In the spirit of Marcus canonical stochastic differential equations, we study a similar notion of rough differential equations (RDEs), notably dropping the assumption of continuity prevalent in the rough path literature. A new metric is exhibited in which the solution map is a continuous function of the driving rough path and a so-called path function, which directly models the effect of the jump on the system. In a second part, we show that general multidimensional semimartingales admit canonically defined rough path lifts. An extension of Lépingle's BDG inequality to this setting is given, and in turn leads to a number of novel limit theorems for semimartingale driven differential equations, both in law and in probability, conveniently phrased via Kurtz-Protter's uniformly-controlled-variations (UCV) condition. A number of examples illustrate the scope of our results.
In this paper we solve real-valued rough differential equations (RDEs) reflected on an irregular boundary. The solution $Y$ is constructed as the limit of a sequence $(Y^n)_{n\in\mathbb{N}}$ of solutions to RDEs with unbounded drifts $(ψ_n)_{n\in\mathbb{N}}$. The penalisation $ψ_n$ increases with $n$. Along the way, we thus also provide an existence theorem and a Doss-Sussmann representation for RDEs with a drift growing at most linearly. In addition, a speed of convergence of the sequence of penalised paths to the reflected solution is obtained. \\ We finally use the penalisation method to pr…
Since the breakthrough in rough paths theory for stochastic ordinary differential equations (SDEs), there has been a strong interest in investigating the rough differential equation (RDE) approach and its numerous applications. Rough path techniques can stay closer to deterministic analytical methods and have the potential to transfer many pathwise ordinary differential equation (ODE) techniques more directly to a stochastic setting. However, there are few works that analyze dynamical properties of RDEs and connect the rough path / regularity structures, ODE and random dynamical systems approa…
We introduce a notion of rough paths on embedded submanifolds and demonstrate that this class of rough paths is natural. On the way we develop a notion of rough integration and an efficient and intrinsic theory of rough differential equations (RDEs) on manifolds. The theory of RDEs is then used to construct parallel translation along manifold valued rough paths. Finally, this framework is used to show there is a one to one correspondence between rough paths on a d-dimensional manifold and rough paths on d-dimensional Euclidean space. This last result is a rough path analogue of Cartan's develo…
We work with non-planar rooted trees which have a label set given by an arbitrary vector space $V$. By equipping $V$ with a complete locally convex topology, we show how a natural topology is induced on the tree algebra over $V$. In this context, we introduce the Grossman-Larson and Connes-Kreimer topological Hopf algebras over $V$, and prove that they form a dual pair in a certain sense. As an application we define the class of branched rough paths over a general Banach space, and propose a new definition of a solution to a rough differential equation (RDE) driven by one of these branched rou…
We establish a new scale of $p$-variation estimates for martingale paraproducts, martingale transforms, and Itô integrals, of relevance in rough paths theory, stochastic, and harmonic analysis. As an application, we introduce rough semimartingales, a common generalization of classical semimartingales and (controlled) rough paths, and their integration theory.
We consider controlled differential equations and give new estimates for higher order Euler schemes. Our proofs are inspired by recent work of A. M. Davie who considers first and second order schemes. In order to implement the general case we make systematic use of geodesic approximations in the free nilpotent group. As application, we can control moments of solutions to rough path differential equations (RDEs) driven by random rough paths with sufficient integrability and have a criteria for L^q - convergence in the Universal Limit Theorem. We also obtain Azencott type estimates and asymptoti…
The present paper is devoted to the study of sample paths of G-Brownian motion and stochastic differential equations (SDEs) driven by G-Brownian motion from the view of rough path theory. As the starting point, we show that quasi-surely, sample paths of G-Brownian motion can be enhanced to the second level in a canonical way so that they become geometric rough paths of roughness 2 < p < 3. This result enables us to introduce the notion of rough differential equations (RDEs) driven by G-Brownian motion in the pathwise sense under the general framework of rough paths. Next we establish the funda…
Integrability properties of (classical, linear, linear growth) rough differential equations (RDEs) are considered, the Jacobian of the RDE flow driven by Gaussian signals being a motivating example. We revisit and extend some recent ground-breaking work of Cass-Litterer-Lyons in this regard; as by-product, we obtain a user-friendly "transitivity property" of such integrability estimates. We also consider rough integrals; as a novel application, uniform Weibull tail estimates for a class of (random) rough integrals are obtained. A concrete example arises from the stochastic heat-equation, spati…
We develop the rough path counterpart of Itô stochastic integration and - differential equations driven by general semimartingales. This significantly enlarges the classes of (Itô / forward) stochastic differential equations treatable with pathwise methods. A number of applications are discussed.
Based on a dyadic approximation of Itô integrals, we show the existence of Itô càdlàg rough paths above general semimartingales, suitable Gaussian processes and non-negative typical price paths. Furthermore, Lyons-Victoir extension theorem for càdlàg paths is presented, stating that every càdlàg path of finite $p$-variation can be lifted to a rough path.
Calculus via regularizations and rough paths are two methods to approach stochastic integration and calculus close to pathwise calculus. The origin of rough paths theory is purely deterministic, calculus via regularization is based on deterministic techniques but there is still a probability in the background. The goal of this paper is to establish a connection between stochastically controlled-type processes, a concept reminiscent from rough paths theory, and the so-called weak Dirichlet processes. As a by-product, we present the connection between rough and Stratonovich integrals for c{à}dl{…
In this article we consider rough differential equations (RDEs) driven by non-geometric rough paths, using the concept of branched rough paths introduced in Gubinelli (2004). We first show that branched rough paths can equivalently be defined as $γ$-Hölder continuous paths in some Lie group, akin to geometric rough paths. We then show that every branched rough path can be encoded in a geometric rough path. More precisely, for every branched rough path $\mathbf{X}$ lying above a path $X$, there exists a geometric rough path $\bar{\mathbf{X}}$ lying above an extended path $\bar X$, such that $\b…
Optimal sample path properties of stochastic processes often involve generalized Hölder- or variation norms. Following a classical result of Taylor, the exact variation of Brownian motion is measured in terms of $ψ(x) \equiv $ $x^{2}/\log \log (1/x) $ near $0+$. Such $ψ$-variation results extend to classes of processes with values in abstract metric spaces. (No Gaussian or Markovian properties are assumed.) To establish integrability properties of the $ψ$-variation we turn to a large class of Gaussian rough paths (e.g. Brownian motion and Lévy's area viewed as a process in a Lie group) and pro…
We introduce a canonical method for transforming a discrete sequential data set into an associated rough path made up of lead-lag increments. In particular, by sampling a $d$-dimensional continuous semimartingale $X:[0,1] \rightarrow \mathbb{R}^d$ at a set of times $D=(t_i)$, we construct a piecewise linear, axis-directed process $X^D: [0,1] \rightarrow\mathbb{R}^{2d}$ comprised of a past and future component. We call such an object the Hoff process associated with the discrete data $\{X_{t}\}_{t_i\in D}$. The Hoff process can be lifted to its natural rough path enhancement and we consider the…

We consider rough stochastic volatility models where the variance process satisfies a stochastic Volterra equation with the fractional kernel, as in the rough Bergomi and the rough Heston model. In particular, the variance process is therefore not a Markov process or semimartingale, and has quite low Hölder-regularity. In practice, simulating such rough processes thus often results in high computational cost. To remedy this, we study approximations of stochastic Volterra equations using an $N$-dimensional diffusion process defined as solution to a system of ordinary stochastic differential equ…
The objective of this work is to compare several approaches to the process of renormalisation in the context of rough differential equations using the substitution bialgebra on rooted trees known from backward error analysis of $B$-series. For this purpose, we present a so-called arborification of the Hoffman--Ihara theory of quasi-shuffle algebra automorphisms. The latter are induced by formal power series, which can be seen to be special cases of the cointeraction of two Hopf algebra structures on rooted forests. In particular, the arborification of Hoffman's exponential map, which defines a…
The truncated variation, $TV^c$, is a fairly new concept introduced in [5]. Roughly speaking, given a càdlàg function $f$, its truncated variation is "the total variation which does not pay attention to small changes of $f$, below some threshold $c>0$". The very basic consequence of such approach is that contrary to the total variation, $TV^c$ is always finite. This is appealing to the stochastic analysis where so-far large classes of processes, like semimartingales or diffusions, could not be studied with the total variation. Recently in [6], another characterization of $TV^c$ was found. Name…
This paper concerns portfolio selection with multiple assets under rough covariance matrix. We investigate the continuous-time Markowitz mean-variance problem for a multivariate class of affine and quadratic Volterra models. In this incomplete non-Markovian and non-semimartingale market framework with unbounded random coefficients, the optimal portfolio strategy is expressed by means of a Riccati backward stochastic differential equation (BSDE). In the case of affine Volterra models, we derive explicit solutions to this BSDE in terms of multi-dimensional Riccati-Volterra equations. This framew…
In this paper, we introduce a new framework for parametrization schemes (PS) in GFD. Using the theory of controlled rough paths, we derive a class of rough geophysical fluid dynamics (RGFD) models as critical points of rough action functionals. These RGFD models characterize Lagrangian trajectories in fluid dynamics as geometric rough paths (GRP) on the manifold of diffeomorphic maps. Three constrained variational approaches are formulated for the derivation of these models. The first is the Clebsch formulation, in which the constraints are imposed as rough advection laws. The second is the Ha…
