We prove that the boundary of the trapped region in an asymptotically Euclidean Riemannian manifold of dimension at least 3 is a stable smooth minimal hypersurface except for a singular set of codimension at least 8.
We show that the Morse index of a closed minimal hypersurface in a four-dimensional Riemannian manifold cannot be bound in terms of the volume and the topological invariants of the hypersurface itself by presenting a method for constructing Riemannian metrics on S^4 that admit embedded minimal hyperspheres of uniformly bounded volume and arbitrarily large Morse index. The phenomena we exhibit are in striking contrast with the three-dimensional compactness results by Choi-Schoen.
For 3 $\leq$ n $\leq$ 7, we prove that a bumpy closed Riemannian n-manifold contains a sequence of connected embedded closed minimal surfaces with unbounded area.
The scattering data of a Riemannian manifold with boundary record the incoming and outgoing directions of each geodesic passing through. We show that the scattering data of a generic Riemannian surface with no trapped geodesics and no conjugate points determine the lengths of geodesics. Counterexamples exists when trapped geodesics are allowed.
If $π:M\rightarrow B$ is a Riemannian Submersion and $M$ has positive sectional curvature, O'Neill's Horizontal Curvature Equation shows that $B$ must also have positive curvature. We show there are Riemannian submersions from compact manifolds with positive Ricci curvature to manifolds that have small neighborhoods of (arbitrarily) negative Ricci curvature, but that there are no Riemannian submersions from manifolds with positive Ricci curvature to manifolds with nonpositive Ricci curvature.
We give explicit representation formulas for marginally trapped submanifolds of co-dimension two in pseudo-Riemannian spaces with arbitrary signature and constant sectional curvature. This paper is dedicated to the memory of Franki Dillen, 1963-2013.
In this paper we construct, for n >= 2, arbitrarily large families of infinite towers of compact, orientable Riemannian n-manifolds which are isospectral but not isometric at each stage. In dimensions two and three, the towers produced consist of hyperbolic 2-manifolds and hyperbolic 3-manifolds, and in these cases we show that the isospectral towers do not arise from Sunada's method.
We glue two manifolds which have curvature operators at least k (in the sense of eigenvalues) along their common boundary. We show that if the sum of the second fundamental forms of the boundary is positive semidefinite, then the curvature operator of the resulting manifold is at least k up to an arbitrarily small error term. Similar results hold for Ricci, scalar, bi, isotropic and flag curvature, respectively.
On a complete Riemannian manifold M with Ricci curvature satisfying $$\textrm{Ric}(\nabla r,\nabla r) \geq -Ar^2(\log r)^2(\log(\log r))^2...(\log^{k}r)^2$$ for $r\gg 1$, where A>0 is a constant, and r is the distance from an arbitrarily fixed point in M. we prove some Liouville-type theorems for a C^2 function $f:M\rightarrow \Bbb R$ satisfying $Δf\geq F(f)$ for a function $F:\Bbb R\rightarrow \Bbb R$.
We prove that the flat product metric on $D^n\times S^1$ is scattering rigid where $D^n$ is the unit ball in $\R^n$ and $n\geq 2$. The scattering data (loosely speaking) of a Riemannian manifold with boundary is map $S:U^+\partial M\to U^-\partial M$ from unit vectors $V$ at the boundary that point inward to unit vectors at the boundary that point outwards. The map (where defined) takes $V$ to $γ'_V(T_0)$ where $γ_V$ is the unit speed geodesic determined by $V$ and $T_0$ is the first positive value of $t$ (when it exists) such that $γ_V(t)$ again lies in the boundary. We show that any other Ri…
We give necessary and sufficient conditions for a semi-Riemannian manifold of arbitrary signature to be locally isometrically immersed into certain warped products. Then, we describe a way to use the structure equations of such immersions to construct foliations of marginally trapped surfaces in a four-dimensional Lorentzian spacetimes. We point out that, sometimes, Gauss and Codazzi equations are not sufficient to ensure the existence of a local isometric immersion of a semi-Riemannian manifold as a hypersurface of another manifold. We finally give two low-dimensional examples to illustrate o…
In this paper we prove that every proper Lie groupoid admits a desingularization to a regular proper Lie groupoid. When equipped with a Riemannian metric, we show that it admits a desingularization to a regular Riemannian proper Lie groupoid, arbitrarily close to the original one in the Gromov-Hausdorff distance between the quotient spaces. We construct the desingularization via a successive blow-up construction on a proper Lie groupoid. We also prove that our construction of the desingularization is invariant under Morita equivalence of groupoids, showing that it is a desingularization of the…
Let $(M,g)$ be any closed Riemannianan manifold and $(N,h)$ be a Riemannian manifold of constant positive scalar curvature. We prove that the Yamabe equation on the Riemannian product $(M\times N , g + δh)$ has at least $Cat(M) +1 $ solutions for $δ$ small enough, where $Cat(M)$ denotes the Lusternik-Schnirelmann-category of $M$. Cat(M) of the solutions obtained have energy arbitrarily close to the minimum.
The ratio of convexity radius over injectivity radius may be made arbitrarily small within the class of compact Riemannian manifolds of any fixed dimension at least two. This is proved using Gulliver's method of constructing manifolds with focal points but no conjugate points. The approach is suggested by a characterization of the convexity radius that resembles a classical result of Klingenberg about the injectivity radius.
We show that the 2-jet bundle of local Riemannian metrics on an arbitrary differentiable manifold admits a section which pointwise fulfills the curvature relation sec(g)=a for any real number a. It follows by Gromov's h-principle for open, invariant differential relations that every noncompact differentiable manifold carries arbitrarily pinched (incomplete) Riemannian metrics.
We consider the basic heat operator on functions on a Riemannian foliation of a compact, Riemannian manifold, and we show that the trace of this operator has a particular short time asymptotic expansion. The coefficients in this expansion are obtainable from local transverse geometric invariants - functions computable by analyzing the manifold in an arbitrarily small neighborhood of a leaf closure. Using this expansion, we prove some results about the spectrum of the basic Laplacian, such as the analogue of Weyl's asymptotic formula. Also, we explicitly calculate the first two nontrivial coeff…
It is known (E.L. Green (1997), O. Post (2003)) that for an arbitrary $m\in\mathbb{N}$ one can construct a periodic non-compact Riemannian manifold $M$ with at least $m$ gaps in the spectrum of the corresponding Laplace-Beltrami operator $-Δ_M$. In this work we want not only to produce a new type of periodic manifolds with spectral gaps but also to control the edges of these gaps. The main result of the paper is as follows: for arbitrary pairwise disjoint intervals $(\a_j,\b_j)\subset[0,\infty)$, $j=1,...,m$ ($m\in\mathbb{N}$), for an arbitrarily small $δ>0$ and for an arbitrarily large $L>0$ …
A Riemannian manifold is said to have infinite $\mathcal{KO}$-width if it admits an isometric immersion of an arbitrarily wide Riemannian band whose inward boundary has non-trivial higher index. In this paper we prove that if a closed spin manifold has inifinite $\mathcal{KO}$-width, then its Rosenberg index does not vanish. This gives a positive answer to a conjecture by R. Zeidler. We also prove its `multi-dimensional' generalization; if a closed spin manifold admit an isometric immersion of an arbitrarily wide cube-like domain whose lowest dimensional corner has non-trivial higher index, th…
In this study we show that, from arbitrarily dispersed initial data, both the concentration of electromagnetic fields and the focusing of gravitational waves could lead to the formation of trapped surfaces. We establish a scale-critical semi-global existence result from the past null infinity for the Einstein-Maxwell system by assigning the signature for decay rates to geometric quantities and Maxwell components. This result generalizes an approach of the first author on studying Einstein vacuum equations by employing additional elliptic estimates and geometric renormalizations, and it also ex…
We outline the current state of knowledge regarding geometric inequalities of systolic type, and prove new results, including systolic freedom in dimension 4. Namely, every compact, orientable, smooth 4-manifold X admits metrics of arbitrarily small volume such that every orientable, immersed surface of smaller than unit area is necessarily null-homologous in X.
In this article, we investigate when the set of primitive geodesic lengths on a Riemannian manifold have arbitrarily long arithmetic progressions. We prove that in the space of negatively curved metrics, a metric having such arithmetic progressions is quite rare. We introduce almost arithmetic progressions, a coarsification of arithmetic progressions, and prove that every negatively curved, closed Riemannian manifold has arbitrarily long almost arithmetic progressions in its primitive length spectrum. Concerning genuine arithmetic progressions, we prove that every non-compact, locally symmetri…
We show that compact Riemannian manifolds, regarded as metric spaces with their global geodesic distance, cannot contain a number of rigid structures such as (a) arbitrarily large regular simplices or (b) arbitrarily long sequences of points equidistant from pairs of points preceding them in the sequence. All of this provides evidence that Riemannian metric spaces admit what we term loose embeddings into finite-dimensional Euclidean spaces: continuous maps that preserve both equality as well as inequality. We also prove a local-to-global principle for Riemannian-metric-space loose embeddabilit…
In 2015, Mantoulidis and Schoen constructed $3$-dimensional asymptotically Euclidean manifolds with non-negative scalar curvature whose ADM mass can be made arbitrarily close to the optimal value of the Riemannian Penrose Inequality, while the intrinsic geometry of the outermost minimal surface can be ``far away'' from being round. The resulting manifolds, called extensions, are geometrically not ``close'' to a spatial Schwarzschild manifold. This suggests instability of the Riemannian Penrose Inequality. Their construction was later adapted to $n+1$ dimensions by Cabrera Pacheco and Miao. In …
Let (M,g) be a compact Riemannian spin manifold. The Atiyah-Singer index theorem yields a lower bound for the dimension of the kernel of the Dirac operator. We prove that this bound can be attained by changing the Riemannian metric g on an arbitrarily small open set.
In this paper we investigate the properties of small surfaces of Willmore type in Riemannian manifolds. By \emph{small} surfaces we mean topological spheres contained in a geodesic ball of small enough radius. In particular, we show that if there exist such surfaces with positive mean curvature in the geodesic ball $B_r(p)$ for arbitrarily small radius $r$ around a point $p$ in the Riemannian manifold, then the scalar curvature must have a critical point at $p$. As a byproduct of our estimates we obtain a strengthened version of the non-existence result of Mondino \cite{Mondino:2008} that impl…
We introduce a natural generalization of marginally outer trapped surfaces, called immersed marginally outer trapped surfaces, and prove that three dimensional asymptotically flat initial data sets either contain such surfaces or are diffeomorphic to R^3. We establish a generalization of the Penrose singularity theorem which shows that the presence of an immersed marginally outer trapped surface generically implies the null geodesic incompleteness of any spacetime that satisfies the null energy condition and which admits a non-compact Cauchy surface. Taken together, these results can be viewed…
We establish new obstruction results to the existence of Riemannian metrics on tori satisfying mixed bounds on both their sectional and Ricci curvatures. More precisely, from Lohkamp's theorem, every torus of dimension at least three admits Riemannian metrics with negative Ricci curvature. We show that the sectional curvature of these metrics cannot be bounded from above by an arbitrarily small positive constant. In particular, if the Ricci curvature of a Riemannian torus is negative, bounded away from zero, then there exist some planar directions in this torus where the sectional curvature is…
Let M be a compact Riemannian manifold with boundary. Let b>0 be the number of connected components of its boundary. For manifolds of dimension at least 3, we prove that it is possible to obtain an arbitrarily large (b+1)-th Steklov eigenvalue using a smooth conformal perturbation which is supported in a thin neighbourhood of the boundary, identically equal to 1 on the boundary. For j<b+1, it is also possible to obtain arbitrarily large j-th eigenvalue, but this require the conformal factor to spread throughout the interior of the manifold M. This is in stark contrast with the situation for th…
We show that for every closed Riemannian manifold there exists a continuous family of $1$-cycles (defined as finite collections of disjoint closed curves) parametrized by a sphere and sweeping out the whole manifold so that the lengths of all connected closed curves are bounded in terms of the volume (or the diameter) and the dimension $n$ of the manifold, when $n \geq 3$. An alternative form of this result involves a modification of Gromov's definition of waist of sweepouts, where the space of parameters can be any finite polyhedron (and not necessarily a pseudomanifold). We demonstrate that …
We show that any closed n-dimensional Riemannian manifold can be embedded by a map constructed from heat kernels at a certain time from a finite number of points. Both this time and this number can be bounded in terms of the dimension, a lower bound on the Ricci curvature, the injectivity radius and the volume. It follows that the manifold can be embedded by a finite number of eigenfunctions of the Laplace operator. Again, this number only depends on the geometric bounds and the dimension. In addition, both maps can be made arbitrarily close to an isometry. In the appendix, we derive quantitat…
Shape spaces are fundamental in a variety of applications including image registration, morphing, matching, interpolation, and shape optimization. In this work, we consider two-dimensional shapes represented by triangular meshes of a given connectivity. We show that the collection of admissible configurations representable by such meshes form a smooth manifold. For this manifold of planar triangular meshes we propose a geodesically complete Riemannian metric. It is a distinguishing feature of this metric that it preserves the mesh connectivity and prevents the mesh from degrading along geodesi…
In this paper we construct Ricci-positive metrics on the connected sum of products of arbitrarily many spheres provided the dimensions of all but one sphere in each summand are at least 3. There are two new technical theorems required to extend previous results on sums of products of two spheres. The first theorem is a gluing construction for Ricci-positive manifolds with corners generalizing a gluing construction of Perelman for Ricci-positive manifolds with boundaries. Our construction gives a sufficient condition for gluing together two Ricci-positive manifolds with corners along isometric …
We study a functional on the boundary of a compact Riemannian 3-manifold of nonnegative scalar curvature. The functional arises as the second variation of the Wang-Yau quasi-local energy in general relativity. We prove that the functional is positive definite on large coordinate spheres, and more general on nearly round surfaces including large constant mean curvature spheres in asymptotically flat 3-manifolds with positive mass; it is also positive definite on small geodesics spheres, whose centers do not have vanishing curvature, in Riemannian 3-manifolds of nonnegative scalar curvature. We …
In this paper, we introduce the notion of a quasi-biharmonic submanifold in a pseudo-Riemannian manifold and classify quasi-biharmonic marginally trapped Lagrangian surfaces in Lorentzian complex space forms.
For a Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ with strictly convex boundary $\partial M$, the lens data consists in the set of lengths of geodesics $γ$ with endpoints on $\partial M$, together with their endpoints $(x_-,x_+)\in \partial M\times \partial M$ and tangent exit vectors $(v_-,v_+)\in T_{x_-} M\times T_{x_+} M$. We show deformation lens rigidity for a large class of manifolds which includes all manifolds with negative curvature and strictly convex boundary, possibly with non-trivial topology and trapped geodesics. For the same class of manifolds in dimension $2$, we prove that the set of endpoin…
In this note we show that every compact spin manifold of dimension $\geq 3$ can be given a Riemannian metric for which a finite part of the spectrum of the Dirac operator consists of arbitrarily prescribed eigenvalues with multiplicity 1.
For a closed, connected direct product Riemannian manifold $(M, g)=(M_1\times\cdots\times M_l, g_1\oplus\cdots\oplus g_l)$, we define its multiconformal class $ [\![ g ]\!]$ as the totality $\{f_1^2g_1\oplus \cdots\oplus f_l^2g_l\}$ of all Riemannian metrics obtained from multiplying the metric $g_i$ of each factor $M_i$ by a function $f_i^2>0$ on the total space $M$. A multiconformal class $ [\![ g ]\!]$ contains not only all warped product type deformations of $g$ but also the whole conformal class $[\tilde{g}]$ of every $\tilde{g}\in [\![ g ]\!]$. In this article, we prove that $ [\![ g ]\!…
In this paper we construct compact manifolds with fixed boundary geometry which admit Riemannian metrics of unit volume with arbitrarily large Steklov spectral gap. We also study the effect of localized conformal deformations that fix the boundary geometry. For instance, we prove that it is possible to make the spectral gap arbitrarily large using conformal deformations which are localized on domains of small measure, as long as the support of the deformations contains and connects each component of the boundary.
Geodesic nets on Riemannian manifolds form a natural class of stationary objects generalizing geodesics. Yet almost nothing is known about their classification or general properties even when the ambient Riemannian manifold is the Euclidean plane or the round $2$-sphere. In the first half of this paper we survey some results and open questions (old and new) about geodesic nets on Riemannian manifolds. Many of these open questions are about geodesic nets on the Euclidean plane. The second half contains a partial answer for one of these questions, namely, a description of a new infinite family o…
We show that, on an oriented compact surface, two sufficiently $C^2$-close Riemannian metrics with strictly convex boundary, no conjugate points, hyperbolic trapped set for their geodesic flows, and same marked boundary distance, are isometric via a diffeomorphism that fixes the boundary. We also prove that the same conclusion holds on a compact surface for any two negatively curved Riemannian metrics with strictly convex boundary and same marked boundary distance, extending a result of Croke and Otal.
We prove that Riemannian metrics with a uniform weak norm can be smoothed to having arbitrarily high regularity. This generalizes all previous smoothing results. As a consequence we obtain a generalization of Gromov's almost flat manifold theorem. A uniform Betti number estimate is also obtained.
We show that for generic Riemannian metrics on a simply-connected closed spin manifold of dimension at least 5 the dimension of the space of harmonic spinors is no larger than it must be by the index theorem. The same result holds for periodic fundamental groups of odd order. The proof is based on a surgery theorem for the Dirac spectrum which says that if one performs surgery of codimension at least 3 on a closed Riemannian spin manifold, then the Dirac spectrum changes arbitrarily little provided the metric on the manifold after surgery is chosen properly.
We show that on every compact spin manifold admitting a Riemannian metric of positive scalar curvature Friedrich's eigenvalue estimate for the Dirac operator can be made sharp up to an arbitrarily small given error by choosing the metric suitably.
We construct a Riemannian metric $g$ on $\mathbb{R}^4$ (arbitrarily close to the euclidean one) and a smooth simple closed curve $Γ\subset \mathbb R^4$ such that the unique area minimizing surface spanned by $Γ$ has infinite topology. Furthermore the metric is almost Kähler and the area minimizing surface is calibrated.
We study the boundary and lens rigidity problems on domains without assuming the convexity of the boundary. We show that such rigidities hold when the domain is a simply connected compact Riemannian surface without conjugate points. For the more general class of non-trapping compact Riemannian surfaces with no conjugate points, we show lens rigidity. We also prove the injectivity of the X-ray transform on tensors in a variety of settings with non-convex boundary and, in some situations, allowing a non-empty trapped set.
We present several rigidity results for Riemannian manifolds $(M^n,g)$ with scalar curvature $S \ge -n(n-1)$ (or $S\ge 0$), and having compact boundary $N$ satisfying a related mean curvature inequality. The proofs make use of results on marginally outer trapped surfaces applied to appropriate initial data sets. One of the results involves an analysis of Obata's equation on manifolds with boundary. This result is relevant to recent work of Lan-Hsuan Huang and the second author concerning the rigidity of asymptotically locally hyperbolic manifolds with zero mass.
For a closed Riemannian orbifold $O$, we compare the spectra of the Laplacian, acting on functions or differential forms, to the Neumann spectra of the orbifold with boundary given by a domain $U$ in $O$ whose boundary is a smooth manifold. Generalizing results of several authors, we prove that the metric of $O$ can be perturbed to ensure that the first $N$ eigenvalues of $U$ and $O$ are arbitrarily close to one another. This involves a generalization of the Hodge decomposition to the case of orbifolds with manifold boundary. Using these results, we study the behavior of the Laplace spectrum o…
