We study two dispersive regimes in the dynamics of $N$ two-level atoms interacting with a bosonic mode for long interaction times. Firstly, we analyze the dispersive multiqubit quantum Rabi model for the regime in which the qubit frequencies are equal and smaller than the mode frequency, and for values of the coupling strength similar or larger than the mode frequency, namely, the deep strong coupling regime. Secondly, we address an interaction that is dependent on the photon number, where the coupling strength is comparable to the geometric mean of the qubit and mode frequencies. We show that the associated dynamics is analytically tractable and provide useful frameworks with which to analyze the system behavior. In the deep strong coupling regime, we unveil the structure of unexpected resonances for specific values of the coupling, present for $N\ge2$, and in the photon-number-dependent regime we demonstrate that all the nontrivial dynamical behavior occurs in the atomic degrees of freedom for a given Fock state. We verify these assertions with numerical simulations of the qubit population and photon-statistic dynamics.
We present a scheme to generate steady-state atomic spin squeezing in a cavity QED system using cavity-mediated Raman transitions to engineer effective atom-photon interactions, which include both linear and nonlinear (dispersive) atom-cavity couplings, on a potentially equal footing. We focus on a regime where the dispersive coupling is very large and find that the steady state of the system can in fact be a strongly spin-squeezed Dicke state, $|N/2,0\rangle$, of the atomic ensemble. These states offer Heisenberg-limited metrological properties and feature genuine multipartite entanglement am…
We show that in the strong coupling linear regime, the dispersive opto-mechanical Hamiltonian system can undergo a Dicke-Hepp-Lieb superradiant phase transition with two critical points. The higher critical point is the usual second order Dicke superradiant phase transition while the lower critical point is a new effect showing similarity to the usual Dicke superradiance. We also show that the mechanical mode near its quantum ground state completely decouples from the optical mode and the optical mode shows similarity to the Bogoluibov like excitations.
We investigate the dynamical properties of the finite-size Dicke model coupled to a photon reservoir in the dispersive regime. The system-reservoir coupling in our Hamiltonian includes counter-rotating terms, which are relevant in the strong atom-cavity coupling. Because the dispersive regime is considered, the dynamics of low-energy states are described sufficiently accurately within the finite-dimensional subspace of the dressed states. Using the separation of the time scales between the system and the reservoir, we derive the Markovian quantum master equation in the subspace without ignorin…

We propose the analog quantum simulation of generalized Dicke models in trapped ions. By combining bicromatic laser interactions on multiple ions we can generate all regimes of light-matter coupling in these models, where here the light mode is mimicked by a motional mode. We present numerical simulations of the three-qubit Dicke model both in the weak field (WF) regime, where the Jaynes-Cummings behaviour arises, and the ultrastrong coupling (USC) regime, where rotating-wave approximation (RWA) cannot be considered. We also simulate the two-qubit biased Dicke model in the WF and USC regimes a…
We realize an open version of the Dicke model by coupling two hyperfine ground states using two cavity-assisted Raman transitions. The interaction due to only one of the couplings is described by the Tavis-Cummings model and we observe a normal mode splitting in the transmission around the dispersively shifted cavity. With both couplings present the dynamics are described by the Dicke model and we measure the onset of superradiant scattering into the cavity above a critical coupling strength.
We consider the nonstationary circuit QED architecture in which a single-mode cavity interacts with N>1 identical qubits, and some system parameters undergo a weak external perturbation. It is shown that in the dispersive regime one can engineer the two-photon exchange interaction by adjusting the frequency of harmonic modulation to (approximately) $2|Δ_{-}|$, where $Δ_{-}$ is the average atom--field detuning. Closed analytic description is derived for the weak atom-field coupling regime, and numeric simulations indicate that the phenomenon can be observed in the present setups.
The controllability of current quantum technologies allows to implement spin-boson models where two-photon couplings are the dominating terms of light-matter interaction. In this case, when the coupling strength becomes comparable with the characteristic frequencies, a spectral collapse can take place, i.e. the discrete system spectrum can collapse into a continuous band. Here, we analyze the thermodynamic limit of the two-photon Dicke model, which describes the interaction of an ensemble of qubits with a single bosonic mode. We find that there exists a parameter regime where two-photon intera…
We present a new generalized Dicke model, an impurity-doped Dicke model (IDDM), by the use of an impurity-doped cavity-Bose-Einstein condensate. It is shown that the impurity atom can induce Dicke quantum phase transition (QPT) from the normal phase to superradiant phase at a critic value of the impurity population. It is found that the IDDM exhibits continuous Dicke QPT with an infinite number of critical points, which is significantly different from that observed in the standard Dicke model with only one critical point. It is revealed that the impurity-induced Dicke QPT can happen in an arbi…
The Rabi Hamiltonian is studied in the dispersive regime and ultra-strong coupling. We employ a recent unitary transformation to obtain not only the approximate Hamiltonian and its energy levels but also its eigenfunctions. The relationship of the approximation with other regimes and their approximations are also discussed.
We present a robust quantum optimal control framework for implementing fast entangling gates on ion-trap quantum processors. The framework leverages tailored laser pulses to drive the multiple vibrational sidebands of the ions to create phonon-mediated entangling gates and, unlike the state of the art, requires neither weak-coupling Lamb-Dicke approximation nor perturbation treatment. With the application of gradient-based optimal control, it enables finding amplitude- and phase-modulated laser control protocols that work beyond the Lamb-Dicke regime, promising gate speed at the order of micro…
Cavity-mediated cooling has the potential to become one of the most efficient techniques to cool molecular species down to very low temperatures. In this paper we analyse cavity cooling with single-laser driving for relatively large cavity decay rates kappa and relatively large phonon frequencies nu. It is shown that cavity cooling and ordinary laser cooling are essentially the same within the validity range of the Lamb-Dicke approximation. This is done by deriving a closed set of rate equations and calculating the corresponding stationary state phonon number and cooling rate. For example, whe…
Using a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian approach to open systems, we study the interplay of disorder and superradiance in a one- and three-dimensional Anderson model. Analyzing the complex eigenvalues of the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian, a transition to a superradiant regime is shown to occur. As an effect of openness the structure of eigenstates undergoes a strong change in the superradiant regime: we show that the sensitivity to disorder of the superradiant and the subradiant subspaces is very different; superradiant states remain delocalized as disorder increases, while subradiant states are sensiti…
We demonstrate enhancement of the dispersive frequency shift in a coplanar waveguide resonator induced by a capacitively-coupled superconducting flux qubit in the straddling regime. The magnitude of the observed shift, 80 MHz for the qubit-resonator detuning of 5 GHz, is quantitatively explained by the generalized Jaynes-Cummings model which takes into account the contribution of the qubit higher energy levels. By applying the enhanced dispersive shift to the qubit readout, we achieved 90% contrast of the Rabi oscillations which is mainly limited by the energy relaxation of the qubit.
We report the experimental observation of superradiant emission emanating from an elongated dense ensemble of laser cooled two-level atoms, with a radial extent smaller than the transition wavelength. In the presence of a strong driving laser, we observe that the system is superradiant along its symmmetry axis. This occurs even though the driving laser is orthogonal to the superradiance direction. This superradiance modifies the spontaneous emission, and, resultantly, the Rabi oscillations. We also investigate Dicke superradiance in the emission of an almost fully-inverted system as a function…
We report continuous Raman sideband cooling (CRSC) of a long ion chain to the motional ground state beyond the Lamb-Dicke (LD) regime. By driving multiple sideband transitions simultaneously, we show that nearly all axial modes of a 24-ion chain are cooled to the ground state, with an LD parameter as large as $η= 1.3$, spanning a frequency bandwidth of 4 MHz. Compared to traditional ground-state cooling methods such as pulsed sideband cooling or electromagnetic-induced-transparency (EIT) cooling, our method offers two key advantages: robustness to timing errors; and an ultra-wide bandwidth unl…
We give an analytical description of the dynamics of the three-qubit Dicke model using the adiabatic approximation in the parameter regime where the qubits transition frequencies are far off-resonance with the field frequency and the interaction strengths reach the ultra-strong coupling regimes. Qualitative differences arise when comparing to the single- and two-qubit systems - simple analytic formulas show that three revival sequences produce a three-frequency beat note in the time evolution of the population. We find an explicit way to estimate the dynamics for the qubit-field and qubit-qubi…
We present the results of simulations of optical sideband cooling of atomic ions in a trap with a shallow potential well. In such traps, an ion cannot be Doppler cooled near to the Lamb-Dicke regime ($η^2(2n+1) \ll 1$). Outside the Lamb-Dicke regime, the sideband cooling dynamics are altered by the existence of various Fock states where the cooling becomes very slow. A calcium ion trapped in our Penning trap realises such a situation, hence single stage cooling is inefficient to prepare the ion in the motional ground state. For these systems, it is necessary to study the cooling dynamics in de…
We follow the passage from complex amplitude bistability to phase bistability in the driven dissipative Jaynes-Cummings oscillator. Quasidistribution functions in the steady state are employed, for varying qubit-cavity detuning and drive parameters, in order to track a first-order dissipative quantum phase transition up to the critical point marking a second-order transition and spontaneous symmetry breaking. We demonstrate the photon blockade breakdown in the dispersive regime, and find that the coexistence of cavity states in the regime of quantum bistability is accompanied by pronounced qub…
We present a proposal for a probing scheme utilizing Dicke superradiance to obtain information about ultracold atoms in optical lattices. A probe photon is absorbed collectively by an ensemble of lattice atoms generating a Dicke state. The lattice dynamics (e.g., tunneling) affects the coherence properties of that Dicke state and thus alters the superradiant emission characteristics -- which in turn provides insight into the lattice (dynamics). Comparing the Bose-Hubbard and the Fermi-Hubbard model, we find similar superradiance in the strongly interacting Mott insulator regime, but crucial di…
We show that a collection of two-level atoms in an optical cavity beyond the rotating wave approximation and in the dispersive and strong-coupling regime constitutes a nonlinear medium and is capable of generating squeezed state of light. It is found that squeezing produced in the strong-coupling regime is significantly higher compared to that produced in the dispersive limit. On the other hand, we also show that it could be possible to observe the Dicke superradiant quantum phase transition in the dispersive regime where the vector potential term is negligible. Such a system can be an essenti…
The Dicke model, which describes the dipolar coupling between N two-level atoms and a quantized electromagnetic field, seemingly violates gauge invariance in the presence of ultrastrong light-matter coupling, a regime that is now experimentally accessible in many physical systems. Specifically, it has been shown that, while the two-level approximation can work well in the dipole gauge, the Coulomb gauge fails to provide the correct spectra in the ultrastrong coupling regime. Here we show that, taking into account the nonlocality of the atomic potential induced by the two-level approximation, g…
We propose a digital-analog quantum simulation of generalized Dicke models with superconducting circuits, including Fermi-Bose condensates, biased and pulsed Dicke models, for all regimes of light-matter coupling. We encode these classes of problems in a set of superconducting qubits coupled with a bosonic mode implemented by a transmission line resonator. Via digital-analog techniques, an efficient quantum simulation can be performed in state-of-the-art circuit quantum electrodynamics platforms, by suitable decomposition into analog qubit-bosonic blocks and collective single-qubit pulses thro…
Superconducting circuits consisting of a few low-anharmonic transmons coupled to readout and bus resonators can perform basic quantum computations. Since the number of qubits in such circuits is limited to not more than a few tens, the qubits can be designed to operate within the dispersive regime, where frequency detuning are much stronger than coupling strengths. However, scaling up the number of qubits will bring the circuit out of this regime and invalidates current theories. We develop a formalism that allows to consistently diagonalize superconducting circuit hamiltonian beyond dispersiv…
In circuit QED, protocols for quantum gates and readout of superconducting qubits often rely on the dispersive regime, reached when the qubit-photon detuning Δ is large compared to their mutual coupling strength. For qubits including the Cooper-pair box and transmon, selection rules dramatically restrict the contributions to dispersive level shifts χ. By contrast, without selection rules many virtual transitions contribute to χ and can produce sizable dispersive shifts even at large detuning. We present theory for a generic multi-level qudit capacitively coupled to one or multiple harmonic mod…
We study a simple model describing superradiance in a system of two-level atoms interacting with a single-mode bosonic field. The model permits a continuous crossover between integrable and partially chaotic regimes and shows a complex thermodynamic and quantum phase structure. Several types of excited-state quantum phase transitions separate quantum phases that are characterized by specific energy dependences of various observables and by different atom-field and atom-atom entanglement properties. We observe an approximate revival of some states from the weak atom-field coupling limit in the …
Hybrid photonic-plasmonic nanostructures allow one to engineer coupling of quantum emitters and cavity modes accounting for the direct coherent and environment mediated dissipative pathways. Using generalized plasmonic Dicke model, we explore the non-equilibrium phase diagram with respect to these interactions. The analysis shows that their interplay results in the extension of the superradiant and regular lasing states to the dissipative coupling regime and an emergent lasing phase without population inversion having boundary with the superradiant and normal states. Calculated photon emission…
We study the quantum quench dynamics in an extended version of the Dicke model where an additional parameter allows a smooth transition to the integrable Tavis-Cummings regime. We focus on the influence of various quantum phases and excited-state quantum phase transitions (ESQPTs) on the survival probability of the initial state. We show that, depending on the quench protocol, an ESQPT can either stabilize the initial state or, on the contrary, speed up its decay to the equilibrated regime. Quantum chaos smears out the manifestations of ESQPTs in quench dynamics, therefore significant effects …
In a view of recent proposals for the realization of anisotropic light-matter interaction in such platforms as (i) non-stationary or inductively and capacitively coupled superconducting qubits, (ii) atoms in crossed fields and (iii) semiconductor heterostructures with spin-orbital interaction, the concept of generalized Dicke model, where coupling strengths of rotating wave and counter-rotating wave terms are unequal, has attracted great interest. For this model, we study photon fluctuations in the critical region of normal-to-superradiant phase transition when both the temperatures and number…
We present two pulse schemes for actively depleting measurement photons from a readout resonator in the nonlinear dispersive regime of circuit QED. One method uses digital feedback conditioned on the measurement outcome while the other is unconditional. In the absence of analytic forms and symmetries to exploit in this nonlinear regime, the depletion pulses are numerically optimized using the Powell method. We shorten the photon depletion time by more than six inverse resonator linewidths compared to passive depletion by waiting. We quantify the benefit by emulating an ancilla qubit performing…
We study the emission spectrum of a qubit under deep strong driving in the high-frequency dispersive regime when the driving frequency and strength exceed significantly the qubit transition frequency. Closed-form expressions for the steady-state first-order field correlation function and the multiphoton emission spectrum are obtained. The spectrum comprises a series of narrow delta-like lines that stem from coherent processes and Lorenzian peaks that result from the incoherent scattering of photons. The oscillating dependence of the widths of the emission lines on the driving strength is predi…
The quantum dynamics of initial coherent states is studied in the Dicke model and correlated with the dynamics, regular or chaotic, of their classical limit. Analytical expressions for the survival probability, i.e. the probability of finding the system in its initial state at time $t$, are provided in the regular regions of the model. The results for regular regimes are compared with those of the chaotic ones. It is found that initial coherent states in regular regions have a much longer equilibration time than those located in chaotic regions. The properties of the distributions for the init…
We present a protocol to generate a large degree of squeezing of a boson (light) field mode strongly coupled to a two-level system in the dispersive regime. Our protocol exploits the strong dispersive coupling to introduce a time dependent frequency change of the boson field. With an appropriately timed sequence of sudden frequency changes, the quantum noise fluctuations in one quadrature of the field can be reduced well below the standard quantum limit, with a correspondingly increased uncertainty in the orthogonal quadrature. Even in the presence of realistic noise and imperfections, the pro…
We generalize the dispersive theory of the Jaynes-Cummings model beyond the frequently employed rotating-wave approximation (RWA) in the coupling between the two-level system and the resonator. For a detuning sufficiently larger than the qubit-oscillator coupling, we diagonalize the non-RWA Hamiltonian and discuss the differences to the known RWA results. Our results extend the regime in which dispersive qubit readout is possible. If several qubits are coupled to one resonator, an effective qubit-qubit interaction of Ising type emerges, whereas RWA leads to isotropic interaction. This impacts …
Photon-based strongly-correlated lattice models like the Jaynes-Cummings and Rabi lattices differ from their more conventional relatives like the Bose-Hubbard model by the presence of an additional tunable parameter: the frequency detuning between the pseudo-spin degree of freedom and the harmonic mode frequency on each site. Whenever this detuning is large compared to relevant coupling strengths, the system is said to be in the dispersive regime. The physics of this regime is well-understood at the level of a single Jaynes-Cummings or Rabi site. Here, we extend the theoretical description of …
We discuss the Jaynes-Cummings-Hubbard model (JCHM) describing the superfluid-Mott insulator transition of polaritons (i.e., dressed photon-qubit states) in coupled qubit-cavity arrays in the crossover from strong to weak correlations. In the strongly correlated regime the phase diagram and the elementary excitations of lattice polaritons near the Mott lobes are calculated analytically using a slave boson theory (SBT). The opposite regime of weakly interacting polariton superfluids is described by a weak-coupling mean-field theory (MFT) for a generalised multi-mode Dicke model. We show that a …
Sympathetic cooling of trapped ions has been established as a powerful technique for manipulation of non-laser-coolable ions (Raizen1992,Waki1992,Bowe1999,Barrett2003). For molecular ions, it promises vastly enhanced spectroscopic resolution and accuracy. However, this potential remains untapped so far, with the best resolution achieved being not better than $5\times10^{-8}$ fractionally, due to residual Doppler broadening being present in ion clusters even at the lowest achievable translational temperatures (Bressel2012). Here we introduce a general and accessible approach that enables Dopple…
A key challenge for semiconductor quantum-dot charge qubits is the realization of long-range qubit coupling and performing high-fidelity gates based on it. Here, we describe a new type of charge qubit formed by an electron confined in a triple-quantum-dot system, enabling single and two-qubit gates working in the dipolar and quadrupolar detuning sweet spots. We further present the form for the long-range dipolar coupling between the charge qubit and the superconducting resonator. Based on the hybrid system composed of the qubits and the resonator, we present two types of entangling gates: the …
The dispersive regime of circuit QED is the main workhorse for todays quantum computing prototypes based on superconducting qubits. Analytic descriptions of this model typically rely on the rotating wave approximation of the interaction between the qubits and resonators, using the Jaynes-Cummings model as starting point for the dispersive transformation. Here we present analytic results on the dispersive regime of the dissipative Rabi model, without taking the rotating wave approximation of the underlying Hamiltonian. Using a recently developed hybrid perturbation theory based on the expansion…
We study effective light-matter interactions in a circuit QED system consisting of a single $LC$ resonator, which is coupled symmetrically to multiple superconducting qubits. Starting from a minimal circuit model, we demonstrate that in addition to the usual collective qubit-photon coupling the resulting Hamiltonian contains direct qubit-qubit interactions, which have a drastic effect on the ground and excited state properties of such circuits in the ultrastrong coupling regime. In contrast to a superradiant phase transition expected from the standard Dicke model, we find an opposite mechanism…
Joint measurements of multiple qubits have been shown to open new possibilities for quantum information processing. Here, we present an approach based on homodyne detection to realize such measurements in the dispersive regime of cavity/circuit QED. By changing details of the measurement, the readout can be tuned from extracting only single-qubit to only multi-qubit properties. We obtain a reduced stochastic master equation describing this measurement and its effect on the qubits. As an example, we present results showing parity measurements of two qubits. In this situation, measurement of an …
In the optomechanical cooling of a dispersively coupled oscillator, it is only possible to reach the oscillator ground state in the resolved sideband regime, where the cavity-mode line width is smaller than the resonant frequency of the mechanical oscillator being cooled. In this paper, we show that the dispersively coupled system can be cooled to the ground state in the unresolved sideband regime using an ancillary oscillator, which is coupled to the same optical mode via dissipative interaction. The ancillary oscillator has a resonant frequency close to that of the target oscillator; thus, t…
