The theory of classical types of curves in normed planes is not strongly developed. In particular, the knowledge on existing concepts of curvatures of planar curves is widespread and not systematized in the literature. Giving a comprehensive overview on geometric properties of and relations between all introduced curvature concepts, we try to fill this gap. Certainly, this yields a basis for further research and also for possible extensions of the whole existing framework. In addition, we derive various new results referring in full broadness to the variety of known curvature types in normed planes. These new results involve characterizations of curves of constant curvature, new characterizations of Radon planes and the Euclidean subcase, and analogues to classical statements like the four vertex theorem and the fundamental theorem on planar curves. We also introduce a new curvature type, for which we verify corresponding properties. As applications of the little theory developed in our expository paper, we study the curvature behaviour of curves of constant width and obtain also new results on notions like evolutes, involutes, and parallel curves.
The normal map given by Birkhoff orthogonality yields extensions of principal, Gaussian and mean curvatures to surfaces immersed in three-dimensional spaces whose geometry is given by an arbitrary norm and which are also called Minkowski spaces. We obtain characterizations of the Minkowski Gaussian curvature in terms of surface areas, and respective generalizations of the classical theorems of Huber, Willmore, Alexandrov, and Bertrand-Diguet-Puiseux are derived. A generalization of Weyl's formula for the volume of tubes and some estimates for volumes and areas in terms of curvature are obtaine…
In this paper we study curvature types of immersed surfaces in three-dimensional (normed or) Minkowski spaces. By endowing the surface with a normal vector field, which is a transversal vector field given by the ambient Birkhoff orthogonality, we get an analogue of the Gauss map. Then we can define concepts of principal, Gaussian, and mean curvatures in terms of the eigenvalues of the differential of this map. Considering planar sections containing the normal field, we also define normal curvatures at each point of the surface, and with respect to each tangent direction. We investigate the rel…
In this paper results from the differential geometry of curves are extended from normed planes to gauge planes which are obtained by neglecting the symmetry axiom. Based on the gauge analogue of the notion of Birkhoff orthogonality from Banach space theory, we study all curvature types of curves in gauge planes, thus generalizing their complete classification for normed planes. We show that (as in the subcase of normed planes) there are four such types, and we call them analogously Minkowski, normal, circular, and arc-length curvature. We study relations between them and extend, based on this,…
The aim of this paper is to investigate the differential geometry of immersed surfaces in three-dimensional normed spaces from the viewpoint of affine differential geometry. We endow the surface with a useful Riemannian metric which is closely related to normal curvature, and from this we re-calculate the Minkowski Gaussian and mean curvatures. These curvatures are also re-obtained in terms of ambient affine distance functions, and as a consequence we characterize minimal surfaces as the solutions of a certain differential equation. We also investigate in which cases it is possible that the af…
Legendre curves are smooth plane curves which may have singular points, but still have a well defined smooth normal (and corresponding tangent) vector field. Because of the existence of singular points, the usual curvature concept for regular curves cannot be straightforwardly extended to these curves. However, Fukunaga, and Takahashi defined and studied functions that play the role of curvature functions of a Legendre curve, and whose ratio extend the curvature notion in the usual sense. Going into the same direction, our paper is devoted to the extension of the concept of circular curvature …
We study rotational surfaces with constant Minkowski Gaussian curvature and rotational surfaces with constant Minkowski mean curvature in a $3$-dimensional normed space with rotationally symmetric norm. We have a generalization of the catenoid, pseudo-sphere and Delaunay surfaces.
We extend to Minkowski spaces the classical result of Barbosa and do Carmo [1] that characterizes the euclidean sphere as the unique compact stable CMC hypersurface of $\mathbb R^n$. More precisely, if $K$ is a smooth convex body in $\mathbb R^n$ with positive Gauss curvature, containing the origin in its interior and $M$ is an immersed hypersurface, there are well defined concepts of surface area measure, normal vector field and principal curvatures of $M$ , with respect to $K$. Thus, we introduce the concept of stability with respect to normal variations and compute the formula of second var…
For a surface immersed in a three-dimensional space endowed with a norm instead of an inner product, one can define analogous concepts of curvature and metric. With these concepts in mind, various questions immediately appear. The aim of this paper is to propose and answer some of those questions. In this framework we prove several characterizations of minimal surfaces, and analogues of some global theorems (e.g., Hadamard-type theorems) are also derived. A result on the curvature of surfaces of constant Minkowski width is also given. Finally, we study the ambient metric induced on the surface…
Given a normed plane $\mathcal{P}$, we call $\mathcal{P}$-cycloids the planar curves which are homothetic to their double $\mathcal{P}$-evolutes. It turns out that the radius of curvature and the support function of a $\mathcal{P}$-cycloid satisfy a differential equation of Sturm-Liouville type. By studying this equation we can describe all closed hypocycloids and epicycloids with a given number of cusps. We can also find an orthonormal basis of ${\mathcal C}^0(S^1)$ with a natural decomposition into symmetric and anti-symmetric functions, which are support functions of symmetric and constant …
We introduce the concept of singular values for the Riemann curvature tensor, a central mathematical tool in Einstein's theory of general relativity. We study the properties related to the singular values, and investigate five typical cases to show its relationship to the Ricci scalar and other invariants.
We extend the concept of singular Ricci flow by Kleiner and Lott from 3d compact manifolds to 3d complete manifolds with possibly unbounded curvature. As an application of the generalized singular Ricci flow, we show that for any 3d complete Riemannian manifold with non-negative Ricci curvature, there exists a smooth Ricci flow starting from it.
Lutwak, Yang and Zhang [23] introduced the concept of Lp dual curvature measure for convex bodies and star bodies, and studied the Minkowski problem. We in this paper establish a new unified concept, in briefly, the (p,q)-mixed quermassintegrals, via (p,q)-dual mixed curvature measure, and further have a deep discussion on Minkowski problem with respect to the (p,q)-dual mixed curvature measure. By the way, we derive at some important properties and geometric inequalities for (p,q)-mixed quermassintegrals.
In this paper we introduce a Guan-Li type volume preserving mean curvature flow for free boundary hypersurfaces in a ball. We give a concept of star-shaped free boundary hypersurfaces in a ball and show that the Guan-Li type mean curvature flow has long time existence and converges to a free boundary spherical cap, provided the initial data is star-shaped.
We propose a new weak solution concept for (two-phase) mean curvature flow which enjoys both (unconditional) existence and (weak-strong) uniqueness properties. These solutions are evolving varifolds, just as in Brakke's formulation, but are coupled to the phase volumes by a simple transport equation. First, we show that, in the exact same setup as in Ilmanen's proof [J. Differential Geom. 38, 417-461, (1993)], any limit point of solutions to the Allen-Cahn equation is a varifold solution in our sense. Second, we prove that any calibrated flow in the sense of Fischer et al. [arXiv:2003.05478] -…
In this paper, we consider different types of non-positive curvature properties of the Hilbert metric of a convex domain in R^n. First, we survey the relationships among the concepts and prove that in the case of Hilbert metric some of them are equivalent. Furthermore, we show some condition which implies the rigidity feature: if the Hilbert metric is Berwald, i.e., its Finslerian Chern connection reduces to a linear one, then the domain is an ellipsoid and the metric is Riemannian.
In this paper, the concept of isotropic projective Ricci curvature has been investigated. By classification of Randers metric of isotropic projective Ricci curvature, it is shown that Randers metric of projective Ricci curvature is reversible if and only if it is of square projective Ricci curvature.
We survey - by means of 20 examples - the concept of varifold, as generalised submanifold, with emphasis on regularity of integral varifolds with mean curvature, while keeping prerequisites to a minimum. Integral varifolds are the natural language for studying the variational theory of the area integrand if one considers, for instance, existence or regularity of stationary (or, stable) surfaces of dimension at least three, or the limiting behaviour of sequences of smooth submanifolds under area and mean curvature bounds.
This paper deals with the concept of curvature of framed space curves, their higher-order derivatives, variations, and co-rotational derivatives. We realize that parametrizing rotation tensor using the Gibbs vector is effective in deriving a closed form formula to obtain any order derivative of the curvature tensor as the summation of functions of the parametrizing quantity and its derivatives. We use these results for formulating a linearized updating algorithm for curvature and its derivatives when the configuration of the curve acquires a small increment. Finally, the MATLAB code to obtain …
This article introduces a new approach to discrete curvature based on the concept of effective resistances. We propose a curvature on the nodes and links of a graph and present the evidence for their interpretation as a curvature. Notably, we find a relation to a number of well-established discrete curvatures (Ollivier, Forman, combinatorial curvature) and show evidence for convergence to continuous curvature in the case of Euclidean random graphs. Being both efficient to calculate and highly amenable to theoretical analysis, these resistance curvatures have the potential to shed new light on …
