We consider the question of exponential decay to equilibrium of solutions of an abstract class of degenerate evolution equations on a Hilbert space modeling the steady Boltzmann and other kinetic equations. Specifically, we provide conditions suitable for construction of a stable manifold in a particular "reverse L infinity norm" and examine when these do and do not hold.
In this work, first we prove that for any compact set $K\subset\mathbb{R}^{n}$ and any continuous function $ϕ$ defined on $\partial K$, there exists a bounded weak solution in $C(\bar{\mathbb{R}^{n}\backslash K}) \cap C^1(\mathbb{R}^{n}\backslash K)$ to the exterior Dirichlet problem $$ \begin{cases} -{\rm div}\big(\,|\nabla u|^{p-2}A(\,|\nabla u|\,)\nabla u\,\big)=f & \text{ in }\, \mathbb{R}^n \backslash K \;\;\;\;\;\; u = ϕ& \text{ on } \partial K \end{cases} $$ provided $p > n$, $A$ satisfies some growth conditions and $f\in L^{\infty}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ meets a suitable pointwise decay rate. …
The present paper is concerned a class of quasi-linear elliptic degenerate equations. The degenerate operator comes from the analysis of manifolds with corner singularity. Variational methods are applied to verify the existence of infinity many solutions for the problems.
Under a precise nonlinearity-diffusivity assumption we establish the decay of entropy solutions of a degenerate nonlinear parabolic equation with initial data being a sum of periodic function and a function vanishing at infinity (in the sense of measure).
We consider the Cauchy problem for doubly nonlinear degenerate parabolic equations with inhomogeneous density on noncompact Riemannian manifolds. We give a qualitative classification of the behavior of the solutions of the problem depending on the behavior of the density function at infinity and the geometry of the manifold, which is described in terms of its isoperimetric function. We establish for the solutions properties as: stabilization of the solution to zero for large times, finite speed of propagation, universal bounds of the solution, blow up of the interface. Each one of these behavi…
We find an explicit form of weak solutions to a Riemann problem for a degenerate semilinear parabolic equation with piecewise constant diffusion coefficient. It is demonstrated that the phase transition lines (free boundaries) correspond to the minimum point of some strictly convex function of a finite number of variables. In the limit as number of phases tend to infinity we obtain a variational formulation of self-similar solution with an arbitrary nonnegative diffusion function.
We consider strictly log-concave measures, whose bounds degenerate at infinity. We prove that the optimal transport map from the Gaussian onto such a measure is locally Lipschitz, and that the eigenvalues of its Jacobian have controlled growth at infinity.
Non-diffusive large time behaviour for a degenerate viscous Hamilton-Jacobi equation
We prove existence of the largest and the smallest entropy solutions to the Cauchy problem for a nonlinear degenerate anisotropic parabolic equation. Applying this result, we establish the comparison principle in the case when at least one of the initial functions is periodic. In the case when initial function vanishes at infinity (in the sense of strong average) we prove the long time decay of an entropy solution under exact nonlinearity-diffusivity condition.
We study a class of second-order boundary-degenerate elliptic equations in two dimensions with minimal regularity assumptions. We prove a maximum principle and a Harnack inequality at the degenerate boundary, and assuming local boundedness, we prove continuity. On globally defined non-negative solutions we provide strong constraints on behavior at infinity, and prove a Liouville-type theorem for entire solutions on the closed half-plane. The class of PDE in question includes many from mathematical finance, Keldysh- and Tricomi-type PDE, and the 2nd order reduction of the fully non-linear 4th o…
We consider local weak large solutions with its blow-up rate near the boundary to certain class of degenerate and/or singular quasilinear elliptic equation\\ ${\rm div}(d^α(x,\partial{}B)Φ_p(\nabla u)) = b(x)f(u)$ in a ball B, where $f$ is normalized regularly varying at infinity with index $σ+1>p-1,\ p>1$. In particular, how the asymptotic behavior of the solution changes over the varying index and degeneracy and/ or singularity present in the equation. We also include the second order blow-up rate for the corresponding semilinear problem.
In this manuscript, we study geometric regularity estimates for degenerate parabolic equations of $p$-Laplacian type ($2 \leq p< \infty$) under a strong absorption condition: $ Δ_p u - \frac{\partial u}{\partial t} = λ_0 u_{+}^q \quad \mbox{in} \quad Ω_T \defeq Ω\times (0, T), $ where $0 \leq q < 1$ and $λ_0$ is a function bounded away from zero and infinity. This model is interesting because it yields the formation of dead-core sets, i.e, regions where non-negative solutions vanish identically. We shall prove sharp and improved parabolic $C^α$ regularity estimates along the set $\mathfrak{F}_…
We prove the global existence and uniqueness of smooth solutions to the one-dimensional barotropic Navier-Stokes system with degenerate viscosity $μ(ρ)=ρ^α$. We establish that the smooth solutions have possibly two different far-fields, and the initial density remains positive globally in time, for the initial data satisfying the same conditions. In addition, our result works for any $α>0$, i.e., for a large class of degenerate viscosities. In particular, our models include the viscous shallow water equations. This extends the result of Constantin-Drivas-Nguyen-Pasqualotto \cite[Theorem 1.5]{C…
In this paper, we study parabolic equations in divergence form with coefficients that are singular degenerate as some Muckenhoupt weight functions in one spatial variable. Under certain conditions, weighted reverse Hölder's inequalities are established. Lipschitz estimates for weak solutions are proved for homogeneous equations with singular degenerate coefficients depending only on one spatial variable. These estimates are then used to establish interior, boundary, and global weighted estimates of Calderón-Zygmund type for weak solutions, assuming that the coefficients are partially VMO (vani…
The long-time regularity and asymptotic of weak solutions are studied for compressible Navier-Stokes equations with degenerate viscosity in a bounded periodic domain in two and three dimensions. It is shown that the density keeps strictly positive from below and above after a finite period of time. Moreover, higher velocity regularity is obtained via a parabolic type iteration technique. Since then the weak solution conserves its energy equality, and decays exponentially to the equilibrium in $L^{2}$-norm as time goes to infinity. In addition, assume that the initial momentum is zero, the expo…
We prove in this paper the global Lorentz estimate in term of fractional-maximal function for gradient of weak solutions to a class of p-Laplace elliptic equations containing a non-negative Schrödinger potential which belongs to reverse Hölder classes. In particular, this class of p-Laplace operator includes both degenerate and non-degenerate cases. The interesting idea is to use an efficient approach based on the level-set inequality related to the distribution function in harmonic analysis.
We study the large-time behavior of strong solutions to the one-dimensional, compressible Navier-Stokes system for a viscous and heat conducting ideal polytropic gas, when the viscosity is constant and the heat conductivity is proportional to a positive power of the temperature. Both the specific volume and the temperature are proved to be bounded from below and above independently of time. Moreover, it is shown that the global solution is nonlinearly exponentially stable as time tends to infinity. Note that the conditions imposed on the initial data are the same as those of the constant heat …
In this paper, the Cauchy problem for the three-dimensional (3-D) isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations is considered. When viscosity coefficients are given as a constant multiple of the density's power ($ρ^δ$ with $0<δ<1$), based on some analysis of the nonlinear structure of this system, we identify the class of initial data admitting a local regular solution with far field vacuum and finite energy in some inhomogeneous Sobolev spaces by introducing some new variables and initial compatibility conditions, which solves an open problem of degenerate viscous flow partially mentioned b…
We prove the short-time asymptotic formula for the interfaces and local solutions near the interfaces for the nonlinear double degenerate reaction-diffusion equation of turbulent filtration with fast diffusion and strong absorption \[ u_t=(|(u^{m})_x|^{p-1}(u^{m})_x)_x-bu^β, \, 0<mp<1, \, β>0. \] Full classification is pursued in terms of the nonlinearity parameters $m, p,β$ and asymptotics of the initial function near its support. In the case of an infinite speed of propagation of the interface, the asymptotic behavior of the local solution is classified at infinity. A full classification of …
The mathematical analysis on the behavior of the entropy for viscous, compressible, and heat conducting magnetohydrodynamic flows near the vacuum region is a challenging problem as the governing equation for entropy is highly degenerate and singular in the vacuum region. In particular, it is unknown whether the entropy remains its boundedness. In the present paper, we investigate the Cauchy problem to the three-dimensional (3D) compressible heat-conducting magnetohydrodynamic equations with vacuum at infinity only. We show that the uniform boundedness of the entropy and the $L^2$ regularities …
We prove Poincaré and Sobolev inequalities in matrix A${}_p$ weighted spaces. We then use these Poincaré inequalities to prove existence and regularity results for degenerate systems of elliptic equations whose degeneracy is governed by a matrix A${}_p$ weight. Such results parallel earlier results by Fabes, Kenig, and Serapioni for a single degenerate equation governed by a scalar A${}_p$ weight. In addition, we prove Cacciopoli and reverse Hölder inequalities for weak solutions of the degenerate systems. As a means to prove the Poincaré inequalities we prove that the Riesz potential and frac…
We consider a Dirichlet type problem for a nonlinear, nonlocal equation driven by the degenerate fractional p-Laplacian, whose reaction combines a sublinear term depending on a positive parameter and an asymmetric perturbation (superlinear at positive infinity, at most linear at negative infinity). By means of critical point theory and Morse theory, we prove that, for small enough values of the parameter, such problem admits at least four nontrivial solutions: two positive, one negative, and one nodal. As a tool, we prove a Brezis-Oswald type comparison result.
We consider the problem of asymptotic stability and linear inviscid damping for perturbations of a point vortex and similar degenerate circular flows. Here, key challenges include the lack of strict monotonicity and the necessity of working in weighted Sobolev spaces whose weights degenerate as the radius tends to zero or infinity. Prototypical examples are given by circular flows with power law singularities or zeros as $r\downarrow 0$ or $r \uparrow \infty$.

We consider the Cauchy problem for doubly non-linear degenerate parabolic equations on Riemannian manifolds of infinite volume, or in $\R^N$. The equation contains a weight function as a capacitary coefficient which we assume to decay at infinity. We connect the behavior of non-negative solutions to the interplay between such coefficient and the geometry of the manifold, obtaining, in a suitable subcritical range, estimates of the vanishing rate for long times and of the finite speed of propagation. In supercritical ranges we obtain universal bounds and prove blow up in a finite time of the (i…
Orlicz-type Function Spaces and Generalized Gradient Flows with Degenerate Dissipation Potentials in Non-Reflexive Banach Spaces: Theory and Application
In this paper, we study the mathematical properties of the solution $\bold{u}=\left(u^1,\cdots,u^k\right)$ to the degenerate parabolic system \begin{equation*} \bold{u}_t=\nabla\cdot\left(\left|\nabla\bold{u}\right|^{p-2}\nabla \bold{u}\right), \qquad \qquad \left(p>2\right). \end{equation*} More precisely, we show the uniqueness and existence of solution $\bold{u}$ and investigate a priori $L^{\infty}$ boundedness of the gradient of the solution. Assuming that the solution decays quickly at infinity, we also prove that the component $u^l$, $\left(1\leq l\leq k\right)$, converges to the functi…
It is known that sub-extremal black hole backgrounds do not admit a (bijective) non-degenerate scattering theory in the exterior region due to the fact that the redshift effect at the event horizon acts as an unstable blueshift mechanism in the backwards direction. In the extremal case, however, the redshift effect degenerates and hence yields a much milder blueshift effect when viewed in the backwards direction. In this paper, we construct a definitive (bijective) non-degenerate scattering theory for the wave equation on extremal Reissner-Nordstrom backgrounds. We make use of physical-space e…
We study the long-time behaviour of solutions to quasilinear doubly degenerate parabolic problems of fourth order. The equations model for instance the dynamic behaviour of a non-Newtonian thin-film flow on a flat impermeable bottom and with zero contact angle. We consider a shear-rate dependent fluid the rheology of which is described by a constitutive power-law or Ellis-law for the fluid viscosity. In all three cases, positive constants (i.e. positive flat films) are the only positive steady-state solutions. Moreover, we can give a detailed picture of the long-time behaviour of solutions wit…
