schemes. In this paper, the channel polarization is further extended to the multiple a…
A new method for low-complexity near-maximum-likelihood (ML) decoding of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes over the additive white Gaussian noise channel is presented. The proposed method termed belief-propagation--list erasure decoding (BP-LED) is based on erasing carefully chosen unreliable bits performed in case of BP decoding failure. A strategy of introducing erasures into the received vector and a new erasure decoding algorithm are proposed. The new erasure decoding algorithm, called list erasure decoding, combines ML decoding over the BEC with list decoding applied if the ML decoder…
New algorithms for efficient decoding of polar codes (which may be CRC-augmented), transmitted over either a binary erasure channel (BEC) or an additive white Gaussian noise channel (AWGNC), are presented. We start by presenting a new efficient exact maximum likelihood decoding algorithm for the BEC based on inactivation decoding and analyze its computational complexity. This algorithm applies a matrix triangulation process on a sparse polar code parity check matrix, followed by solving a small size linear system over GF(2). We then consider efficient decoding of polar codes, transmitted over …
This paper focuses on an improved Gaussian approximation (GA) based construction of polar codes with successive cancellation (SC) decoding over an additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. Arikan has proven that polar codes with low-complexity SC decoder can approach the channel capacity of an arbitrary symmetric binary-input discrete memoryless channel, provided that the code length is chosen large enough. Nevertheless, how to construct such codes over an AWGN channel with low computational effort has been an open problem. Compared to density evolution, the GA is known as a low complexity…
A framework is proposed that allows for a joint description and optimization of both binary polar coding and the multilevel coding (MLC) approach for $2^m$-ary digital pulse-amplitude modulation (PAM). The conceptual equivalence of polar coding and multilevel coding is pointed out in detail. Based on a novel characterization of the channel polarization phenomenon, rules for the optimal choice of the bit labeling in this coded modulation scheme employing polar codes are developed. Simulation results for the AWGN channel are included.
We consider the problem of recovering channel code parameters over a candidate set by merely analyzing the received encoded signals. We propose a deep learning-based solution that I) is capable of identifying the channel code parameters for any coding scheme (such as LDPC, Convolutional, Turbo, and Polar codes), II) is robust against channel impairments like multi-path fading, III) does not require any previous knowledge or estimation of channel state or signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and IV) outperforms related works in terms of probability of detecting the correct code parameters.
A modification to 5G New Radio (NR) polar code is proposed, which improves the error correction performance with higher order modulation through probabilistic shaping. The presented scheme mainly re-uses existing hardware at the transmitter, and modifications at the receiver are small. Simulation results show that the presented approach can improve the performance by up to 1dB for 256-QAM on AWGN channels
A framework is proposed that allows for a joint description and optimization of both binary polar coding and $2^m$-ary digital pulse-amplitude modulation (PAM) schemes such as multilevel coding (MLC) and bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM). The conceptual equivalence of polar coding and multilevel coding is pointed out in detail. Based on a novel characterization of the channel polarization phenomenon, rules for the optimal choice of the labeling in coded modulation schemes employing polar codes are developed. In this paper, we present the concept of non-uniform channel polarization and a scheme for rate-compatible polar code construction for any codeword length using additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels and the successive cancellation (SC) decoder. A Non-Uniform Polarization technique based on the Gaussian Approximation (NUPGA) is developed and an efficient rate-compatible design technique is devised to choose the best channels for transmission by a process of re-polarization of the codeword with the desired length. Simulations illustrate the proposed NUPGA design against existing rate-com…
Polar codes, introduced by Arikan, achieve symmetric capacity of any discrete memoryless channels under low encoding and decoding complexity. Recently, non-binary polar codes have been investigated. In this paper, we calculate error probability of non-binary polar codes constructed on the basis of Reed-Solomon matrices by numerical simulations. It is confirmed that 4-ary polar codes have significantly better performance than binary polar codes on binary-input AWGN channel. We also discuss an interpretation of polar codes in terms of algebraic geometry codes, and further show that polar codes u…
In this paper, we propose the explicit construction of a new class of lattices based on polar codes, which are provably good for the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. We follow the multilevel construction of Forney \textit{et al.} (i.e., Construction D), where the code on each level is a capacity-achieving polar code for that level. The proposed polar lattices are efficiently decodable by using multistage decoding. Computable performance bounds are derived to measure the gap to the generalized capacity at given error probability. A design example is presented to demonstrate the per…
This paper presents a puncturing technique to design length-compatible polar codes. The punctured bits are identified with the help of differential evolution (DE). A DE-based optimization framework is developed where the sum of the bit-error-rate (BER) values of the information bits is minimized. We identify a set of bits which can be avoided for puncturing in the case of additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels. This reduces the size of the candidate puncturing patterns. Simulation results confirm the superiority of the proposed technique over other state-of-the-art puncturing methods.
We consider the problem of supporting H-ARQ with polar codes. For supporting H-ARQ, we propose to create redundancy versions based on different, but equivalent, subsets of a polar code. The equivalent subsets are created from an initial subset of a polar code using an inherent symmetry in polar code construction. A greedy construction is used to create the initial subset of a polar code. We demonstrate performance of proposed constructions via simulations for binary input AWGN channel. We demonstrate that a (4096, 1024) polar code can be divided into two disjoint (2048, 1024) subset polar code…
BMERA or convolutional polar codes are an extension of polar codes with a provably better error exponent than polar codes. A successive cancellation (SC) decoding algorithm for BMERA codes similar to SC polar decoders is introduced. A pseudocode description of the SC decoder that can be extended to SC list (SCL) decoding is provided. Simulation results with and without outer CRC codes under SC and SCL decoding are presented for QAM modulation over the AWGN channel to compare the performance of polar and BMERA codes. BMERA codes outperform polar codes by more than 0.5 dB under SCL decoding with…
We consider the problem of using polar codes over slow fading wireless channels. For design, we focus on a parallel slow fading channel with 2 blocks, and polar codes with rate <= 1/2. Motivated by Arikan's systematic polar code construction, we propose an interleaver design for a general polar code. The interleaver comprises of using the bit reversal of the order of polarized bit channels. This interleaver is called a diversity interleaver. In addition to the diversity interleaver, a diversity polar code is proposed to further increase the diversity gain. The proposed designs are evaluated vi…
A rateless coding scheme transmits incrementally more and more coded bits over an unknown channel until all the information bits are decoded reliably by the receiver. We propose a new rateless coding scheme based on polar codes, and we show that this scheme is capacity-achieving, i.e. its information rate is as good as the best code specifically designed for the unknown channel. Previous rateless coding schemes are designed for specific classes of channels such as AWGN channels, binary erasure channels, etc. but the proposed rateless coding scheme is capacity-achieving for broad classes of cha…
Current deterministic algorithms for the construction of polar codes can only be argued to be practical for channels with small input alphabet sizes. In this paper, we show that any construction algorithm for channels with moderate input alphabet size which follows the paradigm of "degrading after each polarization step" will inherently be impractical with respect to a certain "hard" underlying channel. This result also sheds light on why the construction of LDPC codes using density evolution is impractical for channels with moderate sized input alphabets.
We construct a channel coding scheme to achieve the capacity of any discrete memoryless channel based solely on the techniques of polar coding. In particular, we show how source polarization and randomness extraction via polarization can be employed to "shape" uniformly-distributed i.i.d. random variables into approximate i.i.d. random variables distributed ac- cording to the capacity-achieving distribution. We then combine this shaper with a variant of polar channel coding, constructed by the duality with source coding, to achieve the channel capacity. Our scheme inherits the low complexity e…
We consider a block fading additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel with perfect channel state information (CSI) at the transmitter and the receiver. First, for a given codeword length and non-vanishing average probability of error, we obtain lower and upper bounds on the maximum transmission rate. We derive bounds for three kinds of power constraints inherent to a wireless transmitter. These include the canonical peak power constraint and average power constraint. In addition, we consider a time varying peak power constraint imposed by an \emph{energy harvesting device}-a mechanism that p…
A hybrid automatic repeat request scheme with Chase combing (HARQ-CC) of polar codes is proposed. The existing analysis tools of the underlying rate-compatible punctured polar (RCPP) codes for additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels are extended to Rayleigh fading channels. Then, an approximation bound of the throughput efficiency for the polar coded HARQ-CC scheme is derived. Utilizing this bound, the parameter configurations of the proposed scheme can be optimized. Simulation results show that, the proposed HARQ-CC scheme under a low-complexity SC decoding is only about $1.0$dB away fr…
A polar coding scheme for fading channels is proposed in this paper. More specifically, the focus is Gaussian fading channel with a BPSK modulation technique, where the equivalent channel could be modeled as a binary symmetric channel with varying cross-over probabilities. To deal with variable channel states, a coding scheme of hierarchically utilizing polar codes is proposed. In particular, by observing the polarization of different binary symmetric channels over different fading blocks, each channel use corresponding to a different polarization is modeled as a binary erasure channel such th…

Landmark codes underpin reliable physical layer communication, e.g., Reed-Muller, BCH, Convolution, Turbo, LDPC and Polar codes: each is a linear code and represents a mathematical breakthrough. The impact on humanity is huge: each of these codes has been used in global wireless communication standards (satellite, WiFi, cellular). Reliability of communication over the classical additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel enables benchmarking and ranking of the different codes. In this paper, we construct KO codes, a computationaly efficient family of deep-learning driven (encoder, decoder) pa…
A design of rate-compatible polar codes suitable for HARQ communications is proposed in this paper. An important feature of the proposed design is that the puncturing order is chosen with low complexity on a base code of short length, which is then further polarized to the desired length. A practical rate-matching system that has the flexibility to choose any desired rate through puncturing or repetition while preserving the polarization is suggested. The proposed rate-matching system is combined with channel interleaving and a bit-mapping procedure that preserves the polarization of the rate-…
The inherent nature of polar codes being channel specific makes it difficult to use them in a setting where the communication channel changes with time. In particular, to be able to use polar codes in a wireless scenario, varying attenuation due to fading needs to be mitigated. To the best of our knowledge, there has been no comprehensive work in this direction thus far. In this work, a practical scheme involving channel inversion with the knowledge of the channel state at the transmitter, is proposed. An additional practical constraint on the permissible average and peak power is imposed, whi…
In 2008 Arikan proposed polar coding [arXiv:0807.3917] which we summarize as follows: (a) From the root channel $W$ synthesize recursively a series of channels $W_N^{(1)},\dotsc,W_N^{(N)}$. (b) Select sophisticatedly a subset $A$ of synthetic channels. (c) Transmit information using synthetic channels indexed by $A$ and freeze the remaining synthetic channels. Arikan gives each synthetic channel a score (called the Bhattacharyya parameter) that determines whether it should be selected or frozen. As $N$ grows, a majority of the scores are either very high or very low, i.e., they polarize. By ch…
The mutual information between a complex-valued channel input and its complex-valued output is decomposed into four parts based on polar coordinates: an amplitude term, a phase term, and two mixed terms. Numerical results for the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel with various inputs show that, at high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), the amplitude and phase terms dominate the mixed terms. For the AWGN channel with a Gaussian input, analytical expressions are derived for high SNR. The decomposition method is applied to partially coherent channels and a property of such channels called "s…
In this work, we introduce $β$-expansion, a notion borrowed from number theory, as a theoretical framework to study fast construction of polar codes based on a recursive structure of universal partial order (UPO) and polarization weight (PW) algorithm. We show that polar codes can be recursively constructed from UPO by continuously solving several polynomial equations at each recursive step. From these polynomial equations, we can extract an interval for $β$, such that ranking the synthetic channels through a closed-form $β$-expansion preserves the property of nested frozen sets, which is a de…
Concatenating the state-of-the-art codes at moderate rates with repetition codes has emerged as a practical solution deployed in various standards for ultra-low-power devices such as in Internet-of-Things (IoT) networks. In this paper, we propose a novel concatenation mechanism for such applications which need to operate at very low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime. In the proposed scheme, the outer code is a hybrid polar code constructed in two stages, one with a binary kernel and another also with a binary kernel but applied over a binary extension field. The inner code is a non-binary mul…
The long-haul communication systems can offer ultra high-speed data transfer rates but suffer from burst errors. The high-rate and high-performance staircase codes provide an efficient way for long-haul transmission. The staircase coding scheme is a concatenation structure, which provides the opportunity to improve the performance of high-rate polar codes. At the same time, the polar codes make the staircase structure more reliable. Thus, a high-rate polar-staircase coding scheme is proposed, where the systematic polar codes are applied as the component codes. The soft cancellation decoding of…
In this article, we propose the construction of polar codes based on piecewise Gaussian approximation (PGA) techniques. The PGA is first optimized and then compared to the Gaussian approximation (GA) construction method, showing performance gains for medium blocks and high precision for long blocks, in scenarios with successive cancellation (SC) decoding and additive white gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. Based on the PGA, we develop two approximations based on multi-segmented polynomials that are easy to implement. We present the Approximate PGA (APGA) that is optimized for medium blocks and pr…
We study communication systems over band-limited Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) channels in which the transmitter output is constrained to be symmetric binary (bi-polar). In this work we improve the original Ozarov-Wyner-Ziv (OWZ) lower bound on capacity by introducing new achievability schemes with two advantages over the studied OWZ scheme which is based on peak-power constrained pulse-amplitude modulation. Our schemes achieve a moderately improved information rate and do so with much less sign transitions of the binary signal. The gap between the known upper-bound based on spectral co…
Lattice codes are elegant and powerful structures that not only can achieve the capacity of the AWGN channel but are also a key ingredient to many multiterminal schemes that exploit linearity properties. However, constructing lattice codes that can realize these benefits with low complexity is still a challenging problem. In this paper, efficient encoding and decoding algorithms are proposed for multilevel binary LDPC lattices constructed via Construction D' whose complexity is linear in the total number of coded bits. Moreover, a generalization of Construction D' is proposed that relaxes some…
A practical rate-matching system for constructing rate-compatible polar codes is proposed. The proposed polar code circular buffer rate-matching is suitable for transmissions on communication channels that support hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) communications, as well as for flexible resource-element rate-matching on single transmission channels. Our proposed circular buffer rate matching scheme also incorporates a bit-mapping scheme for transmission on bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM) channels using higher order modulations. An interleaver is derived from a puncturing order obt…
We propose a novel scheme for rate-compatible arbitrary-length polar code construction for the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. The proposed scheme is based on the concept of non-uniform channel polarization. The original polar codes can only be designed with code lengths that are powers of two. Puncturing, shortening and extension are three strategies to obtain arbitrary code lengths and code rates for polar codes. There are other ways to design codes with arbitrary length but which have encoding and decoding with higher complexity such as multi-kernel, concatenated codes and spe…
This work presents a polar coding scheme for fading channels, focusing primarily on fading binary symmetric and additive exponential noise channels. For fading binary symmetric channels, a hierarchical coding scheme is presented, utilizing polar coding both over channel uses and over fading blocks. The receiver uses its channel state information (CSI) to distinguish states, thus constructing an overlay erasure channel over the underlying fading channels. By using this scheme, the capacity of a fading binary symmetric channel is achieved without CSI at the transmitter. Noting that a fading AWGN…
Polar codes are the latest breakthrough in coding theory, as they are the first family of codes with explicit construction that provably achieve the symmetric capacity of discrete memoryless channels. Arıkan's polar encoder and successive cancellation decoder have complexities of $N \log N$, for code length $N$. Although, the complexity bound of $N \log N$ is asymptotically favorable, we report in this work methods to further reduce the encoding and decoding complexities of polar coding. The crux is to relax the polarization of certain bit-channels without performance degradation. We consider …
In this paper, polar codes for the $m$-user multiple access channel (MAC) with binary inputs are constructed. It is shown that Arıkan's polarization technique applied individually to each user transforms independent uses of a $m$-user binary input MAC into successive uses of extremal MACs. This transformation has a number of desirable properties: (i) the `uniform sum rate' of the original MAC is preserved, (ii) the extremal MACs have uniform rate regions that are not only polymatroids but matroids and thus (iii) their uniform sum rate can be reached by each user transmitting either uncoded or …
Consider the transmission of a polar code of block length $N$ and rate $R$ over a binary memoryless symmetric channel $W$ and let $P_e$ be the block error probability under successive cancellation decoding. In this paper, we develop new bounds that characterize the relationship of the parameters $R$, $N$, $P_e$, and the quality of the channel $W$ quantified by its capacity $I(W)$ and its Bhattacharyya parameter $Z(W)$. In previous work, two main regimes were studied. In the error exponent regime, the channel $W$ and the rate $R<I(W)$ are fixed, and it was proved that the error probability $P_e…
