Cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED) manipulates the coupling of light with matter, and allows for several emitters to couple coherently with one light mode. However, even in a many-body system, the light-matter coupling mechanism was so far restricted to one body processes. Leveraging cavity QED for the quantum simulation of complex, many-body systems has thus far relied on multi-photon processes, scaling down the light-matter interaction to the low energy and slow time scales of the many-body problem. Here we report on cavity QED experiments using molecular transitions in a strongly interacting Fermi gas, directly coupling cavity photons to pairs of atoms. The interplay of strong light-matter and strong inter-particle interactions leads to well resolved pair-polaritons, hybrid excitations coherently mixing photons, atom pairs and molecules. The dependence of the pair-polariton spectrum on interatomic interactions is universal, independent of the transition used, demonstrating a direct mapping between pair correlations in the ground state and the optical spectrum. This represents a magnification of many-body effects by two orders of magnitude in energy. In the dispersive regime, it enables fast, minimally destructive measurements of pair correlations, and opens the way towards their measurements at the quantum limit and their coherent manipulation using dynamical, quantized optical fields.
Interfacing light and matter at the quantum level is at the heart of modern atomic and optical physics and enables new quantum technologies involving the manipulation of single photons and atoms. A prototypical atom-light interface is electromagnetically induced transparency, in which quantum interference gives rise to hybrid states of photons and atoms called dark-state polaritons. We have observed individual dark-state polaritons as they propagate through an ultracold atomic gas involving Rydberg states. Strong long-range interactions between Rydberg atoms give rise to an effective interacti…
A master equation approach for the description of dark-state polaritons in coherently driven atomic media is presented. This technique provides a description of light-matter interactions under conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) that is well suited for the treatment of polariton losses. The master equation approach allows us to describe general polariton-polariton interactions that may be conservative, dissipative or a mixture of both. In particular, it enables us to study dissipation-induced correlations as a means for the creation of strongly correlated polariton sys…
Polaritons are an emerging platform for exploration of synthetic materials [1] and quantum information processing [2] that draw properties from two disparate particles: a photon and an atom. Cavity polaritons are particularly promising, as they are long-lived and their dispersion and mass are controllable through cavity geometry [3]. To date, studies of cavity polaritons have operated in the mean-field regime, using short-range interactions between their matter components [4]. Rydberg excitations have recently been demonstrated as a promising matter-component of polaritons [5], due to their st…
We propose a new type of spatially periodic structure, i.e. polaritonic crystal (PolC), to observe a "slow"/"stopped" light phenomenon due to coupled atom-field states (polaritons) in a lattice. Under the tightbinding approximation, such a system realizes an array of weakly coupled trapped two-component atomic ensembles interacting with optical field in a tunnel-coupled one dimensional cavity array. We have shown that the phase transition to the superfluid Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer state, a so-called (BCS)-type state of low branch polaritons, occurs under the strong coupling condition. Such a …
Using the Lindblad approach we develop a general formalism for theoretical description of a spatially inhomogeneous bosonic system with dissipation provided by the interaction of bosons with a phonon bath. We apply our results to model the dynamics of an interacting one-dimensional polariton system in real space and time, analyzing in detail the role of polariton-polariton and polariton-phonon interactions.
We formulate a Bardeen-Cooper-Schriffer (BCS) theory of quasiparticles in a degenerate Fermi gas strongly coupled to photons in a optical cavity. The elementary photonic excitations of the system are cavity polaritons, which consist of a cavity photon and an excitation of an atom within the Fermi sea. The excitation of the atom out of the Fermi sea leaves behind a hole, which together results in a loosely bound Cooper pair, allowing for the system to be written by a BCS wavefunction. As the density of the excitations is increased, the excited atom and hole become more strongly bound, crossing …
Ordinarily, photons do not interact with one another. However, atoms can be used to mediate photonic interactions, raising the prospect of forming synthetic materials and quantum information systems from photons. One promising approach uses electromagnetically-induced transparency with highly-excited Rydberg atoms to generate strong photonic interactions. Adding an optical cavity shapes the available modes and forms strongly-interacting polaritons with enhanced light-matter coupling. However, since every atom of the same species is identical, the atomic transitions available are only those pre…
We develop a theory for light propagating in an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate in the presence of strong interactions. The resulting many-body correlations are shown to have profound effects on the optical properties of this interacting medium. For weak atom-light coupling, there is a well-defined quasiparticle, the polaron-polariton, supporting light propagation with spectral features differing significantly from the noninteracting case. The damping of the polaron-polariton depends nonmonotonically on the light-matter coupling strength, initially increasing and then decreasing. This gives ri…
Quantum nonlinear optics is a quickly growing field with large technological promise, at the same time involving complex and novel many-body phenomena. In the usual scenario, optical nonlinearities originate from the interactions between polaritons, which are hybrid quasi-particles mixing matter and light degrees of freedom. Here we introduce a type of polariton which is intrinsically nonlinear and emerges as the natural quasi-particle in presence quantum degenerate fermionic matter. It is a composite object made of a fermion trapped inside an optical soliton forming a topological defect in a …
Exciton-polaritons in a microcavity are composite two-dimensional bosonic quasiparticles, arising from the strong coupling between confined light modes in a resonant planar optical cavity and excitonic transitions, typically using excitons in semiconductor quantum wells (QWs) placed at the antinodes of the same cavity. Quantum phenomena such as Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC), quantized vortices, and macroscopic quantum states have been reported at temperatures from tens of Kelvin up to room temperatures, and polaritonic devices such as spin switches \cite{Amo2010} and optical transistors hav…
Atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) possess a number of properties that make them attractive for realizing room-temperature polariton devices. An ideal platform for manipulating polariton fluids within monolayer TMDs is that of Bloch surface waves, which confine the electric field to a small volume near the surface of a dielectric mirror. Here we demonstrate that monolayer tungsten disulfide ($\text{WS}_2$) can sustain Bloch surface wave polaritons (BSWPs) with a Rabi splitting of 43 meV and propagation constants reaching 33 $μ$m. In addition, we evidence strong polariton-p…
Bosonic condensates of exciton polaritons (light-matter quasiparticles in a semiconductor) provide a solid-state platform for studies of non-equilibrium quantum systems with a spontaneous macroscopic coherence. These driven, dissipative condensates typically coexist and interact with an incoherent reservoir, which undermines measurements of key parameters of the condensate. Here, we overcome this limitation by creating a high-density exciton-polariton condensate in an optically-induced "box" trap. In this so-called Thomas-Fermi regime, the condensate is fully separated from the reservoir and i…
Photonic materials are an emerging platform to explore quantum matter and quantum dynamics. The development of Rydberg electromagnetically induced transparency provided a clear route to strong interactions between individual optical photons. In conjunction with carefully designed optical resonators, it is now possible to achieve extraordinary control of the properties of individual photons, introducing tunable gauge fields whilst imbuing the photons with mass and embedding them on curved spatial manifolds. Building on work formalizing Rydberg-mediated interactions between propagating photons, …
We study the propagation of strongly interacting Rydberg polaritons through an atomic medium in a one-dimensional optical lattice. We derive an effective single-band Hubbard model to describe the dynamics of the dark state polaritons under realistic assumptions. Within this model, we analyze the driven-dissipative transport of polaritons through the system by considering a coherent drive on one side and by including the spontaneous emission of the metastable Rydberg state. Using a variational approch to solve the many-body problem, we find strong antibunching of the outgoing photons despite th…
A theoretical investigation of the single particle polariton properties for a microcavity embedding a charged quantum well is presented. The electron gas optical susceptibility is calculated numerically using the method devised by Combescot and Nozières. The role of many-body effects, such as the Fermi edge singularity and Anderson orthogonality catastrophe, in the polariton formation is elucidated. By tuning the light-matter coupling the short time behaviour of the electron gas response function is probed and comparison with earlier results only using the long time response are made. Various …
We present a theoretical study on polaritons in highly doped semiconductor microcavities. In particular, we focus on a cavity mode that is resonant with the absorption threshold (`Fermi edge'). In agreement with experimental results, the strong light-matter coupling is maintained under very high doping within our ladder diagram approximation. While the lower polariton is qualitatively unaltered, it acquires a finite lifetime due to relaxation of the valence band hole if the electron density exceeds a certain critical value. On the other hand the upper polariton has a finite lifetime for all de…
Spinorial or multi-component Bose-Einstein condensates may sustain fractional quanta of circulation, vorticant topological excitations with half integer windings of phase and polarization. Matter-light quantum fluids, such as microcavity polaritons, represent a unique test bed for realising strongly interacting and out-of-equilibrium condensates. The direct access to the phase of their wavefunction enables us to pursue the quest of whether half vortices ---rather than full integer vortices--- are the fundamental topological excitations of a spinor polariton fluid. Here, we are able to directly…
Microcavity electron-hole-photon systems in two-dimensions are long anticipated to exhibit a crossover from Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) to Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) superfluid, when carrier density is tuned to reach the Mott transition density. Yet, theoretical understanding of such a BEC-BCS crossover largely relies on the mean-field framework and the nature of the carriers at the crossover remains unclear to some extent. Here, motivated by the recent demonstration of a BCS polariton laser {[}Hu \textit{et al.}, arXiv:1902.00142{]} and based on a simplified short-range description of…
We study Bogoliubov excitations of a spinor Bose Einstein condensate in a honeycomb periodic potential, in the presence of a Zeeman field and of a spin-orbit coupling specific for photonic systems, which is due to the energy splitting between TE and TM polarized eigenstates. We also consider spin-anisotropic interactions typical for cavity polaritons. We show that the non-trivial topology of the single particle case is also present for the interacting system. At low condensate density, the topology of the single-particle bands is transferred to the bogolon dispersion. At a critical value, the …
Interacting Bose-Fermi systems play a central role in condensed matter physics. Here, we analyze a novel Bose-Fermi mixture formed by a cavity exciton-polariton condensate interacting with a two-dimensional electron system. We show that that previous predictions of superconductivity [F.P. Laussy, Phys. Rev. Lett. 10, 104 (2010)] and excitonic supersolid formation [I.A. Shelykh, Phys. Rev. Lett. 14, 105 (2010)] in this system are closely intertwined- resembling the predictions for strongly correlated electron systems such as high temperature superconductors. In stark contrast to a large majorit…
We study a system of three photons in an atomic medium coupled to Rydberg states near the conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency. Based on the analytical analysis of the microscopic set of equations in the far-detuned regime, the effective three-body interaction for these Rydberg polaritons is derived. For slow light polaritons, we find a strong three-body repulsion with the remarkable property that three polaritons can become essentially non-interacting at short distances. This analysis allows us to derive the influence of the three-body repulsion on bound states and correlati…
The hybridization of light and matter excitations in the form of polaritons has enabled major advances in understanding and controlling optical nonlinearities. Entering the quantum regime of strong interactions between individual photons has however remained challenging since the strength of achievable polariton interactions is typically limited by the available interactions in the material. Here, we investigate collisions between dark-state polaritons in three-level systems and discover a resonant process that yields effective interactions, which are much larger than the underlying interactio…
The quest to realise strongly interacting photons remains an outstanding challenge both for fundamental science and for applications. Here, we explore mediated photon-photon interactions in a highly imbalanced two-component mixture of exciton-polaritons in a semiconductor microcavity. Using a theory that takes into account non-perturbative correlations between the excitons as well as strong light-matter coupling, we demonstrate the high tunability of an effective interaction between quasiparticles formed by minority component polaritons interacting with a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of a ma…
We present an experimental signature of the Anderson localisation of microcavity polaritons, and provide a systematic study of the dependence on disorder strength. We reveal a controllable degree of localisation, as characterised by the inverse-participation ratio, by tuning the positional disorder of arrays of interacting mesas. This constitutes the realisation of disorder-induced localisation in a driven-dissipative system. In addition to being an ideal candidate for investigating localisation in this regime, microcavity polaritons hold promise for low-power, ultra-small devices and their lo…
Microcavity exciton polaritons are promising candidates to build a new generation of highly nonlinear and integrated optoelectronic devices. Such devices range from novel coherent light emitters to reconfigurable potential landscapes for electro-optical polariton-lattice based quantum simulators as well as building blocks of optical logic architectures. Especially for the latter, the strongly interacting nature of the light-matter hybrid particles has been used to facilitate fast and efficient switching of light by light, something which is very hard to achieve with weakly interacting photons.…
We develop a many-body theory for the properties of exciton-polaritons interacting strongly with a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of exciton-polaritons in another spin state. Interactions lead to the presence of a two-body bound state, the bi-exciton, giving rise to a Feshbach resonance in the polariton spectrum when its energy is equal to that of two free polaritons. Using the minimal set of terms to describe this resonance, our theory recovers the main findings of two experiments probing interaction effects for upper and lower polaritons in a BEC. This strongly supports that Feshbach physics…
We present a theoretical study of the quantum depletion of microcavity polaritons that are excited with a resonant laser pulse. The dynamics of the quantum fluctuations are interpreted in the context of quantum quenches in general and in terms of the dynamical Casimir effect in particular. We compute the time evolution of the first and second order correlation functions of the polariton condensate. Our theoretical modelling is based on the truncated Wigner approximation for interacting Bose gases. For homogeneous systems, analytical results are obtained in the linearised Bogoliubov approximati…
The property of superfluidity, first discovered in liquid 4He, is closely related to Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of interacting bosons. However, even at zero temperature, when one would expect the whole bosonic quantum liquid to become condensed, a fraction of it is excited into higher momentum states via interparticle interactions and quantum fluctuations -- the phenomenon of quantum depletion. Quantum depletion of weakly interacting atomic BECs in thermal equilibrium is well understood theoretically but is difficult to measure. This is even more challenging in driven-dissipative systems…
We study a system of interacting matter quasiparticles strongly coupled to photons inside an optomechanical cavity. The resulting normal modes of the system are represented by hybrid polaritonic quasiparticles, which acquire effective nonlinearity. Its strength is influenced by the presence of the mechanical mode and depends on the resonance frequency of the cavity. This leads to an interactive type of optomechanical coupling, being distinct from the previously studied dispersive and dissipative couplings in optomechanical systems. The emergent interactive coupling is shown to generate effecti…
We demonstrate a method to create potential barriers with polarized light beams for polaritons in semiconductor microcavities. The form of the barriers is engineered via the real space shape of a focalised beam on the sample. Their height can be determined by the visibility of the scattering waves generated in a polariton fluid interacting with them. This technique opens up the way to the creation of dynamical potentials and defects of any shape in semiconductor microcavities.
A Bose--Einstein condensate of exciton polaritons coexisting with a Fermi gas of electrons has been recently proposed as a promising system for realisation of room-temperature superconductivity [Phys. Rev. Lett., 104, 106402 (2010)]. In order to find the optimum conditions for exciton and exciton-polariton mediated superconductivity, we study the attractive mechanism between electrons of a Cooper pair mediated by the exciton and exciton-polariton condensate and analyze the gap equation that follows. We specifically address microcavities with embedded n-doped quantum wells as well as coupled qu…
Rydberg polaritons provide an example of a rare type of system where three-body interactions can be as strong or even stronger than two-body interactions. The three-body interactions can be either dispersive or dissipative, with both types possibly giving rise to exotic, strongly-interacting, and topological phases of matter. Despite past theoretical and experimental studies of the regime with dispersive interaction, the dissipative regime is still mostly unexplored. Using a renormalization group technique to solve the three-body Schrödinger equation, we show how the shape and strength of diss…
We present a new method to study the semiclassical dynamics of the Jaynes-Cummings dimer model, describing two coupled cavities each containing a two-level system (qubit). We develop a Fock space WKB approach in the polariton basis where each site is treated exactly while the intersite polariton hopping is treated semiclassically. We show that the self-trapped states can be viewed as Fock space localized states. We find that this picture yields the correct critical value of interaction strength at which the delocalization-localization transition occurs. Moreover, the validity of our WKB approa…
Exciton-polaritons constitute a unique realization of a quantum fluid interacting with its environment. Using Selenide based microcavities, we exploit this feature to warm up a polariton condensate in a controlled way and monitor its spatial coherence. We determine directly the amount of heat picked up by the condensate by measuring the phonon-polariton scattering rate and comparing it with the loss rate. We find that upon increasing the heating rate, the spatial coherence length decreases markedly, while localized phase structures vanish, in good agreement with a stochastic mean field theory.…
Exciton-polaritons in semiconductor microcavities constitute the archetypal realization of a quantum fluid of light. Under coherent optical drive, remarkable effects such as superfluidity, dark solitons or the nucleation of hydrodynamic vortices have been observed. These phenomena can be all understood as a specific manifestation of collective excitations forming on top of the polariton condensate. In this work, we performed a Brillouin scattering experiment to measure their dispersion relation $ω(\mathbf{k})$ directly. The result, such as a speed of sound which is apparently twice too low, ca…
We examine the possibility of observing Bose condensation of a confined two-dimensional polariton gas in an organic quantum well. We deduce a suitable parameterization of a model Hamiltonian based upon the cavity geometry, the biexciton binding energy, and similar spectroscopic and structural data. By converting the sum-over-states to a semiclassical integration over $d$-dimensional phase space, we show that while an ideal 2-D Bose gas will not undergo condensation, an interacting gas with the Bogoliubov dispersion $H(p)\approx s p$ close to $p=0$ will undergo Bose condensation at a given crit…
We theoretically investigate the trion-polariton and the effects of a two-dimensional electron gas on its single particle properties. Focussing on the trion and exciton transitions, we set up an effective model and calculate the optical absorption of the quantum well containing the 2DEG. Including the light-matter coupling, we compute the Rabi splitting and polariton lineshapes as a function of 2DEG density. The role of finite temperature is investigated. The spatial extent of the trion-polariton is also calculated. We find a substantial charge build-up at short distances as long as the Rabi f…
Two-dimensional semiconductors inside optical microcavities have emerged as a versatile platform to explore new hybrid light-matter quantum states. The strong light-matter coupling leads to the formation of exciton-polaritons, which in turn interact with the surrounding electron gas to form quasiparticles called polaron-polaritons. Here, we develop a general microscopic framework to calculate the properties of these quasiparticles such as their energy and the interactions between them. From this, we give microscopic expressions for the parameters entering a Landau theory for the polaron-polari…
Exciton-polaritons are hybrid light-matter quasiparticles formed by strongly interacting photons and excitons (electron-hole pairs) in semiconductor microcavities. They have emerged as a robust solid-state platform for next-generation optoelectronic applications as well as fundamental studies of quantum many-body physics. Importantly, exciton-polaritons are a profoundly open (i.e., non-Hermitian) quantum system: it requires constant pumping of energy and continuously decays releasing coherent radiation. Thus, the exciton-polaritons always exist in a balanced potential landscape of gain and los…
A quantum fluid passing an obstacle behaves differently from a classical one. When the flow is slow enough, the quantum gas enters a superfluid regime and neither whirlpools nor waves form around the obstacle. For higher flow velocities, it has been predicted that the perturbation induced by the defect gives rise to the turbulent emission of quantised vortices and to the nucleation of solitons. Using an interacting Bose gas of exciton-polaritons in a semiconductor microcavity, we report the transition from superfluidity to the hydrodynamic formation of oblique dark solitons and vortex streets …
