We propose a Euclidean preparation of an asymptotically AdS$_2$ spacetime that contains an inflating dS$_2$ bubble. The setup can be embedded in a four dimensional theory with a Minkowski vacuum and a false vacuum. AdS$_2$ times 2-sphere approximate the near horizon geometry of a $4d$ near-extremal RN wormhole. Likewise, in the false vacuum the near-horizon geometry of a near-extremal black hole is approximately dS$_2$ times 2-sphere. We interpret the Euclidean solution as describing the decay of an excitation inside the wormhole to a false vacuum bubble. The result is an inflating region inside a non-traversable asymptotically Minkowski wormhole.
The braneworld model, in which our Universe is a three-brane embedded in a five-dimensional bulk, allows the existence of wormholes, without any violation of the energy conditions. A fundamental ingredient of traversable wormholes is the violation of the null energy condition (NEC). However, in the brane world models, the stress energy tensor confined on the brane, threading the wormhole, satisfies the NEC. In conventional general relativity, wormholes existing before inflation can be significantly enlarged by the expanding spacetime. We investigate the evolution of an inflating wormhole in th…
Brane-world models where observers are trapped within the thickness of a 3-brane offer novel perspectives on gravitation and cosmology. In this essay, I would argue that the problem of a late epoch acceleration of the universe is well explained in the framework of a 4-dimensional de Sitter universe embedded in a 5-dimensional de Sitter spacetime. While a 5D anti de Sitter space background is important for studying conformal field theories -- for its role in the AdS/CFT correspondence -- the existence of a 5-dimensional de Sitter space is crucial for finding an effective 4D Newton constant that…
In this work we present a class of geometries which describes wormholes in a Randall-Sundrum brane model, focusing on de Sitter backgrounds. Maximal extensions of the solutions are constructed and their causal structures are discussed. A perturbative analysis is developed, where matter and gravitational perturbations are studied. Analytical results for the quasinormal spectra are obtained and an extensive numerical survey is conducted. Our results indicate that the wormhole geometries presented are stable.
In this paper we consider the stability of some inflating brane-world models in quantum cosmology. It is shown that whereas the singular model based on the construction of inflating branes from Euclidean five-dimensional anti-de Sitter space is unstable to tensorial cosmological perturbations in the bulk, the nonsingular model which uses a five-dimensional asymptotically anti-de Sitter wormhole to construct the inflating branes is stable to these perturbations.
A thin-shell wormhole is crafted by the cut-and-paste method of two Bardeen de-Sitter black holes using Darmois-Israel formalism. Energy conditions are considered for different values of magnetic charge while both mass and cosmological constant are fixed. The attractive and repulsive characteristics of the throat of the thin-shell wormhole are also examined through the radial acceleration. Dynamics and stability of the wormhole are studied around the static solutions of the linearized radial perturbations at the throat of the wormhole. The regions of stability are determined by checking out th…

We present wormhole solutions to Horava non-relativistic gravity theory in vacuum. We show that, if the parameter $λ$ is set to one, transversable wormholes connecting two asymptotically de Sitter or anti-de Sitter regions exist. In the case of arbitrary $λ$, the asymptotic regions have a more complicated metric with constant curvature. We also show that, when the detailed balance condition is violated softly, tranversable and asymptotically Minkowski, de Sitter or anti-de Sitter wormholes exist.
We investigate Euclidean wormholes in Einstein gravity with a massless scalar field in de Sitter space. Euclidean wormholes are possible due to the analytic continuation of the time as well as complexification of fields, where we need to impose the classicality after the Wick-rotation to the Lorentzian signatures. For some parameters, wormholes are preferred than Hawking-Moss instantons, and hence wormholes can be more fundamental than Hawking-Moss type instantons. Euclidean wormholes can be interpreted in three ways: (1) classical big bounce, (2) either tunneling from a small to a large unive…
This paper is devoted to an investigation of Euclidean wormholes made by fuzzy instantons. We investigate the Euclidean path integral in anti-de Sitter space. In Einstein gravity, we introduce a scalar field with a potential. Because of the analyticity, there is a contribution of complex-valued instantons, so-called fuzzy instantons. If we have a massless scalar field, then we obtain Euclidean wormholes, where the probabilities become smaller and smaller as the size of the throat becomes larger and larger. If we introduce a non-trivial potential, then in order to obtain a non-zero tunneling ra…
We present a new wormhole solution connecting two points of the same universe separated by finite distance. Virtually all the existing solutions connect two disconnected universes, or two points of the same universe that are infinitely far away. We construct our solution by placing two black holes at the antipodes of the closed de Sitter space with a matter shell between them. The gravitational action of the matter shell and cosmological constant counteracts attractive gravity between the black holes and makes the whole configuration static. The whole space outside the wormhole mouths is causa…
We investigate scalar perturbations from inflation in braneworld cosmologies with extra dimensions. For this we calculate scalar metric fluctuations around five dimensional warped geometry with four dimensional de Sitter slices. The background metric is determined self-consistently by the (arbitrary) bulk scalar field potential, supplemented by the boundary conditions at both orbifold branes. Assuming that the inflating branes are stabilized (by the brane scalar field potentials), we estimate the lowest eigenvalue of the scalar fluctuations - the radion mass. In the limit of flat branes, we re…
The aim of this paper is to report on the existence of a wide variety of exact solutions, ranging from black holes to wormholes, when a conformally coupled scalar field with a self interacting potential containing a linear, a cubic and a quartic self interaction is taken as a source of the energy-momentum tensor, in the Einstein theory with a cosmological constant. Among all the solutions there are two particularly interesting. On the one hand, the spherically symmetric black holes when the cosmological constant is positive; they are shown to be everywhere regular, namely there is no singulari…
The Goheer-Kleban-Susskind no-go theorem says that the symmetry of de Sitter space is incompatible with finite entropy. The meaning and consequences of the theorem are discussed in the light of recent developments in holography and gravitational path integrals. The relation between the GKS theorem, Boltzmann fluctuations, wormholes, and exponentially suppressed non-perturbative phenomena suggests: the classical symmetry between different static patches is broken; and that eternal de Sitter space -- if it exists at all -- is an ensemble average.
We study Born-Infeld gravity coupled to an anisotropic fluid in a static, spherically symmetric background. The free function characterizing the fluid is selected on the following grounds: i) recovery of the Reissner-Nordström solution of GR at large distances, ii) fulfillment of classical energy conditions and iii) inclusion of models of nonlinear electrodynamics as particular examples. Four branches of solutions are obtained, depending on the signs of two parameters on the gravity and matter sectors. On each branch, we discuss in detail the modifications on the innermost region of the corres…
We study and construct spacetimes, dubbed planar AdS-dS-wormholes, satisfying the null energy condition and having two asymptotically AdS boundaries connected through a (non-traversable) inflating wormhole. As for other wormholes, it is natural to expect dual descriptions in terms of two disconnected CFTs in appropriate entangled states. But for our cases certain expected bulk entangling surfaces used by the Hubeny-Rangamani-Takayanagi (HRT) prescription to compute CFT entropy do not exist. In particular, no real codimension-2 extremal surface can run from one end of the wormhole to the other.…
We study a model for the initial state of the universe based on a gravitational path integral that includes connected geometries which simultaneously produce bra and ket of the wave function. We argue that a natural object to describe this state is the Wigner distribution, which is a function on a classical phase space obtained by a certain integral transform of the density matrix. We work with Lorentzian de Sitter Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity in which we find semiclassical saddle-points for pure gravity, as well as when we include matter components such as a CFT and a classical inflaton field. W…
We use the one loop vacuum polarization induced by scalar quantum electrodynamics to compute the electric and magnetic fields of point charges and magnetic dipoles on a locally de Sitter background. Our results are consistent with the physical picture of an inflating universe filling with a vast sea of charged particles as more and more virtual infrared scalar are ripped out of the vacuum. One consequence is that vacuum polarization quickly becomes nonperturbatively strong. Our computation employs the Schwinger-Keldysh effective field equations and is done in flat, conformal coordinates. Resul…
We construct solutions of plane symmetric wormholes in the presence of a negative cosmological constant by matching an interior spacetime to the exterior anti-de Sitter vacuum solution. The spatial topology of this plane symmetric wormhole can be planar, cylindrical and toroidal. As usual the null energy condition is necessarily violated at the throat. At the junction surface, the surface stresses are determined. By expressing the tangential surface pressure as a function of several parameters, namely, that of the matching radius, the radial derivative of the redshift function and of the surfa…
We use Euclidean path integrals to explore the set of bulk asymptotically AdS spacetimes with good CFT duals. We consider simple bottom-up models of bulk physics defined by Einstein-Hilbert gravity coupled to thin domain walls and restrict to solutions with spherical symmetry. The cosmological constant is allowed to change across the domain wall, modeling more complicated Einstein-scalar systems where the scalar potential has multiple minima. In particular, the cosmological constant can become positive in the interior. However, in the above context, we show that inflating bubbles are never pro…

We present a new family of exact four-dimensional Taub-NUT spacetimes in Einstein-$Λ$ theory supplemented with a conformally coupled scalar field exhibiting a power-counting super-renormalizable potential. The construction proceeds as follows: A solution of a conformally coupled theory with a conformal potential, henceforth the seed $(g_{μν},ϕ)$, is transformed by the action of a specific change of frame in addition with a simultaneous shift of the seed scalar. The new configuration, $(\bar{g}_{μν},\barϕ)$, solves the field equations of a conformally coupled theory with the aforementioned supe…
We study tensor perturbations in a model with inflating Randall--Sundrum-type brane embedded in five-dimensional anti-de Sitter (adS$_5$) bulk. In this model, a natural {\it in}-vacuum of gravitons is the vacuum defined in static adS$_5$ frame. We show that this vacuum is, in fact, the same as the {\it in}-vacuum defined in the frame with de Sitter (dS$_4$) slicing, in which the brane is at rest. Thus, during inflation, gravitons on and off the brane remain in their vacuum state. We then study graviton creation by the brane on which inflation terminates at some moment of time. We mostly consid…
We compute the radiative corrections to the mass of a test boson field in an inflating space-time. The calculations are carried out in case of a boson part of a supersymmetric chiral multiplet. We show that its mass is preserved up to logarithmic divergences both in ultraviolet and infrared domains. Consequences of these results for inflationary models are discussed.
In this work we have derived a class of geometries which describe black holes and wormholes in Randall-Sundrum-type brane models, focusing mainly on asymptotically anti-de Sitter backgrounds. We show that by continuously deforming the usual four dimensional vacuum background, a specific family of solutions is obtained. Maximal extensions of the solutions are presented, and their causal structures are discussed.
We study small fluctuations of the stringy wormhole solutions of graviton-dilaton-axion system in arbitrary dimensions. We show under O($d$)-symmetric harmonic perturbation that the Euclidean wormhole solutions are unstable in flat space irrespective of dimensions and in anti de Sitter space of $d=3$.
We use the Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin (WKB) approximation to study the formation and propagation of bound states in the vicinity of a wormhole in the non-minimal derivative coupling theory of gravity. The wormhole throat connects two Anti-de Sitter spacetimes. We show that when the scalar field lies in high orbital states, the corresponding potential has potential barriers that block the passage of a classical field. We investigate the behaviour of the bound states trapped in the potential wells and provide the flow between the two AdS regions.
We initiate a study of cosmology within the framework of Maldacena's AdS/CFT correspondence. We present a comprehensive analysis of the classical motion of a charged domain wall that separates an external Reissner-Nordstrom region of spacetime (with small or vanishing cosmological constant) from an internal de-Sitter region. The possible associated spacetime diagrams are drawn, although in the classical case, an unambiguous prediction of what occurs at late times in the interior region is not possible, since singularities and Cauchy horizons form. We argue that, when the asymptotic region is a…
We present Euclidean wormhole solutions describing possible bridges within the multiverse. The study is carried out in the framework of the third quantization. The matter content is modelled through a scalar field which supports the existence of a whole collection of universes. The instanton solutions describe Euclidean solutions that connect baby universes with asymptotically de Sitter universes. We compute the tunnelling probability of these processes. Considering the current bounds on the energy scale of inflation and assuming that all the baby universes are nucleated with the same probabil…
We describe here how the late time behavior of the decaying states, which is predicted to deviate from an exponential form, while normally of insignificant consequence, may have important cosmological implications in the case of false vacuum decay. It may increase the likelihood of eternal inflation, and may help explain the likelihood of observing a small vacuum energy at late times, as well as arguing against decay into a large negative energy (anti-de Sitter space), vacuum state as has been motivated by some string theory considerations. Several interesting open questions are raised, includ…
We present several classes of exact solutions in the Einstein-Klein-Gordon system with a cosmological constant. The spacetime has spherical, plane, or hyperbolic symmetry and the higher-dimensional solutions are obtained in a closed form only in the plane symmetric case. Among them, the class-I solution represents an asymptotically locally anti-de Sitter (AdS) dynamical black hole or wormhole. In four and higher dimensions, the generalized Misner-Sharp quasi-local mass blows up at AdS infinity, inferring that the spacetime is only locally AdS. In three dimensions, the scalar field becomes triv…

Using the AdS/CFT correspondence, we construct the holographic dual of a tunneling instanton describing Schwinger pair creation in de Sitter space. Our approach allows us to extract the critical value of the electric field for which the potential barrier disappears, rendering the vacuum unstable. In addition, we compute the large-$λ$, large-$N_c$ corrections to the nucleation rate and we find that it agrees with previous expectations based on perturbative computations. As a by-product of this investigation, we study the causal structure of the string dual to the nucleated pair as seen by diffe…
We extend the study of the effect of static primordial black holes on vacuum decay. In particular, we compare the tunneling rates between vacua of different values of the cosmological constant and black hole mass by pointing out the dominant processes based on a numerical examination of the thin wall instanton. Three distinct cases are considered, namely the nucleation of a true vacuum bubble into the false vacuum, the nucleation of a false vacuum bubble into the true vacuum as well as the Farhi-Guth-Guven mechanism. As a proof of concept, it is shown that in order to increase the transition r…
We explore the construction and stability of asymptotically anti-de Sitter Euclidean wormholes in a variety of models. In simple ad hoc low-energy models, it is not hard to construct two-boundary Euclidean wormholes that dominate over disconnected solutions and which are stable (lacking negative modes) in the usual sense of Euclidean quantum gravity. Indeed, the structure of such solutions turns out to strongly resemble that of the Hawking-Page phase transition for AdS-Schwarzschild black holes, in that for boundary sources above some threshold we find both a `large' and a `small' branch of wo…
We study the AdS/CFT correspondence as a probe of inflation. We assume the existence of a string landscape containing at least one stable AdS vacuum and a (nearby) metastable de Sitter state. Standard arguments imply that the bulk physics in the vicinity of the AdS minimum is described by a boundary CFT. We argue that large enough bubbles of the dS phase, including those able to inflate, are described by mixed states in the CFT. Inflating degrees of freedom are traced over and do not appear explicitly in the boundary description. They nevertheless leave a distinct imprint on the mixed state. I…
The AdS/CFT correspondence relates quantum entanglement between boundary Conformal Field Theories and geometric connections in the dual asymptotically Anti-de Sitter space-time. We consider entangled states in the n-fold tensor product of a 1+1 dimensional CFT Hilbert space defined by the Euclidean path integral over a Riemann surface with n holes. In one region of moduli space, the dual bulk state is a black hole with n asymptotically AdS_3 regions connected by a common wormhole, while in other regions the bulk fragments into disconnected components. We study the entanglement structure and co…
