Millimeter wave (mmWave) communications have been considered as a key technology for future 5G wireless networks. In order to overcome the severe propagation loss of mmWave channel, mmWave multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with analog/digital hybrid precoding and combining transceiver architecture have been widely considered. However, physical layer security (PLS) in mmWave MIMO systems and the secure hybrid beamformer design have not been well investigated. In this paper, we consider the problem of hybrid precoder and combiner design for secure transmission in mmWave MIMO systems in order to protect the legitimate transmission from eavesdropping. When eavesdropper's channel state information (CSI) is known, we first propose a joint analog precoder and combiner design algorithm which can prevent the information leakage to the eavesdropper. Then, the digital precoder and combiner are computed based on the obtained effective baseband channel to further maximize the secrecy rate. Next, if prior knowledge of the eavesdropper's CSI is unavailable, we develop an artificial noise (AN)-based hybrid beamforming approach, which can jam eavesdropper's reception while maintaining the quality-of-service (QoS) of intended receiver at the pre-specified level. Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed algorithms offer significant secrecy performance improvement compared with other hybrid beamforming algorithms.
This paper investigates the problem of hybrid precoder and combiner design for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems operating in millimeter-wave (mmWave) bands. We propose a novel iterative scheme to design the codebook-based analog precoder and combiner in forward and reverse channels. During each iteration, we apply compressive sensing (CS) technology to efficiently estimate the equivalent MIMO-OFDM mmWave channel. Then, the analog precoder or combiner is obtained based on the orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP) algorithm to alleviate …
Analog/digital hybrid precoder and combiner have been widely used in millimeter wave (mmWave) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems due to its energy-efficient and economic superiorities. Infinite resolution of phase shifters (PSs) for the analog beamformer can achieve very close performance compared to the full-digital scheme but will result in high complexity and intensive power consumption. Thus, more cost effective and energy efficient low resolution PSs are typically used in practical mmWave MIMO systems. In this paper, we consider the joint hybrid precoder and combiner design wit…
Millimeter-wave (mmWave) communications have been considered as a key technology for future 5G wireless networks because of the orders-of-magnitude wider bandwidth than current cellular bands. We propose to jointly select analog precoder and combiner pair for each data stream successively aiming at maximizing the channel gain while suppressing the interference between different data stre…
Millimeter wave (mmWave) communications have been considered as a key technology for next generation cellular systems and Wi-Fi networks because of its advances in providing orders-of-magnitude wider bandwidth than current wireless networks. Economical and energy efficient analog/digial hybrid precoding and combining transceivers have been often proposed for mmWave massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems to overcome the severe propagation loss of mmWave channels. One major shortcoming of existing solutions lies in the assumption of infinite or high-resolution phase shifters (PSs)…
We propose four hybrid combiner/precoder for downlink mmWave massive MU-MIMO systems. The design of a hybrid combiner/precoder is divided in two parts, analog and digital. The system baseband model shows that the signal processed by the mobile station can be interpreted as a received signal in the presence of colored Gaussian noise, therefore, since the digital part of the combiner and precoder do not have constraints for their generation, their designs can be based on any traditional signal processing that takes into account this kind of noise. To the best of our knowledge, this was not consi…
In this paper, we propose a Singular-Value-Decomposition-based variable-resolution Analog to Digital Converter (ADC) bit allocation design for a single-user Millimeter wave massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output receiver. We derive the optimality condition for bit allocation under a power constraint. This condition ensures optimal receiver performance in the Mean Squared Error (MSE) sense. We derive the MSE expression and show that it approaches the Cramer-Rao Lower Bound (CRLB). The CRLB is seen to be a function of the analog combiner, the digital combiner, and the bit allocation matrix. We a…
Channel estimation is useful in millimeter wave (mmWave) MIMO communication systems. Channel state information allows optimized designs of precoders and combiners under different metrics such as mutual information or signal-to-interference-noise (SINR) ratio. At mmWave, MIMO precoders and combiners are usually hybrid, since this architecture provides a means to trade-off power consumption and achievable rate. Channel estimation is challenging when using these architectures, however, since there is no direct access to the outputs of the different antenna elements in the array. The MIMO channel …
Millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication is considered as an indispensable technique for the next-generation backhaul/fronthaul network thanks to its large transmission bandwidth. Especially for heterogeneous network (HetNet), the mmWave full-dimension (FD)-MIMO is exploited to establish the backhaul/fronthaul link between phantom-cell base stations (BSs) and macro-cell BSs, where an efficient precoding is prerequisite. Against this background, this paper proposes a principle component analysis (PCA)-based hybrid precoding for wideband mmWave MIMO backhaul/fronthaul channels. We first propose an…
Millimeter wave (mmWave) signals experience orders-of-magnitude more pathloss than the microwave signals currently used in most wireless applications. MmWave systems must therefore leverage large antenna arrays, made possible by the decrease in wavelength, to combat pathloss with beamforming gain. Beamforming with multiple data streams, known as precoding, can be used to further improve mmWave spectral efficiency. Both beamforming and precoding are done digitally at baseband in traditional multi-antenna systems. The high cost and power consumption of mixed-signal devices in mmWave systems, how…
In this paper, we consider the amplify-and-forward relay networks in mmWave systems and propose a hybrid precoder/combiner design approach. The phase-only RF precoding/combining matrices are first designed to support multi-stream transmission, where we compensate the phase for the eigenmodes of the channel. Then, the baseband precoders/combiners are performed to achieve the maximum mutual information. Based on the data processing inequality for the mutual information, we first jointly design the baseband source and relay nodes to maximize the mutual information before the destination baseband …
Multicast beamforming is known to improve spectral efficiency. However, its benefits and challenges for hybrid precoders design in millimeter-wave (mmWave) systems remain understudied. To this end, this paper investigates the first joint design of hybrid transmit precoders (with an arbitrary number of finite-resolution phase shifts) and receive combiners for mmWave multi-group multicasting. Our proposed design leverages semidefinite relaxation (SDR), alternating optimization and Cholesky matrix factorization to sequentially optimize the digital/analog precoders at the transmitter and the combi…
This paper investigates the joint design of hybrid transmit precoder and analog receive combiners for single-group multicasting in millimeter-wave systems. We propose LB-GDM, a low-complexity learning-based approach that leverages gradient descent with momentum and alternating optimization to design (i) the digital and analog constituents of a hybrid transmitter and (ii) the analog combiners of each receiver. In addition, we also extend our proposed approach to design fully-digital precoders. We show through numerical evaluation that, implementing LB-GDM in either hybrid or digital precoders a…
This paper proposes a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided and angular-based hybrid beamforming (AB-HBF) technique for the millimeter wave (mmWave) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. The proposed RIS-AB-HBF architecture consists of three stages: (i) RF beamformer, (ii) baseband (BB) precoder/combiner, and (iii) RIS phase shift design. First, in order to reduce the number of RF chains and the channel estimation overhead, RF beamformers are designed based on the 3D geometry-based mmWave channel model using slow time-varying angular parameters of the channel. Second,…
In millimeter wave (mmWave) communication systems, existing hybrid beamforming solutions generally require a large number of high-resolution phase shifters (PSs) to realize analog beamformers, which still suffer from high hardware complexity and power consumption. Targeting at this problem, this article introduces a novel hardware-efficient hybrid precoding/combining architecture, which only employs a limited number of simple phase over-samplers (POSs) and a switch (SW) network to achieve maximum hardware efficiency while maintaining satisfactory spectral efficiency performance. The POS can be…
For millimeter-wave (mmWave) massive MIMO systems, the codebook-based analog beamforming (including transmit precoding and receive combining) is usually used to compensate the severe attenuation of mmWave signals. However, conventional beamforming schemes involve complicated search among pre-defined codebooks to find out the optimal pair of analog precoder and analog combiner. To solve this problem, by exploring the idea of turbo equalizer together with tabu search (TS) algorithm, we propose a Turbo-like beamforming scheme based on TS, which is called Turbo-TS beamforming in this paper, to ach…
Hybrid beamforming (HBF) is an attractive technology for practical massive multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) millimeter wave (mmWave) systems. Compared with the fully-connected HBF architecture, the partially-connected one can further reduce the hardware cost and power consumption. However, the special block diagonal structure of its analog beamforming matrix brings additional design challenges. In this paper, we develop effective HBF algorithms for spectral efficiency maximization (SEM) in mmWave massive MIMO systems with the partially-connected architecture. One main contribution is …
In this article, we investigate channel estimation for wideband millimeter-wave (mmWave) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) under hybrid architecture with lowprecision analog-to-digital converters (ADCs). To design channel estimation for the hybrid structure, both analog processing components and frequency-selective digital combiners need to be optimized. The proposed channel estimator follows the typical linear-minimum-mean-square-error (LMMSE) structure and applies for an arbitrary channel model. Moreover, for sparsity channels as in mmWave, the proposed estimator performs more ef…
In this paper, we propose a two-stage analog combining architecture for millimeter wave (mmWave) communications with hybrid analog/digital beamforming and low-resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs). We first derive a two-stage combining solution by solving a mutual information (MI) maximization problem without a constant modulus constraint on analog combiners. With the derived solution, the proposed receiver architecture splits the analog combining into a channel gain aggregation stage followed by a spreading stage to maximize the MI by effectively managing quantization error. We show …
This letter investigates the hybrid analog and digital beamforming (HBF) design for multiuser millimeter wave (mmWave) communication systems based on the minimum mean square error (MMSE) criterion. Using the alternating minimization method, the hybrid precoder of the base station (BS) and the hybrid combiners of the users are alternatively optimized. It is shown that both the optimized digital precoder of the BS and the digital combiners of the users have closed-form expressions, and their corresponding analog ones can be efficiently obtained via generalized eigen-decomposition. Simulation res…
Hybrid precoding design is challenging for millimeter-wave (mmWave) massive MIMO. Most prior hybrid precoding schemes are designed to maximize the sum spectral efficiency (SSE), while seldom investigate the bit-error-rate (BER). Therefore, we propose an over-sampling codebook (OSC)-based hybrid minimum sum-mean-square-error (min-SMSE) precoding scheme for mmWave multi-user three-dimensional (3D)-MIMO systems to optimize the BER, where multi-user transmission with multiple data streams for each user is considered. Specifically, given the effective baseband channel consisting of the real channel…
Millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication operated in frequency bands between 30 and 300 GHz has attracted extensive attention due to the potential ability of offering orders of magnitude greater bandwidths combined with further gains via beamforming and spatial multiplexing from multi-element antenna arrays. MmWave system may exploit the hybrid analog and digital precoding to achieve simultaneously the diversity, array and multiplexing gain with a lower cost of implementation. Motivated by this, in this paper, we investigate the design of hybrid precoder and combiner with sub-connected architect…
Hybrid analog and digital precoding allows millimeter wave (mmWave) systems to achieve both array and multiplexing gain. The design of the hybrid precoders and combiners, though, is usually based on knowledge of the channel. Prior work on mmWave channel estimation with hybrid architectures focused on narrowband channels. Since mmWave systems will be wideband with frequency selectivity, it is vital to develop channel estimation solutions for hybrid architectures based wideband mmWave systems. In this paper, we develop a sparse formulation and compressed sensing based solutions for the wideband …
Hybrid analog-digital precoding is challenging for broadband millimeter-wave (mmWave) massive MIMO systems, since the analog precoder is frequency-flat but the mmWave channels are frequency-selective. In this paper, we propose a principal component analysis (PCA)-based broadband hybrid precoder/combiner design, where both the fully-connected array and partially-connected subarray (including the fixed and adaptive subarrays) are investigated. Specifically, we first design the hybrid precoder/combiner for fully-connected array and fixed subarray based on PCA, whereby a low-dimensional frequency-…
In this paper, we investigate hybrid analog/digital beamforming for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with low-resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) for millimeter wave (mmWave) communications. In the receiver, we propose to split the analog combining subsystem into a channel gain aggregation stage followed by a spreading stage. Both stages use phase shifters. Our goal is to design the two-stage analog combiner to optimize mutual information (MI) between the transmitted and quantized signals by effectively managing quantization error. To this end, we formulate an unconstra…
In this paper, we derive an optimal ADC bit-allocation (BA) condition for a Single-User (SU) Millimeter wave (mmWave) Massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (Ma-MIMO) receiver equipped with variable-resolution ADCs under power constraint with the following criteria: (i) Minimizing the Mean Squared Error (MSE) of the received, quantized and combined symbol vector and (ii) Maximizing the capacity of the SU mmWave Ma-MIMO channel encompassing hybrid precoder and combiner. Optimal BA under both criteria results the same. We jointly design the hybrid combiner based on the SVD of the channel. We dem…
We derive an expression for the capacity of massive multiple-input multiple-output Millimeter wave (mmWave) channel where the receiver is equipped with a variable-resolution Analog to Digital Converter (ADC) and a hybrid combiner. The capacity is shown to be a function of Cramer-Rao Lower Bound (CRLB) for a given bit-allocation matrix and hybrid combiner. The condition for optimal ADC bit-allocation under a receiver power constraint is derived. This is derived based on the maximization of capacity with respect to bit-allocation matrix for a given channel, hybrid precoder, and hybrid combiner. …
In this paper, we study the problem of physical layer security in the uplink of millimeter-wave massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) networks and propose a jamming detection and suppression method. The proposed method is based on directional information of the received signals at the base station antenna array. The proposed jamming detection method can accurately detect both the existence and direction of the jammer using the received pilot signals in the training phase. The obtained information is then exploited to develop a channel estimator that excludes the jammer's angular subspa…
This paper investigates dual-layer non-orthogonally superimposed transmissions for industrial internet of things (IoT) millimeter-wave communications. Essentially, the overlayer is a ubiquitous multicast signal devised to serve all the devices in coverage with a common message, i.e., critical control packet. The underlayer is a composite signal that consists of private unicast messages. Due to safety implications, it is critical that all devices can decode the multicast information. To ensure this requirement, we jointly optimize the hybrid precoder, analog combiners, power allocation, and fai…
Millimeter wave (mmWave) communication is one feasible solution for high data-rate applications like vehicular-to-everything communication and next generation cellular communication. Configuring mmWave links, which can be done through channel estimation or beam-selection, however, is a source of significant overhead. In this paper, we propose to use spatial information extracted at sub-6 GHz to help establish the mmWave link. First, we review the prior work on frequency dependent channel behavior and outline a simulation strategy to generate multi-band frequency dependent channels. Second, ass…
Large antenna arrays will be needed in future millimeter wave (mmWave) cellular networks, enabling a large number of different possible antenna architectures and multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) techniques. It is still unclear which MIMO technique is most desirable as a function of different network parameters. This paper, therefore, compares the coverage and rate performance of hybrid beamforming enabled multi-user (MU) MIMO and single-user spatial multiplexing (SM) with single-user analog beamforming (SU-BF). A stochastic geometry model for coverage and rate analysis is proposed for MU-…
Antenna arrays will be an important ingredient in millimeter wave (mmWave) cellular systems. A natural application of antenna arrays is simultaneous transmission to multiple users. Unfortunately, the hardware constraints in mmWave systems make it difficult to apply conventional lower frequency multiuser MIMO precoding techniques at mmWave. This paper develops low complexity hybrid analog/digital precoding for downlink multiuser mmWave systems. Hybrid precoding involves a combination of analog and digital processing that is inspired by the power consumption of complete radio frequency and mixed…
Exploiting channel sparsity at millimeter wave (mmWave) frequencies reduces the high training overhead associated with the channel estimation stage. Compressive sensing (CS) channel estimation techniques usually adopt the (overcomplete) wavelet/Fourier transform matrix as a sparsifying dictionary. This may not be the best choice when considering non-uniform arrays, antenna gain/phase errors, mutual coupling effects, etc. We propose two dictionary learning (DL) algorithms to learn the best sparsifying dictionaries for channel matrices from observations obtained with hybrid frequency-selective m…

Millimeter-wave (mmWave) communications plays an important role for future cellular networks because of the vast amount of spectrum available in the underutilized mmWave frequency bands. To overcome the huge free space omnidirectional path loss in those frequency bands, the deployment of a very large number of antenna elements at the base station is crucial. The complexity, power consumption and costs resulting from the large number of antenna elements can be reduced by limiting the number of RF chains. This leads to hybrid precoding and combining, which, in contrast to the traditional fully d…
We investigate uplink user scheduling for millimeter wave (mmWave) hybrid analog/digital beamforming systems with low-resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs). Deriving new scheduling criteria for the mmWave systems, we show that the channel structure in the beamspace, in addition to the channel magnitude and orthogonality, plays a key role in maximizing the achievable rates of scheduled users due to quantization error. The criteria show that to maximize the achievable rate for a given channel gain, the channels of the scheduled users need to have (1) as many propagation paths as possibl…
One of the key technologies for the future cellular networks is full duplex (FD)-enabled integrated access and backhaul (IAB) networks operating in the millimeter-wave (mmWave) frequencies. The main challenge in realizing FD-IAB networks is mitigating the impact of self-interference (SI) in the wideband mmWave frequencies. In this article, we first introduce the 3GPP IAB network architectures and wideband mmWave channel models. By utilizing the subarray-based hybrid precoding scheme at the FD-IAB node, multiuser interference is mitigated using zero-forcing at the transmitter, whereas the resid…
Millimeter wave (mmWave) is a practical solution to provide high data rate for the vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communications. This enables the future autonomous vehicles to exchange big data with the base stations (BSs) such as the velocity and the location to improve the awareness of the advanced driving assistance system (ADAS). In this context, we consider a single-cell multiuser doubly-selective system wherein the BS simultaneously serves multiple vehicles. To accomplish this requirement, the BS is implemented in hybrid architecture to support multiple spatial streams while the vehicles h…
Hybrid analog-digital architectures are considered as promising candidates for implementing millimeter wave (mmWave) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems since they enable a considerable reduction of the required number of costly radio frequency (RF) chains by moving some of the signal processing operations into the analog domain. However, the analog feed network, comprising RF dividers, combiners, phase shifters, and line connections, of hybrid MIMO architectures is not scalable due to its prohibitively high power consumption for large numbers of transmit antennas. Motivated …
Future multi-input multi-output (MIMO) wireless communications systems will use beamforming as a first-step towards realizing the capacity requirements necessitated by the exponential increase in data demands. The focus of this work is on beam alignment for time-division duplexing (TDD) systems, for which we propose a number of novel algorithms. These algorithms seek to obtain good estimates of the optimal beamformer/combiner pair (which are the dominant singular vectors of the channel matrix). They are motivated by the power method, an iterative algorithm to determine eigenvalues and eigenvec…
Although the benefits of precoding and combining of data signals are widely recognized, the potential of these techniques for pilot transmission is not fully understood. This is particularly relevant for multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) cellular systems using millimeter-wave (mmWave) communications, where multiple antennas will have to be used both at the transmitter and the receiver to overcome the severe path loss. In this paper, we characterize the gains of pilot precoding and combining in terms of channel estimation quality and achievable data rate. Specifically, we consi…

In multi-user millimeter wave (mmWave) multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) systems, hybrid precoding is a crucial task to lower the complexity and cost while achieving a sufficient sum-rate. Previous works on hybrid precoding were usually based on optimization or greedy approaches. These methods either provide higher complexity or have sub-optimum performance. Moreover, the performance of these methods mostly relies on the quality of the channel data. In this work, we propose a deep learning (DL) framework to improve the performance and provide less computation time as compared to convention…
In this work, we address the problem of channel estimation and precoding / combining for the so-called hybrid millimeter wave (mmWave) MIMO architecture. Our proposed channel estimation scheme exploits channel reciprocity in TDD MIMO systems, by using echoing, thereby allowing us to implement Krylov subspace methods in a fully distributed way. The latter results in estimating the right (resp. left) singular subspace of the channel at the transmitter (resp. receiver). Moreover, we also tackle the problem of subspace decomposition whereby the estimated right (resp. left) singular subspaces are a…
Channel estimation and precoding in hybrid analog-digital millimeter-wave (mmWave) MIMO systems is a fundamental problem that has yet to be addressed, before any of the promised gains can be harnessed. For that matter, we propose a method (based on the well-known Arnoldi iteration) exploiting channel reciprocity in TDD systems and the sparsity of the channel's eigenmodes, to estimate the right (resp. left) singular subspaces of the channel, at the BS (resp. MS). We first describe the algorithm in the context of conventional MIMO systems, and derive bounds on the estimation error in the presenc…
In this paper, we propose a hybrid analog-digital beamforming architecture with resolution-adaptive ADCs for millimeter wave (mmWave) receivers with large antenna arrays. We adopt array response vectors for the analog combiners and derive ADC bit-allocation (BA) solutions in closed form. The BA solutions reveal that the optimal number of ADC bits is logarithmically proportional to the RF chain's signal-to-noise ratio raised to the 1/3 power. Using the solutions, two proposed BA algorithms minimize the mean square quantization error of received analog signals under a total ADC power constraint.…
Hybrid analog/digital MIMO architectures were recently proposed as an alternative for fully-digitalprecoding in millimeter wave (mmWave) wireless communication systems. This is motivated by the possible reduction in the number of RF chains and analog-to-digital converters. In these architectures, the analog processing network is usually based on variable phase shifters. In this paper, we propose hybrid architectures based on switching networks to reduce the complexity and the power consumption of the structures based on phase shifters. We define a power consumption model and use it to evaluate…
