Let $X$ be a Banach space. Then $X$ is complemented in the bidual $X^{**}$ if and only if there exists an invariant mean $\ell_\infty(G, X)\to X$ with respect to a free Abelian group $G$ of rank equal to the cardinality of $X^{**}$, and this happens if and only if there exists an invariant mean with respect to the additive group of $X^{**}$. This improves upon previous results due to Bustos Domecq =and the second-named author, where certain idempotent semigroups of cardinality equal to the cardinality of $X^{**}$ were considered, and answers a question of J.M.F. Castillo (private communication). En route to the proof of the main result, we endow the family of all finite-dimensional subspaces of an infinite-dimensional vector space with a structure of a free commutative monoid with the property that the product of two subspaces contains the respective subspaces, which is possibly of interest in itself.
We provide a sufficient condition for the sum of a finite number of complemented subspaces of a Banach space to be complemented. Under this condition a formula for a projection onto the sum is given. We also show that the condition is sharp (in a certain sense). As applications, we get (1) sufficient conditions for the complementability of sums of marginal subspaces in $L^p$ and sums of tensor powers of subspaces in a tensor power of a Banach space and (2) quantitative results on stability of the complementability property of the sum of linearly independent subspaces.
In this paper, we introduce and study the concept of L-Dunford-Pettis sets and L-Dunford-Pettis property in Banach spaces. Next, we give a characterization of the L-Dunford-Pettis property with respect to some well-known geometric properties of Banach spaces. Finally, some complementability of operators on Banach spaces with the L-Dunford-Pettis property are also investigated
Using elementary probabilistic methods, in particular a variant of the Weak Law of Large Numbers related to the Bernoulli distribution, we prove that for every infinite compact spaces $K$ and $L$ the product $K\times L$ admits a sequence $\langleμ_n\colon n\in\mathbb{N}\rangle$ of normalized signed measures with finite supports which converges to $0$ with respect to the weak* topology of the dual Banach space $C(K\times L)^*$. Our approach is completely constructive -- the measures $μ_n$ are defined by an explicit simple formula. We also show that this result generalizes the classical theorem …
In our note we show the very close connection between the existence of a Finite Dimensional Decomposition (FDD for short) for a separable Banach space $X$ and the existence of a Lipschitz retraction of $X$ onto a small (in a certain precise sense) generating convex and compact subset $K$ of $X$. In one direction, if $X$ admits an FDD then we construct a Lipschitz retraction onto a small generating convex and compact set $K$. On the other hand, we prove that if $X$ admits a small generating compact Lipschitz retract then $X$ has the $π$-property. We note that it is still unknown if the $π$-prop…
We introduce new quasi-Banach modulation spaces on locally compact abelian (LCA) groups which coincide with the classical ones in the Banach setting and prove their main properties. Then we study Gabor frames on quasi-lattices, significantly extending the original theory introduced by Gröchenig and Strohmer. These issues are the key tools in showing boundedness results for Kohn-Nirenberg and localization operators on modulation spaces and studying their eigenfunctions' properties. In particular, the results in the Euclidean space are recaptured.
We consider Fourier transform of vector-valued functions on a locally compact group $G$, which take value in a Banach space $X$, and are square-integrable in Bochner sense. If $G$ is a finite group then Fourier transform is a bounded operator. If $G$ is an infinite group then Fourier transform $F: L_2(G,X)\to L_2(\widehat G,X)$ is a bounded operator if and only if Banach space $X$ is isomorphic to a Hilbert one.
We produce several situations where some natural subspaces of classical Banach spaces of functions over a compact abelian group contain the space $c_0$.
We exhibit abelian topological groups admitting no nontrivial strongly continuous irreducible representations in Banach spaces. Among them are some abelian Banach-Lie groups and some monothetic subgroups of the unitary group of a separable Hilbert space.
What has category theory to offer to Banach spacers? In this second part survey-like paper we will focus on very much needed advanced categorical and homological elements, such as Kan extensions, derived category and derived functor or Abelian hearts of Banach spaces.
Recent developments in Banach space theory provided unexpected examples of unital Banach algebras that are isomorphic to Calkin algebras of Banach spaces, however no example of a unital Banach algebra that cannot be realised as a~Calkin algebra has been found so far. This naturally led to the question of possible limitations of such assignments. In the present note we provide examples of unital Banach algebras meeting the necessary density condition for being the Calkin algebra of a separable Banach space that are not isomorphic to Calkin algebras of such spaces, nonetheless. The examples may …
Let G be a locally compact abelian group and let μbe a complex valued regular Borel measure on G. In this paper we consider a generalisation of a class of Banach lattices introduced in [6]. We use Laplace transform methods to show that the norm of a convolution operator with symbol μon such a space is bounded below by the L_\infty norm of the Fourier-Stieltjes transform of μ. We also show that for any Banach lattice of locally integrable functions on G with a shift-invariant norm, the norm of a convolution operator with symbol μis bounded above by the total variation of μ.
Harmonic Hilbert spaces on locally compact abelian groups are reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces (RKHSs) of continuous functions constructed by Fourier transform of weighted $L^2$ spaces on the dual group. It is known that for suitably chosen subadditive weights, every such space is a Banach algebra with respect to pointwise multiplication of functions. In this paper, we study RKHSs associated with subconvolutive functions on the dual group. Sufficient conditions are established for these spaces to be symmetric Banach $^*$-algebras with respect to pointwise multiplication and complex conjugatio…
Let $G$ be a topological Abelian semigroup with unit, let $E$ be a Banach space, and let $C(G,E)$ denote the set of continuous functions $f\colon G\to E$. A function $f\in C(G,E)$ is a generalized polynomial, if there is an $n\ge 0$ such that $Δ_{h_1} \ldots Δ_{h_{n+1}} f=0$ for every $h_1 ,\ldots , h_{n+1} \in G$, where $Δ_h$ is the difference operator. We say that $f\in C(G,E)$ is a polynomial, if it is a generalized polynomial, and the linear span of its translates is of finite dimension; $f$ is a w-polynomial, if $u\circ f$ is a polynomial for every $u\in E^*$, and $f$ is a local polynomia…
We investigate pseudodifferential operators on arbitrary locally compact abelian groups. As symbol classes for the Kohn-Nirenberg calculus we introduce a version of Sjoestrand's class. Pseudodifferential operators with such symbols form a Banach algebra that is closed under inversion. Since "hard analysis" techniques are not available on locally compact abelian groups, a new time-frequency approach is used with the emphasis on modulation spaces, Gabor frames, and Banach algebras of matrices. Sjoestrand's original results are thus understood as a phenomenon of abstract harmonic analysis rather …
Extending M.\ Daws' definition of ultra-amenable Banach algebras, we introduce the notion of operator ultra-amenability for completely contractive Banach algebras. For a locally compact group $G$, we show that the operator ultra-amenability of $A(G)$ imposes severe restrictions on $G$. In particular, it forces $G$ to be a discrete, amenable group with no infinite abelian subgroups. For various classes of such groups, this means that $G$ is finite.
Let $H$ and $K$ be locally compact groups and $τ:H\to Aut(K)$ be a continuous homomorphism and also let $G_τ=H\ltimes_τK$ be the semi-direct product of $H$ and $K$ with respect to $τ$. We define left and also right $τ$-convolution on $L^1(G_τ)$ such that $L^1(G_τ)$ with respect to each of them is a Banach algebra. Also we define $τ$-convolution as a linear combination of the left and right $τ$-convolution. We show that the $τ$-convolution is commutative if and only if $K$ is abelian and also when $H$ and $K$ are second countable groups, the $τ$-convolution coincides with the standard convoluti…
Let $A$ be a dual Banach algebra with predual $A_\ast$ and consider the following assertions: (A) $A$ is Connes-amenable; (B) $A$ has a normal, virtual diagonal; (C) $A_\ast$ is an injective $A$-bimodule. For general $A$, all that is known is that (B) implies (A) whereas, for von Neumann algebras, (A), (B), and (C) are equivalent. We show that (C) always implies (B) whereas the converse is false for $A = M(G)$ where $G$ is an infinite, locally compact group. Furthermore, we present partial solutions towards a characterization of (A) and (B) for $B(G)$ in terms of $G$: For amenable, discrete $G…
This paper continues the study of spectral synthesis and the topologies $τ_{\infty}$ and $τ_r$ on the ideal space of a Banach algebra, concentrating on the class of Banach $^*$-algebras, and in particular on $L^1$-group algebras. It is shown that if a group G is a finite extension of an abelian group then $τ_r$ is Hausdorff on the ideal space of $L^1(G)$ if and only if $L^1(G)$ has spectral synthesis, which in turn is equivalent to $G$ being compact. The result is applied to nilpotent groups, [FD]$^-$-groups, and Moore groups. An example is given of a non-compact, non-abelian group G for which…
Let $G$ be a locally compact group, and let ${\cal R}(G)$ denote the ring of subsets of $G$ generated by the left cosets of open subsets of $G$. The Cohen--Host idempotent theorem asserts that a set lies in ${\cal R}(G)$ if and only if its indicator function is a coefficient function of a unitary representation of $G$ on some Hilbert space. We prove related results for representations of $G$ on certain Banach spaces. We apply our Cohen--Host type theorems to the study of the Figà-Talamanca--Herz algebras $A_p(G)$ with $p \in (1,\infty)$. For arbitrary $G$, we characterize those closed ideals o…
We give a simple argument to show that if α is an affine isometric action of a product G x H of topological groups on a reflexive Banach space X with linear part π, then either π(H) fixes a unit vector or α|G almost fixes a point on X. It follows that any affine isometric action of an abelian group on a reflexive Banach space X, whose linear part fixes no unit vectors, almost fixes points on X.
Let $X$ be a separable Banach space, $Y$ be a Banach space and $Λ$ be a subset of the dual group of a given compact metrizable abelian group. We prove that if $X^*$ and $Y$ have the type I-$Λ$-RNP (resp. type II-$Λ$-RNP) then $K(X,Y)$ has the type I-$Λ$-RNP (resp. type II-$Λ$-RNP) provided $L(X,Y)=K(X,Y)$. Some corollaries are then presented as well as results conserning the separability assumption on $X$. Similar results for the NearRNP and the WeakRNP are also presented.
The family of harmonic Hilbert spaces is a natural enlargement of those classical $L^{2}$-Sobolev space on $\R^d$ which consist of continuous functions. In the present paper we demonstrate that the use of basic results from the theory of Wiener amalgam spaces allows to establish fundamental properties of harmonic Hilbert spaces even if they are defined over an arbitrary locally compact abelian group $\G$. Even for $\G = \R^{d}$ this new approach improves previously known results. In this paper we present results on minimal norm interpolators over lattices and show that the infinite minimal nor…
If $Q$ is a surjection from $L^1(μ)$, $μ$ $σ$-finite, onto a Banach space containing $c_0$ then (*) $\ker Q$ is uncomplemented in its second dual. If $Q$ is a surjection from an ${\cal L}_1$-space onto a Banach space containing uniformly $\ell_n^\infty$ ($n=1,2,\dots$) then (**) there exists a bounded linear operator from $\ker Q$ into a Hilbert space which is not 2-absolutely summing. Let $S$ be an infinite Sidon set in the dual group $Γ$ of a compact abelian group $G$. Then $L^1_{\tilde{S}}(G)=\{f\in L^1(G): \hat{f}(γ)=0$ for $γ\in S\}$ satisfies (*) and (**) hence $L^1_{\tilde{S}}(G)$ is no…
We show that the analyticity of semigroups $(T_t)_{t \geq 0}$ of (not necessarily positive) selfadjoint contractive Fourier multipliers on $\mathrm{L}^p$-spaces of any abelian locally compact group is preserved by the tensorisation of the identity operator $\mathrm{Id}_X$ of a Banach space $X$ for a large class of K-convex Banach spaces, answering partially a conjecture of Pisier. The result is even new for semigroups of Fourier multipliers acting on $\mathrm{L}^p(\mathbb{R}^n)$. The proof relies on the use of noncommutative Banach spaces and we give a more general result for semigroups of Fou…
The main result of this paper is a far reaching generalization of the completeness result given by V.~Katsnelson in a recent paper [35]. Instead of just using a collection of dilated Gaussians it is shown that the key steps of an earlier paper [27] by the authors, combined with the use of Tauberian conditions (i.e. the non-vanishing of the Fourier transform) allow us to show that the linear span of the translates of a single function $g \in {\boldsymbol{\mathcal {S}({\mathbb{R}}^d)}}$ is a dense subspace of any Banach space satisfying certain double invariance properties. In fact, a much stron…
We characterize strong continuity of general operator semigroups on some Lebesgue spaces. In particular, a characterization of strong continuity of weighted composition semigroups on classical Hardy spaces and weighted Bergman spaces with regular weights is given. As applications, our result improves the results of Siskakis, A. G. \cite{AG1} and König, W. \cite{K} and answers a question of Siskakis, A. G. proposed in \cite{AG4}. We also characterize strongly continuous semigroups of weighted composition operators on weighted Bergman spaces in terms of abelian intertwiners of multiplication ope…
Let $ \mathcal{A} $ be a commutative and semisimple Banach algebra with identity norm one and $ G $ be an abelian locally compact Hausdorff group. In this paper, we study BSE-Property for $L^1(G,\mathcal A)$ and show that $L^1(G,\mathcal A)$ is a BSE algebra if and only if $\mathcal A$ is so.
Let $G$ be a locally compact abelian group, let $ν$ be a regular probability measure on $G$, let $X$ be a Banach space, let $π\colon G\to B(X)$ be a bounded strongly continuous representation. Consider the average (or subordinated) operator $S(π,ν) = \int_{G} π(t)\,dν(t)\,\colon X\to X$. We show that if $X$ is a UMD Banach lattice and $ν$ has bounded angular ratio, then $S(π,ν)$ is a Ritt operator with a bounded $H^\infty$ functional calculus. Next we show that if $ν$ is the square of a symmetric probability measure and $X$ is $K$-convex, then $S(π,ν)$ is a Ritt operator. We further show that …
Our paper begins with a revision of spectral theory for commutative Banach algebras, which enables us to prove the $L^p_ω-$conjecture for locally compact abelian groups. We follow an alternative approach to the one known in the literature. In particular, we do not resort to any structural theorems for locally compact groups. Subsequently, we discuss nilpotent, locally compact groups. The climax of the paper is the proof of the $L^p_ω-$conjecture for these groups.
Let G be a discrete group, let $p \ge 1$, and let $L^p(G)$ denote the Banach space $\{\sum_{g\in G} a_g g \mid \sum_{g\in G} |a_g|^p < \infty\}$. The following problem will be studied: given $0 \ne α\in CG$ and $0 \ne β\in L^p(G)$, is $α* β\ne 0$? We will concentrate on the case G is a free abelian or free group.
Let $G$ a locally compact abelian group with Haar measure $μ$ and let $1<p<\infty. $ In the present paper we determine necessary and sufficient conditions on $G$ for the grand Lebesgue space $ L^{p),θ}(G)$ to be a Banach algebra under convolution.Later we characterize the multipliers of the grand Lebesgues, $L^{p,)θ}(G)$ and the small Lebesgue spaces $L^{(P'θ}$, where $\frac{1}{p}+\frac{1}{p'}=1$
We consider the coorbit theory associated to general continuous wavelet transforms arising from a square-integrable, irreducible quasi-regular representation of a semidirect product group $G = \mathbb{R}^d \rtimes H$. The existence of coorbit spaces for this very general setting has been recently established, together with concrete vanishing moment criteria for analyzing vectors and atoms that can be used in the coorbit scheme. These criteria depend on fairly technical assumptions on the dual action of the dilation group, and it is one of the chief purposes of this paper to considerably simpli…
We present a unified theory for the almost periodicity of functions with values in an arbitrary Banach space, measures and distributions via almost periodic elements for the action of a locally compact abelian group on a uniform topological space. We discuss the relation between Bohr and Bochner type almost periodicity, and similar conditions, and how the equivalence among such conditions relates to properties of the group action and the uniformity. We complete the paper by demonstrating how various examples considered earlier all fit in our framework.
Since its invention in 1979, the Feichtinger algebra has become a very useful Banach space of functions with applications in time-frequency analysis, the theory of pseudo-differential operators and several other topics. It is easily defined on locally compact abelian groups and, in comparison with the Schwartz(-Bruhat) space, the Feichtinger algebra allows for more general results with easier proofs. This review paper gives a linear and comprehensive deduction of the theory of the Feichtinger algebra and its favourable properties. The material gives an entry point into the subject, but it will…
In this paper we prove an abstract homomorphism theorem for bilinear multipliers in the setting of locally compact Abelian (LCA) groups. We also provide some applications. In particular, we obtain a bilinear abstract version of K. de Leeuw's theorem for bilinear multipliers of strong and weak type. We also obtain necessary conditions on bilinear multipliers on non-compact LCA groups, yielding boundedness for the corresponding operators on products of rearrangement invariant spaces. Our investigations extend some existing results in Euclidean spaces to the framework of general LCA groups, and y…
Let B denote an arbitrary Banach space, G a compact abelian group with Haar measure $μ$ and dual group $Γ$. Let E be a Sidon subset of $Γ$ with Sidon constant S(E). Let r_n denote the n-th Rademacher function on [0, 1]. We show that there is a constant c, depending only on S(E), such that, for all $α> 0$: c^{-1}P[| \sum_{n=1}^Na_nr_n| >= c α] <= μ[| \sum_{n=1}^Na_nγ_n| >= α] <= cP [|\sum_{n=1}^Na_nr_n| >= c^{-1} α]
Let $E$ be a Banach space that does not contain any copy of $\ell^1$ and $\A$ be a non commutative $C^*$-algebra. We prove that every absolutely summing operator from $\A$ into $E^*$ is compact, thus answering a question of Pełczynski. As application, we show that if $G$ is a compact metrizable abelian group and $Λ$ is a Riesz subset of its dual then every countably additive $\A^*$-valued measure with bounded variation and whose Fourier transform is supported by $Λ$ has relatively compact range. Extensions of the same result to symmetric spaces of measurable operators are also presented.
The paper studies short exact sequences of Banach modules over the convolution algebra $L_1=L_1(G)$, where $G$ is a compact abelian group. The main tool is the notion of a nonlinear $L_1$-centralizer, which in combination with the Fourier transform, is used to produce sequences of $L_1$-modules $0\rightarrow L_q \rightarrow Z \rightarrow L_p \rightarrow 0$ that are nontrivial as long as the general theory allows it, namely for $p\in (1,\infty], q\in[1,\infty)$. Concrete examples are worked in detail for the circle group, with applications to the Hardy classes, and the Cantor group.
We show that the analyticity of semigroups $(T_t)_{t \geq 0}$ of selfadjoint contractive Fourier multipliers on $L^p$-spaces of compact abelian groups is preserved by the tensorisation of the identity operator of a Banach space for a large class of K-convex Banach spaces, answering partially a conjecture of Pisier. We also give versions of this result for some semigroups of Schur multipliers and Fourier multipliers on noncommutative $L^p$-spaces. Finally, we give a precise description of semigroups of Schur multipliers to which the result of this paper can be applied.
Recently, M. Daws introduced a notion of co-representation of abelian Hopf--von Neumann algebras on general reflexive Banach spaces. In this note, we show that this notion cannot be extended beyond subhomogeneous Hopf--von Neumann algebras. The key is our observation that, for a von Neumann algebra $\M$ and a reflexive operator space $E$, the normal spatial tensor product $\M \bar{\tensor} \CB(E)$ is a Banach algebra if and only if $\M$ is subhomogeneous or $E$ is completely isomorphic to column Hilbert space.
Let $G$ be an infinite locally compact abelian group. If $X$ is Banach space, we show that if every bounded Fourier multiplier $T$ on $L^2(G)$ has the property that $T\ot Id_X$ is bounded on $L^2(G,X)$ then the Banach space $X$ is isomorphic to a Hilbert space. Moreover, if $1<p<\infty$, $p\not=2$, we prove that there exists a bounded Fourier multiplier on $L^p(G)$ which is not completely bounded. Finally, we examine unconditionality from the point of view of Schur multipliers. More precisely, we give several necessary and sufficient conditions to determine if an operator space is completely i…
Let $U$ be a Banach Lie group and $G\le U$ a compact subgroup. We show that closed Lie subgroups of $U$ contained in sufficiently small neighborhoods $V\supseteq G$ are compact, and conjugate to subgroups of $G$ by elements close to $1\in U$; this generalizes a well-known result of Montgomery and Zippin's from finite- to infinite-dimensional Lie groups. Along the way, we also prove an approximate counterpart to Jordan's theorem on finite subgroups of general linear groups: finite subgroups of $U$ contained in sufficiently small neighborhoods $V\supseteq G$ have normal abelian subgroups of inde…
A closed subspace of a Banach space $\cX$ is almost-invariant for a collection $\cS$ of bounded linear operators on $\cX$ if for each $T \in \cS$ there exists a finite-dimensional subspace $\cF_T$ of $\cX$ such that $T \cY \subseteq \cY + \cF_T$. In this paper, we study the existence of almost-invariant subspaces of infinite dimension and codimension for various classes of Banach and Hilbert space operators. We also examine the structure of operators which admit a maximal commuting family of almost-invariant subspaces. In particular, we prove that if $T$ is an operator on a separable Hilbert s…
We study infinite matrices $A$ indexed by a discrete group $G$ that are dominated by a convolution operator in the sense that $|(Ac)(x)| \leq (a \ast |c|)(x)$ for $x\in G$ and some $a\in \ell ^1(G)$. This class of "convolution-dominated" matrices forms a Banach-*-algebra contained in the algebra of bounded operators on $\ell ^2(G)$. Our main result shows that the inverse of a convolution-dominated matrix is again convolution-dominated, provided that $G$ is amenable and rigidly symmetric. For abelian groups this result goes back to Gohberg, Baskakov, and others, for non-abelian groups completel…
