In 2009, Brown gave a set of conditions which when satisfied imply that a Feynman integral evaluates to a multiple zeta value. One of these conditions is called reducibility, which loosely says there is an order of integration for the Feynman integral for which Brown's techniques will succeed. Reducibility can be abstracted away from the Feynman integral to just being a condition on two polynomials, the first and second Symanzik polynomials. These polynomials can be defined from graphs, and thus reducibility is a property of graphs. We prove that for a fixed number of external momenta and no masses, reducibility is graph minor closed, correcting the previously claimed proofs of this fact. A computational study of reducibility was undertaken by Bogner and Lüders who found that for graphs with $4$-on-shell momenta and no masses, $K_{4}$ with momenta on each vertex is a forbidden minor. We add to this and find that when we restrict to graphs with four on-shell external momenta the following graphs are forbidden minors: $K_{4}$ with momenta on each vertex, $W_{4}$ with external momenta on the rim vertices, $K_{2,4}$ with external momenta on the large side of the bipartition, and one other graph. We do not expect that these minors characterize reducibility, so instead we give structural characterizations of the graphs not containing subsets of these minors. We characterize graphs not containing a rooted $K_{4}$ or rooted $W_{4}$ minor, graphs not containing rooted $K_{4}$ or rooted $W_{4}$ or rooted $K_{2,4}$ minors, and also a characterization of graphs not containing all of the known forbidden minors. Some comments are made on graphs not containing $K_{3,4}$, $K_{6}$ or a graph related to Wagner's graph as a minor.
We look at a graph property called reducibility which is closely related to a condition developed by Brown to evaluate Feynman integrals. We show for graphs with a fixed number of external momenta, that reducibility with respect to both Symanzik polynomials is graph minor closed. We also survey the known forbidden minors and the known structural results. This gives some structural information on those Feynman diagrams which are reducible.
Let $a,b,c,d$ be four vertices in a graph $G$. A \emph{$K_4$-minor rooted} at $a,b,c,d$ consists of four pairwise-disjoint pairwise-adjacent connected subgraphs of $G$, respectively containing $a,b,c,d$. We characterise precisely when $G$ contains a $K_4$-minor rooted at $a,b,c,d$ by describing six classes of obstructions, which are the edge-maximal graphs containing no $K_4$-minor rooted at $a,b,c,d$. The following two special cases illustrate the full characterisation: (1) A 4-connected non-planar graph contains a $K_4$-minor rooted at $a,b,c,d$ for every choice of $a,b,c,d$. (2) A 3-connect…
It has been conjectured that if a finite graph has a vertex coloring such that the union of any two color classes induces a connected graph, then for every set $T$ of vertices containing exactly one member from each color class there exists a complete minor such that $T$ contains exactly one member from each branching set. Here we prove the statement for line graphs.
Dirac and Lovász independently characterized the $3$-connected graphs with no pair of vertex-disjoint cycles. Equivalently, they characterized all $3$-connected graphs with no prism-minors. In this paper, we completely characterize the $3$-connected graphs with an edge that is contained in the union of no pair of vertex-disjoint cycles. As applications, we answer the analogous questions for edge-disjoint cycles and for $4$-connected graphs and we completely characterize the $3$-connected graphs with no prism-minor using a specified edge.
Intuitively, a tangle of large order in a graph is a highly-connected part of the graph, and it is known that if a graph has a tangle of large order then it has a large grid minor. Here we show that for any k, if G has a tangle of large order and Z is a set of vertices of cardinality k that cannot be separated from the tangle by any separation of order less than k, then G has a large grid minor containing Z, in which the members of Z all belong to the outside of the grid. This is a lemma for use in a later paper.
Given graphs G and H with V(G) containing V(H), suppose that we have a u,v-path P_{uv} in G for each edge uv in H. There are obvious additional conditions that ensure that G contains H as a rooted subgraph, subdivision, or immersion; we seek conditions that ensure that G contains H as a rooted minor or minor. This naturally leads to studying sets of paths that form an H-immersion, with the additional property that paths that contain the same vertex must have a common endpoint. We say that $H$ is contractible if, whenever G contains such an H-immersion, G must also contain a rooted H-minor. We …

A (minimal) transversal of a partition is a set which contains exactly one element from each member of the partition and nothing else. A coloring of a graph is a partition of its vertex set into anticliques, that is, sets of pairwise nonadjacent vertices. We study the following problem: Given a transversal $T$ of a proper coloring $\mathfrak{C}$ of some graph $G$, is there a partition $\mathfrak{H}$ of a subset of $V(G)$ into connected sets such that $T$ is a transversal of $\mathfrak{H}$ and such that two sets of $\mathfrak{H}$ are adjacent if their corresponding vertices from $T$ are connect…

We prove local convergence results for the uniformly random, labelled or unlabelled, graphs from subcritical families. As an example special case, we prove Benjamini-Schramm convergence for the uniform random unlabelled tree. We introduce a compactification of the space of countable (connected) rooted graphs, and use it to generalise the notion of Benjamini-Schramm convergence in order to allow for vertices of infinite degree in the limit object.
We provide a complete structural characterization of $K_{2,4}$-minor-free graphs. The $3$-connected $K_{2,4}$-minor-free graphs consist of nine small graphs on at most eight vertices, together with a family of planar graphs that contains $K_4$ and, for each $n \ge 5$, $2n-8$ nonisomorphic graphs of order $n$. To describe the $2$-connected $K_{2,4}$-minor-free graphs we use $xy$-outerplanar graphs, graphs embeddable in the plane with a Hamilton $xy$-path so that all other edges lie on one side of this path. We show that, subject to an appropriate connectivity condition, $xy$-outerplanar graphs …
Hadwiger's famous coloring conjecture states that every $t$-chromatic graph contains a $K_t$-minor. Holroyd [Bull. London Math. Soc. 29, (1997), pp. 139--144] conjectured the following strengthening of Hadwiger's conjecture: If $G$ is a $t$-chromatic graph and $S \subseteq V(G)$ takes all colors in every $t$-coloring of $G$, then $G$ contains a $K_t$-minor rooted at $S$. We prove this conjecture in the first open case of $t=4$. Notably, our result also directly implies a stronger version of Hadwiger's conjecture for $5$-chromatic graphs as follows: Every $5$-chromatic graph contains a $K_5$-mi…

In this paper, we consider the notion of \emph{special treewidth}, recently introduced by Courcelle\cite{Courcelle2012}. In a special tree decomposition, for each vertex $v$ in a given graph, the bags containing $v$ form a rooted path. We show that the class of graphs of special treewidth at most two is closed under taking minors, and give the complete list of the six minor obstructions. As an intermediate result, we prove that every connected graph of special treewidth at most two can be constructed by arranging blocks of special treewidth at most two in a specific tree-like fashion. Inspired…
