For each set of (freely chosen) seed data, the conformal method reduces the Einstein constraint equations to a system of elliptic equations, the conformal constraint equations. We prove an admissibility criterion, based on a (conformal) prescribed scalar curvature problem, which provides a necessary condition on the seed data for the conformal constraint equations to (possibly) admit a solution. We then consider sets of asymptotically Euclidean (AE) seed data for which solutions of the conformal constraint equations exist, and examine the blowup properties of these solutions as the seed data sets approach sets for which no solutions exist. We also prove that there are AE seed data sets which include a Yamabe nonpositive metric and lead to solutions of the conformal constraints. These data sets allow the mean curvature function to have zeroes.
In this note we prove two existence theorems for the Einstein constraint equations on asymptotically Euclidean manifolds. The first is for arbitrary mean curvature functions with restrictions on the size of the transverse-traceless data and the non-gravitational field data, while the second assumes a near-CMC condition, with no other restrictions.
We consider the Einstein constraints on asymptotically euclidean manifolds $M$ of dimension $n \geq 3$ with sources of both scaled and unscaled types. We extend to asymptotically euclidean manifolds the constructive method of proof of existence. We also treat discontinuous scaled sources. In the last section we obtain new results in the case of non-constant mean curvature.
We study Jang's equation on a one-parameter family of asymptotically flat, spherically symmetric Cauchy hypersurfaces in the maximally extended Schwarzschild spacetime. The hypersurfaces contain apparent horizons and are parametrized by their proximity to the singularity at $r = 0$. We show that on those hypersurfaces sufficiently close to the singularity, every radial solution to Jang's equation blows up. The proof depends only on the geometry in an arbitrarily small neighborhood of the singularity, suggesting that Jang's equation is in fact detecting the singularity. We comment on possible a…
We prove that the boundary of the trapped region in an asymptotically Euclidean Riemannian manifold of dimension at least 3 is a stable smooth minimal hypersurface except for a singular set of codimension at least 8.
In this article we further develop the solution theory for the Einstein constraint equations on an n-dimensional, asymptotically Euclidean manifold M with interior boundary S. Building on recent results for both the asymptotically Euclidean and compact with boundary settings, we show existence of far-from-CMC and near-CMC solutions to the conformal formulation of the Einstein constraints when nonlinear Robin boundary conditions are imposed on S, similar to those analyzed previously by Dain (2004), by Maxwell (2004, 2005), and by Holst and Tsogtgerel (2013) as a model of black holes in various …
We use the conformal method to obtain solutions of the Einstein-scalar field gravitational constraint equations. Handling scalar fields is a bit more challenging than handling matter fields such as fluids, Maxwell fields or Yang-Mills fields, because the scalar field introduces three extra terms into the Lichnerowicz equation, rather than just one. Our proofs are constructive and allow for arbitrary dimension (>2) as well as low regularity initial data.
In this dissertation, we prove a number of results regarding the conformal method of finding solutions to the Einstein constraint equations. These results include necessary and sufficient conditions for the Lichnerowicz equation to have solutions, global supersolutions which guarantee solutions to the conformal constraint equations for near-constant-mean-curvature (near-CMC) data as well as for far-from-CMC data, a proof of the limit equation criterion in the near-CMC case, as well as a model problem on the relationship between the asymptotic constants of solutions and the ADM mass. We also pr…
In 1996, Huisken-Yau proved that every three-dimensional Riemannian manifold can be uniquely foliated near infinity by stable closed surfaces of constant mean curvature (CMC) if it is asymptotically equal to the (spatial) Schwarzschild solution. Using their method, Rigger proved the same theorem for Riemannian manifolds being asymptotically equal to the (spatial) (Schwarzschild-)Anti-de Sitter solution. This was generalized to asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds by Neves-Tian, Chodosh, and the author at a later stage. In this work, we prove the reverse implication as the author already did in …
We produce new examples, both explicit and analytical, of bi-axisymmetric stationary vacuum black holes in 5 dimensions. A novel feature of these solutions is that they are asymptotically locally Euclidean in which spatial cross-sections at infinity have lens space $L(p,q)$ topology, or asymptotically Kaluza-Klein so that spatial cross-sections at infinity are topologically $S^1\times S^2$. These are nondegenerate black holes of cohomogeneity 2, with any number of horizon components, where the horizon cross-section topology is any one of the three admissible types: $S^3$, $S^1\times S^2$, or $…
A generally covariant $U(1)^3$ gauge theory describing the $G_N \to 0$ limit of Euclidean general relativity is an interesting test laboratory for general relativity, specially because the algebra of the Hamiltonian and diffeomorphism constraints of this limit is isomorphic to the algebra of the corresponding constraints in general relativity. In the present work, we study boundary conditions and asymptotic symmetries of the $U(1)^3$ model and show that while asymptotic spacetime translations admit well-defined generators, boosts and rotations do not. Comparing with Euclidean general relativit…
In our model of quantum gravity the quantum development of a Cauchy hypersurface is governed by a wave equation derived as the result of a canonical quantization process. To find physically interesting solutions of the wave equation we employ the separation of variables by considering a temporal eigenvalue problem which has a complete countable set of eigenfunctions with positive eigenvalues and also a spatial eigenvalue problem which has a complete set of eigendistributions. Assuming that the Cauchy hypersurface is asymtotically Euclidean we prove that the temporal eigenvalues are also spatia…
We have previously proposed that asymptotically AdS 3D wormholes and black holes can be analytically continued to the Euclidean signature. The analytic continuation procedure was described for non-rotating spacetimes, for which a plane t=0 of time symmetry exists. The resulting Euclidean manifolds turned out to be handlebodies whose boundary is the Schottky double of the geometry of the t=0 plane. In the present paper we generalize this analytic continuation map to the case of rotating wormholes. The Euclidean manifolds we obtain are quotients of the hyperbolic space by a certain quasi-Fuchsia…
We construct low regularity solutions of the vacuum Einstein constraint equations. In particular, on 3-manifolds we obtain solutions with metrics in $H^s\loc$ with $s>{3\over 2}$. The theory of maximal asymptotically Euclidean solutions of the constraint equations descends completely the low regularity setting. Moreover, every rough, maximal, asymptotically Euclidean solution can be approximated in an appropriate topology by smooth solutions. These results have application in an existence theorem for rough solutions of the Einstein evolution equations.
The rigidity of the Positive Mass Theorem states that the only complete asymptotically flat manifold of nonnegative scalar curvature and zero mass is Euclidean space. We study the stability of this statement for spaces that can be realized as graphical hypersurfaces in Euclidean space. We prove (under certain technical hypotheses) that if a sequence of complete asymptotically flat graphs of nonnegative scalar curvature has mass approaching zero, then the sequence must converge to Euclidean space in the pointed intrinsic flat sense. The appendix includes a new Gromov-Hausdorff and intrinsic fla…
For spaces which are not asymptotically anti-de Sitter where the asymptotic behavior is deformed by replacing the cosmological constant by a dilaton scalar potential, we show that it is possible to have well-defined boundary stress-energy tensors and finite Euclidean actions by adding appropriate surface counterterms. We illustrate the method by the examples of domain-wall black holes in gauged supergravities, three-dimensional dilaton black holes and topological dilaton black holes in four dimensions. We calculate the boundary stress-energy tensor and Euclidean action of these black configura…
Generalising a proof by Bartnik in the asymptotically Euclidean case, we give an elementary proof of positivity of the hyperbolic mass near the hyperbolic space. It is a pleasure to dedicate this work to Robert Bartnik on the occasion of his 60th birthday.
Given a collection of N asymptotically Euclidean ends with zero scalar curvature, we construct a Riemannian manifold with zero scalar curvature and one asymptotically Euclidean end, whose boundary has a neighborhood isometric to the disjoint union of a specified collection of sub-regions of the given ends. An application is the construction of time-symmetric solutions of the constraint equations which model N-body initial data.
We define the (total) center of mass for suitably asymptotically hyperbolic time-slices of asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes in general relativity. We do so in analogy to the picture that has been consolidated for the (total) center of mass of suitably asymptotically Euclidean time-slices of asymptotically Minkowskian spacetimes (isolated systems). In particular, we unite -- an altered version of -- the approach based on Hamiltonian charges with an approach based on CMC-foliations near infinity. The newly defined center of mass transforms appropriately under changes of the asymptotic co…
We prove the existence of a large class of initial data for the vacuum Einstein equations which possess a finite number of asymptotically Euclidean and asymptotically conformally cylindrical or periodic ends. Aside from being asymptotically constant, only mild conditions on the mean curvature of these initial data sets are imposed.
We construct asymptotically Euclidean solutions of the vacuum Einstein constraint equations with an apparent horizon boundary condition. Specifically, we give sufficient conditions for the constant mean curvature conformal method to generate such solutions. The method of proof is based on the barrier method used by Isenberg for compact manifolds without boundary, suitably extended to accommodate semilinear boundary conditions and low regularity metrics. As a consequence of our results for manifolds with boundary, we also obtain improvements to the theory of the constraint equations on asymptot…
Given a collection of N solutions of the (3+1) vacuum Einstein constraint equations which are asymptotically Euclidean, we show how to construct a new solution of the constraints which is itself asymptotically Euclidean, and which contains specified sub-regions of each of the N given solutions. This generalizes earlier work which handled the time-symmetric case, thus providing a construction of large classes of initial data for the many body problem in general relativity.
We study the linearization stability of the Einstein constraint equations on an asymptotically hyperbolic manifold. In particular we prove that these equations are linearization stable in the neighborhood of vacuum solutions for a non-positive cosmological constant and of Friedman--Lemaître--Robertson--Walker spaces in a certain range of decays. We also prove that this result is no longer true for faster decays. The construction of the counterexamples is based on a new construction of TT-tensors on the Euclidean space and on positive energy theorems.
When working with asymptotically hyperbolic initial data sets for general relativity it is convenient to assume certain simplifying properties. We prove that the subset of initial data sets with such properties is dense in the set of physically reasonable asymptotically hyperbolic initial data sets. More specifically, we show that an asymptotically hyperbolic initial data set with non-negative local energy density can be approximated by an initial data set with strictly positive local energy density and a simple structure at infinity, while changing the mass arbitrarily little. This is achieve…
The rigidity of the positive mass theorem states that the only complete asymptotically flat manifold of nonnegative scalar curvature and zero mass is Euclidean space. We prove a corresponding stability theorem for spaces that can be realized as graphical hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$. Specifically, for an asymptotically flat graphical hypersurface $M^n\subset \mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ of nonnegative scalar curvature (satisfying certain technical conditions), there is a horizontal hyperplane $Π\subset \mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ such that the flat distance between $M$ and $Π$ in any ball of radius $ρ$ can …
In 2015, Mantoulidis and Schoen constructed $3$-dimensional asymptotically Euclidean manifolds with non-negative scalar curvature whose ADM mass can be made arbitrarily close to the optimal value of the Riemannian Penrose Inequality, while the intrinsic geometry of the outermost minimal surface can be ``far away'' from being round. The resulting manifolds, called extensions, are geometrically not ``close'' to a spatial Schwarzschild manifold. This suggests instability of the Riemannian Penrose Inequality. Their construction was later adapted to $n+1$ dimensions by Cabrera Pacheco and Miao. In …
We study the problem of the cosmological constant in the context of the multiverse in Lorentzian spacetime, and show that the cosmological constant will vanish in the future. This sort of argument was started from Coleman in 1989, and he argued that the Euclidean wormholes make the multiverse partition a superposition of various values of the cosmological constant $Λ$, which has a sharp peak at $Λ=0$. However, the implication of the Euclidean analysis to our Lorentzian spacetime is unclear. With this motivation, we analyze the quantum state of the multiverse in Lorentzian spacetime by the WKB …
Wormholes are considered both from the Wheeler deWitt equation, as well as from the field equations in the Euclidean background of Roberson Walker mini-superspace in $R^2$ gravity. Quantum wormhole satisfies Hawking Page wormhole boundary condition in the Euclidean background of mini-superspace, however, in the Lorentzian background wave functional turns to the usual oscillatory function. The Euclidean field equations for $κ=0, \pm1$ lead to the wormhole configuration; as well as oscillating universe in Euclidean time $τ$. The oscillating universe is equivalent to expanding universe under anal…
This paper defines, on the Galilean space-time, the group of asymptotically Euclidean transformations (AET), which are equivalent to Euclidean transformations at space-time infinity, and proposes a formulation of nonrelativistic quantum mechanics which is invariant under such transformations. This formulation is based on the asymptotic quantum measure, which is shown to be invariant under AET's. This invariance exposes an important connection between AET's and Feynman path integrals, and reveals the nonmetric character of the asymptotic quantum measure. The latter feature becomes even clearer …
We use Euclidean path integrals to explore the set of bulk asymptotically AdS spacetimes with good CFT duals. We consider simple bottom-up models of bulk physics defined by Einstein-Hilbert gravity coupled to thin domain walls and restrict to solutions with spherical symmetry. The cosmological constant is allowed to change across the domain wall, modeling more complicated Einstein-scalar systems where the scalar potential has multiple minima. In particular, the cosmological constant can become positive in the interior. However, in the above context, we show that inflating bubbles are never pro…
We propose a Euclidean preparation of an asymptotically AdS$_2$ spacetime that contains an inflating dS$_2$ bubble. The setup can be embedded in a four dimensional theory with a Minkowski vacuum and a false vacuum. AdS$_2$ times 2-sphere approximate the near horizon geometry of a $4d$ near-extremal RN wormhole. Likewise, in the false vacuum the near-horizon geometry of a near-extremal black hole is approximately dS$_2$ times 2-sphere. We interpret the Euclidean solution as describing the decay of an excitation inside the wormhole to a false vacuum bubble. The result is an inflating region insi…
We study Ricci flows on $R^n$, $n\ge 3$, that evolve from asymptotically flat initial data. Under mild conditions on the initial data, we show that the flow exists and remains asymptotically flat for an interval of time. The mass is constant in time along the flow. We then specialize to the case of rotationally symmetric, asymptotically flat initial data containing no embedded minimal hyperspheres. We show that in this case the flow is immortal, remains asymptotically flat, never develops a minimal hypersphere, and converges to flat Euclidean space as the time diverges to infinity. We discuss …
