We study the weak solvability of a nonlinearly coupled system of parabolic and pseudo-parabolic equations describing the interplay between mechanics, chemical reactions, diffusion and flow in a mixture theory framework. Our approach relies on suitable discrete-in-time energy-like estimates and discrete Gronwall inequalities. In selected parameter regimes, these estimates ensure the convergence of the Rothe method for the discretized partial differential equations.
We consider time-fractional parabolic equations with a Caputo time derivative of order $α\in(0,1)$. For such equations, we give an elementary proof of the weak maximum principle under no assumptions on the sign of the reaction coefficient. This proof is also extended for weak solutions, as well as for various types of boundary conditions and variable-coefficient variable-order multiterm time-fractional parabolic equations.

Pseudo-parabolic equations have been used to model unsaturated fluid flow in porous media. In this paper it is shown how a pseudo-parabolic equation can be upscaled when using a spatio-temporal decomposition employed in the Peszyn'ska-Showalter-Yi paper [8]. The spatial-temporal decomposition transforms the pseudo-parabolic equation into a system containing an elliptic partial differential equation and a temporal ordinary differential equation. To strengthen our argument, the pseudo-parabolic equation has been given advection/convection/drift terms. The upscaling is done with the technique of …
In this paper we investigate direct and inverse problems for time-fractional pseudo-parabolic equations associated with the Jacobi operator. The existence and uniqueness of the solutions are proved. Also, the stability result of the inverse source problem (ISP) is established.
We study the existence of segregated solutions to a class of reaction-diffusion systems with strong interactions, arising in many physical applications. These special solutions are obtained as weak limits of minimizers of a family of perturbed functionals. We prove some a priori estimates through a minimization procedure which is nonstandard in the parabolic theory: our approach is purely variational and all the information is encoded in the family of functionals we consider.
This paper introduces a family of transportation costs between non-negative measures. This family is used to obtain parabolic and reaction-diffusion equations with drift, subject to Dirichlet boundary condition, as the gradient flow of the entropy functional $\int_Ωρ\logρ+Vρ+1\hspace{1mm}dx$. In 2010, Alessio Figalli and Nicola Gigli introduced a transportation cost that can be used to obtain parabolic equations with drift subject to Dirichlet boundary condition. However, the drift and the boundary condition are coupled in their work. The costs in this paper allow the drift and the boundary co…
The goal of the present paper is to present a new approach to the construction of asymptotic (approximating) solutions to parabolic PDE by using the characteristics.
H{ö}lder regularity of parabolic equations with Dirichlet boundary conditions and application to reaction-diffusion and reaction-cross-diffusion systems
By using a time slicing procedure, we represent the solution operator of a second-order parabolic pseudodifferential equation on $\R^n$ as an infinite product of zero-order pseudodifferential operators. A similar representation formula is proven for parabolic differential equations on a compact Riemannian manifold. Each operator in the multi-product is given by a simple explicit Ansatz. The proof is based on an effective use of the Weyl calculus and the Fefferman-Phong inequality.
We study a nonlocal evolution equation that involves a pseudo-parabolic third-order term. The equation models almost uni-directional two-phase flow in Brinkman regimes. We prove the existence of weak solutions for this equation. We also give a series of numerical examples that demonstrate the ability of the equation to support overshooting and explore the behavior of solutions in various limit regimes.
We prove a well-posedness result for two pseudo-parabolic problems, which can be seen as two models for the same electrical conduction phenomenon in heterogeneous media, neglecting the magnetic field. One of the problems is the concentration limit of the other one, when the thickness of the dielectric inclusions goes to zero. The concentrated problem involves a transmission condition through interfaces, which is mediated by a suitable Laplace-Beltrami type equation.
In this article, we consider a semilinear pseudo parabolic heat equation with the nonlinearity which is the product of logarithmic and polynomial functions. Here we prove the global existence of solution to the problem for arbitrary dimension $n \geq 1$ and power index $p>1$. Asymptotic behaviour of the solution has been addressed at different energy levels. Moreover, we prove that the global solution indeed decays with an exponential rate. Finally, sufficient conditions are provided under which blow up of solutions take place.
In this paper, we determine the convergence speed of an upscaling of a pseudo-parabolic system containing drift terms with scale separation of size $ε\ll 1$. Both the upscaling and convergence speed determination exploit a natural spatial-temporal decomposition, which splits the pseudo-parabolic system into a spatial elliptic partial differential equation and a temporal ordinary differential equation. We extend the applicability to space-time domains that are a product of spatial and temporal domains, such as a time-independent perforated spatial domain. Finally, for special cases we show conv…
We consider a system of reaction-diffusion equations in a bounded interval of the real line, with emphasis on the metastable dynamics, whereby the time-dependent solution approaches its steady state in an asymptotically exponentially long time interval as the viscosity coefficient $\varepsilon>0$ goes to zero. To rigorous describe such behavior, we analyze the dynamics of solutions in a neighborhood of a one-parameter family of approximate steady states, and we derive an ODE for the position of the internal interfaces.
This paper concerns the initial-boundary value problem for a mixed pseudo-parabolic $p$-Laplacian type equation. By constructing a family of potential wells, we first present the explicit expression for the depth of potential well, and then prove the existence, uniqueness and decay estimate of global solutions and the blowup phenomena of solutions with subcritical initial energy. Next, we extend parallelly these results to the critical initial energy. Lastly, the existence, uniqueness and asymptotic behavior of global solutions with supercritical initial energy are proved by further analyzing …
We present a full classification of the short-time behaviour of the interfaces and local solutions to the nonlinear parabolic $p$-Laplacian type reaction-diffusion equation of non-Newtonian elastic filtration \[ u_t-\Big(|u_x|^{p-2}u_x\Big)_x+bu^β=0, \ p>2, β>0 \] The interface may expand, shrink, or remain stationary as a result of the competition of the diffusion and reaction terms near the interface, expressed in terms of the parameters $p,β, sign~b$, and asymptotics of the initial function near its support. In all cases, we prove the explicit formula for the interface and the local solutio…
We consider the Cauchy problem of fractional pseudo-parabolic equation on the whole space $R^n,n\geq 1$. Here, the fractional order $α$ is related to the diffusion-type source term behaving as the usual diffusion term on the high frequency part. It has a feature of regularity-gain and regularity-loss for $0<α< 1$ and $α> 1$, respectively. We establish the global existence and time-decay rates for small-amplitude classical solutions to the Cauchy problem for $α>0$. In the case that $0<α< 1$ , we introduce the time-weighted energy method to overcome the weakly dissipative property of the equatio…
In this paper, we consider the initial boundary value problem for a pseudo-parabolic Kirchhoff equation with logarithmic nonlinearity. We use the potential well method to give a threshold result of global existence and finite-time blow-up for the weak solutions with initial energy $J(u_0)\leq d$. When the initial energy $J(u_0)>d$, we find another criterion for the vanishing solution and blow-up solution. We also get the exponential decay rate of the global solution and life span of the blow-up solution. Meanwhile, we study the corresponding stationary problem and establish a convergence relat…
In this paper we present a Calderón-Zygmund approach for a large class of parabolic equations with pseudo-differential operators $\mathcal{A}(t)$ of arbitrary order $γ\in(0,\infty)$. It is assumed that $\cA(t)$ is merely measurable with respect to the time variable. The unique solvability of the equation $$ \frac{\partial u}{\partial t}=\cA u-λu+f, \quad (t,x)\in \fR^{d+1} $$ and the $L_{q}(\fR,L_{p})$-estimate $$ \|u_{t}\|_{L_{q}(\fR,L_{p})}+\|(-Δ)^{γ/2}u\|_{L_{q}(\fR,L_{p})} +λ\|u\|_{L_{q}(\fR,L_{p})}\leq N\|f\|_{L_{q}(\fR,L_{p})} $$ are obtained for any $λ> 0$ and $p,q\in (1,\infty)$.
In the present paper, we study an inhomogeneous pseudo-parabolic equation with nonlocal nonlinearity $$u_t-kΔu_t-Δu=I^γ_{0+}(|u|^{p})+ω(x),\,\ (t,x)\in(0,\infty)\times\mathbb{R}^N,$$ where $p>1,\,k\geq 0$, $ω(x)\neq0$ and $I^γ_{0+}$ is the left Riemann-Liouville fractional integral of order $γ\in(0,1).$ Based on the test function method, we have proved the blow-up result for the critical case $γ=0,\,p=p_c$ for $N\geq3$, which answers an {\bf open question} posed in \cite{Zhou}, and in particular when $k=0$ it improves the result obtained in \cite{Bandle}. An interesting fact is that in the cas…
We study the existence and properties of Lipschitz continuous weak solutions to the Neumann boundary value problem for a class of one-dimensional quasilinear forward-backward diffusion equations with linear convection and reaction. The diffusion flux function is assumed to be of a forward-backward type that contains two forward-diffusion phases. We prove that, for all smooth initial data, there exists at least one weak solution whose spatial derivative stays in the two forward phases. Also, for all smooth initial data that have a derivative value lying in a certain phase transition range, we s…
We continue the study of Modica type gradient estimates for non-homogeneous parabolic equations initiated in \cite{BG}. First, we show that for the parabolic minimal surface equation with a semilinear force term if a certain gradient estimate is satisfied at $t=0$, then it holds for all later times $t>0$. We then establish analogous results for reaction-diffusion equations such as \eqref{e0} below in $\Om \times [0, T]$, where $\Om$ is an epigraph such that the mean curvature of $\partial \Om$ is nonnegative. We then turn our attention to settings where such gradient estimates are valid withou…

This paper treats the solvability of a semilinear reaction-diffusion system, which incorporates transport (diffusion) and reaction effects emerging from two separated spatial scales: $x$ - macro and $y$ - micro. The system's origin connects to the modeling of concrete corrosion in sewer concrete pipes. It consists of three partial differential equations which are mass-balances of concentrations, as well as, one ordinary differential equation tracking the damage-by-corrosion. The system is semilinear, partially dissipative, and coupled via the solid-water interface at the microstructure (pore) …
We investigate the stability of time-periodic solutions of semilinear parabolic problems with Neumann boundary conditions. Such problems are posed on compact submanifolds evolving periodically in time. The discussion is based on the principal eigenvalue of periodic parabolic operators. The study is motivated by biological models on the effect of growth and curvature on patterns formation. The Ricci curvature plays an important role.
In this article we study the positive solutions of the parabolic semilinear system of competitive type \[ \left\{\begin{array} [c]{c}% u_{t}-Δu+v^{p}=0, v_{t}-Δv+u^{q}=0, \end{array} \right. \] in $Ω\times\left(0,T\right) $, where $Ω$ is a domain of $\mathbb{R}^{N},$ and $p,q>0,$ $pq\neq1.$ Despite of the lack of comparison principles, we prove local upper estimates in the superlinear case $pq>1$ of the form \[ u(x,t)\leqq Ct^{-(p+1)/(pq-1)},\qquad v(x,t)\leqq Ct^{-(q+1)/(pq-1)}% \] in $ω\times\left(0,T_{1}\right) ,$ for any domain $ω\subset\subsetΩ$ and $T_{1}\in\left(0,T\right) ,$ and $C=C(N…
In this article we prove the BMO-$L_{\infty}$ estimate $$ \|(-Δ)^{γ/2} u\|_{BMO(\mathbf{R}^{d+1})}\leq N \|\frac{\partial}{\partial t}u-A(t)u\|_{L_{\infty}(\mathbf{R}^{d+1})}, \quad \forall\, u\in C^{\infty}_c(\mathbf{R}^{d+1}) $$ for a wide class of pseudo-differential operators $A(t)$ of order $γ\in (0,\infty)$. The coefficients of $A(t)$ are assumed to be merely measurable in time variable. As an application to the equation $$ \frac{\partial}{\partial t}u=A(t)u+f,\quad t\in \mathbf{R} $$ we prove that for any $u\in C^{\infty}_c(\mathbf{R}^{d+1})$ $$ \|u_t\|_{L_p(\mathbf{R}^{d+1})}+\|(-Δ)^{γ…
We present a full classification of the short-time behaviour of the interfaces and local solutions to the nonlinear parabolic $p$-Laplacian type reaction-diffusion equation of non-Newtonian elastic filtration \[ u_t-\Big(|u_x|^{p-2}u_x\Big)_x+bu^β=0, \ 1<p<2, β>0 \] If the interface is finite, it may expand, shrink, or remain stationary as a result of the competition of the diffusion and reaction terms near the interface, expressed in terms of the parameters $p,β, sign~b$, and asymptotics of the initial function near its support. In some range of parameters, strong domination of the diffusion …
The purpose of this paper is to establish the solvability results to direct and inverse problems for time-fractional pseudo-parabolic equations with the self-adjoint operators. We are especially interested in proving existence and uniqueness of the solutions in the abstract setting of Hilbert spaces.
The origin of non self-similar blow-up in higher-order reaction-diffusion (parabolic), wave (hyperbolic) and nonlinear dispersion equations is explained by a combination of various methods. Some links and similarities with double-log blow-up terms occurring in earlier studies of plasma physics second-order parabolic equations and the nonlinear critical Schrödinger equation are discussed. On the other hand, the log-log factor obtained in Petrovskii's boundary regularity study of a paraboloid vertex for the heat equation in 1934 was the first its appearance in PDE theory.
We give a short, simple proof of maximal regularity for linear parabolic evolution equations on manifolds with cylindrical ends by making use of pseudodifferential parametrices and the concept of R-boundedness for the resolvent.

This paper is concerned with quasilinear parabolic reaction-diffusion-advection systems on extended domains. Frameworks for well-posedness in Hilbert spaces and spaces of continuous functions are presented, based on known results using maximal regularity. It is shown that spectra of travelling waves on the line are meaningfully given by the familiar tools for semilinear equations, such as dispersion relations, and basic connections of spectra to stability and instability are considered. In particular, a principle of linearized orbital instability for manifolds of equilibria is proven. Our goal…
Linear reaction-diffusion equations with inhomogeneous boundary and transmission conditions are shown to possess the property of maximal Lp regularity. The new feature is the fact that the transmission interface is allowed to intersect the boundary of the domain transversally.
In this article we study the Cauchy problem for a new class of parabolic-type pseudodifferential equations with variable coefficients for which the fundamental solutions are transition density functions of Markov processes in the four dimensional vector space over the field of p-adic numbers.
In this paper, we use duality arguments "à la Michel Pierre" to establish global existence of classic solutions for a class of parabolic reaction-diffusion systems modeling, for instance, the evolution of reversible chemical reactions.
We discuss a multiscale Galerkin approximation scheme for a system of coupled quasilinear parabolic equations. These equations arise from the upscaling of a pore scale filtration combustion model under the assumptions of large Damkhöler number and small Péclet number. The upscaled model consists of a heat diffusion equation and a mass diffusion equation in the bulk of a macroscopic domain. The associated diffusion tensors are bivariate functions of temperature and concentration and provide the necessary coupling conditions to elliptic-type cell problems. These cell problems are characterized b…
We derive some symmetrization and anti-symmetrization properties of parabolic equations. First, we deduce from a result by Jones a quantitative estimate of how far the level sets of solutions are from being spherical. Next, using this property, we derive a criterion providing solutions whose level sets do not converge to spheres for a class of equations including linear equations and Fisher-KPP reaction-diffusion equations.
This paper considers the inverse problem of recovering both the unknown, spatially-dependent conductivity $a(x)$ and the nonlinear reaction term $f(u)$ in a reaction-diffusion equation from overposed data. These measurements can consist of: the value of two different solution measurements taken at a later time $T$; time-trace profiles from two solutions; or both final time and time-trace measurements from a single forwards solve data run. We prove both uniqueness results and the convergence of iteration schemes designed to recover these coefficients. The last section of the paper shows numeric…
Global strong solutions for the triangular Shigesada-Kawasaki-Teramoto cross-diffusion system in three dimensions and parabolic regularisation for increasing functions
Reaction cross diffusion systems are a two species generalization of the porous media equation. These systems play an important role in the mechanical modeling of living tissues and tumor growth. Due to their mixed parabolic-hyperbolic structure, even proving the existence of solutions to these equations is challenging. In this paper, we exploit the parabolic structure of the system to prove the strong compactness of the pressure gradient in L2. The key ingredient is the energy dissipation relation, which along with some compensated compactness arguments, allows us to upgrade weak convergence …
