We propose to use femtosecond direct laser writing technique to realize dielectric optical elements from photo-resist materials for the generation of structured light from purely geometrical phase transformations. This is illustrated by the fabrication and characterization of spin-to-orbital optical angular momentum couplers generating optical vortices of topological charge from 1 to 20. In addition, the technique is scalable and allows obtaining microscopic to macroscopic flat optics. These results thus demonstrate that direct 3D photopolymerization technology qualifies for the realization of spin-controlled geometric phase optical elements.

We also report the first single-mode Cr:ZnS depressed cladding buried waveguide laser manufactured by femtosecond laser writing. The laser yields 150 mW average power at 2272 nm wavelength with 11% slope efficiency. A depressed cladding waveguide with propagation loss of 0.62 dB/cm at 1030 nm allowed to obtain spectral broadening under femtosecond-pumping at 1030 nm.
We report on fabrication of tubular optical waveguides buried in ZBLAN glass based on transverse femtosecond laser direct writing. Irradiation in ZBLAN with focused femtosecond laser pulses leads to decrease of refractive index in the modified region. Tubular optical waveguides of variable mode areas are fabricated by forming the four sides of the cladding with slit-shaped femtosecond laser pulses, ensuring single mode waveguiding with a mode field dimension as small as ~ 4 μm.

The processing mainly consists of formation of freestanding microdisks by femtosecond laser direct writing and subsequent wet chemical etching. CO2 laser annealing is followed to smooth the microcavity surface. Microcavities with arbitrary tilting angle, lateral and vertical positioning are demonstrated, and the quality (Q)-factor of a typical microcavity is measured to be up to …
We demonstrate the first buried optical waveguides in diamond using focused femtosecond laser pulses. The properties of nitrogen vacancy centers are preserved in the waveguides, making them promising for diamond-based magnetometers or quantum information systems.
We study analytically the polarization behaviour of directional couplers composed of birefringent waveguides, showing that they can induce polarization transformations that depend on the specific input-output path considered. On the basis of this study, we propose and demonstrate experimentally, by femtosecond laser writing, directional couplers that are free from this problem and also yield a polarization independent power-splitting ratio. More in detail, we devise two different approaches to realize such devices: the first one is based on local birefringence engineering, while the second one…

This work represents a particular application of waveguide fabricated by femtosecond laser micromachining technology. More specifically, we report the development of an optical modulator based on the fabrication of single-mode optical waveguide structures buried in X-cut lithium niobate crystal with the femtosecond laser direct writing method. Here, change in refractive index profile is measured using near field intensity profile measurement method at optimized writing conditions. It has been observed that the change refractive index (Δn) is in the range of 10-4. Finally, the behavior of femto…
We investigate the interaction of trains of femtosecond microjoule laser pulses with dielectric materials by means of a multi-scale model. Our theoretical predictions are directly confronted with experimental observations in soda-lime glass. We show that due to the low heat conductivity, a significant fraction of the laser energy can be accumulated in the absorption region. Depending on the pulse repetition rate, the material can be heated to high temperatures even though the single pulse energy is too low to induce a significant material modification. Regions heated above the glass transition…
Understanding the physical mechanisms of the refractive index modulation induced by femtosecond laser writing is crucial for tailoring the properties of the resulting optical waveguides. In this work we apply polarized Raman spectroscopy to study the origin of stress-induced waveguides in diamond, produced by femtosecond laser writing. The change in the refractive index induced by the femtosecond laser in the crystal is derived from the measured stress in the waveguides. The results help to explain the waveguide polarization sensitive guiding mechanism, as well as providing a technique for the…
Laser-induced modification of transparent solids by intense femtosecond laser pulses allows fast integration of nanophotonic and nanofluidic devices with controlled optical properties. So far, the local and dynamic nature of the interactions between plasma and light needed to correctly explain nanograting fabrication on dielectric surfaces has been missing in the theoretical models. With our numerical approach, we show that a self-consistent dynamic treatment of the plasma formation and its interaction with light triggers an ultrafast reconfiguration of the periodic plasma patterns on a field-…
The mechanism of ablation of solids by intense femtosecond laser pulses is described in an explicit analytical form. It is shown that at high intensities when the ionization of the target material is complete before the end of the pulse, the ablation mechanism is the same for both metals and dielectrics. The physics of this new ablation regime involves ion acceleration in the electrostatic field caused by charge separation created by energetic electrons escaping from the target. The formulae for ablation thresholds and ablation rates for metals and dielectrics, combining the laser and target p…
Diamond's nitrogen vacancy (NV) center is an optically active defect with long spin coherence times, showing great potential for both efficient nanoscale magnetometry and quantum information processing schemes. Recently, both the formation of buried 3D optical waveguides and high quality single NVs in diamond were demonstrated using the versatile femtosecond laser-writing technique. However, until now, combining these technologies has been an outstanding challenge. In this work, we fabricate laser written photonic waveguides in quantum grade diamond which are aligned to within micron resolutio…
We have investigated the effect of the laser wavelength on the fabrication of optical waveguides and tracks of modified material via direct laser writing inside fused silica. The size of the laserinscribed tracks, the material modification thresholds, the structural changes, and the waveguide writing energy range show a strong dependence on laser wavelengths ranging from ultraviolet to near-infrared. We used numerical simulations that consider the laser-excited electron plasma dynamics (via multiple rate equations) along with Gaussian beams theory to calculate the size of the laser-affected vo…
We present a rotated polarization directional coupler (RPDC) on a photonic chip. We demonstrate a double-track approach to modify the distribution of refractive index between adjacent tracks and form a single waveguide with arbitrary birefringent optical axis. We construct a RPDC with the two axis-rotated waveguides coupled in a strong regime. The obtained extinction ratios on average are about 16dB and 20dB for the corresponding orthogonal polarizations. We perform the reconstruction of Stokes vector to test the projection performance of our RPDC, and observe the average fidelities up to 98.1…
The formation of an electron-hole plasma during the interaction of intense femtosecond laser pulses with transparent solids lies at the heart of femtosecond laser processing. Advanced micro- and nanomachining applications require improved control over the excitation characteristics. Here, we relate the emission of low-order harmonics to the strong laser-field-induced plasma formation. Together with a measurement of the total plasma density we identify the contribution of two competing ionization mechanisms - strong-field and electron-impact ionization.
Femtosecond laser exposure in the non-ablative regime induces a variety of bulk structural modifications, in which anisotropy may depend on the polarization of the writing beam. In this work, we investigate the correlation between polarization state and stress anisotropy. In particular, we introduce a methodology that allows for rapid analysis and visualization of laser-induced stress anisotropy in glasses and crystals. Using radial and azimuthal polarization, we also demonstrate stress states that are nearly isotropic.
Femtosecond laser writing is applied to form Bragg grating waveguides in the diamond bulk. Type II waveguides are integrated with a single pulse point-by-point periodic laser modification positioned towards the edge of the waveguide core. These photonic devices, operating in the telecommunications band, allow for simultaneous optical waveguiding and narrowband reflection from a 4th order grating. This fabrication technology opens the way towards advanced 3D photonic networks in diamond for a range of applications.
Electromagnetic radiation within the terahertz (THz) frequency range is of great interest for applications in remote sensing and time-domain spectroscopy. The laser-induced plasmas are promising mediums for generating THz radiation. It has been recently reported that focusing femtosecond Bessel pulses inside dielectrics induces a high aspect ratio over-critical plasmas. Here we show that the intense resonantly driven electrostatic fields at the so-called critical surface lead to THz radiation emission. Through three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulation and analytical derivation, we have inv…
We propose a novel approach for efficient tuning of optical properties of a high refractive index subwavelength nanoparticle with a magnetic Mie-type resonance by means of femtosecond laser irradiation. This concept is based on ultrafast photo-injection of dense (>10^20 cm^-3) electron-hole plasma within such nanoparticle, drastically changing its transient dielectric permittivity. This allows to manipulate by both electric and magnetic nanoparticle responses, resulting in dramatic changes of its scattering diagram and scattering cross section. We experimentally demonstrate 20 % tuning of refl…
We propose an efficient method to determine the effective refractive index of step-index optical fibers from the visible to the mid-IR and thus allowing to infer their dispersive properties over a broad spectral range. The validity of the method, based on the writing of an array of fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) with known periods using the fs scanning phase mask technique, is first confirmed with a standard silica fiber, then applied to various fluoride glass fibers to determine their effective refractive index and dispersion over more than three octaves, i.e. from 550 to 4800 nm.
We report on femtosecond laser writing of single mode optical waveguides in chalcogenide Gallium Lanthanum Sulphide (GLS) glass. A multiscan fabrication process was employed to create waveguides with symmetric single mode guidance and low insertion losses at 800 nm wavelength, compatible with Ti:Sapphire ultrafast lasers. μRaman and X-Ray microanalysis were used to elucidate the origin of the laser-induced refractive index change in GLS. Nonlinear refractive index measurements of the waveguides were performed by finding the optical switching parameters of a directional coupler, demonstrating t…
An influence of pass-through optics on femtosecond laser pulse filamentation in ambient air is analyzed for the first time both experimentally and numerically. Propagation of high-power femtosecond laser pulse through solid optical elements introduces spatiotemporal phase modulation due to the Kerr effect. This modulation may have a strong ef-fect on the pulse filamentation in air. We demonstrated that the phase modulation obtained in the thin pass-through dielectric plate reduces the distance to the filament onset and increases the plasma channel length
Second-harmonic emission at a frequency that is twice the laser frequency is an important diagnostic for nonlinear laser-plasma interaction. It is forbidden for centrosymmetric materials such as the bulk of sapphire. The symmetry, however, can be broken by dielectric discontinuities as a result of plasma generation inside a solid dielectric. In the present work, we explore the basic characteristics of experimentally observed second-harmonic emission during focusing a femtosecond Bessel beam inside sapphire. We employ three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations and the Helmholtz wave equatio…
We theoretically investigate the dynamical Franz-Keldysh effect in femtosecond time resolution, that is, the time-dependent modulation of a dielectric function at around the band gap under an irradiation of an intense laser field. We develop a pump-probe formalism in two distinct approaches: first-principles simulation based on real-time time-dependent density functional theory and analytic consideration of a simple two-band model. We find that, while time-average modulation may be reasonably described by the static Franz-Keldysh theory, a remarkable phase shift is found to appear between the …

We report three-dimensional laser microfabrication, which enables microstructuring of materials on the scale of 0.2-1 micrometers. The two different types of microfabrication demonstrated and discussed in this work are based on holographic recording, and light-induced damage in transparent dielectric materials. Both techniques use nonlinear optical excitation of materials by ultrashort laser pulses (duration < 1 ps).
Femtosecond laser pulse systems allows to modify in a precise and permanent way the optical properties of atransparent materials. This process enables the direct writing of guiding structures in materials, commonlyknown as waveguides, which are the base for optical circuit fabrication. It is our interest to study the main characteristics of the waveguides manufactured by the laser micro-machining technique. Here, an analysis of the resulting refractive index profile has been carried out. Thischaracteristic is essential for the design and simulation of integrated optical circuits. In particular …
Experimental and theoretical studies of laser-induced breakdown in dielectrics provide conflicting conclusions about the possibility to trigger ionization avalanche on the sub-picosecond time scale and the relative importance of carrier-impact ionization over field ionization. On the one hand, current models based on single ionization-rate equations do not account for the gradual heating of the charge carriers which, for short laser pulses, might not be sufficient to start an avalanche. On the other hand, models based on multiple rate equations that track the carriers kinetics rely on several …
We quantify the dependence of the single-shot ablation threshold on the angle of incidence and polarization of a femtosecond laser beam, for three dissimilar solid-state materials: a metal, a dielectric and a semiconductor. Using the constant, linear value of the index of refraction, we calculate the laser fluence transmitted through the air-material interface at the point of ablation threshold. We show that, in spite of the highly nonlinear ionization dynamics involved in the ablation process, the so defined transmitted threshold fluence is universally independent of the angle of incidence an…
Dispersive wave emission (DWE) in gas-filled hollow-core dielectric waveguides is a promising source of tuneable coherent and broadband radiation, but so far the generation of few-femtosecond pulses using this technique has not been demonstrated. Using in-vacuum frequency-resolved optical gating, we directly characterise tuneable 3fs pulses in the deep ultraviolet generated via DWE. Through numerical simulations, we identify that the use of a pressure gradient in the waveguide is critical for the generation of short pulses.

Period of gratings of 0.8 micrometers and groove width of 250 nm were achieved using fs-laser ablation at 343 nm wavelength. Phase and intensity analysis of optical vortex generators was carried out at 633 nm wavelength and confirmed the designed performance. Efficiency of spin-orbital conversion of th…
Ultrafast, femtosecond laser pulse interaction with dielectric materials has shown them to have significantly higher laser fluence threshold requirements, as compared to metals and semiconductors, for laser material modification, such as laser ablation. Examples of dielectrics are crystalline materials such as quartz and sapphire, and amorphous glasses. The interaction between femtosecond laser pulses, at a wavelength with negligible linear absorption, and a dielectric has been found to be weak, and multiple pulse irradiation is therefore typically used in order to see significant and quantifi…
Femtosecond laser writing is a powerful technique that allows rapid and cost-effective fabrication of photonic integrated circuits with unique three-dimensional geometries. In particular, the possibility to reconfigure such devices by thermo-optic phase shifters represents a paramount feature, exploited to produce adaptive and programmable circuits. However, the scalability is strongly limited by the flaws of current thermal phase shifters, which require hundreds of milliwatts to operate and exhibit large thermal crosstalk. In this work, thermally-insulating three-dimensional microstructures a…

The writing parameters for the minimum propagation loss of 1.47 dB/cm are 0.36 uJ pulse energy and 50 um/s scanning speed.
Nonlinear optical processes in whispering gallery mode (WGM) microresonators have attracted much attention. Owing to the strong confinement of light in a small volume, a WGM microresonator can dramatically boost the strength of light field, thereby promoting the nonlinear interaction between the light and the resonator material. However, realization of efficient nonlinear parametric process in microresonators is a challenging issue. The major difficulty is to simultaneously ensure the phase matching condition and a coherent multiple resonance condition for all the waves participating in the no…

Exposure of metal surfaces to multiple ultrashort laser pulses under certain conditions leads to the formation of well-defined periodic surface structures. We show how the period of such structures in steel can be tuned over a wide range by controlling the complex interaction mechanisms triggered in the material. Amongst the different irradiation parameters that influence the properties of the induced structures, the angle of incidence of the laser beam occupies a prominent role. We present an experimental and theoretical investigation of this angle dependence in steel upon irradiation with la…
The creation of high energy density ($\gtrsim10^6$ joules per cm$^3$) over-critical plasmas in a large volume has essential applications in the study of warm dense matter, being present in the hot cores of stars and planets. It was recently shown that femtosecond Bessel beams enable creating over-critical plasmas inside sapphire with sub-wavelength radius and several tens of micrometers in length. Here, the dependence of field structure and absorption mechanism on the plasma density transverse profile are investigated by performing self-consistent Particle-In-Cell (PIC) simulations. Laser-induced plasma formation and subsequent relaxation in solid dielectrics is the precursor to structural modifications that are accompanied by a permanent alteration of material properties. The decay of the electron-hole plasma through distinct relaxation channels determines the properties of the resulting modification. Based on an experimental arrangement combining a time-resolved transmission measurement with a cross-phase modulation measurement, we isolate the plasma formation and relaxation dynamics in the bulk of amorphous fused silica excited by femtosecond short-wavelength infrared …
Tunable coherent light sources operating in the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) region in 100-200-nm (6-12 eV) wavelength range have important spectroscopic applications in many research fields, including time-resolved angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Recent advances in laser technology have enabled the upconversion of visible femtosecond lasers to the vacuum and extreme ultraviolet regions. However, the complexity of their experimental setups and the scarcity of bulk nonlinear crystals for VUV generation have hampered its widespread use. Here, we propose the use of a free-standing …

A wavelength-degenerate pump-probe spectroscopy is used to study the ultrafast dynamics of strong-field ionization in femtosecond-laser subwavelength-structured fused silica. The comparative spectra demonstrate that femtosecond-laser subwavelength structuring always give rise to great enhancement for strong-field ionization as well as third-order nonlinear optical effects, which is the direct evidence of great local field enhancement in subwavelength apertures of fs-laser highly-excited surface. In short, the study shows the prominent subwavelength spatial effect of strong-field ionization in …
