A superconducting qubit coupled to a read-out resonator is currently the building block of multiple quantum computing as well as quantum optics experiments. A typical qubit-resonator system is coupled in the dispersive regime, where the detuning between qubit and resonator is much greater than the coupling between them. In this work, we fabricated and measured a superconducting transmon-resonator system in the non-dispersive regime. The dressed states formed by the mixing of the bare qubit and resonator states can be further mixed by applying a drive on the qubit, leading to the formation of polariton states. We report experimental studies of transitions between polariton states at varying driving powers and frequencies and show how the non-dispersive coupling of the higher levels of the qubit-resonator system modifies the polariton eigenstates and the corresponding transition frequencies. We also report close agreement with numerical results obtained from a driven Jaynes-Cummings Model beyond the dispersive regime.
We demonstrate the fundamental links existing between two different descriptions of quantum electrodynamics in inhomogeneous, lossy and dispersive dielectric media which are based either on the Huttner-Barnett formalism for polaritons [B. Huttner and S. M. Barnett, Phys.Rev. A 46, 4306 (1992)] or the Langevin noise approach using fluctuating currents [T. Gruner and D.-G. Welsch, Phys.Rev.A 53, 1818 (1996)]. In this work we demonstrate the practical equivalence of the two descriptions by introducing the concept of effective photon state associated with some specific noise current distribution. …
In recent years, a rigorous quantum mechanical model for the interaction between light and macroscopic dispersive, lossy dielectrics has emerged -macroscopic QED- allowing the application of the usual methods of quantum field theory. Here, we apply time dependent perturbation theory to a general class of problems involving time dependent lossy, dispersive dielectrics. The model is used to derive polariton excitation rates in three illustrative cases, including that of a travelling Gaussian perturbation to the susceptibility of an otherwise infinite homogeneous dielectric, motivated by recent e…
We demonstrate room-temperature strong-coupling between a mid-infrared ($λ$=9.9 $μ$m) intersubband transition and the fundamental cavity mode of a metal-insulator-metal resonator. Patterning of the resonator surface enables surface-coupling of the radiation and introduces an energy dispersion which can be probed with angle-resolved reflectivity. In particular, the polaritonic dispersion presents an accessible energy minimum at k=0 where - potentially - polaritons can accumulate. We also show that it is possible to maximize the coupling of photons into the polaritonic states and - simultaneousl…
Using microscopic models in which both photons and excitons are treated as microscopic degrees of freedom, we discuss polaritons of two cases: One is the case when excitonic parameters are time dependent. The time dependence causes creation of polaritons from a "false vacuum." % We present the creation spectra of both % the lower- and upper-branch polaritons. It is shown that both the creation sepctra and the creation efficiency are much different from the results of the previous studies. The other is polaritons in absorptive and inhomogeneous cavities. A polariton in such a system cannot be v…
A quantum theory of dispersion for an inhomogeneous solid is obtained, from a starting point of multipolar coupled atoms interacting with an electromagnetic field. The dispersion relations obtained are equivalent to the standard classical Sellmeir equations obtained from the Drude-Lorentz model. In the homogeneous (plane-wave) case, we obtain the detailed quantum mode structure of the coupled polariton fields, and show that the mode expansion in all branches of the dispersion relation is completely defined by the refractive index and the group-velocity for the polaritons. We demonstrate a stra…
We develop a dual description of quantum optics adapted to dielectric systems without magnetic property. Our formalism, which is shown to be equivalent to the standard one within some dipolar approximations discussed in the article, is applied to the description of polaritons in dielectric media. We show that the dual formalism leads to the Huttner-Barnett equations [B. Huttner, S. M. Barnett, Phys. Rev. A \textbf{46}, 4306 (1992)] for QED in dielectric systems. More generally, we discuss the role of electromagnetic duality in the quantization procedure for optical systems and derive the struc…

We present a proposal and a feasibility study for the creation and quantum state tomography of a single polariton state of an atomic ensemble. The collective non-classical and non-Gaussian state of the ensemble is generated by detection of a single forward scattered photon. The state is subsequently characterized by atomic state tomography performed using strong dispersive light-atoms interaction followed by a homodyne measurement on the transmitted light. The proposal is backed by preliminary experimental results showing projection noise limited sensitivity and a simulation demonstrating the …
Rydberg polaritons provide an example of a rare type of system where three-body interactions can be as strong or even stronger than two-body interactions. The three-body interactions can be either dispersive or dissipative, with both types possibly giving rise to exotic, strongly-interacting, and topological phases of matter. Despite past theoretical and experimental studies of the regime with dispersive interaction, the dissipative regime is still mostly unexplored. Using a renormalization group technique to solve the three-body Schrödinger equation, we show how the shape and strength of diss…
Quantum plasmonics experiments have on multiple occasions reported the observation of quantum coherence of discrete plasmons, which exhibit remarkable preservation of quantum interference visibility, a seemingly surprising feature for systems mixing light and matter with high ohmic losses during propagation. However, most experiments to date used essentially weakly-confined plasmons, which experience limited light-matter hybridization, thus limiting the potential for decoherence. Here, we report quantum coherence of plasmons near the surface plasmon polariton (SPP) resonance frequency, where p…
Cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED) manipulates the coupling of light with matter, and allows for several emitters to couple coherently with one light mode. However, even in a many-body system, the light-matter coupling mechanism was so far restricted to one body processes. Leveraging cavity QED for the quantum simulation of complex, many-body systems has thus far relied on multi-photon processes, scaling down the light-matter interaction to the low energy and slow time scales of the many-body problem. Here we report on cavity QED experiments using molecular transitions in a strongly interact…

We take a closer look at the fundamental Casimir-Polder interaction between quantum particles and dispersive dielectric surfaces with surface polariton or plasmon resonances. Linear response theory shows that in the near field, van der Waals, regime the free energy shift of a particle contains a thermal component that depends exclusively on the population/excitation of the evanescent surface polariton/plasmon modes. Our work makes evident the link between particle surface interaction and near field thermal emission and demonstrates how this can be used to engineer Casimir-Polder forces. We als…
We build up a consistent theory of quantum electrodynamics in the presence of macroscopic polarizable media. We use the Huttner-Barnett model of a dispersive and absorbing dielectric medium and formulate the theory in terms of interacting quantum fields. We integrate out the damped polaritons by using diagrammatic techniques and find an exact expression for the displacement field (photon) propagator in the presence of a dispersive and absorbing dielectric half-space. This opens a new route to traceable perturbative calculations of the same kind as in free-space quantum electrodynamics. As a wo…

Qubit readout is an indispensable element of any quantum information processor. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate a non-perturbative cross-Kerr coupling between a transmon and a polariton mode which enables an improved quantum non-demolition (QND) readout for superconducting qubits. The new mechanism uses the same experimental techniques as the standard QND qubit readout in the dispersive approximation, but due to its non-perturbative nature, it maximizes the speed, the single-shot fidelity and the QND properties of the readout. In addition, it minimizes the effect of unwanted decay …
Anticrossing behavior between magnons in a non-collinear chiral magnet Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$ and a two-mode X-band microwave resonator was studied in the temperature range 5-100K. In the field-induced ferrimagnetic phase, we observed a strong coupling regime between magnons and two microwave cavity modes with a cooperativity reaching 3600. In the conical phase, cavity modes are dispersively coupled to a fundamental helimagnon mode, and we demonstrate that the magnetic phase diagram of Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$ can be reconstructed from the measurements of the cavity resonance frequency. In the helical phase, a …
Achieving strong coupling between light and matter is usually a challenge in Cavity Quantum Electrodynamics (cQED), especially in solid state systems. For this reason is useful taking advantage of alternative approaches to reach this regime, and then, generate reliable quantum polaritons. In this work we study a system composed of a quantized single mode of a mechanical resonator interacting linearly with both a single mode nanocavity and a two-level single quantum dot. In particular, we focus on the behavior of the indirect light-matter interaction when the phonon mode interfaces both parts. …
We investigate a `pseudo thermalization' effect, where an open quantum system coupled to several non-Markovian reservoirs presents an emergent thermal behaviour in spite of its coupling to a non-equilibrated environment. The thermal behaviour is visible at both static and dynamical levels and the system satisfies the fluctuation-dissipation theorem. Our analysis is focused on the exactly solvable model of a weakly interacting driven-dissipative Bose gas in presence of frequency-dependent particle pumping and losses, and is based on a quantum Langevin theory, which we derive starting from a mic…
