We study the capitulation of $2$-ideal classes of an infinite family of imaginary biquadratic number fields consisting of fields $k =Q(\sqrt{pq_1q_2}, i)$, where $i=\sqrt{-1}$ and $q_1\equiv q_2\equiv-p\equiv-1 \pmod 4$ are different primes. For each of the three quadratic extensions $K/k$ inside the absolute genus field $k^{(*)}$ of $k$, we compute the capitulation kernel of $K/k$. Then we deduce that each strongly ambiguous class of $k/Q(i)$ capitulates already in $k^{(*)}$.
We study the capitulation of $2$-ideal classes of an infinite family of imaginary bicyclic biquadratic number fields consisting of fields $\mathbf{k} =\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{p_1p_2q}, i)$, where $i=\sqrt{-1}$ and $p_1\equiv p_2\equiv-q\equiv1 \pmod 4$ are different primes. For each of the three quadratic extensions $\mathbf{K}/\mathbf{k}$ inside the absolute genus field $\mathbf{k}^{(*)}$ of $\mathbf{k}$, we compute the capitulation kernel of $\mathbf{K}/\mathbf{k}$. Then we deduce that each strongly ambiguous class of $\mathbf{k}/\mathbb{Q}(i)$ capitulates already in $\mathbf{k}^{(*)}$, which is sm…
Building on Bosca's method, we extend to tame ray class groups the results on capitulation of ideals of a number field by composition with abelian extensions of a subfield first studied by Gras. More precisely, for every extension of number fields K/k, where at least one infinite place splits completely, and every squarefree divisor m of K, we prove that there exist infinitely many abelian extensions F/k such that the ray class group mod m of K capitulates in KF. As a consequence we generalize to tame ray class groups the results of Kurihara on triviality of class groups for maximal abelian pr…
Let $p_1$ and $p_2$ be two primes such that $p_1\equiv p_2\equiv1 \pmod4$ and at least two of the three elements $\{(\frac{2}{p_1}), (\frac{2}{p_2}), (\frac{p_1}{p_2})\}$ are equal to -1. Put $i=\sqrt{-1}$, $d=2p_1p_2$ and $k =Q(\sqrt{d}, i)$. Let $k_2^{(1)}$ be the Hilbert 2-class field of $k$ and $k^{(*)}=Q(\sqrt{p_1},\sqrt{p_2},\sqrt 2, i)$ be its genus field. Let $C_{k,2}$ denote the 2-part of the class group of $k$. The unramified abelian extensions of $k$ are $K_1=k(\sqrt{p_1})$, $K_2=k(\sqrt{p_2})$, $K_3=k(\sqrt{2})$ and $k^{(*)}$. Our goal is to study the capitulation problem of the 2-…
Cremona, Mazur, and others have studied what they call visibility of elements of Shafarevich-Tate groups of elliptic curves. The analogue for an abelian number field $K$ is capitulation of ideal classes of $K$ in the minimal cyclotomic field containing $K$. We develop a new method to study capitulation and use it and classical methods to compute data with the hope of gaining insight into the elliptic curve case. For example, the numerical data for number fields suggests that visibility of nontrivial Shafarevich-Tate elements might be much more common for elliptic curves of positive rank than f…
For a number field K and a prime number p we denote by BP\_K the compositum of the cyclic p-extensions of K embeddable in a cyclic p-extension of arbitrary large degree. Then BP\_K is p-ramified (= unramified outside p) and is a finite extension of the compositum K~ of the Z\_p-extensions of K.We study the transfer map j\_(L/K) (as a capitulation map of ideal classes) for the Bertrandias-Payan module bp\_K:=Gal(BP\_K/K~) in a p-extension L/K (p\textgreater{}2, assuming the Leopoldt conjecture). In the cyclic case of degree p, j\_(L/K) is injective except if L/K is kummerian, p-ramified, non gl…
We characterize the abelian varieties arising as absolutely simple factors of GL2-type varieties over a number field k. In order to obtain this result, we study a wider class of abelian varieties: the k-varieties A/k satisfying that $\End_k^0(A)$ is a maximal subfield of $\End_k^0(A)$. We call them Ribet-Pyle varieties over k. We see that every Ribet-Pyle variety over k is isogenous over $\bar k$ to a power of an abelian k-variety and, conversely, that every abelian k-variety occurs as the absolutely simple factor of some Ribet-Pyle variety over k. We deduce from this correspondence a precise …
The isomorphism type of the Galois group G of finite 3-class field towers of quadratic number fields with 3-class group of type (9,9) is determined by means of Artin patterns which contain information on the transfer of 3-classes to unramified abelian 3-extensions. First, as an approximation of the group G, its metabelianization M=G/G", which is isomorphic to the Galois group of the second Hilbert 3-class field, is sought by sifting the SmallGroups library with the aid of pattern recognition. In cases with order |M|>3^8, the SmallGroups database must be extended by means of the p-group generat…
Let L/K be an extension of absolutely abelian number fields of equal conductor, n. The image of the ring of integers of L under the trace map from L to K is an ideal in the ring of integers in K. We compute the absolute norm of this ideal exactly for any such L/K, thereby sharpening an earlier result of Kurt Girstmair. Furthermore, we define an "adjusted trace map" that allows the proof of Leopoldt's Theorem to be reduced to the cyclotomic case.

Given a fixed prime number \(p\), the multiplet of abelian type invariants of the \(p\)-class groups of all unramified cyclic degree \(p\) extensions of a number field \(K\) is called its IPAD (index-\(p\) abelianization data). These invariants have proved to be a valuable information for determining the Galois group \(G_p^2\) of the second Hilbert \(p\)-class field and the \(p\)-capitulation type \(\varkappa\) of \(K\). For \(p=3\) and a number field \(K\) with elementary \(p\)-class group of rank two, all possible IPADs are given in the complete form of several infinite sequences. Iterated I…
Let L/K be an extension of number fields where L/\Q is abelian. We define such an extension to be Leopoldt if the ring of integers O_L of L is free over the associated order A_L/K. Furthermore we define an abelian number field K to be Leopoldt if every finite extension L/K with L/Q abelian is Leopoldt in the sense above. Previous results of Leopoldt, Chan & Lim, Bley, and Byott & Lettl culminate in the proof that the n-th cyclotomic field Q^(n) is Leopoldt for every n. In this paper, we generalize this result by giving more examples of Leopoldt extensions and fields, along with explicit genera…
Consider an absolutely simple abelian variety X over a number field K. If the absolute endomorphism ring of X is commutative and satisfies certain parity conditions, then the reduction X_p is absolutely simple for almost all p. Conversely, if the absolute endomorphism ring of X is noncommutative, then X_p is reducible for p in a set of positive density.
We prove that for every field k and every positive integer n, there exists an absolutely simple n-dimensional abelian variety over k. We also prove an asymptotic result for finite fields: For every finite field k and positive integer n, we let S(k,n) denote the fraction of the isogeny classes of n-dimensional abelian varieties over k that consist of absolutely simple ordinary abelian varieties. Then for every n, the quantity S(F_q,n) approaches 1 as q approaches infinity over the prime powers.
We partially answer, in terms of monodromy, Murty and Patankar's question: Given an absolutely simple abelian variety over a number field, does it have simple specializations at a set of places of positive Dirichlet density? The answer is based on the classification of pairs (G,V) consisting of a semi-simple algebraic group G over a non-archimedean local field and an absolutely irreducible representation V of G such that G admits a maximal torus acting irreducibly on V.
Let $p_1 \equiv p_2 \equiv5\pmod8$ be different primes. Put $i=\sqrt{-1}$ and $d=2p_1p_2$, then the bicyclic biquadratic field $k=Q(\sqrt{d}, \sqrt{-1})$ has an elementary abelian 2-class group of rank $3$. In this paper we determine the nilpotency class, the coclass, the generators and the structure of the non-abelian Galois group $\mathrm{Gal}(k_2^{(2)}/k)$ of the second Hilbert 2-class field $k_2^{(2)}$ of $k$. We study the capitulation problem of the 2-classes of $k$ in its seven unramified quadratic extensions $K_i$ and in its seven unramified bicyclic biquadratic extensions $L_i$.
Consider an absolutely simple abelian variety A defined over a number field K. For most places v of K, we study how the reduction A_v of A modulo v splits up to isogeny. Assuming the Mumford-Tate conjecture for A and possibly increasing K, we will show that A_v is isogenous to the m-th power of an absolutely simple abelian variety for all places v of K away from a set of density 0, where m is an integer depending only on the endomorphism ring End(A_Kbar). This proves many cases, and supplies justification, for a conjecture of Murty and Patankar. Under the same assumptions, we will also describ…
This is an introduction to the author theory of cyclic p-extensions of an absolutely unramified complete discrete valuation field K with arbitrary residue field of characteristic p. In this theory a homomorphism is constructed from the p-part of the group of characters of K to Witt vectors over its residue field.
For each Sophie Germain prime $g \geq 5,$ we construct an absolutely simple polarized abelian variety of dimension $g$ over a finite field, whose automorphism group is a cyclic group of order $4g+2$. We also provide a description on the asymptotic behavior of prime numbers that are related to our construction.
Fix a prime number $\ell$. Graphs of isogenies of degree a power of $\ell$ are well-understood for elliptic curves, but not for higher-dimensional abelian varieties. We study the case of absolutely simple ordinary abelian varieties over a finite field. We analyse graphs of so-called $\mathfrak l$-isogenies, resolving that they are (almost) volcanoes in any dimension. Specializing to the case of principally polarizable abelian surfaces, we then exploit this structure to describe graphs of a particular class of isogenies known as $(\ell, \ell)$-isogenies: those whose kernels are maximal isotropi…
We study the special fibers of a certain class of absolutely simple abelian varieties over number fields with endomorphism rings $\bz$ and possessing $l$-adic monodromy groups of the least possible rank. We also study the Dirichlet density of the places at which the possible reductions occur and confirm a special case of a broader conjecture for the splitting of reductions of abelian varieties over number fields.
The p-class tower $F_p^\infty(k)$ of a number field k is its maximal unramified pro-p extension. It is considered to be known when the p-tower group, that is the Galois group $G:=Gal(F_p^\infty(k)/k)$, can be identified by an explicit presentation. The main intention of this article is to characterize assigned finite 3-groups uniquely by abelian quotient invariants of subgroups of finite index, and to provide evidence of actual realizations of these groups by 3-tower groups G of real quadratic fields $K=Q(\sqrt{d})$ with 3-capitulation type (0122) or (2034).
Let K be a number field and A/K be a polarized abelian variety with absolutely trivial endomorphism ring. We show that if the Neron model of A/K has at least one fiber with potential toric dimension one, then for almost all rational primes ell, the Galois group of the splitting field of the ell-torsion of A is GSp_{2g}(Z/ell).
We provide an easy method for the construction of characteristic polynomials of simple ordinary abelian varieties ${\mathcal A}$ of dimension $g$ over a finite field ${\mathbb F}_q$, when $q\ge 4$ and $2g=ρ^{b-1}(ρ-1)$ for some prime $ρ\ge 5$, with $b\ge 1$. Moreover, we show that ${\mathcal A}$ is absolutely simple if $b=1$ and $ρ=5$, but ${\mathcal A}$ is not absolutely simple for arbitrary $ρ$ with $b>1$.
Let $A$ be an absolutely simple abelian variety without (potential) complex multiplication, defined over the number field $K$. Suppose that either $\dim A=2$ or $A$ is of $\operatorname{GL}_2$-type: we give an explicit bound $\ell_0(A,K)$ such that, for every prime $\ell>\ell_0(A,K)$, the image of the absolute Galois group of $K$ in $\operatorname{Aut}(T_\ell(A))$ is as large as it is allowed to be by endomorphisms and polarizations.
Let $k$ be a totally real field, and let $A/k$ be an absolutely irreducible, polarized Abelian variety of odd, prime dimension whose endomorphisms are all defined over $k$. Then the only strictly compatible families of abstract, absolutely irreducible representations of $\gal(\ov{k}/k)$ coming from $A$ are tensor products of Tate twists of symmetric powers of two-dimensional $λ$-adic representations plus field automorphisms. The main ingredients of the proofs are the work of Borel and Tits on the `abstract' homomorphisms of almost simple algebraic groups, plus the work of Shimura on the fields…
Let $K$ be a number field, $A/K$ be an absolutely simple abelian variety of CM type, and $\ell$ be a prime number. We give explicit bounds on the degree over $K$ of the division fields $K(A[\ell^n])$, and when $A$ is an elliptic curve we also describe the full Galois group of $K(A_{\text{tors}})/K$. This makes explicit previous results of Serre and Ribet, and strengthens a theorem of Banaszak, Gajda and Krasoń. Our bounds are especially sharp in case the CM type of $A$ is nondegenerate.
Let $K$ be a complete, discretely valued field with finite residue field and $G_K$ its absolute Galois group. The subject of this note is the study of the set of positive integers $d$ for which there exists an absolutely irreducible $\ell$-adic representation of $G_K$ of dimension $d$ with rational traces on inertia. Our main result is that non-Sophie Germain primes are not in this set when the residue characteristic of $K$ is $> 3$. The result stated in the title is a special case.
Given an abelian, CM extension K of any totally real number field k, we consider two conjectures `of Stark type'. The `Integrality Conjecture' concerns the image of a p-adic map `\mathfrak{s}_{K/k,S}' determined by the minus-part of the S-truncated equivariant L-function for K/k at s=1. It is connected to the Equivariant Tamagawa Number Conjecture of Burns and Flach. The `Congruence Conjecture' says that \mathfrak{s}_{K/k,S} gives an explicit reciprocity law for the element predicted by the corresponding Rubin-Stark Conjecture for K^+/k. We study the general properties of these conjectures and…
A celebrated theorem of Bogomolov asserts that the $\ell$-adic Lie algebra attached to the Galois action on the Tate module of an abelian variety over a number field contains all homotheties. This is not the case in characteristic $p$: a "counterexample" is provided by an ordinary elliptic curve defined over a finite field. In this note we discuss (and explicitly construct) more interesting examples of "non-constant" absolutely simple abelian varieties (without homotheties) over global fields in characteristic $p$.
Let k be a number field, p$\ge$2 a prime and S a set of tame or wild finite places of k. We call K/k a totally S-ramified cyclic p-tower if Gal(K/k)=Z/p^NZ and if S non-empty is totally ramified. Using analogues of Chevalley's formula (Gras, Proc. Math. Sci. 127(1) (2017)),we give an elementary proof of a stability theorem (Theorem 3.1 for generalized p-class groups X\_n of the layers k\_n$\le$K:let $λ$=max(0, \#S-1-$ρ$) given in Definition 1.1; then\#X\_n = \#X\_0 x p^{$λ$ n} for all n in [0,N], if and only if \#X\_1=\#X\_0 x p^$λ$. This improves the case $λ$ = 0 of Fukuda (1994), Li--Ouyang-…
We prove that if a linear group $Γ\subset \mathrm{GL}_n(K)$ over a field $K$ of characteristic zero is boundedly generated by semi-simple (diagonalizable) elements then it is virtually solvable. As a consequence, one obtains that infinite $S$-arithmetic subgroups of absolutely almost simple anisotropic algebraic groups over number fields are never boundedly generated. Our proof relies on Laurent's theorem from Diophantine geometry and properties of generic elements.
The goal of this paper is to explain how a simple but apparently new fact of linear algebra together with the cohomological interpretation of L-functions allows one to produce many examples of L-functions over function fields vanishing to high order at the center point of their functional equation. The main application is that for every prime p and every integer g>0 there are absolutely simple abelian varieties of dimension g over Fp(t) for which the BSD conjecture holds and which have arbitrarily large rank.
For an abelian variety $A$ over a number field $F$, we prove that the average rank of the quadratic twists of $A$ is bounded, under the assumption that the multiplication-by-3 isogeny on $A$ factors as a composition of 3-isogenies over $F$. This is the first such boundedness result for an absolutely simple abelian variety $A$ of dimension greater than one. In fact, we exhibit such twist families in arbitrarily large dimension and over any number field. In dimension one, we deduce that if $E/F$ is an elliptic curve admitting a 3-isogeny, then the average rank of its quadratic twists is bounded.…
Let $k$ be a field that is finitely generated over the field of rational numbers and $Br(k)$ the Brauer group of $k$. Let $X$ be an absolutely irreducible smooth projective variety over $k$, let $Br(X)$ be the cohomological Brauer-Grothendieck group of $X$ and $Br_0(X)$ the image of $Br(k)$ in $Br(X)$. We write $Br_1(X)$ for the subgroup of elements in $Br(X)$ that become trivial after replacing $k$ by its algebraic closure. We prove that $Br(X)/Br_0(X)$ is finite if $X$ is a $K3$ surface. When $X$ is (a principal homogeneous space of) an abelian variety over $k$ then we prove that $Br(X)/Br_1…

Let f be a weight two newform for Gamma_1(N) without complex multiplication. In this article we study the conductor of the absolutely simple factors B of the variety A_f over certain number fields L. The strategy we follow is to compute the restriction of scalars Res_{L/\Q}(B), and then to apply Milne's formula for the conductor of the restriction of scalars. In this way we obtain an expression for the local exponents of the conductor N_L(B). Under some hypothesis it is possible to give global formulas relating this conductor with N. For instance, if N is squarefree we find that N_L(B) belongs…
Motivated by our arithmetic applications, we required some tools that might be of independent interest. Let $\mathcal E$ be an absolutely irreducible group scheme of rank $p^4$ over $\mathbb Z_p$. We provide a complete description of the Honda systems of $p$-divisible groups $\mathcal G$ such that $\mathcal G[p^{n+1}]/\mathcal G[p^n] \simeq \mathcal E$ for all $n$. Then we find a bound for the abelian conductor of the second layer $\mathbb Q_p(\mathcal G[p^2])/\mathbb Q_p(\mathcal G[p])$, stronger in our case than can be deduced from Fontaine's bound. Let $π\!: \, {\rm Sp}_{2g}(\mathbb Z_p) \t…
In this article we define and study a zeta function $ζ_G$ - similar to the Hasse-Weil zeta function - which enumerates absolutely irreducible representations over finite fields of a (profinite) group $G$. The zeta function converges on a complex half-plane for all UBERG groups and admits an Euler product decomposition. Our motivation for this investigation is the observation that the reciprocal value $ζ_G(k)^{-1}$ at a positive integer $k$ coincides with the probability that $k$ random elements generate the completed group ring of $G$. The explicit formulas obtained so far suggest that $ζ_G$ i…
We present three families of pairs of geometrically non-isomorphic curves whose Jacobians are isomorphic to one another as unpolarized abelian varieties. Each family is parametrized by an open subset of P^1. The first family consists of pairs of genus-2 curves whose equations are given by simple expressions in the parameter; the curves in this family have reducible Jacobians. The second family also consists of pairs of genus-2 curves, but generically the curves in this family have absolutely simple Jacobians. The third family consists of pairs of genus-3 curves, one member of each pair being a…
