In this paper, the capacity of the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel, affected by time-varying Wiener phase noise is investigated. Tight upper and lower bounds on the capacity of this channel are developed. The upper bound is obtained by using the duality approach, and considering a specific distribution over the output of the channel. In order to lower-bound the capacity, first a family of capacity-achieving input distributions is found by solving a functional optimization of the channel mutual information. Then, lower bounds on the capacity are obtained by drawing samples from the proposed distributions through Monte-Carlo simulations. The proposed capacity-achieving input distributions are circularly symmetric, non-Gaussian, and the input amplitudes are correlated over time. The evaluated capacity bounds are tight for a wide range of signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) values, and thus they can be used to quantify the capacity. Specifically, the bounds follow the well-known AWGN capacity curve at low SNR, while at high SNR, they coincide with the high-SNR capacity result available in the literature for the phase-noise channel.
A continuous-time Wiener phase noise channel with an integrate-and-dump multi-sample receiver is studied. A lower bound to the capacity with an average input power constraint is derived, and a high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) analysis is performed. The capacity pre-log depends on the oversampling factor, and amplitude and phase modulation do not equally contribute to capacity at high SNR.
A discrete-time Wiener phase noise channel with an integrate-and-dump multi-sample receiver is studied. An upper bound to the capacity with an average input power constraint is derived, and a high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) analysis is performed. If the oversampling factor grows as $\text{SNR}^α$ for $0\le α\le 1$, then the capacity pre-log is at most $(1+α)/2$ at high SNR.
The discrete-time Wiener phase noise channel with an integrate-and-dump multi-sample receiver is studied. A novel outer bound on the capacity with an average input power constraint is derived as a function of the oversampling factor. This outer bound yields the degrees of freedom for the scenario in which the oversampling factor grows with the transmit power $P$ as $P^α$. The result shows, perhaps surprisingly, that the largest pre-log that can be attained with phase modulation at high signal-to-noise ratio is at most $1/4$.
The capacity of the discrete-time channel affected by both additive Gaussian noise and Wiener phase noise is studied. Novel inner and outer bounds are presented, which differ of at most $6.65$ bits per channel use for all channel parameters. The capacity of this model can be subdivided in three regimes: (i) for large values of the frequency noise variance, the channel behaves similarly to a channel with circularly uniform iid phase noise; (ii) when the frequency noise variance is small, the effects of the additive noise dominate over those of the phase noise, while (iii) for intermediate value…
A discrete-time Wiener phase noise channel model is introduced in which multiple samples are available at the output for every input symbol. A lower bound on the capacity is developed. At high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), if the number of samples per symbol grows with the square root of the SNR, the capacity pre-log is at least 3/4. This is strictly greater than the capacity pre-log of the Wiener phase noise channel with only one sample per symbol, which is 1/2. It is shown that amplitude modulation achieves a pre-log of 1/2 while phase modulation achieves a pre-log of at least 1/4.
In this paper, the capacity of the oversampled Wiener phase noise (OWPN) channel is investigated. The OWPN channel is a discrete-time point-to-point channel with a multi-sample receiver in which the channel output is affected by both additive and multiplicative noise. The additive noise is a white standard Gaussian process while the multiplicative noise is a Wiener phase noise process. This channel generalizes a number of channel models previously studied in the literature which investigate the effects of phase noise on the channel capacity, such as the Wiener phase noise channel and the non-c…
We present bounds and a closed-form high-SNR expression for the capacity of multiple-antenna systems affected by Wiener phase noise. Our results are developed for the scenario where a single oscillator drives all the radio-frequency circuitries at each transceiver (common oscillator setup), the input signal is subject to a peak-power constraint, and the channel matrix is deterministic. This scenario is relevant for line-of-sight multiple-antenna microwave backhaul links with sufficiently small antenna spacing at the transceivers. For the 2 by 2 multiple-antenna case, for a Wiener phase-noise p…
A waveform channel is considered where the transmitted signal is corrupted by Wiener phase noise and additive white Gaussian noise. A discrete-time channel model that takes into account the effect of filtering on the phase noise is developed. The model is based on a multi-sample receiver, i.e., an integrate-and-dump filter whose output is sampled at a rate higher than the signaling rate. It is shown that, at high Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR), the multi-sample receiver achieves a rate that grows logarithmically with the SNR if the number of samples per symbol (oversampling factor) grows with the…
Channel coding over arbitrarily-permuted parallel channels was first studied by Willems et al. (2008). This paper introduces capacity-achieving polar coding schemes for arbitrarily-permuted parallel channels where the component channels are memoryless, binary-input and output-symmetric.
The concept and existence of sphere-bound-achieving and capacity-achieving lattices has been explained on AWGN channels by Forney. LDPC lattices, introduced by Sadeghi, perform very well under iterative decoding algorithm. In this work, we focus on an ensemble of regular LDPC lattices. We produce and investigate an ensemble of LDPC lattices with known properties. It is shown that these lattices are sphere-bound-achieving and capacity-achieving. As byproducts we find the minimum distance, coding gain, kissing number and an upper bound for probability of error for this special ensemble of regula…
We present a method of constructing rate-compatible polar codes that are capacity-achieving with low-complexity sequential decoders. The proposed code construction allows for incremental retransmissions at different rates in order to adapt to channel conditions. The main idea of the construction exploits the common characteristics of polar codes optimized for a sequence of successively degraded channels. The proposed approach allows for an optimized polar code to be used at every transmission thereby achieving capacity.
Recently it was proved that if a linear code is invariant under the action of a doubly transitive permutation group, it achieves the capacity of erasure channel. Therefore, it is of sufficient interest to classify all codes, invariant under such permutation groups. We take a step in this direction and give a review of all suitable groups and the known results on codes invariant under these groups. It turns out that there are capacity-achieving families of algebraic geometric codes.
The wiretap channel model of Wyner is one of the first communication models with both reliability and security constraints. Capacity-achieving schemes for various models of the wiretap channel have received considerable attention in recent literature. In this paper, we show that capacity of the general (not necessarily degraded or symmetric) wiretap channel under a "strong secrecy constraint" can be achieved using a transmission scheme based on polar codes. We also extend our construction to the case of broadcast channels with confidential messages defined by Csisz{á}r and K{örner}, achieving …
In this paper we study the capacity achieving input covariance matrices of a single user multiantenna channel based solely on the group of symmetries of its matrix of propagation coefficients. Our main result, which unifies and improves the techniques used in a variety of classical capacity theorems, uses the Haar (uniform) measure on the group of symmetries to establish the existence of a capacity achieving input covariance matrix in a very particular subset of the covariance matrices. This result allows us to provide simple proofs for old and new capacity theorems. Among other results, we sh…
This work considers a Poisson noise channel with an amplitude constraint. It is well-known that the capacity-achieving input distribution for this channel is discrete with finitely many points. We sharpen this result by introducing upper and lower bounds on the number of mass points. Concretely, an upper bound of order $\mathsf{A} \log^2(\mathsf{A})$ and a lower bound of order $\sqrt{\mathsf{A}}$ are established where $\mathsf{A}$ is the constraint on the input amplitude. In addition, along the way, we show several other properties of the capacity and capacity-achieving distribution. For examp…
We construct a channel coding scheme to achieve the capacity of any discrete memoryless channel based solely on the techniques of polar coding. In particular, we show how source polarization and randomness extraction via polarization can be employed to "shape" uniformly-distributed i.i.d. random variables into approximate i.i.d. random variables distributed ac- cording to the capacity-achieving distribution. We then combine this shaper with a variant of polar channel coding, constructed by the duality with source coding, to achieve the channel capacity. Our scheme inherits the low complexity e…
In this paper, we propose capacity-achieving communication schemes for Gaussian finite-state Markov channels (FSMCs) subject to an average channel input power constraint, under the assumption that the transmitters can have access to delayed noiseless output feedback as well as instantaneous or delayed channel state information (CSI). We show that the proposed schemes reveals connections between feedback communication and feedback control.
A rateless coding scheme transmits incrementally more and more coded bits over an unknown channel until all the information bits are decoded reliably by the receiver. We propose a new rateless coding scheme based on polar codes, and we show that this scheme is capacity-achieving, i.e. its information rate is as good as the best code specifically designed for the unknown channel. Previous rateless coding schemes are designed for specific classes of channels such as AWGN channels, binary erasure channels, etc. but the proposed rateless coding scheme is capacity-achieving for broad classes of cha…
This work studies the secrecy-capacity of a scalar-Gaussian wiretap channel with an amplitude constraint on the input. It is known that for this channel, the secrecy-capacity-achieving distribution is discrete with finitely many points. This work improves such result by showing an upper bound of the order $\frac{\mathsf{A}}{σ_1^2}$ where $\mathsf{A}$ is the amplitude constraint and $σ_1^2$ is the variance of the Gaussian noise over the legitimate channel.
The Schalkwijk-Kailath (SK) scheme, which achieves the capacity of the point-to-point white Gaussian channel with feedback, is secure by itself and also achieves the secrecy capacity of the Gaussian wiretap channel with feedback, i.e., the SK scheme is a self-secure capacity-achieving (SSCA) feedback scheme for the Gaussian wiretap channel. For the multi-user wiretap channels, recently, it has been shown that Ozarow's capacity-achieving feedback scheme for the two-user Gaussian multiple-access channel (GMAC) is the SSCA feedback scheme for the two-user Gaussian multiple-access wiretap channel …
The problem of capacity achieving (optimal) input probability measures has been widely investigated for several channel models with constrained inputs. So far, no outstanding generalizations have been derived. This paper does a forward step in this direction, by introducing a set of new requirements, for the class of real scalar conditional output probability measures, under which the optimal input probability measure is shown to be discrete with a finite number of probability mass points, when peak power limited.
Recently, it has been shown that a quantize-map-and-forward scheme approximately achieves (within a constant number of bits) the Gaussian relay network capacity for arbitrary topologies. This was established using Gaussian codebooks for transmission and random mappings at the relays. In this paper, we show that the same approximation result can be established by using lattices for transmission and quantization along with structured mappings at the relays.
Suppose a database containing $M$ records is replicated across $N$ servers, and a user wants to privately retrieve one record by accessing the servers such that identity of the retrieved record is secret against any up to $T$ servers. A scheme designed for this purpose is called a private information retrieval (PIR) scheme. In practice, capacity-achieving and small sub-packetization are both desired for PIR schemes, because the former implies the highest download rate and the latter usually means simple realization. For general values of $N,T,M$, the only known capacity-achieving PIR scheme wa…
A multilevel coded modulation scheme is studied that uses solely binary polar codes and Honda-Yamamoto probabilistic shaping. The scheme is shown to achieve the capacity of discrete memoryless channels with input alphabets of cardinality a power of two. The performance of finite-length implementations is compared to polar-coded probabilistic amplitude shaping and constant composition distribution matching.
We establish a general framework for construction of small ensembles of capacity achieving linear codes for a wide range of (not necessarily memoryless) discrete symmetric channels, and in particular, the binary erasure and symmetric channels. The main tool used in our constructions is the notion of randomness extractors and lossless condensers that are regarded as central tools in theoretical computer science. Same as random codes, the resulting ensembles preserve their capacity achieving properties under any change of basis. Using known explicit constructions of condensers, we obtain specifi…
This paper studies secrecy-capacity of an $n$-dimensional Gaussian wiretap channel under the peak-power constraint. This work determines the largest peak-power constraint $\bar{\mathsf{R}}_n$ such that an input distribution uniformly distributed on a single sphere is optimal; this regime is termed the small-amplitude regime. The asymptotic of $\bar{\mathsf{R}}_n$ as $n$ goes to infinity is completely characterized as a function of noise variance at both receivers. Moreover, the secrecy-capacity is also characterized in a form amenable for computation. Furthermore, several numerical examples ar…
Communication over a multiple access channel is considered. Each user modulates his signal as a superposition of redundant data streams where interconnection of data bits can be represented by means of a sparse graph. The receiver observes a signal resulting from the coupling of the sparse modulation graphs. Iterative interference cancellation decoding is analyzed. It is proved that spatial graph coupling allows to achieve the AWGN channel capacity with equal power transmissions.
Several information-theoretic studies on channels with output quantization have identified the capacity-achieving input distributions for different fading channels with 1-bit in-phase and quadrature (I/Q) output quantization. However, an exact characterization of the capacity-achieving input distribution for channels with multi-bit phase quantization has not been provided. In this paper, we consider four different channel models with multi-bit phase quantization at the output and identify the optimal input distribution for each channel model. We first consider a complex Gaussian channel with $…
Motivated by a wide-spread use of convex optimization techniques, convexity properties of bit error rate of the maximum likelihood detector operating in the AWGN channel are studied for arbitrary constellations and bit mappings, which also includes coding under maximum-likelihood decoding. Under this generic setting, the pairwise probability of error and bit error rate are shown to be convex functions of the SNR and noise power in the high SNR/low noise regime with explicitly-determined boundary. Any code, including capacity-achieving ones, whose decision regions include the hardened noise sph…
In this paper, we prove the existence of capacity achieving linear codes with random binary sparse generating matrices. The results on the existence of capacity achieving linear codes in the literature are limited to the random binary codes with equal probability generating matrix elements and sparse parity-check matrices. Moreover, the codes with sparse generating matrices reported in the literature are not proved to be capacity achieving. As opposed to the existing results in the literature, which are based on optimal maximum a posteriori decoders, the proposed approach is based on a differe…
Consider the problem of private information retrieval (PIR) over a distributed storage system where $M$ records are stored across $N$ servers by using an $[N,K]$ MDS code. For simplicity, this problem is usually referred as the coded PIR problem. In 2016, Banawan and Ulukus designed the first capacity-achieving coded PIR scheme with sub-packetization $KN^{M}$ and access number $MKN^{M}$, where capacity characterizes the minimal download size for retrieving per unit of data, and sub-packetization and access number are two metrics closely related to implementation complexity. In this paper, we f…
We prove that a class of distance-optimal local reconstruction codes (LRCs), an important family of repair-efficient codes for distributed storage systems, achieve the maximum distance separable private information retrieval capacity for the case of noncolluding nodes. This particular class of codes includes Pyramid codes and other LRCs proposed in the literature.
The per-sample zero-dispersion channel model of the optical fiber is considered. It is shown that capacity is uniquely achieved by an input probability distribution that has continuous uniform phase and discrete amplitude that takes on finitely many values. This result holds when the channel is subject to general input cost constraints, that include a peak amplitude constraint and a joint average and peak amplitude constraint.
In this paper, diffusion-based molecular commu- nication with ligand receptor receivers is studied. Information messages are assumed to be encoded via variations of the con- centration of molecules. The randomness in the ligand reception process induces uncertainty in the communication; limiting the rate of information decoding. We model the ligand receptor receiver by a set of finite-state Markov channels and study the general capacity of such a receiver. Furthermore, the i.i.d. capacity of the receiver is characterized as a lower bound for the general capacity. It is also proved that a finit…
Sparse regression codes (SPARCs) are a promising coding scheme that can approach the Shannon limit over Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) channels. Previous works have proven the capacity-achieving property of SPARCs with Gaussian design matrices. We generalize these results to right orthogonally invariant ensembles that allow for more structured design matrices. With the Vector Approximate Message Passing (VAMP) decoder, we rigorously demonstrate the exponentially decaying error probability for design matrices that satisfy a certain criterion with the exponentially decaying power allocatio…

The capacity achieving probability mass function (PMF) of a finite signal constellation with an average power constraint is in most cases non-uniform. A common approach to generate non-uniform input PMFs is Huffman shaping, which consists of first approximating the capacity achieving PMF by a sampled Gaussian density and then to calculate the Huffman code of the sampled Gaussian density. The Huffman code is then used as a prefix-free modulation code. This approach showed good results in practice, can however lead to a significant gap to capacity. In this work, a method is proposed that efficie…
This paper investigates reducing sub-packetization of capacity-achieving schemes for uncoded Storage Constrained Private Information Retrieval (SC-PIR) systems. In the SC-PIR system, a user aims to retrieve one out of $K$ files from $N$ servers while revealing nothing about its identity to any individual server, in which the $K$ files are stored at the $N$ servers in an uncoded form and each server can store up to $μK$ equivalent files, where $μ$ is the normalized storage capacity of each server. We first prove that there exists a capacity-achieving SC-PIR scheme for a given storage design if …
We propose a method to increase the capacity achieved by uniform prior in discrete memoryless channels (DMC) with high input cardinality. It consists in appropriately reducing the input set. Different design criteria of the input subset are discussed. We develop an efficient algorithm to solve this problem based on the maximization of the cut-off rate. The method is applied to a mono-bit transceiver MIMO system, and it is shown that the capacity can be approached within tenths of a dB by employing standard binary codes while avoiding the use of distribution shapers.
We propose a private information retrieval (PIR) protocol for distributed storage systems with noncolluding nodes where data is stored using an arbitrary linear code. An expression for the PIR rate, i.e., the ratio of the amount of retrieved data per unit of downloaded data, is derived, and a necessary and a sufficient condition for codes to achieve the maximum distance separable (MDS) PIR capacity are given. The necessary condition is based on the generalized Hamming weights of the storage code, while the sufficient condition is based on code automorphisms. We show that cyclic codes and Reed-…
We construct concatenated capacity-achieving quantum codes for noisy optical quantum channels. We demonstrate that the error-probability of capacity-achieving quantum polar encoding can be reduced by the proposed low-complexity concatenation scheme.
Achieving security against adversaries with unlimited computational power is of great interest in a communication scenario. Since polar codes are capacity achieving codes with low encoding-decoding complexity and they can approach perfect secrecy rates for binary-input degraded wiretap channels in symmetric settings, they are investigated extensively in the literature recently. In this paper, a polar coding scheme to achieve secrecy capacity in non-symmetric binary input channels is proposed. The proposed scheme satisfies security and reliability conditions. The wiretap channel is assumed to b…
In this paper, we propose a new class of lattices constructed from polar codes, namely polar lattices, to achieve the capacity $\frac{1}{2}\log(1+\SNR)$ of the additive white Gaussian-noise (AWGN) channel. Our construction follows the multilevel approach of Forney \textit{et al.}, where we construct a capacity-achieving polar code on each level. The component polar codes are shown to be naturally nested, thereby fulfilling the requirement of the multilevel lattice construction. We prove that polar lattices are \emph{AWGN-good}. Furthermore, using the technique of source polarization, we propos…
This paper studies an $n$-dimensional additive Gaussian noise channel with a peak-power-constrained input. It is well known that, in this case, when $n=1$ the capacity-achieving input distribution is discrete with finitely many mass points, and when $n>1$ the capacity-achieving input distribution is supported on finitely many concentric shells. However, due to the previous proof technique, neither the exact number of mass points/shells of the optimal input distribution nor a bound on it was available. This paper provides an alternative proof of the finiteness of the number mass points/shells o…
