The Long Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) will utilize a beamline located at Fermilab to provide and aim a neutrino beam of sufficient intensity and appropriate energy range toward the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) detectors, placed deep underground at the SURF Facility in Lead, South Dakota. The primary proton beam (60-120 GeV) will be extracted from the MI-10 section of Fermilab's Main Injector. Neutrinos will be produced when the protons interact with a solid target to produce mesons which will be subsequently focused by magnetic horns into a 194m long decay pipe where they decay into muons and neutrinos. The parameters of the facility were determined taking into account the physics goals, spatial and radiological constraints, and the experience gained by operating the NuMI facility at Fermilab. The Beamline facility is designed for initial operation at a proton-beam power of 1.2 MW, with the capability to support an upgrade to 2.4 MW. LBNF/DUNE obtained CD-1 approval in November 2015. We discuss here the design status and the associated challenges as well as the R&D and plans for improvements before baselining the facility.
The Long Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) project will build a beamline located at Fermilab to create and aim an intense neutrino beam of appropriate energy range toward the DUNE detectors at the SURF facility in Lead, South Dakota. Neutrino production starts in the Target Station, which consists of a solid target, magnetic focusing horns, and the associated sub-systems and shielding infrastructure. Protons hit the target producing mesons which are then focused by the horns into a helium-filled decay pipe where they decay into muons and neutrinos. The target and horns are encased in actively …
Fermilab has submitted two Snowmass whitepapers on a future 2.4~MW upgrade for DUNE/LBNF featuring a 2 GeV extension of the PIP-II linac and the construction of a new rapid-cycling-synchrotron. This paper summarizes the relationship between these two scenarios, emphasizing the commonalities and tracing the differences to their original design questions. In addition to a high-level summary of the two 2.4~MW upgrade scenarios, there is a brief discussion of staging, beamline capabilities, subsequent upgrades, and relevant R\&D. We are proposing a vigorous program to address various challenges as…
This volume of the LBNF/DUNE Conceptual Design Report cover the Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility for DUNE and describes the LBNF Project, which includes design and construction of the beamline at Fermilab, the conventional facilities at both Fermilab and SURF, and the cryostat and cryogenics infrastructure required for the DUNE far detector.
The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment and Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (DUNE-LBNF) are under development at Fermilab since early 2010s [1]. At present, the work is being performed towards a comprehensive review conducted by US Department of Energy (DOE)-the Critical Decision 2 (CD-2)-that is planned to take place in the middle of 2022. The primary scientific objectives of DUNE are to carry out a comprehensive investigation of neutrino oscillations to test CP violation in the lepton sector, determine the ordering of the neutrino masses, and to test the three-neutrino paradigm (electron, m…
The Long Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) will produce the worlds most intense neutrino beam. Three series connected magnetic horns will require 5kV, 300kA, 800$μ$s pulses at a rate of 0.7Hz to focus the beam. Fermilab has designed and built pulsed high current supplies for horns in the past. Pulsed currents of 205 kA for Neutrinos at Main Injector (NuMI - NOvA), focusing a 120 GeV beam, and 170 kA for Booster Neutrino Beam (BNB - MiniBooNE) for focusing an 8 GeV beam have been operational for about 18 years. While the magnetic horns are expected to be replaced, the LBNF horn power supply is …
The next generation of long-baseline experiments is being designed to make a substantial step in the precision of measurements of neutrino-oscillation probabilities. Two qualitatively different proposals, Hyper-K and LBNF, are being considered for approval. This document outlines the complimentarity between Hyper-K and LBNF.
We designed an optimized antimuon beamline with the simulation using G4beamline and TRANSPORT software packages for Heavy Ion Accelerator Project in South Korea. This research suggests the optimized muon beamline can transport $2.4\times10^{8}$ antimuons per second to a circle with a radius of 3 cm. In terms of muon rate, this is competitive with world leading muon beam facilities.
This contribution reports the design of the main components used to interconnect SRF cavities and superconducting focusing lenses in the SSR Cryomodule beamlines, developed in the framework of the PIP-II project at Fermilab. The focus of the present contribution is on the design and testing of the edge-welded bellows according to ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code. The activities performed to qualify the bellows to be assembled in cleanroom, for operation in high vacuum, cryogenic environments, and their characterization from magnetic standpoint, will also be presented.
CYRCé is a TR24 cyclotron installed at the Institut Pluridisciplinaire Hubert Curien (IPHC) of Strasbourg operating at energies of 16-25 MeV and at intensities up to 400 $μ$A. The accelerator is used to produce and provide radioelements for PET and for SPECT. In 2015, IPHC started to develop a platform with the aim of performing radiobiological experiments. The PRECy platform foresees to contain three-to-five experimental stations linked to beamlines expanded from the second exit port of the cyclotron. This extension allows devoting one of the beamlines for detector studies within the framewor…
We are proposing a facility based on high gradient acceleration via x-band RF structures and plasma acceleration. We plan to reach an electron energy of the order of 1 GeV, suitable to drive a Free Electron Laser for applications in the so called "water window" (2 - 4 nm). A conceptual design of the beamline, from the photon beam from the undulators to the user experimental chamber, mainly focusing on diagnostic, manipulation and transport of the radiation is presented and discussed. We also briefly outline a user end station for coherent imaging, laser ablation and pump-probe experiments.
In this paper we present the design of a straight drift-quadrupole system which can transport certain beam ellipses (apochromatic beam ellipses) without influence of the second and of the third order chromatic and geometric aberrations of the beamline transfer map.

The facility will aim a wide band beam of neutrinos toward a detector placed at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in South Dakota, about 1,300 km away. The main elements of the facility are a primary proton beamline and a neutrino beamline. The primary proton beam (60 -120 GeV) will be extracted from the MI-10 section of Fermilab's Main Injector. Neutrinos are produced after the protons hit a solid target and produce mesons wh…

We describe a future possible upgrade of the European XFEL consisting in the construction of an undulator beamline dedicated to life science experiments. The availability of free undulator tunnels at the European XFEL facility offers a unique opportunity to build a beamline optimized for coherent diffraction imaging of complex molecules, like proteins and other biologically interesting structures. Crucial parameters for such bio-imaging beamline are photon energy range, peak power, and pulse duration. Key component of the setup is the undulator source. The peak power is maximized in the photon…
The LUX beamline is a novel type of laser-plasma accelerator. Building on the joint expertise of the University of Hamburg and DESY the beamline was carefully designed to combine state-of-the-art expertise in laser-plasma acceleration with the latest advances in accelerator technology and beam diagnostics. LUX introduces a paradigm change moving from single-shot demonstration experiments towards available, stable and controllable accelerator operation. Here, we discuss the general design concepts of LUX and present first critical milestones that have recently been achieved, including the gener…
The KAHVE Laboratory, at Boğaziçi University, Istanbul, Turkey is home to an educational proton linac project. The proton beam will originate from a 20 keV H+ source and will be delivered to a two module Radio Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ) operating at 800 MHz via a low energy beam transport (LEBT) line. Currently, the design phase being over, commissioning and stability tests are ongoing for the proton beamline which is already produced and installed except the RFQ which is being manufactured. This work summarizes the design, production and test phases of the ion source and LEBT line components.
A new experimental area designed to develop, test and verify muon ionization cooling apparatus using the 400-MeV Fermilab Linac proton beam has been fully installed and is presently being commissioned. Initially, this area was used for cryogenic tests of liquid-hydrogen absorbers for the MUCOOL R&D program and, now, for high-power beam tests of absorbers, high-gradient rf cavities in the presence of magnetic fields (including gas-filled cavities), and other prototype muon-cooling apparatus. The experimental scenarios being developed for muon facilities involve collection, capture, and cooling …
Fermilab carries out an extensive program of accelerator-based high energy particle physics research at the Intensity Frontier that relies on the operation of 8 GeV and 120 GeV proton beamlines for a number of fixed target experiments. Routine operation with a world-record 700kW of average 120 GeV beam power on the neutrino target was achieved in 2017 as the result of the Proton Improvement Plan (PIP) upgrade. There are plans to further increase the power to 900 - 1000 kW. The next major upgrade of the FNAL accelerator complex, called PIP-II, is under development. It aims at 1.2MW beam power o…
In the post-Nova era, the protons are directly transported from the Booster ring to the Recycler ring rather than the Main Injector. For Mu2e and g-2 project, the Debuncher ring will be modified into a Delivery ring to deliver the protons to both Mu2e and g-2 experiemnts. Therefore, It requires the transport of protons from the Recycler Ring to the Delivery ring. A new transfer line from the Recycler ring to the P1 beamline will be constructed to transport proton beam from the Recycler Ring to existing Antiproton Source beamlines. This new beamline provides a way to deliver 8 GeV kinetic energ…
The NOνA Experiment will construct a detector optimized for electron neutrino detection in the existing Neutrino at Main Injector (NuMI) beamline. This beamline is capable of operating at 400 kW of primary beam power and the upgrade will allow up to 700 kW. The cavities will operate at 53 MHz and three of them will be installed in the Recycler beamline. Thermal stability of the cavities is crucial since this affects the tuning. Results of finite element thermal and structural analysis involving the copper RF cavity will be presented.
The High-Energy Beam Transport system of GSI Campus is a complex system of interconnected beamlines between SIS18 synchrotron and multiple experimental stations and storage rings. This system is designed to be flexible and each experimental station can be reached by several beam paths. The quadrupole settings must fulfill constraints due to the beamline acceptance, limitations of the installed magnets and experimental requirements. The number of degrees of freedom is large and leaves operators with a vast number of possible optics configurations. The choice of a particular configuration is oft…
Diagnostic X (D-X) transport system would extract the beam from the downstream transport line of the second- axis of the Dual Axis Radiographic Hydrodynamic Test facility (DARHT-II) and transport this beam to the D-X firing point via four branches of the beamline in order to provide four lines of sight for x-ray radiography. The design goal is to generate four DARHT-II-like x-ray pulses on each line of sight. In this paper, we discuss several potential beam quality degradation processes in the passive magnet lattice beamline and indicate how they constrain the D-X beamline design parameters, s…
The Long Baseline Neutrino Experiment (LBNE) will utilize a neutrino beamline facility located at Fermilab to carry out a compelling research program in neutrino physics. The facility will aim a beam of neutrinos toward a detector placed at the Homestake Mine in South Dakota, about 1300 km away. The neutrinos are produced as follows: First, protons extracted from the MI-10 section of the Main Injector (60-120 GeV) hit a solid target above grade and produce mesons. Then, the charged mesons are focused by a set of focusing horns into a 250 m long decay pipe, towards the far detector. Finally, th…
The Extreme Light Infrastructure (ELI) Beamlines is a laser driven accelerator facility located in the outskirts of the city of Prague. With its state-of-the-art lasers, it will carry out an ambitious and diverse research program. Activities at ELI Beamlines can be broken down in complementary areas of scientific interest: development and testing of novel technologies for multi-PW laser systems, plasma physics, high field physics experiments, production of femtosecond secondary sources of ionizing radiation (extreme ultraviolet radiation, X rays, gamma, electrons, and protons)to be used in int…
The design and production studies of the proton beamline of SPP, which aims to acquire know-how on proton accelerator technology thru development of man power and serves as particle accelerator technologies test bench, continue at TAEK-SANAEM as a multi-phase project. For the first phase, 20 keV protons will be accelerated to 1.3 MeV by a single piece RFQ. Currently, the beam current and stability tests are ongoing for the Inductively Coupled Plasma ion source. The measured magnetic field maps of the Low Energy Beam Transport solenoids are being used for matching various beam configurations of…
The $μ$E4-LEM beamline at Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI, Switzerland) is a special muon beamline combining the hyprid type surface muon beamline $μ$E4 with the low energy muon facility (LEM) and delivers $μ^{+}$ with tunable energy up to 30 keV for low-energy muon spin rotation experiments (LE-$μ$SR). We investigate a possible upgrade scenario for the surface muon beamline $μ$E4 by replacing the last set of quadrupole triplet with a special solenoid to obtain 1.4 times original beam intensity on the LEM muon moderator target. In order to avoid the muon beam intensity loss at the LEM spectromete…
We recently proposed a basic concept for design and layout of the undulator source for a dedicated bio-imaging beamline at the European XFEL. The goal of the optimized scheme proposed here is to enable experimental simplification and performance improvement. The core of the scheme is composed by soft and hard X-ray self-seeding setups. Based on the use of an improved design for both monochromators it is possible to increase the design electron energy up to 17.5 GeV in photon energy range between 2 keV and 13 keV, which is the most preferable for life science experiments. An advantage of operat…
To realize and test advanced accelerator concepts and hardware, a beamline is being reconfigured in the Linac Extension Area (LEA) of APS linac. A photo-cathode RF gun installed at the beginning of the APS linac will provide a low emittance electron beam into the LEA beamline. The thermionic RF gun beam for the APS storage ring, and the photo-cathode RF gun beam for LEA beamline will be accelerated through the linac in an interleaved fashion. In this paper, the design studies for interleaving lattice realization in APS linac is described with initial experiment result
The Advanced Wakefield (AWAKE) Experiment is a proof-of-principle experiment demonstrating the acceleration of electron beams via proton-driven plasma wakefield acceleration. AWAKE Run 1 achieved acceleration of electron beams to 2 GeV and the intention for Run 2 is to build on these results by achieving acceleration to ~10 GeV with a higher beam quality. As part of the upgrade to Run 2, the existing proton and electron beamlines will be adapted and a second plasma cell and new 150 MeV electron beamline will be added. This new beamline will be required to inject electron bunches with micron-le…

We describe the Fundamental Neutron Physics Beamline (FnPB) facility located at the Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The FnPB was designed for the conduct of experiments that investigate scientific issues in nuclear physics, particle physics, astrophysics and cosmology using a pulsed slow neutron beam. We present a detailed description of the design philosophy, beamline components, and measured fluxes of the polychromatic and monochromatic beams.
The MTA beam line has been specifically designed to facilitate measurements of the Fermilab Linac beam emittance and properties utilizing a long, 10m, element-free straight. Linac beam is extracted downstream of the 400-MeV electrostatic chopper located in the Booster injection line. This chopper cannot be utilized for MTA beam, and therefore the entire Linac beam pulse is directed into the MTA beamline. Pulse length manipulation is provided by the 750-keV electrostatic chopper at the upstream end of the Linac and, using this device, beam can be delivered from 8 μsec up to the full 50 μsec Lin…
The behavior of orbits in charged-particle beam transport systems, including both linear and circular accelerators as well as final focus sections and spectrometers, can depend sensitively on nonlinear fringe-field and high-order-multipole effects in the various beam-line elements. The inclusion of these effects requires a detailed and realistic model of the interior and fringe fields, including their high spatial derivatives. A collection of surface fitting methods has been developed for extracting this information accurately from 3-dimensional field data on a grid, as provided by various 3-d…
Project-X is the proposed high intensity proton facility to be built at Fermilab, US. First stage of the Project-X consists of superconducting linac which will be operated in continuous wave (CW) mode to accelerate the beam from 2.5 MeV to 3 GeV. The operation at CW mode puts high tolerances on the beam line components, particularly on radiofrequency (RF) cavity. The failure of beam line elements at low energy is very critical as it results in mis-match of the beam with the following sections due to different beam parameters than designed parameter. It makes the beam unstable which causes emit…
The Linac to End Station A (LESA) beamline is being constructed at SLAC and will provide a near-CW beam of multi-GeV electrons to the SLAC End Station A for experiments in particle physics. The 1st half of LESA is ready for commissioning at the end of FY22 and the full beamline will be operational Q1 FY24. The low-current multi-GeV electron beam is produced parasitically by the superconducting RF (SRF) linac for the LCLS-II/LCLS-II-HE X-ray Free Electron Laser. LESA is designed to host experiments to detect light dark matter such as the Light Dark Matter eXperiment (LDMX) as well as a wide ran…
The SASE3 soft X-ray beamline at the European XFEL has been designed and built to provide experiments with pink or monochromatic beam in the photon energy range 250 eV - 3000 eV. Here, we focus on the monochromatic operation of the SASE3 beamline and report on design and performance of the SASE3 grating monochromator. The unique capability of an FEL source to produce short femtosecond pulses of high degree of coherence challenges the monochromator design by a demand to control both photon energy and temporal resolution. The aim to transport close to transform-limited pulses poses very high dem…
The Proton Improvement Plan-II (PIP-II) [1] has been developed at Fermilab to provide powerful proton beams to the laboratorys experiments. An 800-MeV superconducting linear accelerator-a centerpiece of the project-is currently under construction in Batavia, Illinois (USA). After completion, the superconducting linac will be the starting point for the 1.2 MW (Phase 1) and 2.4-MW (Phase 2) proton beam that is needed for the Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) at Fermilab [2]. Due to unavoidable loss of a fraction of the beam in the accelerator components, a certain level of radiation will be…
This paper describes simulation analyses on beam and laser (X-ray)-driven accelerations in effective nanotube models obtained from Vsim and EPOCH codes. Experimental setups to detect wakefields are also outlined with accelerator facilities at Fermilab and NIU. In the FAST facility, the electron beamline was successfully commissioned at 50 MeV and it is being upgraded toward higher energies for electron accelerator R&D. The 50 MeV injector beamline of the facility is used for X-ray crystal-channeling radiation with a diamond target. It has been proposed to utilize the same diamond crystal for a…
Active discussion on the high energy physics priorities in the US carried out since summer of 2013 resulted in changes in Fermilab plans for future development of the existing accelerator complex. In particular, the scope of Project X was reduced to the support of the Long Base Neutrino Facility (LBNF) at the project first stage. The name of the facility was changed to the PIP-II (Proton Improvement Plan). This new facility is a logical extension of the existing Proton Improvement Plan aimed at doubling average power of the Fermilab's Booster and Main Injector (MI). Its design and required R&D…
The resonant scattering and diffraction beamline P09 at PETRA III is designed for X-ray experiments requiring small beams, energy tunability, variable polarization and high photon flux. It is highly flexible in terms of beam size and offers full higher harmonic suppression. A state of the art double phase retarder setup provides variable linear or circular polarization. A high precision Psi-diffractometer and a heavy load diffractometer in horizontal Psi-geometry allow the accommodation of a wide variety of sample environments. A 14 T cryo-magnet is available for scattering experiments in magn…
The Long Baseline Neutrino Experiment (LBNE) will utilize a neutrino beamline facility located at Fermilab to carry out a compelling research program in neutrino physics. The facility will aim a beam of neutrinos toward a detector placed at the Homestake Mine in South Dakota. The neutrinos are produced in a three-step process. First, protons from the Main Injector (60-120 GeV) hit a solid target and produce mesons. Then, the charged mesons are focused by a set of focusing horns into the decay pipe, towards the far detector. Finally, the mesons that enter the decay pipe decay into neutrinos. Th…
The Fermilab accelerator complex delivers intense high-energy proton beams to a variety of fixed-target scientific programs, including a flagship long-baseline neutrino program. With the advent of the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) and Long Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) program there is strong motivation for a 2.4 MW beam power upgrade of the Fermilab proton facility. We show the Fermilab proton facility can achieve 2.4~MW with a new rapid-cycling synchrotron (RCS) to replace the Fermilab Booster and we provide a comprehensive technical analysis of the RCS-based facility desig…
We report the laser-plasma accelerator-based X-ray sources development at ELI beamlines. One of the main objectives of ELI Beamlines is to provide beams of ultrashort particle and complex X-ray sources to users from various research fields. Two hard X-ray betatron sources with high photon flux based on laser-plasma acceleration (LPA) are being commissioned. The first source is the Gammatron beamline located in Experimental Hall E2. It provides X-ray pulses of energies from 1-100 keV in betatron and up to a MeV in Compton scheme. A novel X-ray optics has been designed as a focusing optics of th…
We propose a physical design of a compact all optical terahertz (THz)-driven electron source. The 300 mm accelerator beamline, powered by Joule level laser system, is easily to be integrated to tabletop scale. A dual-feed THz-driven electron gun with an exponential impedance, a tapered dielectric loaded cylindrical waveguide, THz-driven bunch compressors and permanent magnet solenoids (PMS) have been designed and optimized. Dynamics simulations show that the electron source can deliver a 19 fC, 3 MeV electron beams with a normalized transverse emittance of 0.079 π.mm.mrad. A minimum relative e…
In this paper we analyze the image formation problem for undulator radiation through an optical system, accounting for the influence of the electron beam emittance. On the one hand, image formation with Synchrotron Radiation is governed by the laws of Statistical Optics. On the other hand, the widely used Gaussian-Shell model cannot be applied to describe the coherence properties of X-ray beams from third generation Synchrotron Radiation sources. As a result, a more rigorous analysis of coherence properties is required. We propose a technique to explicitly calculate the cross-spectral density …
