The existence of GHZ contradictions in many-qutrit systems was a long-standing theoretical question until it's (affirmative) resolution in 2013. To enable experimental tests, we derive Mermin inequalities from concurrent observable sets identified in those proofs. These employ a weighted sum of observables, called M, in which every term has the chosen GHZ state as an eigenstate with eigenvalue unity. The quantum prediction for M is then just the number of concurrent observables, and this grows asymptotically as 2^N/3 as the number of qutrits (N) goes to infinity. The maximum classical value falls short for every N, so that the quantum to classical ratio (starting at 1.5 when N=3), diverges exponentially (~ 1.064^N) as N goes to infinity, where the system is in a Schroedinger cat-like superposition of three macroscopically distinct states.
Mermin inequalities are derived for systems of three-state particles (qutrits) employing three local measurement settings. These establish perfect correlations which violate local realistic bounds more strongly than those previously reported with two bases. The quantum eigenvalue of the Mermin operator grows as the dimension of the Hilbert space, $3^N$, rather than $2^N$, as obtained with two measurement bases. The number of distinct GHZ contradictions also increases as $3^N$.
In this paper, it is proved that the maximal violation of Mermin's inequalities of $n$ qubits occurs only for GHZ's states and the states obtained from them by local unitary transformations. The key point of our argument involved here is by using the certain algebraic properties that Pauli's matrices satisfy, which is based on the determination of local spin observables of the associated Bell-Mermin operators.
The necessary and sufficient criteria for violating the Mermin and Svetlichny inequalities by arbitrary three-qubit states are presented. Several attempts have been made, earlier, to find such criteria, however, those extant criteria are neither tight for most of the instances, nor fully general. We generalize the existing criteria for Mermin and Svetlichny inequalities which are valid for the local projective measurement observables as well as for the arbitrary ones. We obtain the maximal achievable bounds of the Mermin and Svetlichny operators with unbiased measurement observables for arbitr…
Mermin states that his nontechnical version of Bell's theorem stands and is not invalidated by time and setting dependent instrument parameters as claimed in one of our previous papers. We identify deviations from well-established protocol in probability theory as well as mathematical contradictions in Mermin's argument and show that Mermin's conclusions are therefore not valid: his proof does not go forward if certain possible time dependencies are taken into account.
Violation of Mermin's and Svetlichny's inequalities can rule out the predictions of local hidden variable theory and can confirm the existence of true nonlocal correlation for n-particle pure quantum systems. Here we demonstrate the experimental violation of the above inequalities for W- and GHZ-class of states. We use IBM's five-qubit quantum computer for experimental implementation of these states and illustration of inequalities' violations. Our results clearly show the violations of both Mermin's and Svetlichny's inequalities for W and GHZ states respectively. Being a superconducting qubit…
Any n-qubit state with n independent perfect correlations is equivalent to a graph state. We present the optimal Bell inequalities for perfect correlations and maximal violation for all classes of graph states with n < 7 qubits. Twelve of them were previously unknown and four give the same violation as the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger state, although the corresponding states are more resistant to decoherence.
We prove that the threshold detection efficiency for a loophole-free Bell experiment using an $n$-qubit Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger state and the correlations appearing in the $n$-partite Mermin inequality is $n/(2n-2)$. If the detection efficiency is equal to or lower than this value, there are local hidden variable models that can simulate all the quantum predictions. If the detection efficiency is above this value, there is no local hidden variable model that can simulate all the quantum predictions.
One of the interesting topics in quantum contextuality is the construction for various non-contextual inequalities. By introducing a new structure called hyper-graph, we present a general method, which seems to be analytic and extensible, to derive the non-contextual inequalities for the qutrit systems. Based on this, several typical families of non-contextual inequalities are discussed. And our approach may also help us to simplify some state-independent proofs for quantum contextuality in one of our recent works.
It is well known that Bell inequality supporting the local realism can be violated in quantum mechanics. Numerous tests of such a violation have been demonstrated with bipartite entanglements. Using spectral jointmeasurements of the qubits, we here propose a scheme to test the tripartite Mermin inequality (a three-qubit Bell-type inequality) with three qubits dispersively-coupled to a driven cavity. First, we show how to generate a three-qubit Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) state by only one-step quantum operation. Then, spectral joint-measurements are introduced to directly confirm such a …
We introduce a new method of investigating qutrit nonclassicality by translating qutrit operators to symmetric two-qubit operators. We show that this procedure partially resolves the discrepancy between maximal qutrit entanglement and maximal nonclassicality of qutrit correlations. Namely we express Bell operators corresponding to qutrit Bell inequalities in terms of symmetric two-qubit operators, and analyze the maximal quantum violation of a given Bell inequality from the qubit perspective. As an example we show that the two-qutrit CGLMP(Collins-Gisin-Linden-Massar-Popescu) Bell inequality c…
The notion of weighted quantum entropy is reviewed and considered for bipartite and noncomposite quantum systems. The known for the weighted entropy information inequality (subadditivity condition) is extended to the case of indivisible qudit system on example of qutrit. This new inequality for qutrit density matrix is discussed for different cases of weights and states. The role of weighted entropy is discussed in connection with studies of nonlinear quantum channels.
The tomographic method is employed to investigate the presence of quantum correlations in two classes of parameter-dependent states of two qutrits. The violation of some Bell's inequalities in a wide domain of the parameter space is shown. A comparison between the tomographic approach and a recent method elaborated by Wu, Poulsen and Molmer shows the better adequacy of the former method with respect to the latter one.
Violation of Mermin inequalities is tested on the 5-qubit IBM quantum computer. For 3, 4 and 5 parties, quantum states that violate the corresponding Mermin inequalities are constructed using quantum circuits on superconducting qubits. Measurements on different basis are included as additional final gates in the circuits. The experimental results obtained using the quantum computer show violation of all Mermin inequalitites, with a clear degradation of the results in the 5 qubit case. Though this quantum computer is not competitive to test Mermin inequalities as compared to other techniques wh…
Distinct from the type of local realist inequality (known as the Collins-Gisin-Linden-Massar-Popescu or CGLMP inequality) usually used for bipartite qutrit systems, we formulate a new set of local realist inequalities for bipartite qutrits by generalizing Wigner's argument that was originally formulated for the bipartite qubit singlet state. This treatment assumes existence of the overall joint probability distributions in the underlying stochastic hidden variable space for the measurement outcomes pertaining to the relevant trichotomic observables, satisfying the locality condition and yieldi…
Bell inequalities can be studied both as constraints in the space of probability distributions and as expectation values of multipartite operators. The latter approach is particularly useful when considering outcomes as eigenvalues of unitary operators. This brings the possibility of exploiting the complex structure of the coefficients in the Bell operators. We investigate this avenue of though in the known case of two outcomes, and find new Bell inequalities for the cases of three outcomes and $n=3,4,5$ and $6$ parties. We find their corresponding classical bounds and their maximum violation …
In the celebrated paper [J. Phys. A: Math. Gen. 37, 1775 (2004)], D. Collins and N. Gisin presented for the first time a three setting Bell inequality (here we call it CG inequality for simplicity) which is relevant to the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt (CHSH) inequality. Inspired by their brilliant ideas, we obtained some multi-setting tight Bell inequalities, which are relevant to the CHSH inequality and the CG inequality. Moreover, we generalized the method in the paper [Phys.Rev. A 79, 012115 (2009)] to construct Bell inequality for qubits to higher dimensional system. Based on the generalized…
It has been argued that any test of quantum contextuality is nullified by the fact that perfect orthogonality and perfect compatibility cannot be achieved in finite precision experiments. We introduce experimentally testable two-qutrit violations of inequalities for noncontextual theories in which compatibility is guaranteed by the fact that measurements are performed on separated qutrits. The inequalities are inspired by the basic building block of the Kochen-Specker proof of quantum contextuality for a qutrit, despite the fact that their proof is completely independent of it.
When a measurement is compatible with each of two other measurements that are incompatible with one another, these define distinct contexts for the given measurement. The Kochen-Specker theorem rules out models of quantum theory that satisfy a particular assumption of context-independence: that sharp measurements are assigned outcomes both deterministically and independently of their context. This notion of noncontextuality is not suited to a direct experimental test because realistic measurements always have some degree of unsharpness due to noise. However, a generalized notion of noncontextu…
We present a necessary and sufficient condition for three qutrit density matrices to be the one-particle reduced density matrices of a pure three-qutrit quantum state. The condition consists of seven classes of inequalities satisfied by the eigenvalues of these matrices. One of them is a generalization of a known inequality for the qubit case. Some of these inequalities are proved algebraically whereas the proof of the others uses the fact that a continuous function of the state must have a minimum. Construction of states satisfying these inequalities relies on a representation of the convex s…
New inequalities for tomographic probability distributions and density matrices of qutrit states are obtained by means of generalization of qubit portrait method. The approach based on the qudit portrait method to get new entropic inequalities is proposed. It can be applied to the case of arbutrary nonnegative hermitian matrices including the density matrices of multipartite qudit states.
We experimentally test quantum contextuality of a single qutrit using NMR. The contextuality inequalities based on nine observables developed by Kurzynski et. al. are first reformulated in terms of traceless observables which can be measured in an NMR experiment. These inequalities reveal the contextuality of almost all single-qutrit states. We demonstrate the violation of the inequality on four different initial states of a spin-1 deuterium nucleus oriented in a liquid crystal matrix, and follow the violation as the states evolve in time. We also describe and experimentally perform a single-s…
We numerically investigate entropic Bell inequalities for a pair of entangled qutrits using information-theoretic distances. We show that for this class of inequalities Tsallis entropy is more suitable than Shannon as it reveals non-classicality for a larger set of quantum states. Finally, we find that like probability based inequalities, entropic ones are maximally violated by the non-maximally entangled qutrit state.
Self-testing refers to the phenomenon that certain extremal quantum correlations (almost) uniquely identify the quantum system under consideration. For instance observing the maximal violation of the CHSH inequality certifies that the two parties share a singlet. While self-testing results are known for several classes of states, in many cases they are only applicable if the observed statistics are almost perfect, which makes them unsuitable for practical applications. Practically relevant self-testing bounds are much less common and moreover they all result from a single numerical method (wit…

Entanglement properties of IBM Q 53 qubit quantum computer are carefully examined with the noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) technology. We study GHZ-like states with multiple qubits (N=2 to N=7) on IBM Rochester and compare their maximal violation values of Mermin polynomials with analytic results. A rule of N-qubits orthogonal measurements is taken to further justify the entanglement less than maximal values of local realism (LR). The orthogonality of measurements is another reliable criterion for entanglement except the maximal values of LR. Our results indicate that the entanglement …
We have recently shown that for the special case of a bipartite system with binary inputs and outputs there exist equalities in local theories which are violated by quantum theory. The amount of white noise tolerated by these equalities are twice that of inequalities. In this paper we will first introduce an inequality in bipartite qutrits systems which, if non-maximally entangled state is used instead of maximally entangled state, is violated more strongly by quantum theory. Hence reproducing the results obtained in the literature. We will then prove that our equalities in this case are viola…
Recent experiments have demonstrated ququart state-independent quantum contextuality and qutrit state-dependent quantum contextuality. So far, the most basic form of quantum contextuality pointed out by Kochen and Specker, and Bell, has eluded experimental confirmation. Here we present an experimentally feasible test to observe qutrit state-independent quantum contextuality using single photons in a three-path setup. In addition, we show that if the same measurements are performed on two entangled qutrits, rather than sequentially on the same qutrit, then the noncontextual inequality becomes a…
We derive Bell inequalities for graph states by generalizing the approach proposed by Ardehali [Phys. Rev. A 46, 5375 (1992)] for Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) states. Using this method, we demonstrate that Bell inequalities with nonstabilizer observables are often superior to the optimal GHZ-Mermin-type (or stabilizer-type) Bell inequalities.
Using the monotonity of relative entropy of composite quantum systems we obtain new entropic inequalities for arbitrary density matrices of single qudit states. Example of qutrit state inequalities and the "qubit portrait" bound for the distance between the qutrit states are considered in explicit form.
Euclidean volume ratios between quantum states with positive partial transpose and all quantum states in bipartite systems are investigated. These ratios allow a quantitative exploration of the typicality of entanglement and of its detectability by Bell inequalities. For this purpose a new numerical approach is developed. It is based on the Peres-Horodecki criterion, on a characterization of the convex set of quantum states by inequalities resulting from Newton identities and from Descartes' rule of signs, and on a numerical approach involving the multiphase Monte Carlo method and the hit-and-…
We present a generalized quantum scattering circuit which can be used to perform non-invasive quantum measurements, and implement it on NMR qubits. Such a measurement is a key requirement for testing temporal non-contextual inequalities. We use this circuit to experimentally demonstrate the violation of the Peres-Mermin inequality (which is the temporal analog of a Klyachko-Can- Binicioglu-Shumovsky (KCBS) inequality), on a three-qubit NMR quantum information processor. Further, we experimentally demonstrate the violation of a transformed Bell-type inequality (the spatial equivalent of the tem…
We express the matrix elements of the density matrix of the qutrit state in terms of probabilities associated with artificial qubit states. We show that the quantum statistics of qubit states and observables is formally equivalent to the statistics of classical systems with three random vector variables and three classical probability distributions obeying special constrains found in this study. The Bloch spheres geometry of qubit states is mapped onto triangle geometry of qubits. We investigate the triada of Malevich's squares describing the qubit states in quantum suprematism picture and the…
It is shown that the entanglement-structure of 3- and 4-qubit states can be characterized by optimized operators of the Mermin-Klyshko type. It is possible to discriminate between pure 2-qubit entanglements and higher entanglements. A comparison with a global entanglement measure and the i-concurrence is made.
Based on Clauser-Horner-Shimony-Holt inequality, we show a fruitful method to exploit Bell inequalities for multipartite qubit systems. These Bell inequalities are designed with a simpler architecture tailored to experimental demonstration. Under the optimal setting we derive a set of compact Mermin-type inequalities and discuss quantum violations for generalized Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GGHZ) states. Also, we reveal relationship between quantum nonlocality and four-partite entanglement for four-qubit GGHZ states.
Bell inequalities are an important tool in device-independent quantum information processing because their violation can serve as a certificate of relevant quantum properties. Probably the best known example of a Bell inequality is due to Clauser, Horne, Shimony and Holt (CHSH), which is defined in the simplest scenario involving two dichotomic measurements and whose all key properties are well understood. There have been many attempts to generalise the CHSH Bell inequality to higher-dimensional quantum systems, however, for most of them the maximal quantum violation---the key quantity for mos…
We present a crytographic protocol based upon entangled qutrit pairs. We analyse the scheme under a symmetric incoherent attack and plot the region for which the protocol is secure and compare this with the region of violations of certain Bell inequalities.
We present a study of quantum contextuality of three-dimensional mixed states for the Klyachko-Can-Binicioğlu-Shumovsky (KCBS) and the Kurzyński-Kaszlikowski (KK) noncontextuality inequalities. For any class of states whose eigenvalues are arranged in decreasing order, a universal set of measurements always exists for the KK inequality, whereas none does for the KCBS inequality. This difference can be reflected from the spectral distribution of the overall measurement matrix. Our results would facilitate the error analysis for experimental setups, and our spectral method in the paper combined …
Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger states are intuitively known to be the most non-classical ones. They lead to the most radically nonclassical behavior of three or more entangled quantum subsystems. However, in case of two-dimensional systems, it has been shown that GHZ states lead to more robustness of Bell nonclassicality in case of geometrical inequalities than in case of Mermin inequalities. We investigate various strategies of constructing geometrical Bell inequalities (BIs) for GHZ states for any dimensionality of subsystems.
Any pure entangled state of two particles violates a Bell inequality for two-particle correlation functions (Gisin's theorem). We show that there exist pure entangled N>2 qubit states that do not violate any Bell inequality for N particle correlation functions for experiments involving two dichotomic observables per local measuring station. We also find that Mermin-Ardehali-Belinskii-Klyshko inequalities may not always be optimal for refutation of local realistic description.
The question concerning the physical realizability of a probability distribution is of quite importance in Quantum foundations. Specker first pointed out that this question cannot be answered from Kolmogorov's axioms alone. Lately, this observation of Specker has motivated simple principles (exclusivity principle/ local orthogonality principle) that can explain quantum limit regarding the possible sets of experimental probabilities in various nonlocality and contextuality experiments. We study Specker's observation in the simplest scenario involving three inputs each with two outputs. Then usi…
The tomographic approach to quantum mechanics is revisited as a direct tool to investigate violation of Bell-like inequalities. Since quantum tomograms are well defined probability distributions, the tomographic approach is emphasized to be the most natural one to compare the predictions of classical and quantum theory. Examples of inequalities for two qubits an two qutrits are considered in the tomographic probability representation of spin states.
In this paper we show a Clauser-Horne (CH) inequality for two three-level quantum systems or qutrits, alternative to the CH inequality given by Kaszlikowski et al. [PRA 65, 032118 (2002)]. In contrast to this latter CH inequality, the new one is shown to be equivalent to the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt (CHSH) inequality for two qutrits given by Collins et al. [PRL 88, 040404 (2002)]. Both the CH and CHSH inequalities exhibit the strongest resistance to noise for a nonmaximally entangled state for the case of two von Neumann measurements per site, as first shown by Acin et al. [PRA 65, 052325 (2…
We present a family of Bell inequalities for three parties and arbitrarily many outcomes, which can be seen as a natural generalization of the Mermin Bell inequality. For a small number of outcomes, we verify that our inequalities define facets of the polytope of local correlations. We investigate the quantum violations of these inequalities, in particular with respect to the Hilbert space dimension. We provide strong evidence that the maximal quantum violation can only be reached using systems with local Hilbert space dimension exceeding the number of measurement outcomes. This suggests that …
We experimentally observed state-independent violations of Kochen-Specker inequalities for the simplest indivisible quantum system manifesting quantum contextuality, a three-level (qutrit) system. We performed the experiment with a single trapped ^{171}Yb^{+} ion, by mapping three ground states of the ^{171}Yb^{+} ion to a qutrit system and carrying out quantum operatations by applying microwaves resonant to the qutrit transition frequencies. Our results are free from the detection loophole and cannot be explained by the non-contextual hidden variable models.
We provide a novel criterion for identifying quantum correlation, which allows us to find connections between Bell type inequalities, entanglement detection, and correlation. We utilize the criterion to construct witness operators that can detect genuine multi-qubit entanglement with fewer local measurements. The connection between identifications of quantum correlation and Mermin's inequality is discussed. Detection of genuine four-level tripartite entanglement with two local measurement settings is shown in the same manner. Further, through the criterion of quantum correlation, we derive a n…
Quantum state targeting is a quantum game which results from combining traditional quantum state estimation with additional classical information. We consider a particular version of the game and show how it can be played with maximally entangled states. The optimal solution of the game is used to derive a Bell inequality for two entangled qutrits. We argue that the nice properties of the inequality are direct consequences of the method of construction.
The machinery of qubit-portraits of qudit states, recently presented, is consider here in more details in order to characterize the presence of quantum correlations in bipartite qudit states. In the tomographic representation of quantum mechanics, Bell-like inequalities are interpreted as peculiar properties of a family of classical joint probability distributions which describe the quantum state of two qudits. By means of the qubit-portraits machinery a semigroup of stochastic matrices can be associated to a given quantum state. The violation of the CHSH inequalities is discussed in this fram…
A method to establish a qubit decomposition of a general qudit state is presented. This new representation allows a geometrical depiction of any qudit state in the Bloch sphere. Additionally, we show that the nonnegativity conditions of the qudit state imply the existence of quantum correlations between the qubits which compose it. These correlations are used to define new inequalities which the density matrices components must satisfy. The importance of such inequalities in the reconstruction of a qudit state is addressed. As an example of the general procedure the qubit decomposition of a qu…
