We investigate the limits of communication over the discrete-time Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) channel, when the channel output is quantized using a small number of bits. We first provide a proof of our recent conjecture on the optimality of a discrete input distribution in this scenario. Specifically, we show that for any given output quantizer choice with K quantization bins (i.e., a precision of log2 K bits), the input distribution, under an average power constraint, need not have any more than K + 1 mass points to achieve the channel capacity. The cutting-plane algorithm is employed to compute this capacity and to generate optimum input distributions. Numerical optimization over the choice of the quantizer is then performed (for 2-bit and 3-bit symmetric quantization), and the results we obtain show that the loss due to low-precision output quantization, which is small at low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) as expected, can be quite acceptable even for moderate to high SNR values. For example, at SNRs up to 20 dB, 2-3 bit quantization achieves 80-90% of the capacity achievable using infinite-precision quantization.
The channel capacity theorem for additive white Gaussian noise channel (AWGN), widely known as the Shannon-Hartley Law, expresses the information capacity of a channel bandlimited in the conventional Fourier domain in terms of the signal-to-noise ratio in it. In this letter generalized versions of the Shannon-Hartley Law using the linear canonical transform (LCT) are presented. The channel capacity for AWGN channels is found to be a function of the LCT parameters.
This paper slightly improves the upper bound in Thangaraj et al. for the capacity of the amplitude-constrained scalar AWGN channel. This improvement makes the upper bound within 0.002 bits of the capacity for $\frac{E_b}{N_0}\leq 2.5$ dB.
In this paper, the Dynamic-Assignment Blahut-Arimoto (DAB) algorithm identifies finite-support probability mass functions (PMFs) with small cardinality that achieve capacity for amplitude-constrained (AC) Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) Channels, or approach capacity to within less than 1% for power-constrained (PC) AWGN Channels. While a continuous Gaussian PDF is well-known to be a theoretical capacity-achieving distribution for the PC-AWGN channel, DAB identifies PMFs with small-cardinality that are, for practical purposes, indistinguishable in performance. We extend the results of Oza…
Communication over a multiple access channel is considered. Each user modulates his signal as a superposition of redundant data streams where interconnection of data bits can be represented by means of a sparse graph. The receiver observes a signal resulting from the coupling of the sparse modulation graphs. Iterative interference cancellation decoding is analyzed. It is proved that spatial graph coupling allows to achieve the AWGN channel capacity with equal power transmissions.
We consider an AWGN channel with a transmitter powered by an energy harvesting source. The node is equipped with a finite energy buffer. Such a system can be modelled as a channel with side information (about energy in the energy buffer) causally known at the transmitter. The receiver may or may not have the side information. We prove that Markov energy management policies are sufficient to achieve the capacity of the system and provide a single letter characterization for the capacity. The computation of the capacity is expensive. Therefore, we discuss an achievable scheme that is easy to com…
We consider communication over the AWGN channel with a transmitter whose battery is recharged with RF energy transfer at random times known to the receiver. We assume that the recharging process is i.i.d. Bernoulli. We characterize the capacity of this channel as the limit of an $n$-letter maximum mutual information rate under both causal and noncausal transmitter knowledge of the battery recharges. With noncausal knowledge, it is possible to explicitly identify the maximizing input distribution, which we use to demonstrate that the capacity with noncausal knowledge of the battery recharges is…
We propose a new coding scheme using only one lattice that achieves the $\frac{1}{2}\log(1+\SNR)$ capacity of the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel with lattice decoding, when the signal-to-noise ratio $\SNR>e-1$. The scheme applies a discrete Gaussian distribution over an AWGN-good lattice, but otherwise does not require a shaping lattice or dither. Thus, it significantly simplifies the default lattice coding scheme of Erez and Zamir which involves a quantization-good lattice as well as an AWGN-good lattice. Using the flatness factor, we show that the error probability of the propo…
Capacity of M-ary Amplitude and Phase-Shift Keying(M-APSK) over an Additive White Gaussian Noise(AWGN) channel that also introduces an unknown carrier phase rotation is considered. The phase remains constant over a block of L symbols and it is independent from block to block. Aiming to design codes with equally probable symbols, uniformly distributed channel inputs are assumed. Based on results of Peleg and Shamai for M-ary Phase Shift Keying(M-PSK) modulation, easily computable upper and lower bounds on the effective M-APSK capacity are derived. For moderate M and L and a broad range of Signa…
This paper investigates the capacity region of three-receiver AWGN broadcast channels where the receivers (i) have private-message requests and (ii) know the messages requested by some other receivers as side information. We classify these channels based on their side information into eight groups, and construct different transmission schemes for the groups. For six groups, we characterize the capacity region, and show that it improves both the best known inner and outer bounds. For the remaining two groups, we improve the best known inner bound by using side information during channel decodin…
The capacity of a complex and discrete-time memoryless additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel under three constraints, namely, input average power, input amplitude and output delivered power is studied. The output delivered power constraint is modelled as the average of linear combination of even moments of the channel input being larger than a threshold. It is shown that the capacity of an AWGN channel under transmit average power and receiver delivered power constraints is the same as the capacity of an AWGN channel under an average power constraint. However, depending on the two const…
We consider covert communication, i.e., hiding the presence of communication from an adversary for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels. We characterize the maximum covert coding rate under a variety of settings, including different regimes where either the number of transmit antennas or the blocklength is scaled up. We show that a non-zero covert capacity can be achieved in the massive MIMO regime in which the number of transmit antennas scales up but under specific conditions. Under such conditions, we show that the covert capacity of MIMO AWGN …
In this paper we show that any sequence of infinite lattice constellations which is good for the unconstrained Gaussian channel can be shaped into a capacity-achieving sequence of codes for the power-constrained Gaussian channel under lattice decoding and non-uniform signalling. Unlike previous results in the literature, our scheme holds with no extra condition on the lattices (e.g. quantization-goodness or vanishing flatness factor), thus establishing a direct implication between AWGN-goodness, in the sense of Poltyrev, and capacity-achieving codes. Our analysis uses properties of the discret…
This paper investigates the capacity of a communications channel that, in addition to additive white Gaussian noise, also suffers from interference caused by a co-existing radar transmission. The radar interference (of short duty-cycle and of much wider bandwidth than the intended communication signal) is modeled as an additive term whose amplitude is known and constant, but whose phase is independent and identically uniformly distributed at each channel use. The capacity achieving input distribution, under the standard average power constraint, is shown to have independent modulo and phase. T…
The L-user additive white Gaussian noise multiway relay channel is investigated, where L users exchange information at the same rate through a single relay. A new achievable rate region, based on the functional-decode-forward coding strategy, is derived. For the case where there are three or more users, and all nodes transmit at the same power, the capacity is obtained. For the case where the relay power scales with the number of users, it is shown that both compress-forward and functional-decode-forward achieve rates within a constant number of bits of the capacity at all SNR levels; in addit…
This paper investigates polar codes for the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. The scaling exponent $μ$ of polar codes for a memoryless channel $q_{Y|X}$ with capacity $I(q_{Y|X})$ characterizes the closest gap between the capacity and non-asymptotic achievable rates in the following way: For a fixed $\varepsilon \in (0, 1)$, the gap between the capacity $I(q_{Y|X})$ and the maximum non-asymptotic rate $R_n^*$ achieved by a length-$n$ polar code with average error probability $\varepsilon$ scales as $n^{-1/μ}$, i.e., $I(q_{Y|X})-R_n^* = Θ(n^{-1/μ})$. It is well known that the scalin…
In this work, targeting, e.g., future generation cellular, microwave-links, or optical fiber systems, we propose a new geometric shaping design for golden angle modulation (GAM) based on a (double) truncated Gaussian input distribution. The design improves the mutual information (MI), and the peak-to-average power ratio, over the full signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) range relative to two key GAM schemes introduced in [1],[2]. Inspired by the proposed geometric shaping, a simpler, SNR-dependent, design is also suggested. The performance is numerically evaluated with respect to MI and compared with …
The L-user additive white Gaussian noise multi-way relay channel is considered, where multiple users exchange information through a single relay at a common rate. Existing coding strategies, i.e., complete-decode-forward and compress-forward are shown to be bounded away from the cut-set upper bound at high signal-to-noise ratios (SNR). It is known that the gap between the compress-forward rate and the capacity upper bound is a constant at high SNR, and that between the complete-decode-forward rate and the upper bound increases with SNR at high SNR. In this paper, a functional-decode-forward co…
Simultaneous Wireless Information and Power Transfer (SWIPT) is subject to nonlinearity at the energy harvester that leads to significant changes to transmit signal designs compared to conventional wireless communications. In this paper, the capacity of a discrete time, memoryless and complex Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) channel in the presence of a nonlinear energy harvester at the receiver is studied. Considering the two common nonlinear energy harvester models introduced in the literature, two sets of constraints are considered. First the capacity is studied under average power (AP)…
We consider a continuous-time bandlimited additive white Gaussian noise channel with 1-bit output quantization. On such a channel the information is carried by the temporal distances of the zero-crossings of the transmit signal. The set of input signals is constrained by the bandwidth of the channel and an average power constraint. We derive a lower bound on the capacity by lower-bounding the mutual information rate for a given set of waveforms with exponentially distributed zero-crossing distances, where we focus on the behavior in the mid to high signal-to-noise ratio regime. We find that in…
Lattice coding and decoding have been shown to achieve the capacity of the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. This was accomplished using a minimum mean-square error scaling and randomization to transform the AWGN channel into a modulo-lattice additive noise channel of the same capacity. It has been further shown that when operating at rates below capacity but above the critical rate of the channel, there exists a rate-dependent scaling such that the associated modulo-lattice channel attains the error exponent of the AWGN channel. A geometric explanation for this result is developed…
In this paper, we consider the AWGN channel with a power constraint called the $(σ, ρ)$-power constraint, which is motivated by energy harvesting communication systems. Given a codeword, the constraint imposes a limit of $σ+ k ρ$ on the total power of any $k\geq 1$ consecutive transmitted symbols. Such a channel has infinite memory and evaluating its exact capacity is a difficult task. Consequently, we establish an $n$-letter capacity expression and seek bounds for the same. We obtain a lower bound on capacity by considering the volume of ${\cal S}_n(σ, ρ) \subseteq \mathbb{R}^n$, which is the…
It is well known that orthogonal coding can be used to approach the Shannon capacity of the power-constrained AWGN channel without a bandwidth constraint. This correspondence describes a semi-orthogonal variation of pulse position modulation that is sequential in nature -- bits can be ``streamed across'' without having to buffer up blocks of bits at the transmitter. ML decoding results in an exponentially small probability of error as a function of tolerated receiver delay and thus eventually a zero probability of error on every transmitted bit. In the high-rate regime, a matching upper bound …
This paper investigates the capacity region of the three-receiver AWGN broadcast channel where the receivers (i) have private-message requests and (ii) may know some of the messages requested by other receivers as side information. We first classify all 64 possible side information configurations into eight groups, each consisting of eight members. We next construct transmission schemes, and derive new inner and outer bounds for the groups. This establishes the capacity region for 52 out of 64 possible side information configurations. For six groups (i.e., groups 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, and 8 in our te…
$M$-ary signal transmission over AWGN channel with additive $Q$-ary interference where the sequence of i.i.d. interference symbols is known causally at the transmitter is considered. Shannon's theorem for channels with side information at the transmitter is used to formulate the capacity of the channel. It is shown that by using at most $MQ-Q+1$ out of $M^Q$ input symbols of the \emph{associated} channel, the capacity is achievable. For the special case where the Gaussian noise power is zero, a sufficient condition, which is independent of interference, is given for the capacity to be $\log_2 …
In this paper, we perform a threshold analysis of braided convolutional codes (BCCs) on the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. The decoding thresholds are estimated by Monte-Carlo density evolution (MC-DE) techniques and compared with approximate thresholds from an erasure channel prediction. The results show that, with spatial coupling, the predicted thresholds are very accurate and quickly approach capacity if the coupling memory is increased. For uncoupled ensembles with random puncturing, the prediction can be improved with help of the AWGN threshold of the unpunctured ensemble.
It has previously been shown that ensembles of terminated protograph-based low-density parity-check (LDPC) convolutional codes have a typical minimum distance that grows linearly with block length and that they are capable of achieving capacity approaching iterative decoding thresholds on the binary erasure channel (BEC). In this paper, we review a recent result that the dramatic threshold improvement obtained by terminating LDPC convolutional codes extends to the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. Also, using a (3,6)-regular protograph-based LDPC convolutional code ensemble as an e…
We study the diversity order vs rate of an additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel in the whole capacity region. We show that for discrete input as well as for continuous input, Gallager's upper bounds on error probability have exponential diversity in low and high rate region but only subexponential in the mid-rate region. For the best available lower bounds and for the practical codes one observes exponential diversity throughout the capacity region. However we also show that performance of practical codes is close to Gallager's upper bounds and the mid-rate subexponential diversity has…
In this paper, we derive upper and lower bounds as well as a simple closed-form approximation for the capacity of the continuous-time, bandlimited, additive white Gaussian noise channel in a three-dimensional free-space electromagnetic propagation environment subject to constraints on the total effective antenna aperture area of the link and a total transmitter power constraint. We assume that the communication range is much larger than the radius of the sphere containing the antennas at both ends of the link, and we show that, in general, the capacity can only be achieved by transmitting mult…
We study the problem of communication over an additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel with an AWGN feedback channel. When the feedback channel is noiseless, the classic Schalkwijk-Kailath (S-K) scheme is known to achieve capacity in a simple sequential fashion, while attaining reliability superior to non-feedback schemes. In this work, we show how simplicity and reliability can be attained even when the feedback is noisy, provided that the feedback channel is sufficiently better than the feedforward channel. Specifically, we introduce a low-complexity low-delay interactive scheme that ope…
The capacity-achieving input distribution of the discrete-time, additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel with an amplitude constraint is discrete and seems difficult to characterize explicitly. A dual capacity expression is used to derive analytic capacity upper bounds for scalar and vector AWGN channels. The scalar bound improves on McKellips' bound and is within 0.1 bits of capacity for all signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs). The two-dimensional bound is within 0.15 bits of capacity provably up to 4.5 dB, and numerical evidence suggests a similar gap for all SNRs.
We consider the distributional connection between the lossy compressed representation of a high-dimensional signal $X$ using a random spherical code and the observation of $X$ under an additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN). We show that the Wasserstein distance between a bitrate-$R$ compressed version of $X$ and its observation under an AWGN-channel of signal-to-noise ratio $2^{2R}-1$ is sub-linear in the problem dimension. We utilize this fact to connect the risk of an estimator based on an AWGN-corrupted version of $X$ to the risk attained by the same estimator when fed with its bitrate-$R$ q…
Fundamental limits of covert communication have been studied in literature for different models of scalar channels. It was shown that, over $n$ independent channel uses, $\mathcal{O}(\sqrt{n})$ bits can transmitted reliably over a public channel while achieving an arbitrarily low probability of detection (LPD) by other stations. This result is well known as square-root law and even to achieve this diminishing rate of covert communication, some form of shared secret is needed between the transmitter and the receiver. In this paper, we establish the limits of LPD communication over the MIMO AWGN…
This paper considers the three-receiver AWGN broadcast channel where the receivers (i) have private-message requests and (ii) know some of the messages requested by other receivers as side information. For this setup, all possible side information configurations have been recently classified into eight groups and the capacity of the channel has been established for six groups (Asadi et al., ISIT 2014). We propose inner and outer bounds for the two remaining groups, groups 4 and 7. A distinguishing feature of these two groups is that the weakest receiver knows the requested message of the stron…
Linear coding schemes have been the main choice of coding for the additive white Gaussian noise broadcast channel (AWGN-BC) with noiseless feedback in the literature. The achievable rate regions of these schemes go well beyond the capacity region of the AWGN-BC without feedback. In this paper, a concatenating coding design for the $K$-user AWGN-BC with noisy feedback is proposed that relies on linear feedback schemes to achieve rate tuples outside the no-feedback capacity region. Specifically, a linear feedback code for the AWGN-BC with noisy feedback is used as an inner code that creates an e…
In this paper, the k-th order autoregressive moving average (ARMA(k)) Gaussian wiretap channel with noiseless causal feedback is considered, in which an eavesdropper receives noisy observations of the signals in both forward and feedback channels. It is shown that a variant of the generalized Schalkwijk-Kailath scheme, a capacity-achieving coding scheme for the feedback Gaussian channel, achieves the same maximum rate for the same channel with the presence of an eavesdropper. Therefore, the secrecy capacity is equal to the feedback capacity without the presence of an eavesdropper for the feedb…
In this paper, we propose a new class of lattices constructed from polar codes, namely polar lattices, to achieve the capacity $\frac{1}{2}\log(1+\SNR)$ of the additive white Gaussian-noise (AWGN) channel. Our construction follows the multilevel approach of Forney \textit{et al.}, where we construct a capacity-achieving polar code on each level. The component polar codes are shown to be naturally nested, thereby fulfilling the requirement of the multilevel lattice construction. We prove that polar lattices are \emph{AWGN-good}. Furthermore, using the technique of source polarization, we propos…
The polar receiver architecture is a receiver design that captures the envelope and phase information of the signal rather than its in-phase and quadrature components. Several studies have demonstrated the robustness of polar receivers to phase noise and other nonlinearities. Yet, the information-theoretic limits of polar receivers with finite-precision quantizers have not been investigated in the literature. The main contribution of this work is to identify the optimal signaling strategy for the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel with polar quantization at the output. More precisely…
In this paper, the capacity of the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel, affected by time-varying Wiener phase noise is investigated. Tight upper and lower bounds on the capacity of this channel are developed. The upper bound is obtained by using the duality approach, and considering a specific distribution over the output of the channel. In order to lower-bound the capacity, first a family of capacity-achieving input distributions is found by solving a functional optimization of the channel mutual information. Then, lower bounds on the capacity are obtained by drawing samples from the…
In this paper, we propose a new approach to proving results regarding channel coding schemes based on construction-A lattices for the Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) channel that yields new characterizations of the code construction parameters, i.e., the primes and dimensions of the codes, as functions of the block-length. The approach we take introduces an averaging argument that explicitly involves the considered parameters. This averaging argument is applied to a generalized Loeliger ensemble to provide a more practical proof of the existence of AWGN-good lattices, and to characterize …
For a state-dependent DMC with input alphabet $\mathcal{X}$ and state alphabet $\mathcal{S}$ where the i.i.d. state sequence is known causally at the transmitter, it is shown that by using at most $|\mathcal{X}||\mathcal{S}|-|\mathcal{S}|+1$ out of $|\mathcal{X}|^{|\mathcal{S}|}$ input symbols of the Shannon's \emph{associated} channel, the capacity is achievable. As an example of state-dependent channels with side information at the transmitter, $M$-ary signal transmission over AWGN channel with additive $Q$-ary interference where the sequence of i.i.d. interference symbols is known causally …
In this paper, we study power management (PM) policies for an Energy Harvesting Additive White Gaussian Noise (EH-AWGN) channel. The arrival rate of the harvested energy is assumed to remain unchanged during each data frame (block code) and to change independently across block codes. The harvested energy sequence is known causally (online) at the transmitter. The transmitter is equipped with a rechargeable battery with infinite energy storage capacity. The transmitter is able to adapt the allocated energy and the corresponding transmission rate of each block according to a PM policy. Three nov…
We develop several lower bounds on the capacity of binary input symmetric output channels with synchronization errors which also suffer from other types of impairments such as substitutions, erasures, additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) etc. More precisely, we show that if the channel with synchronization errors can be decomposed into a cascade of two channels where only the first one suffers from synchronization errors and the second one is a memoryless channel, a lower bound on the capacity of the original channel in terms of the capacity of the synchronization error-only channel can be der…
This paper considers the three-way channel, consisting of three nodes, where each node broadcasts a message to the two other nodes. The capacity of the finite-field three-way channel is derived, and is shown to be achievable using a non-cooperative scheme without feedback. The same scheme is also shown to achieve the equal-rate capacity (when all nodes transmit at the same rate) of the sender-symmetrical (each node receives the same SNR from the other two nodes) phase-fading AWGN channel. In the light that the non-cooperative scheme is not optimal in general, a cooperative feedback scheme that…
Consider a problem of forward error-correction for the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. For finite blocklength codes the backoff from the channel capacity is inversely proportional to the square root of the blocklength. In this paper it is shown that codes achieving this tradeoff must necessarily have peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) proportional to logarithm of the blocklength. This is extended to codes approaching capacity slower, and to PAPR measured at the output of an OFDM modulator. As a by-product the convergence of (Smith's) amplitude-constrained AWGN capacity to Shannon…
We consider the classical AWGN channel where the channel input is constrained to an amplitude constraint that stochastically varies at each channel use, independent of the message. This is an abstraction of an energy harvesting transmitter where the code symbol energy at each channel use is determined by an exogenous energy arrival process and there is no battery for energy storage. At each channel use, an independent realization of the amplitude constraint process is observed by the transmitter causally. This scenario is a state-dependent channel with perfect causal state information at the t…
This work establishes that the physical layer can be used to perform information-theoretic authentication in additive white Gaussian noise channels, as long as the adversary is not omniscient. The model considered consists of an encoder, decoder, and adversary, where the adversary has access to the message, a non-causal noisy observation of the encoder's transmission, and unlimited transmission power, while the decoder observes a noisy version of the sum of the encoder and adversary's outputs. A method to modify a generic existing channel code to enable authentication is presented. It is shown…
Modulo-wrapping receivers have attracted interest in several areas of digital communications, including precoding and lattice coding. The asymptotic capacity and error performance of the modulo AWGN channel have been well established. However, due to underlying assumptions of the asymptotic analyses, these findings might not always be realistic in physical world applications, which are often dimension- or delay-limited. In this work, the optimum ways to achieve minimum probability of error for binary signaling through a scalar modulo AWGN channel is examined under different scenarios where the…
In this work, an explicit wiretap coding scheme based on polar lattices is proposed to achieve the secrecy capacity of the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) wiretap channel. Firstly, polar lattices are used to construct secrecy-good lattices for the mod-$Λ_s$ Gaussian wiretap channel. Then we propose an explicit shaping scheme to remove this mod-$Λ_s$ front end and extend polar lattices to the genuine Gaussian wiretap channel. The shaping technique is based on the lattice Gaussian distribution, which leads to a binary asymmetric channel at each level for the multilevel lattice codes. By emp…
Bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM) is a practical approach for reliable communication over the AWGN channel in the bandwidth limited regime. For a signal point constellation with 2^m points, BICM labels the signal points with bit strings of length m and then treats these m bits separately both at the transmitter and the receiver. BICM capacity is defined as the maximum of a certain achievable rate. Maximization has to be done over the probability mass functions (pmf) of the bits. This is a non-convex optimization problem. So far, the optimal bit pmfs were determined via exhaustive search,…
Hierarchical modulation (HM) is able to provide different levels of protection for data streams and achieve a rate region that cannot be realized by traditional orthogonal schemes, such as time division (TD). Nevertheless, criterions and algorithms for general HM design are not available in existing literatures. In this paper, we jointly optimize the constellation positions and binary labels for HM to be used in additive white gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. Based on bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM) with successive interference cancellation (SIC) capacity, our main purpose is to maximize…
This paper provides an upper-bound for the capacity of the underwater acoustic (UWA) channel with dominant noise sources and generalized fading environments. Previous works have shown that UWA channel noise statistics are not necessary Gaussian, especially in a shallow water environment which is dominated by impulsive noise sources. In this case, noise is best represented by the Generalized Gaussian (GG) noise model with a shaping parameter $β$. On the other hand, fading in the UWA channel is generally represented using an $α$-$μ$ distribution, which is a generalization of a wide range of well…
This paper investigates the achievable rates of an additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) energy-harvesting (EH) channel with an infinite battery. The EH process is characterized by a sequence of blocks of harvested energy, which is known causally at the source. The harvested energy remains constant within a block while the harvested energy across different blocks is characterized by a sequence of independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) random variables. The blocks have length $L$, which can be interpreted as the coherence time of the energy arrival process. If $L$ is a constant or grow…
Despite considerable progress on the information-theoretic broadcast channel, the capacity region of fading broadcast channels with channel state known at the receivers but unknown at the transmitter remains unresolved. We address this subject by introducing a layered erasure broadcast channel model in which each component channel has a state that specifies the received signal levels in an instance of a deterministic binary expansion channel. We find the capacity region of this class of broadcast channels. The capacity achieving strategy assigns each signal level to the user that derives the m…
Although extensively investigated, the capacity of the two-hop half-duplex (HD) relay channel is not fully understood. In particular, a capacity expression which can be easily evaluated is not available and an explicit coding scheme which achieves the capacity is not known either. In this paper, we derive a new expression for the capacity of the two-hop HD relay channel by simplifying previously derived converse expressions. Compared to previous results, the new capacity expression can be easily evaluated. Moreover, we propose an explicit coding scheme which achieves the capacity. To achieve t…
