We consider the following generalization of an $(n,k)$ MDS code for application to an erasure channel with additive noise. Like an MDS code, our code is required to be decodable from any $k$ received symbols, in the absence of noise. In addition, we require that the noise margin for every allowable erasure pattern be as large as possible and that the code satisfy a power constraint. In this paper we derive performance bounds and present a few designs for low rank lattice codes for an additive noise channel with erasures.
Codes in the sum-rank metric have various applications in error control for multishot network coding, distributed storage and code-based cryptography. Linearized Reed-Solomon (LRS) codes contain Reed-Solomon and Gabidulin codes as subclasses and fulfill the Singleton-like bound in the sum-rank metric with equality. We propose the first known error-erasure decoder for LRS codes to unleash their full potential for multishot network coding. The presented syndrome-based Berlekamp-Massey-like error-erasure decoder can correct $t_F$ full errors, $t_R$ row erasures and $t_C$ column erasures up to $2t…
This paper considers the recovery of a low-rank matrix from an observed version that simultaneously contains both (a) erasures: most entries are not observed, and (b) errors: values at a constant fraction of (unknown) locations are arbitrarily corrupted. We provide a new unified performance guarantee on when the natural convex relaxation of minimizing rank plus support succeeds in exact recovery. Our result allows for the simultaneous presence of random and deterministic components in both the error and erasure patterns. On the one hand, corollaries obtained by specializing this one single res…
Expectation Propagation is a generalization to Belief Propagation (BP) in two ways. First, it can be used with any exponential family distribution over the cliques in the graph. Second, it can impose additional constraints on the marginal distributions. We use this second property to impose pair-wise marginal distribution constraints in some check nodes of the LDPC Tanner graph. These additional constraints allow decoding the received codeword when the BP decoder gets stuck. In this paper, we first present the new decoding algorithm, whose complexity is identical to the BP decoder, and we then…
We study the capacity region of two-user erasure interference channels with local delayed channel state information at the transmitters. In our model, transmitters have local mismatched outdated knowledge of the channel gains. We propose a transmission strategy that only relies on the delayed knowledge of the {\it outgoing} links at each transmitter and achieves the outer-bound for the scenario in which transmitters learn the entire channel state with delay. Our result reveals the subset of the channel state information that affects the capacity region the most. We also identify cases in which…
A Rank-Metric Approach to Error Control in Random Network Coding
We define the deconstruction cost of a tripartite quantum state on systems $ABE$ as the minimum rate of noise needed to apply to the $AE$ systems, such that there is negligible disturbance to the marginal state on the $BE$ systems, while the system $A$ of the resulting state is locally recoverable from the $E$ system alone. We refer to such actions as deconstruction operations and protocols implementing them as state deconstruction protocols. State deconstruction generalizes Landauer erasure of a single-party quantum state as well the erasure of correlations of a two-party quantum state. We fi…
In this paper we present a new algorithm, denoted as TEP, to decode low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes over the Binary Erasure Channel (BEC). The TEP decoder is derived applying the expectation propagation (EP) algorithm with a tree- structured approximation. Expectation Propagation (EP) is a generalization to Belief Propagation (BP) in two ways. First, it can be used with any exponential family distribution over the cliques in the graph. Second, it can impose additional constraints on the marginal distributions. We use this second property to impose pair-wise marginal constraints in some c…
We address the problem of decoding Gabidulin codes beyond their unique error-correction radius. The complexity of this problem is of importance to assess the security of some rank-metric code-based cryptosystems. We propose an approach that introduces row or column erasures to decrease the rank of the error in order to use any proper polynomial-time Gabidulin code error-erasure decoding algorithm. This approach improves on generic rank-metric decoders by an exponential factor.
This paper presents a new construction of error correcting codes which achieves optimal recovery of a streaming source over a packet erasure channel. The channel model considered is the sliding window erasure model, with burst and arbitrary losses, introduced by Badr et al. . Recently, two independents works by Fong et al. and Krishnan and Kumar have identified optimal streaming codes within this framework. In this paper, we introduce streaming code when the rate of the code is at least 1/2. Our proposed construction is explicit and systematic, uses off-the-shelf maximum distance separable (MD…
This paper studies the parameters for which Reed-Muller (RM) codes over $GF(2)$ can correct random erasures and random errors with high probability, and in particular when can they achieve capacity for these two classical channels. Necessarily, the paper also studies properties of evaluations of multi-variate $GF(2)$ polynomials on random sets of inputs. For erasures, we prove that RM codes achieve capacity both for very high rate and very low rate regimes. For errors, we prove that RM codes achieve capacity for very low rate regimes, and for very high rates, we show that they can uniquely dec…
Subspace codes and rank-metric codes can be used to correct errors and erasures in network, with linear network coding. Subspace codes were introduced by Koetter and Kschischang to correct errors and erasures in networks where topology is unknown (the noncoherent case). In a previous work, we have developed a family of subspace codes, based upon the Koetter-Kschichang construction, which are efficiently list decodable. Using these codes, we achieved a better decoding radius than Koetter-Kschischiang codes at low rates. Herein, we introduce a new family of subspace codes based upon a different …
This paper studies the low-rank matrix completion problem from an information theoretic perspective. The completion problem is rephrased as a communication problem of an (uncoded) low-rank matrix source over an erasure channel. The paper then uses achievability and converse arguments to present order-wise optimal bounds for the completion problem.
Given a topology of local parity-check constraints, a maximally recoverable code (MRC) can correct all erasure patterns that are information-theoretically correctable. In a grid-like topology, there are $a$ local constraints in every column forming a column code, $b$ local constraints in every row forming a row code, and $h$ global constraints in an $(m \times n)$ grid of codeword. Recently, Gopalan et al. initiated the study of MRCs under grid-like topology, and derived a necessary and sufficient condition, termed as the regularity condition, for an erasure pattern to be recoverable when $a=1…
In this paper we propose a new approach to code-based signatures that makes use in particular of rank metric codes. When the classical approach consists in finding the unique preimage of a syndrome through a decoding algorithm, we propose to introduce the notion of mixed decoding of erasures and errors for building signature schemes. In that case the difficult problem becomes, as is the case in lattice-based cryptography, finding a preimage of weight above the Gilbert-Varshamov bound (case where many solutions occur) rather than finding a unique preimage of weight below the Gilbert-Varshamov b…
We extend the notion of locality from the Hamming metric to the rank and subspace metrics. Our main contribution is to construct a class of array codes with locality constraints in the rank metric. Our motivation for constructing such codes stems from designing codes for efficient data recovery from correlated and/or mixed (i.e., complete and partial) failures in distributed storage systems. Specifically, the proposed local rank-metric codes can recover locally from 'crisscross errors and erasures', which affect a limited number of rows and/or columns of the storage system. We also derive a Si…
The column Hamming distance of a convolutional code determines the error correction capability when streaming over a class of packet erasure channels. We introduce a metric known as the column sum rank, that parallels column Hamming distance when streaming over a network with link failures. We prove rank analogues of several known column Hamming distance properties and introduce a new family of convolutional codes that maximize the column sum rank up to the code memory. Our construction involves finding a class of super-regular matrices that preserve this property after multiplication with non…
Locally repairable convolutional codes (LRCCs) for distributed storage systems (DSSs) are introduced in this work. They enable local repair, for a single node erasure (or more generally, $ \partial - 1 $ erasures per local group), and sliding-window global repair, which can correct erasure patterns with up to $ {\rm d}^c_j - 1 $ erasures in every window of $ j+1 $ consecutive blocks of $ n $ nodes, where $ {\rm d}^c_j $ is the $ j $th column distance of the code. The parameter $ j $ can be adjusted, for a fixed LRCC, according to different catastrophic erasure patterns, requiring only to conta…
The multiplicative-additive finite-field matrix channel arises as an adequate model for linear network coding systems when links are subject to errors and erasures, and both the network topology and the network code are unknown. In a previous work we proposed a general construction of multishot codes for this channel based on the multilevel coding theory. Herein we apply this construction to the rank-metric space, obtaining multishot rank-metric codes which, by lifting, can be converted to codes for the aforementioned channel. We also adapt well-known encoding and decoding algorithms to the co…
Random network coding recently attracts attention as a technique to disseminate information in a network. This paper considers a non-coherent multi-shot network, where the unknown and time-variant network is used several times. In order to create dependencies between the different shots, particular convolutional codes in rank metric are used. These codes are so-called (partial) unit memory ((P)UM) codes, i.e., convolutional codes with memory one. First, distance measures for convolutional codes in rank metric are shown and two constructions of (P)UM codes in rank metric based on the generator …
We study the problem of reducing the communication overhead from a noisy wire-tap channel or storage system where data is encoded as a matrix, when more columns (or their linear combinations) are available. We present its applications to reducing communication overheads in universal secure linear network coding and secure distributed storage with crisscross errors and erasures and in the presence of a wire-tapper. Our main contribution is a method to transform coding schemes based on linear rank-metric codes, with certain properties, to schemes with lower communication overheads. By applying t…
This paper deals with the multiplicative finite-field matrix channel, a discrete memoryless channel whose input and output are matrices (over a finite field) related by a multiplicative transfer matrix. The model considered here assumes that all transfer matrices with the same rank are equiprobable, so that the channel is completely characterized by the rank distribution of the transfer matrix. This model is seen to be more flexible than previously proposed ones in describing random linear network coding systems subject to link erasures, while still being sufficiently simple to allow tractabil…
Locally repairable codes (LRCs) are considered with equal or unequal localities, local distances and local field sizes. An explicit two-layer architecture with a sum-rank outer code is obtained, having disjoint local groups and achieving maximal recoverability (MR) for all families of local linear codes (MDS or not) simultaneously, up to a specified maximum locality $ r $. Furthermore, the local linear codes (thus the localities, local distances and local fields) can be efficiently and dynamically modified without global recoding or changes in architecture or outer code, while preserving the M…
