Using a connected dominating set (CDS) to serve as the virtual backbone of a wireless sensor network (WSN) is an effective way to save energy and reduce the impact of broadcasting storms. Since nodes may fail due to accidental damage or energy depletion, it is desirable that the virtual backbone is fault tolerant. This could be modeled as a k-connected, m-fold dominating set ((k,m)-CDS). Given a virtual undirected network G=(V,E), a subset C\subset V is a (k,m)-CDS of G if (i) G[C], the subgraph of G induced by C is k-connected, and (ii) each node in V\C has at least m neighbors in C. We present a two-phase greedy algorithm for computing a (2,2)-CDS that achieves an asymptotic approximation factor of $(3+\ln(Δ+2))$, where $Δ$ is the maximum degree of G. This result improves on the previous best known performance factor of $(4+\lnΔ+2\ln(2+\lnΔ))$ for this problem.
We implement and test the performances of several approximation algorithms for computing the minimum dominating set of a graph. These algorithms are the standard greedy algorithm, the recent LP rounding algorithms and a hybrid algorithm that we design by combining the greedy and LP rounding algorithms. All algorithms perform better than anticipated in their theoretical analysis, and have small performance ratios, measured as the size of output divided by the LP objective lower-bound. However, each may have advantages over the others. For instance, LP rounding algorithm normally outperforms the…
Given a graph $G=(V,E)$ and an integer $k$, the Minimum Membership Dominating Set (MMDS) problem seeks to find a dominating set $S \subseteq V$ of $G$ such that for each $v \in V$, $|N[v] \cap S|$ is at most $k$. We investigate the parameterized complexity of the problem and obtain the following results about MMDS: W[1]-hardness of the problem parameterized by the pathwidth (and thus, treewidth) of the input graph. W[1]-hardness parameterized by $k$ on split graphs. An algorithm running in time $2^{\mathcal{O}(\textbf{vc})} |V|^{\mathcal{O}(1)}$, where $\textbf{vc}$ is the size of a minimum-si…
Given a graph $G=(V,E)$ and an integer $k \ge 1$, a $k$-hop dominating set $D$ of $G$ is a subset of $V$, such that, for every vertex $v \in V$, there exists a node $u \in D$ whose hop-distance from $v$ is at most $k$. A $k$-hop dominating set of minimum cardinality is called a minimum $k$-hop dominating set. In this paper, we present linear-time algorithms that find a minimum $k$-hop dominating set in unicyclic and cactus graphs. To achieve this, we show that the $k$-dominating set problem on unicycle graph reduces to the piercing circular arcs problem, and show a linear-time algorithm for pi…
In metric search, worst-case analysis is of little value, as the search invariably degenerates to a linear scan for ill-behaved data. Consequently, much effort has been expended on more nuanced descriptions of what performance might in fact be attainable, including heuristic baselines like the AESA family, as well as statistical proxies such as intrinsic dimensionality. This paper gets to the heart of the matter with an exact characterization of the best performance actually achievable for any given data set and query. Specifically, linear-time objective-preserving reductions are established i…
In the problem of minimum connected dominating set with routing cost constraint, we are given a graph $G=(V,E)$, and the goal is to find the smallest connected dominating set $D$ of $G$ such that, for any two non-adjacent vertices $u$ and $v$ in $G$, the number of internal nodes on the shortest path between $u$ and $v$ in the subgraph of $G$ induced by $D \cup \{u,v\}$ is at most $α$ times that in $G$. For general graphs, the only known previous approximability result is an $O(\log n)$-approximation algorithm ($n=|V|$) for $α= 1$ by Ding et al. For any constant $α> 1$, we give an $O(n^{1-\frac…
In this paper we study the dynamic versions of two basic graph problems: Minimum Dominating Set and its variant Minimum Connected Dominating Set. For those two problems, we present algorithms that maintain a solution under edge insertions and edge deletions in time $O(Δ\cdot \text{polylog}~n)$ per update, where $Δ$ is the maximum vertex degree in the graph. In both cases, we achieve an approximation ratio of $O(\log n)$, which is optimal up to a constant factor (under the assumption that $P \ne NP$). Although those two problems have been widely studied in the static and in the distributed sett…
An algorithm is presented that solves the Minimum Dominating Set problem exactly using polynomial space based on dynamic programming for a tree decomposition. A direct application of dynamic programming based on a tree decomposition would result in an exponential space algorithm, but we use zeta transforms to obtain a polynomial space algorithm in exchange for a moderate increase of the time. This framework was pioneered by Lokshtanov and Nederlof 2010 and adapted to a dynamic setting by Fürer and Yu 2017. Our space-efficient algorithm is a parametrized algorithm based on tree-depth and treewi…
The Minimum Dominating Set (MDS) problem is not only one of the most fundamental problems in distributed computing, it is also one of the most challenging ones. While it is well-known that minimum dominating sets cannot be approximated locally on general graphs, over the last years, several breakthroughs have been made on computing local approximations on sparse graphs. This paper presents a deterministic and local constant factor approximation for minimum dominating sets on bounded genus graphs, a very large family of sparse graphs. Our main technical contribution is a new analysis of a sligh…
In the present paper, we propose an efficient local search for the minimum independent dominating set problem. We consider a local search that uses $k$-swap as the neighborhood operation. Given a feasible solution $S$, it is the operation of obtaining another feasible solution by dropping exactly $k$ vertices from $S$ and then by adding any number of vertices to it. We show that, when $k=2$, (resp., $k=3$ and a given solution is minimal with respect to 2-swap), we can find an improved solution in the neighborhood or conclude that no such solution exists in $O(nΔ)$ (resp., $O(nΔ^3)$) time, wher…
In this article, we study a generalized version of the maximum independent set and minimum dominating set problems, namely, the maximum $d$-distance independent set problem and the minimum $d$-distance dominating set problem on unit disk graphs for a positive integer $d>0$. We first show that the maximum $d$-distance independent set problem and the minimum $d$-distance dominating set problem belongs to NP-hard class. Next, we propose a simple polynomial-time constant-factor approximation algorithms and PTAS for both the problems.
Efficient communication between nodes in ad-hoc networks can be established through repeated cluster formations with designated \textit{cluster-heads}. In this context minimum d-hop dominating set problem was introduced for cluster formation in ad-hoc networks and is proved to be NP-complete. Hence, an exact solution to this problem for certain subclass of graphs (representing an ad-hoc network) can be beneficial. In this short paper we perform computational complexity analysis of minimum d-hop dominating set problem for directed graphs with in-degree bounded by $1$. The optimum solution of th…
In this paper, we study the {\sc Dominating Set} problem in random graphs. In a random graph, each pair of vertices are joined by an edge with a probability of $p$, where $p$ is a positive constant less than $1$. We show that, given a random graph in $n$ vertices, a minimum dominating set in the graph can be computed in expected $2^{O(\log_{2}^{2}{n})}$ time. For the parameterized dominating set problem, we show that it cannot be solved in expected $O(f(k)n^{c})$ time unless the minimum dominating set problem can be approximated within a ratio of $o(\log_{2}n)$ in expected polynomial time, whe…
In the Connected Dominating Set problem we are given a graph $G=(V,E)$ and seek a minimum size dominating set $S \subseteq V$ such that the subgraph $G[S]$ of $G$ induced by $S$ is connected. In the $2$-Edge-Connected Dominating Set problem $G[S]$ should be $2$-edge-connected. We give the first non-trivial approximation algorithm for this problem, with expected approximation ratio $\tilde{O}(\log^2n)$.
The average-case complexity of a branch-and-bound algorithms for Minimum Dominating Set problem in random graphs in the G(n,p) model is studied. We identify phase transitions between subexponential and exponential average-case complexities, depending on the growth of the probability p with respect to the number n of nodes.
Consider a graph with nonnegative node weight. A vertex subset is called a CDS (connected dominating set) if every other node has at least one neighbor in the subset and the subset induces a connected subgraph. Furthermore, if every other node has at least $m$ neighbors in the subset, then the node subset is called a $(1,m)$CDS. The minimum-weight $(1,m)$CDS problem aims at finding a $(1,m)$CDS with minimum total node weight. In this paper, we present a new polynomial-time approximation algorithm for this problem with approximation ratio $2H(δ_{\max}+m-1)$, where $δ_{\max}$ is the maximum degr…
We study the approximability of the maximum size independent set (MIS) problem in bounded degree graphs. This is one of the most classic and widely studied NP-hard optimization problems. We focus on the well known minimum degree greedy algorithm for this problem. This algorithm iteratively chooses a minimum degree vertex in the graph, adds it to the solution and removes its neighbors, until the remaining graph is empty. The approximation ratios of this algorithm have been very widely studied, where it is augmented with an advice that tells the greedy which minimum degree vertex to choose if it…
We revisit the minimum dominating set problem on graphs with arboricity bounded by $α$. Bansal and Umboh [BU17] gave an $O(α)$-approximation LP rounding algorithm, which also translates into a near-linear time algorithm using general-purpose approximation results for explicit mixed packing and covering or pure covering LPs [KY14, You14, AZO19, Qua10]. Moreover, [BU17] showed that it is NP-hard to achieve an asymptotic improvement for the approximation factor. On the other hand, the previous two non-LP-based algorithms, by Lenzen and Wattenhofer [LW10], and Jones et al. [JLR+13], achieve an app…
We develop deterministic approximation algorithms for the minimum dominating set problem in the CONGEST model with an almost optimal approximation guarantee. For $ε>1/{\text{poly}}\log Δ$ we obtain two algorithms with approximation factor $(1+ε)(1+\ln (Δ+1))$ and with runtimes $2^{O(\sqrt{\log n \log\log n})}$ and $O(Δ\cdot\text{poly}\log Δ+\text{poly}\log Δ\log^{*} n)$, respectively. Further we show how dominating set approximations can be deterministically transformed into a connected dominating set in the \CONGEST model while only increasing the approximation guarantee by a constant factor.…
This paper proposes a greedy algorithm named as Big step greedy set cover algorithm to compute approximate minimum set cover. The Big step greedy algorithm, in each step selects p sets such that the union of selected p sets contains greatest number of uncovered elements and adds the selected p sets to partial set cover. The process of adding p sets is repeated until all the elements are covered. When p=1 it behaves like the classical greedy algorithm.
Using connected dominating set (CDS) to serve as a virtual backbone in a wireless networks can save energy and reduce interference. Since nodes may fail due to accidental damage or energy depletion, it is desirable that the virtual backbone has some fault-tolerance. A $k$-connected $m$-fold dominating set ($(k,m)$-CDS) of a graph $G$ is a node set $D$ such that every node in $V\setminus D$ has at least $m$ neighbors in $D$ and the subgraph of $G$ induced by $D$ is $k$-connected. Using $(k,m)$-CDS can tolerate the failure of $\min\{k-1,m-1\}$ nodes. In this paper, we study Minimum Weight $(1,m)…
The problem of finding a minimum-weight connected dominating set (CDS) of a given undirected graph has been studied actively, motivated by operations of wireless ad hoc networks. In this paper, we formulate a new stochastic variant of the problem. In this problem, each node in the graph has a hidden random state, which represents whether the node is active or inactive, and we seek a CDS of the graph that consists of the active nodes. We consider an adaptive algorithm for this problem, which repeat choosing nodes and observing the states of the nodes around the chosen nodes until a CDS is found…
We study two new versions of independent and dominating set problems on vertex-colored interval graphs, namely $f$-Balanced Independent Set ($f$-BIS) and $f$-Balanced Dominating Set ($f$-BDS). Let $G=(V,E)$ be a vertex-colored interval graph with a color assignment function $γ\colon V \rightarrow \{1,\ldots,k\}$ that maps all vertices in $G$ onto $k$ colors. A subset of vertices $S\subseteq V$ is called $f$-balanced if $S$ contains $f$ vertices from each color class. In the $f$-BIS and $f$-BDS problems, the objective is to compute an independent set or a dominating set that is $f$-balanced. We…
We examine the minimum entropy coupling problem, where one must find the minimum entropy variable that has a given set of distributions $S = \{p_1, \dots, p_m \}$ as its marginals. Although this problem is NP-Hard, previous works have proposed algorithms with varying approximation guarantees. In this paper, we show that the greedy coupling algorithm of [Kocaoglu et al., AAAI'17] is always within $\log_2(e)$ ($\approx 1.44$) bits of the minimum entropy coupling. In doing so, we show that the entropy of the greedy coupling is upper-bounded by $H\left(\bigwedge S \right) + \log_2(e)$. This improv…
A minimum dominating set for a digraph (directed graph) is a smallest set of vertices such that each vertex either belongs to this set or has at least one parent vertex in this set. We solve this hard combinatorial optimization problem approximately by a local algorithm of generalized leaf removal and by a message-passing algorithm of belief propagation. These algorithms can construct near-optimal dominating sets or even exact minimum dominating sets for random digraphs and also for real-world digraph instances. We further develop a core percolation theory and a replica-symmetric spin glass th…
The Minimum Dominating Set (MDS) problem is one of the most fundamental and challenging problems in distributed computing. While it is well-known that minimum dominating sets cannot be approximated locally on general graphs, over the last years, there has been much progress on computing local approximations on sparse graphs, and in particular planar graphs. In this paper we study distributed and deterministic MDS approximation algorithms for graph classes beyond planar graphs. In particular, we show that existing approximation bounds for planar graphs can be lifted to bounded genus graphs, and…
