The hull of linear codes have promising utilization in coding theory and quantum coding theory. In this paper, we study the hull of generalized Reed-Solomon codes and extended generalized Reed-Solomon codes over finite fields with respect to the Euclidean inner product. Several infinite families of MDS codes with arbitrary dimensional hull are presented. As an application, using these MDS codes with arbitrary dimensional hull, we construct several new infinite families of entanglement-assisted quantum error-correcting codes with flexible parameters.
The Galois hulls of linear codes are a generalization of the Euclidean and Hermitian hulls of linear codes. In this paper, we study the Galois hulls of (extended) GRS codes and present several new constructions of MDS codes with Galois hulls of arbitrary dimensions via (extended) GRS codes. Two general methods of constructing MDS codes with Galois hulls of arbitrary dimensions by Hermitian or general Galois self-orthogonal (extended) GRS codes are given. Using these methods, some MDS codes with larger dimensions and Galois hulls of arbitrary dimensions can be obtained and relatively strict con…
In this paper, we propose a mechanism on the constructions of MDS codes with arbitrary dimensions of Euclidean hulls. Precisely, we construct (extended) generalized Reed-Solomon(GRS) codes with assigned dimensions of Euclidean hulls from self-orthogonal GRS codes. It turns out that our constructions are more general than previous works on Euclidean hulls of (extended) GRS codes.
The hull of a linear code is the intersection of itself with its dual code with respect to certain inner product. Both Euclidean and Hermitian hulls are of theorical and practical significance. In this paper, we construct several new classes of MDS codes via (extended) generalized Reed-Solomon (GRS) codes and determine their Euclidean or Hermitian hulls. Specifically, four new classes of MDS codes with Hermitian hulls of flexible dimensions and six new classes of MDS codes with Euclidean hulls of flexible dimensions are constructed. For the former, we further construct four new classes of enta…
In this paper, we construct several classes of maximum distance separable (MDS) codes via generalized Reed-Solomon (GRS) codes and extended GRS codes, where we can determine the dimensions of their Euclidean hulls or Hermitian hulls. It turns out that the dimensions of Euclidean hulls or Hermitian hulls of the codes in our constructions can take all or almost all possible values. As a consequence, we can apply our results to entanglement-assisted quantum error-correcting codes (EAQECCs) and obtain several new families of MDS EAQECCs with flexible parameters. The required number of maximally en…
We define the Euclidean hull of a linear code $C$ as the intersection of $C$ and its Euclidean dual $C^\perp$. The hull with low dimensions gets much interest due to its crucial role in determining the complexity of algorithms for computing the automorphism group of a linear code and checking permutation equivalence of two linear codes. It has been recently proved that any $q$-ary $[n,k]$ linear code with $q>3$ gives rise to a linear code with the same parameters and having zero dimensional Euclidean hull, which is known as a linear complementary dual code. This paper aims to explore explicit …
The hull of linear codes plays an important role in quantum information and coding theory. In the present paper, by investigating the Galois hulls of generalized Reed-Solomon (GRS) codes and extended GRS codes over the finite field Fq, we give several new families of MDS codes with Galois hulls of arbitrary dimensions that are not obtained before. Some of them generalize the ones in the literature [13]. As a consequence, using these MDS codes with Galois hulls of arbitrary dimensions, we construct nine new families of MDS entanglement-assisted quantum error-correcting codes (EAQECCs) with flex…
The hull of a linear code is defined to be the intersection of the code and its dual. When the size of the hull is small, it has been proved that some algorithms for checking permutation equivalence of two linear codes and computing the automorphism group of a linear code are very effective in general. Maximum distance separable (MDS) codes are codes meeting the Singleton bound. Twisted Reed-Solomon codes is a generalization of Reed-Solomon codes, which is also a nice construction for MDS codes. In this short letter, we obtain some twisted Reed-Solomon MDS codes with one-dimensional hull. More…
We prove that any Hermitian self-orthogonal $[n,k,d]_{q^2}$ code gives rise to an $[n,k,d]_{q^2}$ code with $\ell$ dimensional Hermitian hull for $0\le \ell \le k$. We present a new method to construct Hermitian self-orthogonal $[n,k]_{q^2}$ codes with large dimensions $k>\frac{n+q-1}{q+1}$. New families of Hermitian self-orthogonal codes with good parameters are obtained; more precisely those containing almost MDS codes. By applying a puncturing technique to Hermitian self-orthogonal codes, MDS $[n,k]_{q^2}$ linear codes with Hermitian hull having large dimensions $k>\frac{n+q-1}{q+1}$ are al…

Let $\mathrm{SLAut}(\mathbb{F}_{q}^{n})$ denote the group of all semilinear isometries on $\mathbb{F}_{q}^{n}$, where $q=p^{e}$ is a prime power. In this paper, we investigate general properties of linear codes associated with $σ$ duals for $σ\in\mathrm{SLAut}(\mathbb{F}_{q}^{n})$. We show that the dimension of the intersection of two linear codes can be determined by generator matrices of such codes and their $σ$ duals. We also show that the dimension of $σ$ hull of a linear code can be determined by a generator matrix of it or its $σ$ dual. We give a characterization on $σ$ dual and $σ$ hull…
The Galois hull of a linear code is the intersection of itself and its Galois dual code, which has aroused the interest of researchers in these years. In this paper, we study Galois hulls of linear codes. Firstly, the symmetry of the dimensions of Galois hulls of linear codes is found. Some new necessary and sufficient conditions for linear codes being Galois self-orthogonal codes, Galois self-dual codes, and Galois linear complementary dual codes are characterized. Then, we propose explicit methods to construct Galois self-orthogonal codes of larger length from given Galois self-orthogonal co…
The intersection ${\bf C}\bigcap {\bf C}^{\perp}$ (${\bf C}\bigcap {\bf C}^{\perp_h}$) of a linear code ${\bf C}$ and its Euclidean dual ${\bf C}^{\perp}$ (Hermitian dual ${\bf C}^{\perp_h}$) is called the Euclidean (Hermitian) hull of this code. It is natural to consider the hull-variation problem when a linear code ${\bf C}$ is transformed to an equivalent code ${\bf v} \cdot {\bf C}$. In this paper we introduce the maximal hull dimension as an invariant of a linear code with respect to the equivalent transformations. Then some basic properties of the maximal hull dimension are studied. We p…
The intersection ${\bf C}\bigcap {\bf C}^{\perp_H}$ of a linear code ${\bf C} \subset {\bf F}_{q^2}$ and its Hermitian dual ${\bf C}^{\perp_H}$ is called the Hermitian hull of this code. A linear code ${\bf C} \subset {\bf F}_{q^2}$ satisfying ${\bf C} \subset {\bf C}^{\perp_H}$ is called Hermitian self-orthogonal. Many Hermitian self-orthogonal codes were given for the construction of MDS quantum error correction codes (QECCs). In this paper we prove that for a nonnegative integer $h$ satisfying $0 \leq h \leq k$, a linear Hermitian self-orthogonal $[n, k]_{q^2}$ code is equivalent to a linea…
In this paper, we study Euclidean and Hermitian hulls of generalized Reed-Solomon codes and twisted generalized Reed-Solomon codes, as well as the Hermitian hulls of Roth-Lempel typed codes. We present explicit constructions of MDS and AMDS linear codes for which their hull dimensions are well determined. As an application, we provide several classes of entanglement-assisted quantum error correcting codes with new parameters.
Galois hulls of linear codes have important applications in quantum coding theory. In this paper, we construct some new classes of (extended) generalized Reed-Solomon (GRS) codes with Galois hulls of arbitrary dimensions. We also propose a general method on constructing GRS codes with Galois hulls of arbitrary dimensions from special Euclidean orthogonal GRS codes. Finally, we construct several new families of entanglement-assisted quantum error-correcting codes (EAQECCs) and MDS EAQECCs by utilizing the above results.
Let $q=p^h$ be a prime power and $e$ be an integer with $0\leq e\leq h-1$. $e$-Galois self-orthogonal codes are generalizations of Euclidean self-orthogonal codes ($e=0$) and Hermitian self-orthogonal codes ($e=\frac{h}{2}$ and $h$ is even). In this paper, we propose two general methods to construct $e$-Galois self-orthogonal (extended) generalized Reed-Solomon (GRS) codes. As a consequence, eight new classes of $e$-Galois self-orthogonal (extended) GRS codes with odd $q$ and $2e\mid h$ are obtained. Based on the Galois dual of a code, we also study its punctured and shortened codes. As applic…
Quantum error correction is fundamentally important for quantum information processing and computation. Quantum error correction codes have been studied and constructed since the pioneering papers of Shor and Steane. Optimal (called MDS) $q$-qubit quantum codes attaining the quantum Singleton bound were constructed for very restricted lengths $n \leq q^2+1$. Entanglement-assisted quantum error correction (EAQEC) code was proposed to use the pre-shared maximally entangled state for the enhancing of error correction capability. Recently there have been a lot of constructions of MDS EAQEC codes a…
The high repair cost of (n,k) Maximum Distance Separable (MDS) erasure codes has recently motivated a new class of codes, called Regenerating Codes, that optimally trade off storage cost for repair bandwidth. In this paper, we address bandwidth-optimal (n,k,d) Exact-Repair MDS codes, which allow for any failed node to be repaired exactly with access to arbitrary d survivor nodes, where k<=d<=n-1. We show the existence of Exact-Repair MDS codes that achieve minimum repair bandwidth (matching the cutset lower bound) for arbitrary admissible (n,k,d), i.e., k<n and k<=d<=n-1. Our approach is based…
A closed form formula of the partition weight enumerator of maximum distance separable (MDS) codes is derived for an arbitrary number of partitions. Using this result, some properties of MDS codes are discussed. The results are extended for the average binary image of MDS codes in finite fields of characteristic two. As an application, we study the multiuser error probability of Reed Solomon codes.
The entanglement-assisted stabilizer formalism can transform arbitrary classical linear codes into entanglement-assisted quantum error correcting codes (EAQECCs). In this work, we construct some new entanglement-assisted quantum MDS (EAQMDS) codes with length $n=\frac{q^2+1}5$ from cyclic codes. Compared with all the previously known parameters with the same length, all of them have flexible parameters and larger minimum distance.
Quantum convolutional codes can be used to protect a sequence of qubits of arbitrary length against decoherence. In this paper, we give two new constructions of quantum MDS convolutional codes derived from generalized Reed-Solomon codes and obtain eighteen new classes of quantum MDS convolutional codes. Most of them are new in the sense that the parameters of the codes are different from all the previously known ones.
An erasure channel with a fixed alphabet size $q$, where $q \gg 1$, is studied. It is proved that over any erasure channel (with or without memory), Maximum Distance Separable (MDS) codes achieve the minimum probability of error (assuming maximum likelihood decoding). Assuming a memoryless erasure channel, the error exponent of MDS codes are compared with that of random codes and linear random codes. It is shown that the envelopes of all these exponents are identical for rates above the critical rate. Noting the optimality of MDS codes, it is concluded that both random codes and linear random …
We propose a private information retrieval (PIR) protocol for distributed storage systems with noncolluding nodes where data is stored using an arbitrary linear code. An expression for the PIR rate, i.e., the ratio of the amount of retrieved data per unit of downloaded data, is derived, and a necessary and a sufficient condition for codes to achieve the maximum distance separable (MDS) PIR capacity are given. The necessary condition is based on the generalized Hamming weights of the storage code, while the sufficient condition is based on code automorphisms. We show that cyclic codes and Reed-…
Private information retrieval (PIR) gets renewed attentions due to its information-theoretic reformulation and its application in distributed storage system (DSS). The general PIR model considers a coded database containing $N$ servers storing $M$ files. Each file is stored independently via the same arbitrary $(N,K)$-MDS code. A user wants to retrieve a specific file from the database privately against an arbitrary set of $T$ colluding servers. A key problem is to analyze the PIR capacity, defined as the maximal number of bits privately retrieved per one downloaded bit. Several extensions for…
It is well known that an (n,k) code can be used to store 'k' units of information in 'n' unit-capacity disks of a distributed data storage system. If the code used is maximum distance separable (MDS), then the system can tolerate any (n-k) disk failures, since the original information can be recovered from any k surviving disks. The focus of this paper is the design of a systematic MDS code with the additional property that a single disk failure can be repaired with minimum repair bandwidth, i.e., with the minimum possible amount of data to be downloaded for recovery of the failed disk. Previo…
Symbol-pair codes are block codes with symbol-pair metrics designed to protect against pair-errors that may occur in high-density data storage systems. MDS symbol-pair codes are optimal in the sense that it can attain the highest pair-error correctability within the same code length and code size. Constructing MDS symbol-pair codes is one of the main topics in symbol-pair codes. In this paper, we characterize the symbol-pair distances of some constacyclic codes of arbitrary lengths over finite fields and a class of finite chain rings. Using the characterization of symbol-pair distance, we pres…
Entanglement-assisted quantum error correcting codes (EAQECCs) can be derived from arbitrary classical linear codes. However, it is a very difficult task to determine the number of entangled states required. In this work, using the method of the decomposition of the defining set of constacyclic codes, we construct two families of q-ary entanglement-assisted quantum MDS (EAQMDS) codes based on classical constacyclic MDS codes by exploiting less pre-shared maximally entangled states. We show that a class of q-ary EAQMDS have minimum distance upper bound greater than q. Some of them have much lar…
The entanglement-assisted (EA) formalism allows arbitrary classical linear codes to transform into entanglement-assisted quantum error correcting codes (EAQECCs) by using pre-shared entanglement between the sender and the receiver. In this work, we propose a decomposition of the defining set of constacyclic codes. Using this method, we construct four classes of $q$-ary entanglement-assisted quantum MDS (EAQMDS) codes based on classical constacyclic MDS codes by exploiting less pre-shared maximally entangled states. We show that a class of $q$-ary EAQMDS have minimum distance upper limit greate…
For high-rate maximum distance separable (MDS) codes, most of them are designed to optimally repair a single failed node by connecting all the surviving nodes. However, in practical systems, sometimes not all the surviving nodes are available. To facilitate the practical storage system, a few constructions of $(n,k)$ MDS codes with the property that any single failed node can be optimally repaired by accessing any $d$ surviving nodes have been proposed, where $d\in [k+1:n-1)$. However, all of them either have large sub-packetization levels or are not explicit for all the parameters. To address…
With entanglement-assisted (EA) formalism, arbitrary classical linear codes are allowed to transform into EAQECCs by using pre-shared entanglement between the sender and the receiver. In this paper, based on classical cyclic MDS codes by exploiting pre-shared maximally entangled states, we construct two families of $q$-ary entanglement-assisted quantum MDS codes $[[\frac{q^{2}+1}{a},\frac{q^{2}+1}{a}-2(d-1)+c,d;c]]$, where q is a prime power in the form of $am+l$, and $a=(l^2+1)$ or $a=\frac{(l^2+1)}{5}$. We show that all of $q$-ary EAQMDS have minimum distance upper limit much larger than the…
The hull $H(C)$ of a linear code $C$ is defined by $H(C)=C \cap C^\perp$. A linear code with a complementary dual (LCD) is a linear code with $H(C)=\{0\}$. The dimension of the hull of a code is an invariant under permutation equivalence. For binary and ternary codes the dimension of the hull is also invariant under monomial equivalence and we show that this invariant is determined by the extended weight enumerator of the code.\\ The hull of a code is not invariant under monomial equivalence if $q\geq 4$. We show that every ${\mathbb F}_q $-linear code is monomial equivalent with an LCD code i…
This paper presents a new construction of error correcting codes which achieves optimal recovery of a streaming source over a packet erasure channel. The channel model considered is the sliding window erasure model, with burst and arbitrary losses, introduced by Badr et al. . Recently, two independents works by Fong et al. and Krishnan and Kumar have identified optimal streaming codes within this framework. In this paper, we introduce streaming code when the rate of the code is at least 1/2. Our proposed construction is explicit and systematic, uses off-the-shelf maximum distance separable (MD…
An explicit construction of systematic MDS codes, called HashTag+ codes, with arbitrary sub-packetization level for all-node repair is proposed. It is shown that even for small sub-packetization levels, HashTag+ codes achieve the optimal MSR point for repair of any parity node, while the repair bandwidth for a single systematic node depends on the sub-packetization level. Compared to other codes in the literature, HashTag+ codes provide from 20% to 40% savings in the average amount of data accessed and transferred during repair.
The entanglement-assisted stabilizer formalism provides a useful framework for constructing quantum error-correcting codes (QECC), which can transform arbitrary classical linear codes into entanglement-assisted quantum error correcting codes (EAQECCs) by using pre-shared entanglement between the sender and the receiver. In this paper, we construct five classes of entanglement-assisted quantum MDS (EAQMDS) codes based on classical MDS codes by exploiting one or more pre-shared maximally entangled states. We show that these EAQMDS codes have much larger minimum distance than the standard quantum…

This paper presents a construction for high-rate MDS codes that enable bandwidth-efficient repair of a single node. Such MDS codes are also referred to as the minimum storage regenerating (MSR) codes in the distributed storage literature. The construction presented in this paper generates MSR codes for all possible number of helper nodes $d$ as $d$ is a design parameter in the construction. Furthermore, the obtained MSR codes have polynomial sub-packetization (a.k.a. node size) $α$. The construction is built on the recent code proposed by Sasidharan et al. [1], which works only for $d = n-1$, …
Binary maximum distance separable (MDS) array codes are a special class of erasure codes for distributed storage that not only provide fault tolerance with minimum storage redundancy but also achieve low computational complexity. They are constructed by encoding $k$ information columns into $r$ parity columns, in which each element in a column is a bit, such that any $k$ out of the $k+r$ columns suffice to recover all information bits. In addition to providing fault tolerance, it is critical to improve repair performance in practical applications. Specifically, if a single column fails, our go…
In this paper we characterize the algebraic structure of two-dimensional $(α,β)$-constacyclic codes of arbitrary length $s.\ell$ and of their duals. For $α,β\in \{1,-1\}$, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for a two-dimensional $(α,β)$-constacyclic code to be self-dual. We also show that a two-dimensional $(α,1 )$-constacyclic code $\mathcal{C}$ of length $n=s.\ell$ can not be self-dual if $\gcd(s,q)= 1$. Finally, we give some examples of self-dual, isodual, MDS and quasi-twisted codes corresponding to two-dimensional $(α,β)$-constacyclic codes.
The hulls of linear and cyclic codes over finite fields have been of interest and extensively studied due to their wide applications. In this paper, the hulls of cyclic codes of length $n$ over the ring $\mathbb{Z}_4$ have been focused on. Their characterization has been established in terms of the generators viewed as ideals in the quotient ring $\mathbb{Z}_4[x]/\langle x^n-1\rangle$. An algorithm for computing the types of the hulls of cyclic codes of arbitrary odd length over $\mathbb{Z}_4$ has been given. The average $2$-dimension $E(n)$ of the hulls of cyclic codes of odd length $n$ over …
We propose three private information retrieval (PIR) protocols for distributed storage systems (DSSs) where data is stored using an arbitrary linear code. The first two protocols, named Protocol 1 and Protocol 2, achieve privacy for the scenario with noncolluding nodes. Protocol 1 requires a file size that is exponential in the number of files in the system, while Protocol 2 requires a file size that is independent of the number of files and is hence simpler. We prove that, for certain linear codes, Protocol 1 achieves the maximum distance separable (MDS) PIR capacity, i.e., the maximum PIR ra…
