Let ${\mathcal G}$ be a locally compact group. In continuation of our studies on the first and second duals of measure algebras by the use of the theory of generalised functions, here we study the C$^*$-subalgebra $GL_0({\mathcal G})$ of $GL({\mathcal G})$ as an introverted subspace of $M({\mathcal G})^*$. In the case where ${\mathcal G}$ is non-compact we show that any topological left invariant mean on $GL({\mathcal G})$ lies in $GL_0({\mathcal G})^\perp$. We then endow $GL_0({\mathcal G})^*$ with an Arens-type product which contains $M({\mathcal G})$ as a closed subalgebra and $M_a({\mathcal G})$ as a closed ideal which is a solid set with respect to absolute continuity in $GL_0({\mathcal G})^*$. Among other things, we prove that ${\mathcal G}$ is compact if and only if $GL_0({\mathcal G})^*$ has a non-zero left (weakly) completely continuous element.
Given a Banach space X and a subspace Y, the pair (X,Y) is said to have the approximation property (AP) provided there is a net of finite rank bounded linear operators on X all of which leave the subspace Y invariant such that the net converges uniformly on compact subsets of X to the identity operator. The main result is an easy to apply dual formulation of this property. Applications are given to three space properties; in particular, if X has the approximation property and its subspace Y is script L-infinity, then X/Y has the approximation property.
Let $E$ be a Lebesgue measurable subset of ${\mathbb R}^n$, $p\in [1,\infty)$. We consider the subspace $Y\subset L^p(E)$, which is an annihilator of the Lebesgue measurable ${{\cal L}^{n}}$-a.e. finite function $g$ that does not belong to the dual space of $L^p(E)$. It is shown that the subspace $Y$ is dense in $L^p(E)$. Moreover, the Hahn-Banach theorem's extension $\bar T_g\in [L^p(E)]^*$ of the bounded on $Y$ functional $h\mapsto \int_E g(x)h(x)\,dx$, $h\in Y$, can not be represented in the form $\bar T_g(h)= \int_E g(x)h(x)\,dx$, $h\in L^p(E)$.
In this article, we analyse the structure of finite dimensional subspaces of the set of points of strong subdifferentiability in a dual space. In a dual $L_1(μ)$ space, such a subspace is in the discrete part of the Yoshida-Hewitt type decomposition. In this set up, any Banach space consisting of points of strong subdifferentiability is necessarily finite dimensional. Our results also lead to streamlined and new proofs of results from the study of strong proximinality for subspaces of finite co-dimension in a Banach space.
A new method of defining hereditarily indecomposable Banach spaces is presented. This method provides a unified approach for constructing reflexive HI spaces and also HI spaces with no reflexive subspace. All the spaces presented here satisfy the property that the composition of any two strictly singular operators is a compact one. This yields the first known example of a Banach space with no reflexive subspace such that every operator has a non-trivial closed invariant subspace.
A topological space is said to be sequential if every sequentially closed subspace is closed. We consider Banach spaces with weak*-sequential dual ball. In particular, we show that if $X$ is a Banach space with weak*-sequentially compact dual ball and $Y \subset X$ is a subspace such that $Y$ and $X/Y$ have weak*-sequential dual ball, then $X$ has weak*-sequential dual ball. As an application we obtain that the Johnson-Lindenstrauss space $JL_2$ and $C(K)$ for $K$ scattered compact space of countable height are examples of Banach spaces with weak*-sequential dual ball, answering in this way a …
We study subspace concentration of dual curvature measures of convex bodies $K$ satisfying $γ(-K)\subseteq K$ for some $γ\in (0,1]$. We present upper bounds on the subspace concentration depending on $γ$, which, in particular, retrieves the known results in the symmetric setting. The proof is based on a unified approach to prove necessary subspace concentration conditions via the divergence theorem.
We prove tight subspace concentration inequalities for the dual curvature measures $\widetilde{\mathrm{C}}_q(K,\cdot)$ of an $n$-dimensional origin-symmetric convex body for $q\geq n+1$. This supplements former results obtained in the range $q\leq n$.
Extensions of dual definite subspaces to dual maximal definite ones are described. The concepts of dual quasi maximal subspaces and quasi basis are introduced and studied. The obtained results are applied to the classification of C-symmetries.
In this paper a sampling theory for unitary invariant subspaces associated to locally compact abelian (LCA) groups is deduced. Working in the LCA group context allows to obtain, in a unified way, sampling results valid for a wide range of problems which are interesting in practice, avoiding also cumbersome notation. Along with LCA groups theory, the involved mathematical technique is that of frame theory which meets matrix analysis when appropriate dual frames are computed.
Let $X$ be a Banach space. Then $X$ is complemented in the bidual $X^{**}$ if and only if there exists an invariant mean $\ell_\infty(G, X)\to X$ with respect to a free Abelian group $G$ of rank equal to the cardinality of $X^{**}$, and this happens if and only if there exists an invariant mean with respect to the additive group of $X^{**}$. This improves upon previous results due to Bustos Domecq =and the second-named author, where certain idempotent semigroups of cardinality equal to the cardinality of $X^{**}$ were considered, and answers a question of J.M.F. Castillo (private communication…
We study geometric properties of the Banach space $\mathcal{R}$ constructed recently by C.~Read (arXiv 1307.7958) which does not contain proximinal subspaces of finite codimension greater than or equal to two. Concretely, we show that the bidual of $\mathcal{R}$ is strictly convex, that the norm of the dual of $\mathcal{R}$ is rough, and that $\mathcal{R}$ is weakly locally uniformly rotund (but it is not locally uniformly rotund). Apart of the own interest of the results, they provide a simplification of the proof by M.~Rmoutil (J.\ Funct.\ Anal.\ 272 (2017), 918--928) that the set of norm-at…
Given a Banach space $E$, we ask which closed subspaces may be realised as the kernel of a bounded operator $E \rightarrow E$. We prove some positive results which imply in particular that when $E$ is separable every closed subspace is a kernel. Moreover, we show that there exists a Banach space $E$ which contains a closed subspace that cannot be realized as the kernel of any bounded operator on $E$. This implies that the Banach algebra $\mathcal{B}(E)$ of bounded operators on $E$ fails to be weak*-topologically left Noetherian. The Banach space $E$ that we use is the dual of Wark's non-separa…
We introduce and study multivariate generalizations of the classical BV spaces of Jordan, F. Riesz and Wiener. The family of the introduced spaces contains or is intimately related to a considerable class of function spaces of modern analysis including BMO, BV, Morrey spaces and those of Sobolev of arbitrary smoothness, Besov and Triebel-Lizorkin spaces. We prove under mild restrictions that the BV spaces of this family are dual and present constructive characterizations of their preduals via atomic decompositions. Moreover, we show that under additional restrictions such a predual space is is…
We show that the space $\text{Lip}_0(\mathbb R^n)$ is the dual space of $L^{1}({\mathbb R}^{n}; {\mathbb R}^{n})/N$ where $N$ is the subspace of $L^{1}({\mathbb R}^{n}; {\mathbb R}^{n})$ consisting of vector fields whose divergence vanishes. We prove that although the quotient space $L^{1}({\mathbb R}^{n}; {\mathbb R}^{n})/N$ is weakly sequentially complete, the subspace $N$ is not nicely placed - in other words, its unit ball is not closed for the topology $τ_m$ of local convergence in measure. We prove that if $Ω$ is a bounded open star-shaped subset of $\mathbb {R}^n$ and $X$ is a closed su…
It was shown by G. Pisier that any finite-dimensional normed space admits an $α$-regular $M$-position, guaranteeing not only regular entropy estimates but moreover regular estimates on the diameters of minimal sections of its unit-ball and its dual. We revisit Pisier's argument and show the existence of a \emph{different} position, which guarantees the same estimates for \emph{randomly sampled} sections \emph{with high-probability}. As an application, we obtain a \emph{random} version of V. Milman's Quotient-of-Subspace Theorem, asserting that in the above position, \emph{typical} quotients of…
In this paper, we introduce a generalization of the Wasserstein barycenter, to a case where the initial probability measures live on different subspaces of R^d. We study the existence and uniqueness of this barycenter, we show how it is related to a larger multi-marginal optimal transport problem, and we propose a dual formulation. Finally, we explain how to compute numerically this generalized barycenter on discrete distributions, and we propose an explicit solution for Gaussian distributions.
Let G be a finite abelian group. We examine the discrepancy between subspaces of l^2(G) which are diagonalized in the standard basis and subspaces which are diagonalized in the dual Fourier basis. The general principle is that a Fourier subspace whose dimension is small compared to |G| = dim(l^2(G)) tends to be far away from standard subspaces. In particular, the recent positive solution of the Kadison-Singer problem shows that from within any Fourier subspace whose dimension is small compared to |G| there is standard subspace which is essentially indistinguishable from its orthogonal compleme…
The paper presents a general duality theory for vector measure spaces taking its origin in the author's papers written in the 1960s. The main result establishes a direct correspondence between the geometry of a measure in a vector space and the properties of the space of measurable linear functionals on this space regarded as closed subspaces of an abstract space of measurable functions. An example of useful new features of this theory is the notion of a free measure and its applications.
