Dynamics of a system exhibits non-adiabaticity even for slow quenches near critical points. We analyze the response to disorder in quenches on a non-adiabaticity quantifier for the quantum Rabi model, which possesses a phase transition between normal and superradiant phases. We consider a disordered version of a quench in the Rabi model, in which the system residing in the ground state of an initial Hamiltonian of the normal phase is quenched to the final Hamiltonian corresponding to the critical point. The disorder is inserted either in the total time the quench or in the quench parameter itself. We solve the corresponding quantum dynamics numerically, and find that the non-adiabatic effects are unaffected by the presence of disorder in the total time of the quench. This result is then independently confirmed by the application of adiabatic perturbation theory and the Kibble- Zurek mechanism. For the disorder in the quench parameter, we report a monotonic increase in the adiabaticity with the strength of the disorder. Lastly, we consider a quench where the final Hamiltonian is chosen as the average over the disordered final Hamiltonians, and show that this quench is more adiabatic than the average of the quenches with the disorder in final Hamiltonian.
We propose a method for the fast generation of nonclassical ground states of the Rabi model in the ultrastrong and deep-strong coupling regimes via the shortcuts-to-adiabatic (STA) dynamics. The time-dependent quantum Rabi model is simulated by applying parametric amplification to the Jaynes-Cummings model. Using experimentally feasible parametric drive, this STA protocol can generate large-size Schrödinger cat states, through a process that is 10 times faster compared to adiabatic protocols. Such fast evolution increases the robustness of our protocol against dissipation. Our method enables o…
Adiabaticity of quantum evolution is important in many settings. One example is the adiabatic quantum computation. Nevertheless, up to now, there is no effective method to test the adiabaticity of the evolution when the eigenenergies of the driven Hamiltonian are not known. We propose a simple method to check adiabaticity of a quantum process for an arbitrary quantum system. We further propose a operational method for finding a uniformly adiabatic quench scheme based on Kibble-Zurek mechanism for the case when the initial and the final Hamiltonians are given. This method should help in impleme…
NOON states play the important roles in quantum information processings and quantum metrology, but the fidelities of these states generated previously are limited typically by the practically-unavoidable decoherence and operational imperfections. Here, we propose an efficient scheme to generate photonic NOON states alternatively by rapid population passage technique via shortcut to adiabaticity (STA), rather than the usual Rabi oscillations. Since the deterministic population passages based on the STAs are insensitive to details of the operations and can be implemented as fast as the Rabi osci…
We show that the quantum Fisher information attained in an adiabatic approach to critical quantum metrology cannot lead to the Heisenberg limit of precision and therefore regular quantum metrology under optimal settings is always superior. Furthermore, we argue that even though shortcuts to adiabaticity can arbitrarily decrease the time of preparing critical ground states, they cannot be used to achieve or overcome the Heisenberg limit for quantum parameter estimation in adiabatic critical quantum metrology. As case studies, we explore the application of counter-diabatic driving to the Landau-…
We introduce and analyze theoretically a procedure that combines slow adiabatic STIRAP manipulation with short nonadiabatic Rabi pulses to produce any desired three-level state in a qutrit system. In this protocol, the fast pulses create superpositions between the ground state and the first excited state, while the slow pulses transfer an arbitrary population to the second excited state via stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP). We demonstrate high-fidelity quantum control of the level populations and phases and we characterize the errors incurred under the breakdown of adiabaticity. In …
Driving a homogeneous system across a quantum phase transition in a quench-time $τ_Q$ generates excitations on wavelengths longer than the Kibble-Zurek (KZ) length $\hatξ\proptoτ_Q^{ν/(1+zν)}$ within the KZ time window $\hat t\proptoτ_Q^{zν/(1+zν)}$, where $z$ and $ν$ are the critical exponents. Quenches designed with local time-dependent inhomogeneity can introduce a gap in the spectrum. For a variety of setups with short-range interactions, they have been shown to suppress excitations if the spatial velocity of the inhomogenous front is below the characteristic KZ velocity $\hat v \propto \h…
The atoms trapped in microcavities and interacting through the exchange of virtual photons can be modeled as an anisotropic Heisenberg spin-1/2 lattice. We study the dynamics of the geometric phase of this system under the linear quenching process of laser field detuning which shows the XX criticality of the geometric phase in presence of single Rabi frequency oscillation. We also study the quantum criticality for different quenching rate in the presence of single or two Rabi frequencies oscillation in the system.
We propose a mean to obtain computationally useful resource states also known as cluster states, for measurement-based quantum computation, via transitionless quantum driving algorithm. The idea is to cool the system to its unique ground state and tune some control parameters to arrive at computationally useful resource state, which is in one of the degenerate ground states. Even though there is set of conserved quantities already present in the model Hamiltonian, which prevents the instantaneous state to go to any other eigenstate subspaces, one cannot quench the control parameters to get the…
Delta kick cooling (DKC) is used to compress the momentum distribution of ultracold quantum matter. It combines expansion dynamics with the use of kick pulses, designed via classical methods, that bring the system to rest. We introduce an exact approach to DKC for arbitrary scale-invariant dynamics of quantum gases, lifting the original restrictions to free evolution and noninteracting systems, to account for the control of atomic clouds in a time-dependent harmonic trap that can be either repulsive (inverted) or confining. We show that DKC assisted by a repulsive potential outperforms the con…
Coupling a quantum many-body system to a cavity can create bifurcation points in its phase diagram, where the ground state makes sudden switchings between different phases. Here we study the dynamical quantum phase transition of a transverse field Ising model coupled to a cavity. We show that an infinitesimal quench of the cavity driving at the bifurcation points induces gradual evolution of the Ising model to pass across the quantum critical point and excites quasiparticles. Meanwhile, when the driving is slowly ramped through the bifurcation points, the adiabaticity of the evolution and the …
We consider the Rabi Hamiltonian which exhibits a quantum phase transition (QPT) despite consisting only of a single-mode cavity field and a two-level atom. We prove QPT by deriving an exact solution in the limit where the atomic transition frequency in unit of the cavity frequency tends to infinity. The effect of a finite transition frequency is studied by analytically calculating finite-frequency scaling exponents as well as performing a numerically exact diagonalization. Going beyond this equilibrium QPT setting, we prove that the dynamics under slow quenches in the vicinity of the critical…
We investigate the excitation dynamics at a first-order quantum phase transition (QPT). More specifically, we consider the quench-induced QPT in the quantum search algorithm, which aims at finding out a marked element in an unstructured list. We begin by deriving the exact dynamics of the model, which is shown to obey a Riccati differential equation. Then, we discuss the probabilities of success by adopting either global or local adiabaticity strategies. Moreover, we determine the disturbance of the quantum criticality as a function of the system size. In particular, we show that the critical …
Driven-dissipative phase transitions are currently a topic of intense research due to the prospect of experimental realizations in quantum optical setups. The most paradigmatic model presenting such a transition is the Kerr model, which predicts the phenomenon of optical bistability, where the system may relax to two different steady-states for the same driving condition. These states, however, are inherently out-of-equilibrium and are thus characterized by the continuous production of irreversible entropy, a key quantifier in thermodynamics. In this paper we study the dynamics of the entropy …
We consider a linear quench from the paramagnetic to ferromagnetic phase in the quantum Ising chain interacting with a static spin environment. Both decoherence from the environment and non-adiabaticity of the evolution near a critical point excite the system from the final ferromagnetic ground state. For weak decoherence and relatively fast quenches the excitation energy, proportional to the number of kinks in the final state, decays like an inverse square root of a quench time, but slow transitions or strong decoherence make it decay in a much slower logarithmic way. We also find that fideli…

Quantum simulation provides important tools in studying strongly correlated many-body systems with controllable parameters. As a hybrid of two fundamental models in quantum optics and in condensed matter physics, the Rabi-Hubbard model demonstrates rich physics through the competition between local spin-boson interactions and long-range boson hopping. Here we report an experimental realization of the Rabi-Hubbard model using up to $16$ trapped ions and present a controlled study of its equilibrium properties and quantum dynamics. We observe the ground-state quantum phase transition by slowly q…
Quantum phase transitions (QPTs) are usually associated with many-body systems with large degrees of freedom approaching the thermodynamic limit. In such systems, the many-body ground state shows abrupt changes at zero temperature when the control parameter of the Hamiltonian is scanned across a quantum critical point. Recently it has been realized that a QPT can also occur in a simple system composed of only a two-level atom and a single-mode bosonic field, described by the quantum Rabi model (QRM). Here we report the first experimental demonstration of a QPT in the QRM using a single trapped…
We investigate the quench dynamics of an open quantum system involving a quantum phase transition. In the isolated case, the quench dynamics involving the phase transition exhibits a number of scaling relations with the quench rate as predicted by the celebrated Kibble-Zurek mechanism. In contact with an environment however, these scaling laws breakdown and one may observe an anti-Kibble-Zurek behavior: slower ramps lead to less adiabatic dynamics, increasing thus non-adiabatic effects with the quench time. In contrast to previous works, we show here that such anti-Kibble-Zurek scaling can acq…
The Kibble-Zurek mechanism predicts the formation of topological defects and other excitations that quantify how much a quantum system driven across a quantum critical point fails to be adiabatic. We point out that, thanks to the divergent linear susceptibility at the critical point, even a tiny symmetry breaking bias can restore the adiabaticity. The minimal required bias scales like $τ_Q^{-βδ/(1+zν)}$, where $β,δ,z,ν$ are the critical exponents and $τ_Q$ is a quench time. We test this prediction by DMRG simulations of the quantum Ising chain. It is directly applicable to the recent emulation…
We theoretically analyze the errors in one- and two-qubit gates in SiMOS and Si/SiGe spin qubit experiments, and present a pulse sequence which can suppress the errors in exchange coupling due to charge noise using ideal local rotations. In practice, the overall fidelity of the pulse sequence will be limited only by the quality of the single-qubit gates available: the C-phase infidelity comes out to be $\approx 2.5 \times$ the infidelity of the single-qubit operations. Based on experimental data, we model the errors and show that C-phase gate infidelities can be suppressed by two orders in mag…
We unravel the correlated tunneling dynamics of a mass imbalanced few-body fermi-fermi mixture upon quenching the tilt of a double-well. The non-equilibrium dynamics of both species changes from Rabi-oscillations close to the non-interacting limit to a delayed tunneling dynamics for moderate interspecies repulsions. Considering strong interspecies interactions the lighter species experiences quantum self-trapping due to the heavier species which acts as an effective material barrier, while performing almost perfect Rabi-oscillations. The degree of entanglement, inherent in the system, is analy…
We study information theoretic geometry in time dependent quantum mechanical systems. First, we discuss global properties of the parameter manifold for two level systems exemplified by i) Rabi oscillations and ii) quenching dynamics of the XY spin chain in a transverse magnetic field, when driven across anisotropic criticality. Next, we comment upon the nature of the geometric phase from classical holonomy analyses of such parameter manifolds. In the context of the transverse XY model in the thermodynamic limit, our results are in contradiction to those in the existing literature, and we argue…
Recent experiments have demonstrated the generation of entanglement by quasi-adiabatically driving through quantum phase transitions of a ferromagnetic spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate in the presence of a tunable quadratic Zeeman shift. We analyze, in terms of the Fisher information, the interferometric value of the entanglement accessible by this approach. In addition to the Twin-Fock phase studied experimentally, we unveil a second regime, in the broken axisymmetry phase, which provides Heisenberg scaling of the quantum Fisher information and can be reached on shorter time scales. We identif…
In this paper we address the question how the Kibble-Zurek mechanism, which describes the formation of topological defects in quantum systems subjected to a quench across a critical point, is generalized to the same scenario but for driven-dissipative quantum critical systems. In these out of equilibrium systems, the critical behavior is manifested in the steady states rather than in the ground states as in quantum critical models of closed systems. To give the generalization we need to establish what is meant by adiabaticity in open quantum systems. Another most crucial concept that we clarif…
