We introduce a definition for \emph{Families of Optimal Binary Non-MDS Erasure Codes} for $[n, k]$ codes over $GF(2)$, and propose an algorithm for finding those families by using hill climbing techniques over Balanced XOR codes. Due to the hill climbing search, those families of codes have always better decoding probability than the codes generated in a typical Random Linear Network Coding scenario, i.e., random linear codes. We also show a surprising result that for small values of $k$, the decoding probability of our codes in $GF(2)$ is very close to the decoding probability of the codes obtained by Random Linear Network Coding but in the higher finite field $GF(4)$.
Partial MDS (PMDS) and sector-disk (SD) codes are classes of erasure codes that combine locality with strong erasure correction capabilities. We construct PMDS and SD codes where each local code is a bandwidth-optimal regenerating MDS code. The constructions require significantly smaller field size than the only other construction known in literature.
Partial MDS (PMDS) and sector-disk (SD) codes are classes of erasure correcting codes that combine locality with strong erasure correction capabilities. We construct PMDS and SD codes with local regeneration where each local code is a bandwidth-optimal regenerating MDS code. In the event of a node failure, these codes reduce both, the number of servers that have to be contacted as well as the amount of network traffic required for the repair process. The constructions require significantly smaller field size than the only other construction known in literature. Further, we present a constructi…
We consider the following generalization of an $(n,k)$ MDS code for application to an erasure channel with additive noise. Like an MDS code, our code is required to be decodable from any $k$ received symbols, in the absence of noise. In addition, we require that the noise margin for every allowable erasure pattern be as large as possible and that the code satisfy a power constraint. In this paper we derive performance bounds and present a few designs for low rank lattice codes for an additive noise channel with erasures.
This paper presents a new construction of error correcting codes which achieves optimal recovery of a streaming source over a packet erasure channel. The channel model considered is the sliding window erasure model, with burst and arbitrary losses, introduced by Badr et al. . Recently, two independents works by Fong et al. and Krishnan and Kumar have identified optimal streaming codes within this framework. In this paper, we introduce streaming code when the rate of the code is at least 1/2. Our proposed construction is explicit and systematic, uses off-the-shelf maximum distance separable (MD…
An $(m,n,a,b)$-tensor code consists of $m\times n$ matrices whose columns satisfy `$a$' parity checks and rows satisfy `$b$' parity checks (i.e., a tensor code is the tensor product of a column code and row code). Tensor codes are useful in distributed storage because a single erasure can be corrected quickly either by reading its row or column. Maximally Recoverable (MR) Tensor Codes, introduced by Gopalan et al., are tensor codes which can correct every erasure pattern that is information theoretically possible to correct. The main questions about MR Tensor Codes are characterizing which era…
Coded computation is a framework which provides redundancy in distributed computing systems to speed up largescale tasks. Although most existing works assume an error-free scenarios in a master-worker setup, the link failures are common in current wired/wireless networks. In this paper, we consider the straggler problem in coded distributed computing with link failures, by modeling the links between the master node and worker nodes as packet erasure channels. When the master fails to detect the received signal, retransmission is required for each worker which increases the overall run-time to …
Accessing the data in the failed disk (degraded read) with low latency is crucial for an erasure-coded storage system. In this work, the maximum distance separable (MDS) array code with the property of degraded-read friendly (DRF) is discussed. For the DRF MDS array code with 2 redundant nodes and the sub-packetization level of 2, the lower bound of its access bandwidth is derived.
An $[n, k, n-k+1]$ linear code is called an MDS code. An $[n, k, n-k]$ linear code is said to be almost maximum distance separable (almost MDS or AMDS for short). A code is said to be near maximum distance separable (near MDS or NMDS for short) if the code and its dual code both are almost maximum distance separable. The first near MDS code was the $[11, 6, 5]$ ternary Golay code discovered in 1949 by Golay. This ternary code holds $4$-designs, and its extended code holds a Steiner system $S(5, 6, 12)$ with the largest strength known. In the past 70 years, sporadic near MDS codes holding $t$-d…
In distributed storage, erasure codes -- like Reed-Solomon Codes -- are often employed to provide reliability. In this setting, it is desirable to be able to repair one or more failed nodes while minimizing the repair bandwidth. In this work, motivated by Reed-Solomon codes, we study the problem of repairing multiple failed nodes in a scalar MDS code. We extend the framework of (Guruswami and Wootters, 2017) to give a framework for constructing repair schemes for multiple failures in general scalar MDS codes, in the centralized repair model. We then specialize our framework to Reed-Solomon cod…
In ``Infinite families of near MDS codes holding $t$-designs, IEEE Trans. Inform. Theory, 2020, 66(9), pp. 5419-5428'', Ding and Tang made a breakthrough in constructing the first two infinite families of NMDS codes holding $2$-designs or $3$-designs. Up to now, there are only a few known infinite families of NMDS codes holding $t$-designs in the literature. The objective of this paper is to construct new infinite families of NMDS codes holding $t$-designs. We determine the weight enumerators of the NMDS codes and prove that the NMDS codes hold $2$-designs or $3$-designs. Compared with known $…
Recently, the construction of new MDS Euclidean self-dual codes has been widely investigated. In this paper, for square q, we utilize generalized Reed-Solomon (GRS) codes and their extended codes to provide four generic families of q-ary MDS Euclidean self-dual codes. In particular, for large square q, our constructions take up a proportion of generally more than 34% in all the possible lengths of q-ary MDS Euclidean self-dual codes, which is larger than the previous results. Moreover, two new families of MDS Euclidean self-orthogonal codes and two new families of MDS Euclidean almost self-dua…
Entanglement-assisted quantum error correcting codes (EAQECCs) can be derived from arbitrary classical linear codes. However, it is a very difficult task to determine the number of entangled states required. In this work, using the method of the decomposition of the defining set of constacyclic codes, we construct two families of q-ary entanglement-assisted quantum MDS (EAQMDS) codes based on classical constacyclic MDS codes by exploiting less pre-shared maximally entangled states. We show that a class of q-ary EAQMDS have minimum distance upper bound greater than q. Some of them have much lar…
Streaming codes are a class of packet-level erasure codes that are designed with the goal of ensuring recovery in low-latency fashion, of erased packets over a communication network. It is well-known in the streaming code literature, that diagonally embedding codewords of a $[τ+1,τ+1-a]$ Maximum Distance Separable (MDS) code within the packet stream, leads to rate-optimal streaming codes capable of recovering from $a$ arbitrary packet erasures, under a strict decoding delay constraint $τ$. Thus MDS codes are geared towards the efficient handling of the worst-case scenario corresponding to the …
With entanglement-assisted (EA) formalism, arbitrary classical linear codes are allowed to transform into EAQECCs by using pre-shared entanglement between the sender and the receiver. In this paper, based on classical cyclic MDS codes by exploiting pre-shared maximally entangled states, we construct two families of $q$-ary entanglement-assisted quantum MDS codes $[[\frac{q^{2}+1}{a},\frac{q^{2}+1}{a}-2(d-1)+c,d;c]]$, where q is a prime power in the form of $am+l$, and $a=(l^2+1)$ or $a=\frac{(l^2+1)}{5}$. We show that all of $q$-ary EAQMDS have minimum distance upper limit much larger than the…
In the recent paper entitled "Explicit constructions of MDS self-dual codes" accepted in { IEEE Transactions on Information Theory}, doi: 10.1109/TIT.2019.2954877, the author has constructed families of MDS self-dual codes from genus zero algebraic geometry (AG) codes, where the AG codes of length $n$ were defined using two divisors $G$ and $D=P_1+\cdots+P_n.$ In the present correspondence, we explore more families of optimal self-dual codes from AG codes. New families of MDS self-dual codes with odd characteristics and those of almost MDS self-dual codes are constructed explicitly from genus …
A linear code with parameters of the form $[n, k, n-k+1]$ is referred to as an MDS (maximum distance separable) code. A linear code with parameters of the form $[n, k, n-k]$ is said to be almost MDS (i.e., almost maximum distance separable) or AMDS for short. A code is said to be near maximum distance separable (in short, near MDS or NMDS) if both the code and its dual are almost maximum distance separable. Near MDS codes correspond to interesting objects in finite geometry and have nice applications in combinatorics and cryptography. In this paper, seven infinite families of $[2^m+1, 3, 2^m-2…
Streaming codes represent a packet-level FEC scheme for achieving reliable, low-latency communication. In the literature on streaming codes, the commonly-assumed Gilbert-Elliott channel model, is replaced by a more tractable, delay-constrained, sliding-window (DCSW) channel model that can introduce either random or burst erasures. The known streaming codes that are rate optimal over the DCSW channel model are constructed by diagonally embedding a scalar block code across successive packets. These code constructions have field size that is quadratic in the delay parameter $τ$ and have a somewha…
The hull of linear codes have promising utilization in coding theory and quantum coding theory. In this paper, we study the hull of generalized Reed-Solomon codes and extended generalized Reed-Solomon codes over finite fields with respect to the Euclidean inner product. Several infinite families of MDS codes with arbitrary dimensional hull are presented. As an application, using these MDS codes with arbitrary dimensional hull, we construct several new infinite families of entanglement-assisted quantum error-correcting codes with flexible parameters.
Linear codes with complementary duals (LCD) have a great deal of significance amongst linear codes. Maximum distance separable (MDS) codes are also an important class of linear codes since they achieve the greatest error correcting and detecting capabilities for fixed length and dimension. The construction of linear codes that are both LCD and MDS is a hard task in coding theory. In this paper, we study the constructions of LCD codes that are MDS from negacyclic codes over finite fields of odd prime power $q$ elements. We construct four families of MDS negacyclic LCD codes of length $n|\frac{q…
The parameters of a $q$-ary MDS Euclidean self-dual codes are completely determined by its length and the construction of MDS Euclidean self-dual codes with new length has been widely investigated in recent years. In this paper, we give a further study on the construction of MDS Euclidean self-dual codes via generalized Reed-Solomon (GRS) codes and their extended codes. The main idea of our construction is to choose suitable evaluation points such that the corresponding (extended) GRS codes are Euclidean self-dual. Firstly, we consider the evaluation set consists of two disjoint subsets, one o…
Distributed matrix computations over large clusters can suffer from the problem of slow or failed worker nodes (called stragglers) which can dominate the overall job execution time. Coded computation utilizes concepts from erasure coding to mitigate the effect of stragglers by running 'coded' copies of tasks comprising a job; stragglers are typically treated as erasures. While this is useful, there are issues with applying, e.g., MDS codes in a straightforward manner. Several practical matrix computation scenarios involve sparse matrices. MDS codes typically require dense linear combinations o…
MDS codes and self-dual codes are important families of classical codes in coding theory. It is of interest to investigate MDS self-dual codes. The existence of MDS self-dual codes over finite field $F_q$ is completely solved for $q$ is even. In this paper, for finite field with odd characteristic, we construct some new classes of MDS self-dual codes by (extended) generalized Reed-Solomon codes.
Recently, subfield codes of geometric codes over large finite fields $\gf(q)$ with dimension $3$ and $4$ were studied and distance-optimal subfield codes over $\gf(p)$ were obtained, where $q=p^m$. The key idea for obtaining very good subfield codes over small fields is to choose very good linear codes over an extension field with small dimension. This paper first presents a general construction of $[q+1, 2, q]$ MDS codes over $\gf(q)$, and then studies the subfield codes over $\gf(p)$ of some of the $[q+1, 2,q]$ MDS codes over $\gf(q)$. Two families of dimension-optimal codes over $\gf(p)$ ar…
