The multi-indexed orthogonal polynomials (the Meixner, little $q$-Jacobi (Laguerre), ($q$-)Racah, Wilson, Askey-Wilson types) satisfying second order difference equations were constructed in discrete quantum mechanics. They are polynomials in the sinusoidal coordinates $η(x)$ ($x$ is the coordinate of quantum system) and expressed in terms of the Casorati determinants whose matrix elements are functions of $x$ at various points. By using shape invariance properties, we derive various equivalent determinant expressions, especially those whose matrix elements are functions of the same point $x$. Except for the ($q$-)Racah case, they can be expressed in terms of $η$ only, without explicit $x$-dependence.
In previous papers, we discussed the recurrence relations of the multi-indexed orthogonal polynomials of the Laguerre, Jacobi, Wilson and Askey-Wilson types. In this paper we explore those of the Racah and $q$-Racah types. For the $M$-indexed ($q$-)Racah polynomials, we derive $3+2M$ term recurrence relations with variable dependent coefficients and $1+2L$ term ($L\geq M+1$) recurrence relations with constant coefficients. Based on the latter, the generalized closure relations and the creation and annihilation operators of the quantum mechanical systems described by the multi-indexed ($q$-)Rac…
We present new exactly solvable systems of the discrete quantum mechanics with pure imaginary shifts, whose physical range of the coordinate is the whole real line. These systems are shape invariant and their eigenfunctions are described by the multi-indexed continuous Hahn and Meixner-Pollaczek orthogonal polynomials. The set of degrees of these multi-indexed polynomials are $\{\ell_{\mathcal{D}},\ell_{\mathcal{D}}+1,\ell_{\mathcal{D}}+2,\ldots\}$, where $\ell_{\mathcal{D}}$ is an even positive integer ($\mathcal{D}$ : a multi-index set), but they form a complete set of orthogonal basis in th…

We present a derivation of classical Hermite, Laguerre, and Jacobi orthogonal polynomials directly through the Gram-Schmidt orthogonization process. The derivation uses certain generalized Vandermonde determinants with entries defined by Gamma and Beta functions. We also provide a geometric formulation of Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization using the Hodge star operator.
A connection between matrix orthogonal polynomials and non-abelian integrable lattices is investigated in this paper. The normalization factors of matrix orthogonal polynomials expressed by quasi-determinant are shown to be solutions of non-abelian Toda lattice in semi-discrete and full-discrete cases. Moreover, with a moment modification method, we demonstrate that the Bäcklund transformation of non-abelian Toda given by Popowicz is equivalent to the non-abelian Volterra lattice, whose solutions could be expressed by quasi-determinants as well.
We study orthogonal polynomials and Hankel determinants generated by a symmetric semi-classical Jacobi weight. By using the ladder operator technique, we derive the second-order nonlinear difference equations satisfied by the recurrence coefficient $β_n(t)$ and the sub-leading coefficient $\mathrm{p}(n,t)$ of the monic orthogonal polynomials. This enables us to obtain the large $n$ asymptotics of $β_n(t)$ and $\mathrm{p}(n,t)$ based on the result of Kuijlaars et al. [Adv. Math. \textbf{188} (2004) 337-398]. In addition, we show the second-order differential equation satisfied by the orthogonal…
Asymptotics of Recurrence Relation Coefficients, Hankel Determinant Ratios, and Root Products Associated with Laurent Polynomials Orthogonal with Respect to Varying Exponential Weights
We construct the systems of bi-orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle where the Toeplitz structure of the moment determinants is replaced by $ \det(w_{2j-k})_{0\leq j,k \leq N-1} $ and the corresponding Vandermonde modulus squared is replaced by $ \prod_{1 \le j < k \le N}(ζ^{2}_k - ζ^{2}_j)(ζ^{-1}_k - ζ^{-1}_j) $. This is the simplest case of a general system of $pj-qk$ with $p,q$ co-prime integers. We derive analogues of the structures well known in the Toeplitz case: third order recurrence relations, determinantal and multiple-integral representations, their reproducing kernel and Christ…
We discuss the magnetization $M_m$ in the $m$-th column of the zig-zag layered 2D Ising model on a half-plane using Kadanoff-Ceva fermions and orthogonal polynomials techniques. Our main result gives an explicit representation of $M_m$ via $m\times m$ Hankel determinants constructed from the spectral measure of a certain Jacobi matrix which encodes the interaction parameters between the columns. We also illustrate our approach by giving short proofs of the classical Kaufman-Onsager-Yang and McCoy-Wu theorems in the homogeneous setup and expressing $M_m$ as a Toeplitz+Hankel determinant for the…
We consider the Hankel determinant generated by the Gaussian weight with two jump discontinuities. Utilizing the results of [C. Min and Y. Chen, Math. Meth. Appl. Sci. {\bf 42} (2019), 301--321] where a second order PDE was deduced for the log derivative of the Hankel determinant by using the ladder operators adapted to orthogonal polynomials, we derive the coupled Painlevé IV system which was established in [X. Wu and S. Xu, arXiv: 2002.11240v2] by a study of the Riemann-Hilbert problem for orthogonal polynomials. Under double scaling, we show that, as $n\rightarrow\infty$, the log derivative…
