When a graphene layer is stressed, the strain alters the phase an electron accumulates hopping between sites in a way that can be modeled as arising from a pseudo-magnetic vector potential. We examine the case of an oscillating graphene ribbon and explore a new effect - an oscillating resistance arising from an oscillating quantum Hall effect. This pseudo-magneto-resistance is large, and depends upon the frequency and the amplitude of the acoustic oscillations. We calculate the consequences for experiment.
We report the low-temperature magneto-transport in the bulk-insulating single crystal of topological insulator Sn doped Bi1.1Sb0.9Te2S. The Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations appear with their reciprocal frequency proportional to cos/theta , demonstrating the dominant transport of topological surface states. While the magnetic field is rotating in the sample surface, the planar Hall effect arises with sizeable oscillations following a relation of cos/theta sin/theta . Its amplitude reaches the maximum at the lowest temperature and drops to nearly zero at the temperature higher than 100 K. All thes…
We have measured activation gaps for odd-integer quantum Hall states in a unidirectional lateral superlattice (ULSL) -- a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) subjected to a unidirectional periodic modulation of the electrostatic potential. By comparing the activation gaps with those simultaneously measured in the adjacent section of the same 2DEG sample without modulation, we find that the gaps are reduced in the ULSL by an amount corresponding to the width acquired by the Landau levels through the introduction of the modulation. The decrement of the activation gap varies with the magnetic fie…
Chiral Majorana edge modes are theoretically proposed to perform braiding operations for the potential quantum computation. Here, we suggest a scheme to regulate trajectories of the chiral Majorana fermion based on a quantum anomalous Hall insulator (QAHI)-topological superconductor heterostructure. An applied external gate voltage to the QAHI region introduces a dynamical phase so that the outgoing Majorana fermions can be prominently tuned to different leads. The trajectory is mechanically analyzed and the electrical manipulation is represented by the oscillating transmission coefficients ve…
The kagome lattice antiferromagnets Mn$_3$X(= Sn, Ge) have a noncollinear 120$^\circ$ ordered ground state, which engenders a strong anomalous Hall response. It has been shown that this response is linked to the magnetic order and can be manipulated through it. Here we use a combination of strain and spin-transfer torques to control the magnetic order and hence switch deterministically between states of different chirality. Each of these chiral ground states has an anomalous Hall conductivity tensor in a different direction. Furthermore, we show that a similar manipulation of the strained samp…
Motivated by experiments, we study the sign of the Coulomb drag voltage in a double layer system in a strong magnetic field. We show that the commonly used Fermi Golden Rule approach implicitly assumes a linear dependence of intra-layer conductivity on density, and is thus inadequate in strong magnetic fields. Going beyond this approach, we show that the drag voltage commonly changes sign with density difference between the layers. We predict that in the Quantum Hall regime the Hall and longitudinal drag resistivities are comparable. Our results are also relevant for pumping and acoustoelectri…
We study the current tunable microwave signal properties of nano-constriction based spin Hall nano-oscillators (SHNOs) in oblique magnetic fields as a function of the nano-constriction width, $w=$~50--140 nm. The threshold current is found to scale linearly with $w$, defining a constant threshold current density of $J_{th}=$ 1.7 $\times$ 10$^{8}$ A/cm$^2$. While the current dependence of the microwave frequency shows the same generic non-monotonic behavior for all $w\geqslant$ 80 nm, the quality of the generated microwave signal improves strongly with $w$, showing a linear $w$ dependence for b…
Bilayer quantum Hall states at $ν=1$ have been demonstrated to possess a distinguished state with interlayer phase coherence. The state has both excitations of Skyrmion with spin and pseudoSkyrmion with pseudospin. We show that Skyrmion $\leftrightarrow$ pseudoSkyrmion transition arises in the state by changing imbalance between electron densities in both layers; PseudoSkyrmion is realized at balance point, while Skyrmion is realized at large imbalance. The transition can be seen by observing the dependence of activation energies on magnetic field parallel to the layers.
We derive the effective field theory from the microscopic Hamiltonian of interacting two-dimensional (pseudo) Dirac electrons by performing a statistic gauge transformation. The quantized Hall conductance are expected to be $σ_{xy}=\frac{e^2}{h}(2k-1)$ with $k$ is arbitrary integer. There are also topological excitations which have fractional charge and obey fractional statistics.
We consider the oscillating sign of the drag resistivity and its anomalous temperature dependence discovered experimentally in a bi-layer system in the regime of the integer quantum Hall effect. We attribute the oscillating sign to the effect of disorder on the relation between an adiabatic momentum transfer to an electron and the displacement of its position. While in the absence of any Landau level mixing a momentum transfer $\hbar \bf q$ implies a displacement of $ql_H^2$ (with $l_H$ being the magnetic length), Landau level mixing induced by short range disorder adds a potentially large dis…
In the bilayer quantum Hall coherent state for $ν_T$ deviating slightly from one, we show that, instead of the global order parameter, the spontaneous breaking of the pseudospin U(1) rotational symmetry is reflected by the periodic domain structure accompanying with the charged meron pairs. The motion of meron pairs induces a novel pseudospin wave. The long range order of the periodic domains in a low bias voltage range leads to the residual zero-bias peak in the tunneling conductance even when the pseudopsin Goldstone feature in a high bias voltage range can be distinct from it.
The distinguishing feature of the quantum Hall ferromagnet is the identity between the electrical and topological charge densities of a spin distortion. In addition to the wealth of physics associated with Skyrmionic excitations of the quantum Hall ferromagnet, this identification permits a rather curious coupling of spinwaves to the disorder potential. A wavepacket of spinwaves has an associated, oscillating dipole charge distribution, due to the non-linear form of the topological density. We investigate the way in which this coupling modifies the conductivity and temperature dependence of ma…
In this paper we report calculations of some pseudospin textures for bilayer quantum hall systems with filling factor $ ν=1$. The textures we study are isolated single meron solutions. Meron solutions have already been studied at great length by others by minimising the microscopic Hamiltonian between microscopic trial wavefunctions. Our approach is somewhat different. We calculate them by numerically solving the nonlinear integro -differential equations arising from extremisation of the effective action for pseudospin textures. Our results can be viewed as augmenting earlier results and provi…
Pseudospin solitons in double-layer quantum Hall systems can be introduced by a magnetic field component coplanar with the electrons and can be pinned by applying voltages to external gates. We estimate the temperature below which depinning occurs predominantly via tunneling and calculate low-temperature depinning rates for realistic geometries. We discuss the local changes in charge and current densities and in spectral functions that can be used to detect solitons and observe their temporal evolution.
The mean field (MF) composite Fermion (CF) picture successfully predicts the band of low lying angular momentum multiplets of fractional quantum Hall systems for any value of the magnetic field. This success cannot be attributed to a cancellation between Coulomb and Chern--Simons interactions between fluctuations beyond the mean field. It results instead from the short range behavior of the Coulomb pseudopotential in the lowest Landau level (LL). The class of pseudopotentials for which the MFCF picture is successful can be defined, and used to explain the success or failure of the picture in d…
We demonstrate that the spin Hall effect in a thin film with strong spin-orbit scattering can excite magnetic precession in an adjacent ferromagnetic film. The flow of alternating current through a Pt/NiFe bilayer generates an oscillating transverse spin current in the Pt, and the resultant transfer of spin angular momentum to the NiFe induces ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) dynamics. The Oersted field from the current also generates an FMR signal but with a different symmetry. The ratio of these two signals allows a quantitative determination of the spin current and the spin Hall angle.
We investigate the phenomenon of integer quantum Hall effect in a square lattice, subjected to a perpendicular magnetic field, through Landauer-Büttiker formalism within the tight-binding framework. The oscillating nature of longitudinal resistance and near complete suppression of momentum relaxation processes are examined by studying the flow of charge current using Landauer-Keldysh prescription. Our analysis for the lattice model corroborates the finding obtained in the continuum model and provides a simple physical understanding.
Systems of up to twelve electrons and six holes on the Haldane sphere are studied by exact numerical diagonalization. The low lying states of the system involve bound excitonic complexes such as (X^n)-. The angular momenta of these complexes and the pseudopotentials describing their interaction are determined. The similarity to the electron pseudopotential suggests the possibility of incompressible ground states of a gas of X- ions for nu<=1/3. The nu=1/3 state of three X-'s is found.
Edelstein and spin Hall effect response functions for a two-dimensional (2D) system of pseudospin-1 particles is investigated. These two response functions denoted by $ σ_{SH} $ and $ σ_{EE} $ have been analyzed in a pseudospin-1 particle system in the presence of the Rashba-type spin-orbit interaction using the Kubo-Streda technique and vertex corrections with non-magnetic impurities. Then, for a given range of the Rashba coupling, response functions of the spin Hall effect (SHE) and Edelstein effect (EE) have been estimated at various energy gaps and Fermi energies. Results indicate that in …
The parallel field of a full spin polarization of the electron gas in a \Gamma8 conduction band of the HgTe quantum well was obtained from the magnetoresistance by three different ways in a zero and quasi-classical range of perpendicular field component Bper. In the quantum Hall range of Bper the spin polarization manifests in anticrossings of magnetic levels, which were found to strongly nonmonotonously depend on Bper.
Mechanical deformations of graphene induce a term in the Dirac Hamiltonian which is reminiscent of an electromagnetic vector potential. Strain gradients along particular lattice directions induce local pseudomagnetic fields and substantial energy gaps as indeed observed experimentally. Expanding this analogy, we propose to complement the pseudomagnetic field by a pseudoelectric field, generated by a time dependent oscillating stress applied to a graphene ribbon. The joint Hall-like response to these crossed fields results in a strain-induced charge current along the ribbon. We analyze in detai…
We present dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) in the simplest pseudospin quantum Hall ferromagnet (QHF) of an InSb two-dimensional electron gas with a large g factor using tilted magnetic fields. The DNP-induced amplitude change of a resistance spike of the QHF at large current enables observation of the resistively detected nuclear magnetic resonance of the high nuclear spin isotope 115In with nine quadrupole splittings. Our results demonstrate the importance of domain structures in the DNP process. The nuclear spin relaxation time T1 in this QHF was relatively short (~ 120 s), and almost tem…
The spectral functions of the pseudospin correlation functions in the bilayer quantum Hall system at ν=1 are investigated numerically, where the pseudospin describes the layer degrees of freedom. In the pseudospin-ferromagnetic phase, the lowest-energy excitation branch is closely connected with the ground state through the fluctuations of pseudospin S_y and S_z, and it plays a significant role on the tunneling properties in this system. For the system with very small tunneling amplitude and layer separation smaller than the critical one, the system-size dependence of calculated spectral funct…
We investigate a domain structure of pseudospins, a soliton lattice in the bilayer quantum Hall state at total Landau level filling factor $ν=1$, in a tilted magnetic field, where the pseudospin represents the layer degree of freedom. An anomalous peak in the magnetoresistance $R_{xx}$ appears at the transition point between the commensurate and incommensurate phases. The $R_{xx}$ at the peak is highly anisotropic for the angle between the in-plain magnetic field $B_\parallel $ and the current, and indicates a formation of the soliton lattice aligned parallel to $B_\parallel $. Temperature dep…
Recent experiments on strongly correlated bilayer quantum Hall systems strongly suggest that, contrary to the usual assumption, the electron spin degree of freedom is not completely frozen either in the quantum Hall or in the compressibles states that occur at filling factor $ν=1.$ These experiments imply that the quasiparticles at $ν=1$ could have both spin and pseudospin textures i.e. they could be CP$^{3}$ skyrmions. Using a microscopic unrestricted Hartree-Fock approximation, we compute the energy of several crystal states with spin, pseudospin and mixed spin-pseudospin textures around $ν=…
The electronic behavior in graphene under arbitrary uniaxial deformations, such as foldings or flexural fields is studied by including in the Dirac equation pseudoelectromagnetic fields. General foldings are thus studied by showing that uniaxial deformations can be considered pseudomagnetic fields in the Coulomb gauge norm. This allows to give an expression for the Fermi (zero) energy modes wavefunctions. For random deformations, contact is made with previous works on the quantum Hall effect under random magnetic fields, showing that the density of states has a power law behavior and that the …
We study the effect of a uniform pseudomagnetic field, induced by a strain in a monolayer and double layer of gapped graphene, acting on excitons. For our analysis it is crucial that the pseudomagnetic field acts on the charges of the constituent particles of the excitons, i.e., the electrons and holes, the same way in contrast to a magnetic field. Moreover, using a circularly polarized laser field, the electrons and the holes can be excited only in one valley of the honeycomb lattice of gapped graphene. This breaks the time-reversal symmetry and provides the possibility to observe the various…
We propose a new theory of the topological Hall effect (THE) in systems with chiral magnetization vortices such as magnetic skyrmions. We solve the problem of electron scattering on a magnetic skyrmion exactly, for an arbitrary strength of exchange interaction and the skyrmion size. We report the existence of different regimes of THE and resolve the apparent contradiction between the adiabatic Berry phase theoretical approach and the perturbation theory for THE. We traced how the topological charge Hall effect transforms into the spin Hall effect upon varying the exchange interaction strength …
The pseudo-spin model for double layer quantum Hall system with total landau level filling factor $ν=1$ is discussed. Unlike the "traditional" one where interlayer voltage enters as static magnetic field along pseudo- spin hard axis, in our model we consider applied interlayer voltage as a frequency of precessing pseudo-magnetic field lying into the easy plane. It is shown that a Landau-Lifshitz equation for the considered pseudo magnetic system well describes existing experimental data. Besides that, the mentioned model predicts novel directed intra-layer transport phenomenon in the system: u…
We present fractional quantum Hall domain walls confined in a gate-defined wire structure. Our experiments utilize spatial oscillation of domain walls driven by radio frequency electric fields to cause nuclear magnetic resonance. The resulting spectra are discussed in terms of both large quadrupole fields created around the wire and hyperfine fields associated with the oscillating domain walls. This provides the experimental fact that the domain walls survive near the confined geometry despite of potential deformation, by which a localized magnetic resonance is allowed in electrical means.
In this paper we study in detail different types of topological solitons which are possible in bilayer quantum Hall systems at filling fraction $ν=1$ when spin degrees of freedom are included. Starting from a microscopic Hamiltonian we derive an effective energy functional for studying such excitations. The gauge invariance and $CP^{3}$ character of this energy fuctional and their consequences are examined. Then we identify permissible classes of finite energy solutions which are topologically non-trivial. We also numerically evaulate a representative solution in which a pseudospin (layer degr…
We describe a method to create fractional quantum Hall states of atoms confined in optical lattices. We show that the dynamics of the atoms in the lattice is analogous to the motion of a charged particle in a magnetic field if an oscillating quadrupole potential is applied together with a periodic modulation of the tunneling between lattice sites. We demonstrate that in a suitable parameter regime the ground state in the lattice is of the fractional quantum Hall type and we show how these states can be reached by melting a Mott insulator state in a super lattice potential. Finally we discuss t…
We revisit the physics of electron gas bilayers in the quantum Hall regime [Nature, 432 (2004) 691; Science, 305 (2004) 950], where transport and tunneling measurements provided evidence of a superfluid phase being present in the system. Previously, this behavior was explained by the possible formation of a BEC of excitons in the half-filled electron bilayers, where empty states play the role of holes. We discuss the fundamental difficulties with this scenario, and propose an alternative approach based on a treatment of the system as a pseudospin magnet. We show that the experimentally observe…
We present a new theoretical approach to the study of $ν=1$ quantum Hall bilayer that is based on a systematic mapping of the microscopic Hamiltonian to an anisotropic SU(4) spin model on a lattice. To study the properties of this model we generalize the Heisenberg model Schwinger boson mean field theory (SBMFT) of Arovas and Auerbach to spin models with anisotropy. We calculate the temperature dependence of experimentally observable quantities, including the spin magnetization, and the differential interlayer capacitance. Our theory represents a substantial improvement over the conventional H…
We predict non-mesoscopic oscillations in the orbital magnetic moment of a thin semiconductor ring in the quantum Hall effect regime. These oscillations, which occur as a function of magnetic field because of a competition between paramagnetic and diamagnetic currents in the ring, are a direct probe of the equilibrium current distribution in the nonuniform quantum Hall fluid. The amplitude of the oscillating moment in a thin ring with major radius $R$ and minor radius (half width) $a$ is approximately $a R e ω_{\rm c} /c$, where $ω_{\rm c}$ is the cyclotron frequency.
At total filling factor $ν=1$ quantum Hall bilayers can have an ordered ground state with spontaneous interlayer phase coherence. The ordered state is signaled experimentally by dramatically enhanced interlayer tunnel conductances at low bias voltages; at larger bias voltages inter-layer currents are similar to those of the disordered state. We associate this change in behavior with the existence of a critical current beyond which static inter-layer phase differences cannot be maintained, and examine the dependence of this critical current on sample geometry, phase stiffness, and the coherent …
Low-temperature screening properties of the inhomogeneous two-dimensional electron gas in a Hall bar subjected to a strong perpendicular magnetic field are explored using a self-consitent approach. An external oscillating modulation potential with an amplitude of the order of the cyclotron energy is added to the electron-confining background potential, and the resulting change of the self-consistent potential is investigated as a function of modulation strength, magnetic field, and temperature. The consequences of Landau-level pinning and the interplay of compressible and incompressible region…
We investigate theoretically the effect of a time dependent oscillating potential on the transport property of the Dirac Fermion through a monolayer graphene electrostatic barrier under the influence of the Rashba spin orbit interaction. The time dependent problem is solved in the frame work of the non perturbative Floquet approach. It is noted that the dynamic condition of the barrier may be controlled by tuning the Rashba parameter. Introduction of the spin orbit interaction causes splitting of the Fano resonance(FR), a characteristic feature in photon assisted tunneling. The separation betw…
Using exact diagonalization of bilayer quantum Hall systems at total filling factor $ν_T=1$ in the torus geometry, we show that there is a new long-range interlayer phase coherence due to spontaneous pseudospin spiral order at interlayer distances larger than the critical value at which the pseudospin ferromagnetic order is destroyed. We emphasize the distinction between the interlayer phase coherence and the pseudospin ferromagnetic order.
We consider a Dice model with Dirac cones intersected by a topologically flat band at the charge neutrality point and analyze the inelastic scattering of massless pseudospin-1 particles on a circular, gate-defined, oscillating barrier. Focusing on the resonant scattering regime at small energy of the incident wave, we calculate the reflection and transmission coefficients and derive explicit expressions for the time-dependent particle probability, current density and scattering efficiency within (Floquet) Dirac-Weyl theory, both in the near-field and the far-field. We discuss the importance of…
We report a new "dip" effect in the Hall resistance, R_{xy}, of a Si metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor in the quantum Hall effect regime. With increasing magnetic field, the Hall resistance moves from the plateau at Landau filling factor ν=6 directly to the plateau at ν=4, skipping the plateau at ν=5. However, when the filling factor approaches ν=5, the Hall resistance sharply "dives" to the value 1/5(h/e^2) characteristic of the ν=5 plateau, and then returns to 1/4(h/e^2). This is interpreted as a manifestation of the oscillating exchange enhancement of the valley splitting wh…
In fractional quantum Hall physics, the Hilbert space is projected to a single Landau level and the entire Hamiltonian consists of just the projected inter-electron interaction. Haldane's pseudopotential formalism has been an extremely useful tool both for understanding these interactions, and for understanding the quantum Hall states that result. In the current paper we consider the analogue of this pseudopotential construction that results from general M-body interactions rather than the usual (Coulomb) two-body interaction.
The Hartree-Fock paradigm of bilayer quantum Hall states with finite tunneling at filling factor $ν$=1 has full pseudospin ferromagnetic order with all the electrons in the lowest symmetric Landau level. Inelastic light scattering measurements of low energy spin excitations reveal major departures from the paradigm at relatively large tunneling gaps. The results indicate the emergence of a novel correlated quantum Hall state at $ν$=1 characterized by reduced pseudospin order. Marked anomalies occur in spin excitations when pseudospin polarization collapses by application of in-plane magnetic f…
The chiral two-dimensional electron gas in Landau levels $\left\vert N\right\vert >0$ of a Bernal-stacked graphene bilayer has a valley-pseudospin Ising quantum Hall ferromagnetic behavior at odd filling factors $ν_{N}=1,3$ of these fourfold degenerate states. At zero interlayer electrical bias, the ground state at these fillings is spin polarized and electrons occupy one valley or the other while a finite electrical bias produces a series of valley pseudospin-flip transitions. In this work, we extend the Ising behavior to chirally-stacked multilayer graphene and discuss the hysteretic behavio…
We present a theoretical study of gap opening in the zeroth Landau level in gapped graphene as a result of pseudo-Zeeman interaction. The applied magnetic field couples with the valley pseudospin degree of freedom of the charge carriers leading to the pseudo-Zeeman interaction. To investigate its role in transport at the Charge Neutrality Point (CNP), we study the integer quantum Hall effect (QHE) in gapped graphene in an angular magnetic field in the presence of pseudo-Zeeman interaction. Analytical expressions are derived for the Hall conductivity using Kubo-Greenwood formula. We also determ…
We investigate quasiparticles in bilayer quantum Hall systems around total filling factor nu =1 by current-pumped and resistively detected NMR. The measured Knight shift reveals that the spin component in the quasiparticle increases continuously with $Δ_{SAS}$. Combined with results for the pseudospin component obtained by activation gap measurements, this demonstrates that both spin and pseudospin are contained in a quasiparticle at intermediate $Δ_{SAS}$, providing evidence for the existence of the spin-pseudospin intermixed SU(4) skyrmion. Nuclear spin relaxation measurements show that the …
We study the hitherto un-addressed phenomenon of Quantum Hall Effect with a magnetic and electric fields oscillating in time with resonant frequencies. This phenomenon realizes an example of heterodyne device with the magnetic field acting as a driving and is analyzed in detail in its classical and quantum versions using Floquet theory. A bulk current flowing perpendicularly to the applied electric field is found, with a frequency shifted by integer multiples of the driving frequency. When the ratio of the cyclotron and driving frequency takes special values, the electron's classical trajector…
The study of spin-orbit coupling of photons has attracted much attention in recent years, and leads to many potential applications in optics. In the recently discovered metamaterial -- photonic crystals with Weyl points, the pseudospin-orbit coupling of photons bears a resemblance to the spin-orbit coupling. We study the pseudospin Hall effect of light in such metamaterials and find that during total reflection, the light beam experiences a transverse shift that is proportional to the pseudospin (or the monopole charge) of the Weyl point. As the spin Hall effect has inspired many works to expl…
We study the emergence of the quantum spin Hall (QSH) states for the pseudo-gap (PG) phase of Bi2212 bilayer system, assumed to be D-density wave(DDW) ordered, starting with a strong Rashba spin-orbit coupling(SOC) armed, and the time reversal symmetry (TRS) complaint Bloch Hamiltonian. The presence of strong SOC gives rise to non-trivial, spin-momentum locked spin texture tunable by electric field. The emergence of quantum anomalous Hall effect with TRS broken Chiral DDW Hamiltonian of Das Sarma et al. is found to be possible.
We delve into spin Hall effect in generic spin-orbit coupled two-dimensional fermionic systems. We derive analytically the spin-orbit force responsible for the spin Hall effect, and find that it has `Lorentz force'-like form. We also derive the pseudo magnetic field responsible for this force. We establish the relation between the spin Hall conductivity, flux quanta and this pseudo magnetic field, similar to the one between charge Hall conductivity, flux quanta and the external field. We also present an exact closed-form expression of the spin Hall conductivity in a generic spin-orbit coupled …
We present a mechamism why interlayer tunneling conductivity in coherent bilayer quantum Hall states at $ν=1$ is anomalously large, but finite in the recent experiment. According to the mechanism, pseudoSkyrmions causes the finite conductivity, although there exists an expectation that dissipationless tunneling current arises in the state. PseudoSkyrmions have an intrinsic polarization field perpendicular to the layers, which causes the dissipation. Using the mechanism we show that the large peak in the conductivity remains for weak parallel magnetic field, but decay rapidly after its strength…
In antiferromagnetic materials the order parameter exhibits resonant modes at frequencies that can be in the terahertz range, making them interesting components for spintronic devices. Here, it is shown that antiferromagnetic resonance can be excited using the inverse spin-Hall effect in a system consisting of an antiferromagnetic insulator coupled to a normal-metal waveguide. The time-dependent interplay between spin-torque, ac spin-accumulation and magnetic degrees of freedom is studied. It is found that the dynamics of the antiferromagnet effects the frequency-dependent conductivity of the …
The mean field composite Fermion (CF) picture successfully predicts angular momenta of multiplets forming the lowest energy band in fractional quantum Hall (FQH) systems. This success cannot be attributed to a cancellation between Coulomb and Chern-Simons interactions beyond the mean field, because these interactions have totally different energy scales. Rather, it results from the behavior of the Coulomb pseudopotential V(L) (pair energy as a function of pair angular momentum) in the lowest Landau level (LL). The class of short range repulsive pseudopotentials is defined that lead to short ra…
Excitation spectra in bilayer quantum Hall systems at total Landau-level filling $ν=2$ are studied by the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov approximation. The systems have the spin degrees of freedom in addition to the layer degrees of freedom described in terms of pseudospin. On the excitation spectra from spin-unpolarized and pseudospin-polarized ground state, this approximation fully preserves the spin rotational symmetry and thus can give not only spin-triplet but also spin-singlet excitations systematically. It is also found that the ground-state properties are well described by this approximation.
The pseudopotentials describing the interactions of quasiparticles in fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states are studied. Rules for the identification of incompressible quantum fluid ground states are found, based upon the form of the pseudopotentials. States belonging to the Jain sequence nu=n/(1+2pn), where n and p are integers, appear to be the only incompressible states in the thermodynamic limit, although other FQH hierarchy states occur for finite size systems. This explains the success of the composite Fermion picture.
The tilting angular dependence of the energy gap was measured in the bilayer quantum Hall state at the Landau level filling $ν=1$ by changing the density imbalance between the two layers. The observed gap behavior shows a continuous transformation from the bilayer balanced density state to the monolayer state. Even a sample with 33 K tunneling gap shows the same activation energy anomaly reported by Murphy {\it et al.}. We discuss a possible relation between our experimental results and the quantum Hall ferromagnet of spins and pseudospins.
We analyze bilayer quantum Hall ferromagnets, whose underlying symmetry group is SU(4). Spin-pseudospin coherence develops spontaneously when the total electron density is low enough. Quasiparticles are CP^3 skyrmions. One skyrmion induces charge modulations on both of the two layers. At the filling factor$ν=2/m$ one elementary excitation consists of a pair of skyrmions and its charge is $2e/m$. Recent experimental data due to Sawada et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 80}, 4534 (1998)] support this conclusion.
