Let $G$ be a finite simple graph. For $X \subset V(G)$, the difference of $X$, $d(X) := |X| - |N (X)|$ where $N(X)$ is the neighborhood of $X$ and $\max \, \{d(X):X\subset V(G)\}$ is called the critical difference of $G$. $X$ is called a critical set if $d(X)$ equals the critical difference and ker$(G)$ is the intersection of all critical sets. It is known that ker$(G)$ is an independent (vertex) set of $G$. diadem$(G)$ is the union of all critical independent sets. An independent set $S$ is an inclusion minimal set with $d(S) > 0$ if no proper subset of $S$ has positive difference.
A graph $G$ is called König-Egerváry if the sum of its independence number ($α(G)$) and matching number ($μ(G)$) equals $|V(G)|$. It is known that bipartite graphs are König-Egerváry.
In this paper, we study independent sets with positive difference for which every proper subset has a smaller difference and prove a result conjectured by Levit and Mandrescu in 2013. The conjecture states that for any graph, the number of inclusion minimal sets $S$ with $d(S) > 0$ is at least the critical difference of the graph. We also give a short proof of the inequality $|$ker$(G)| + |$diadem$(G)| \le 2α(G)$ (proved by Short in 2016).
A characterization of unicyclic non-König-Egerváry graphs is also presented and a conjecture which states that for such a graph $G$, the critical difference equals $α(G) - μ(G)$, is proved.
We also make an observation about ker$G)$ using Edmonds-Gallai Structure Theorem as a concluding remark.
Maximum matchings and minimum dominating sets in Apollonian networks and extended Tower of Hanoi graphs
In this paper, we show that, given two down-sets (simplicial complexes) there is a matching between them that matches disjoint sets and covers the smaller of the two down-sets. This result generalizes an unpublished result of Berge from circa 1980. The result has nice corollaries for cross-intersecting families and Chvátal's conjecture. More concretely, we show that Chvátal's conjecture is true for intersecting families with covering number $2$. A family $\mathcal F\subset 2^{[n]}$ is intersection-union (IU) if for any $A,B\in\mathcal F$ we have $1\le |A\cap B|\le n-1$. Using the aforementione…
Let $G$ be a graph and suppose we are given, for each $v \in V(G)$, a strict ordering of the neighbors of $v$. A set of matchings ${\cal M}$ of $G$ is called internally stable if there are no matchings $M,M' \in {\cal M}$ such that an edge of $M$ blocks $M'$. The sets of stable (à la Gale and Shapley) matchings and of von Neumann-Morgenstern stable matchings are examples of internally stable sets of matching. In this paper, we study, in both the marriage and the roommate case, inclusionwise maximal internally stable sets of matchings. We call those sets internally closed. By building on known …
Monadic second order logic can be used to express many classical notions of sets of vertices of a graph as for instance: dominating sets, induced matchings, perfect codes, independent sets or irredundant sets. Bounds on the number of sets of any such family of sets are interesting from a combinatorial point of view and have algorithmic applications. Many such bounds on different families of sets over different classes of graphs are already provided in the literature. In particular, Rote recently showed that the number of minimal dominating sets in trees of order $n$ is at most $95^{\frac{n}{13…
The goal of this paper is to obtain quantitative results on the number and on the size of maximal independent sets and maximal matchings in several block-stable graph classes that satisfy a proper sub-criticality condition. In particular we cover trees, cacti graphs and series-parallel graphs. The proof methods are based on a generating function approach and a proper singularity analysis of solutions of implicit systems of functional equations in several variables. As a byproduct, this method extends previous results of Meir and Moon for trees [Meir, Moon: On maximal independent sets of nodes …
Let $3\le d\le k$ and $ν\ge 0$ be fixed and $\mathcal{F}\subset\binom{[n]}{k}$. The matching number of $\mathcal{F}$, denoted by $ν(\mathcal{F})$, is the maximum number of pairwise disjoint sets in $\mathcal{F}$, and $\mathcal{F}$ is $d$-cluster-free if it does not contain $d$ sets with the union of size at most $2k$ and empty intersection. In this paper, we give a lower bound and an upper bound for the maximum size of a $d$-cluster-free family with a matching number at least $ν+1$. In particular, our result of the case $ν=1$ settles a conjecture of Mammoliti and Britz. We also introduce a Tur…
[Klostermeyer et al.,Theory and Application of Graphs,2017]在研究某个图保护问题的背景下。
We prove tight upper bounds on the logarithmic derivative of the independence and matching polynomials of d-regular graphs. For independent sets, this theorem is a strengthening of the results of Kahn, Galvin and Tetali, and Zhao showing that a union of copies of $K_{d,d}$ maximizes the number of independent sets and the independence polynomial of a d-regular graph. For matchings, this shows that the matching polynomial and the total number of matchings of a d-regular graph are maximized by a union of copies of $K_{d,d}$. Using this we prove the asymptotic upper matching conjecture of Friedlan…
In this paper independent sets of closure operations are introduced. We characterize minimal keys and antikeys of closure operations in terms of independent sets. We establish an expression on the connection between minimal keys and antikeys of closure operations based on independent sets. We construct two combinatorial algorithms for finding all minimal keys and all antikeys of a given closure operation based on independent sets. We estimate the time complexity of these algorithms. Finally, we give an NP-complete problem concerning nonkeys of closure operations.
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a matching-covered graph and $X$ be an edge set of $G$. $X$ is said to be feasible if there exist two perfect matchings $M_1$ and $M_2$ in $G$ such that $|M_1\cap X|\not \equiv|M_2\cap X|\ (\mbox{mod } 2)$. For any $V_0\subseteq V$, $X$ is said to be switching-equivalent to $X\oplus \nabla_G(V_0)$, where $\nabla_G(V_0)$ is the set of edges in $G$ each of which has exactly one end in $V_0$ and $A \oplus B$ is the symmetric difference of two sets $A$ and $B$. Lukot'ka and Rollová showed that when $G$ is regular and bipartite, $X$ is non-feasible if and only if $X$ is switching-e…
An independent set A is maximal if it is not a proper subset of an independent set, while A is maximum if it has a maximum size. The problem of whether a graph has a pair of disjoint maximal independent sets was introduced by C. Berge in early 70's. The class of graphs for which every induced subgraph admits two disjoint maximal independent sets was characterized in (Shaudt, 2015). It is known that deciding whether a graph has two disjoint maximal independent sets is a NP-complete problem (Henning et al., 2009). In this paper, we are focused on finding conditions ensuring the existence of two …
The present note is a strengthening of a recent paper by K. Takazawa and Y. Yokoi (A generalized-polymatroid approach to disjoint common independent sets in two matroids, Discrete Mathematics (2019)). For given two matroids on $E$, under the same assumption in their paper to guarantee the existence of a partition of $E$ into $k$ common independent sets of the two matroids, we show that there exists a nearly uniform partition $\mathcal{P}$ of $E$ into $k$ common independent sets, where the difference of the cardinalities of any two sets in $\mathcal{P}$ is at most one.
We study two models of an age-biased graph process: the $δ$-version of the preferential attachment graph model (PAM) and the uniform attachment graph model (UAM), with $m$ attachments for each of incoming vertices. We show that almost surely the scaled size of a breadth-first (descendant) tree rooted at a fixed vertex converges, for $m=1$, to a limit whose distribution is a mixture of two beta-distributions and a single beta-distribution respectively, and that for $m>1$ the limit is $1$. We also analyze the likely performance of two greedy (online) algorithms, for a large matching set and a la…
We prove that the `Upper Matching Conjecture' of Friedland, Krop, and Markström and the analogous conjecture of Kahn for independent sets in regular graphs hold for all large enough graphs as a function of the degree. That is, for every $d$ and every large enough $n$ divisible by $2d$, a union of $n/(2d)$ copies of the complete $d$-regular bipartite graph maximizes the number of independent sets and matchings of size $k$ for each $k$ over all $d$-regular graphs on $n$ vertices. To prove this we utilize the cluster expansion for the canonical ensemble of a statistical physics spin model, and we…
Finding the maximum number of maximal independent sets in an $n$-vertex graph $G$, $i(G)$, from a restricted class is an extensively studied problem. Let $kK_2$ denote the matching of size $k$, that is a graph with $2k$ vertices and $k$ disjoint edges. A graph with an induced copy of $kK_2$ contains at least $2^k$ maximal independent sets. The other direction was established in a series of papers finally yielding $i(G) \le (n/k)^{2k}$ for a graph $G$ without an induced $(k+1)K_2$. Alekseev proved that $i(G)$ is at most the number of induced matchings of $G$. This work generalises the aforement…
In this note, we analyze two random greedy processes on sparse random graphs and hypergraphs with a given degree sequence. First we analyze the matching process, which builds a set of disjoint edges one edge at a time; then we analyze the independent process, which builds an independent set of vertices one vertex at a time. We use the differential equations method and apply a general theorem of Warnke. Our main contribution is to significantly reduce the associated systems of differential equations and simplify the expression for the final size of the matching or independent set.

We connect two classical results in extremal graph theory concerning the number of maximal independent sets. The maximum number mis$(n)$ of maximal independent sets in an $n$-vertex graph was determined by Moon and Moser. The maximum number mis$_\bigtriangleup(n)$ of maximal independent sets in an $n$-vertex triangle-free graph was determined by Hujter and Tuza. We determine the maximum number mis$_t(n)$ of maximal independent sets in an $n$-vertex graph containing no induced triangle matching of size $t+1$. We also reprove a stability result of Kahn and Park on the maximum number mis$_{\bigtr…
In this note, we prove that there exists a universal constant $c=\frac{43}{50}$ such that for every $k\in \mathbb{N}$ and every $d<k/2$, every $k$-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices and with minimum $d$-degree at least $(c+o_n(1))\binom{n-d}{k-d}$ contains a perfect matching. This is the first such bound which is independent of $k$, and therefore, improves all previously known bounds when $k$ is large. Our approach is based on combining the seminal work of Alon et al. with known bounds on a conjectured probabilistic inequality due to Feige.
Let $G$ be a graph $G$ whose largest independent set has size $m$. A permutation $π$ of $\{1, \ldots, m\}$ is an {\em independent set permutation} of $G$ if $$ a_{π(1)}(G) \leq a_{π(2)}(G) \leq \cdots \leq a_{π(m)}(G) $$ where $a_k(G)$ is the number of independent sets of size $k$ in $G$. In 1987 Alavi, Malde, Schwenk and Erdős proved that every permutation of $\{1, \ldots, m\}$ is an independent set permutation of some graph with $α(G)=m$, i.e. with largest independent set having size $m$. They raised the question of determining, for each $m$, the smallest number $f(m)$ such that every permut…
In this paper, we consider the average size of independent edge sets, also called matchings, in a graph. We characterize the extremal graphs for the average size of matchings in general graphs and trees. In addition, we obtain inequalities between the average size of matchings and the number of matchings as well as the matching energy, which is defined as the sum of the absolute values of the zeros of the matching polynomial.
We prove that any family $E_1, \ldots , E_{\lceil rn \rceil}$ of (not necessarily distinct) sets of edges in an $r$-uniform hypergraph, each having a fractional matching of size $n$, has a rainbow fractional matching of size $n$ (that is, a set of edges from distinct $E_i$'s which supports such a fractional matching). When the hypergraph is $r$-partite and $n$ is an integer, the number of sets needed goes down from $rn$ to $rn-r+1$. The problem solved here is a fractional version of the corresponding problem about rainbow matchings, which was solved by Drisko and by Aharoni and Berger in the c…
The topic of stable matchings (marriages) in a bipartite graph has become widely popular, starting with the appearance of the classical work by Gale and Shapley. We give a detailed survey on selected known results in this field that demonstrate structural, polyhedral and algorithmic properties of such matchings and their sets, providing our description with relatively short proofs.
