A diagonalization scheme for the Rabi Hamiltonian, which describes a qubit interacting with a single-mode radiation field via a dipole interaction, is proposed. It is shown that the Rabi Hamiltonian can be solved almost exactly using a progressive scheme that involves a finite set of one variable polynomial equations. We study the coherent dynamics of relaxing qubits driven by a bichromatic radiation in the dispersive regime, when detuning of the frequency $ω_{rf}$ of a longitudinal radiofrequency field from the Rabi frequency $ω_{1}$ in a transverse microwave field is comparable in magnitude to $ω_{rf}$ and $ω_{1}$. We analytically describe this regime beyond the rotating wave approximation and find that the dominant feature of dynamics of qubits is the shift of the Rabi frequency caused by the dynamical Zeeman and Bloch-Siegert-like effects. In a Rabi oscillation experiment with a superconducting qubit we show that a visibility in the qubit excited state population of more than 90 % can be attained. We perform a dispersive measurement of the qubit state by coupling the qubit non-resonantly to a transmission line resonator and probing the resonator transmission spectrum. The measurement process is well characterized and quantitatively understood. The qubit coherence time is determined to be larger than 500 ns in a measurement of Ramsey fringes.
We demonstrate room-temperature strong-coupling between a mid-infrared ($λ$=9.9 $μ$m) intersubband transition and the fundamental cavity mode of a metal-insulator-metal resonator. We revisit the theoretical description of the ultrastrong light-matter interaction in terms of exactly solvable effective Hamiltonians. A perturbative approach based on polaronic and spin-dependent squeezing transformations provides an effective Hamiltonian for the quantum Rabi model up to the second order in the expansion parameter. The model consistently includes both rotating and counter-rotating terms, going therefore beyond the rotating wave approximation. We study two dispersive regimes in the dynamics of $N$ two-level atoms interacting with a bosonic mode for long interaction times. Firstly, we analyze the dispersive multiqubit quantum Rabi model for the regime in which the qubit frequencies are equal and smaller than the mode frequency, and for values of the coupling strength similar or larger than the mode frequency, namely, the deep strong coupling regime. A tractable N-state Rabi Hamiltonian is introduced by extending the parity symmetry of the two-state model. The single-mode case provides a few-parameter description of a novel class of periodic systems, predicting that the ground state of certain four-state atom-cavity systems will undergo parity change at strong coupling. A group-theoretical treatment provides physical insight into dynamics and a modified rotating wave approximation obtains accurate analytical energies. The dissipative case can be applied to study excitation energy transfer in molecular rings or chains.
