Suppose $G$ is a reductive algebraic group, $T$ is a Cartan subgroup, $N=\text{Norm}(T)$, and $W=N/T$ is the Weyl group. If $w\in W$ has order $d$, it is natural to ask about the orders lifts of $w$ to $N$. It is straightforward to see that the minimal order of a lift of $w$ has order $d$ or $2d$, but it can be a subtle question which holds. We first consider the question of when $W$ itself lifts to a subgroup of $N$ (in which case every element of $W$ lifts to an element of $N$ of the same order). We then consider two natural classes of elements: regular and elliptic. In the latter case all lifts of $w$ are conjugate, and therefore have the same order. We also consider the twisted case.
Let N be the normalizer of a maximal torus T in a split reductive group over F_q and let w be an involution in the Weyl group N/T. We construct explicitly a lifting n of w in N such that the image of n under the Frobenius map is equal to the inverse of n.
Let N be the normalizer of a maximal torus T in a split reductive group over F_q, and let w be an involution in the Weyl group N/T. We construct a section of W satisfying the braid relations, such that the image of the lift n of w under the Frobenius map is equal to the inverse of n.
Let $G$ be a connected reductive group over a non-archimedean local field $F$ and $I$ be an Iwahori subgroup of $G(F)$. Let $I_n$ is the $n$-th Moy-Prasad filtration subgroup of $I$. The purpose of this paper is two-fold: to give some nice presentations of the Hecke algebra of connected, reductive groups with $I_n$-level structure; and to introduce the Tits group of the Iwahori-Weyl group of groups $G$ that split over an unramified extension of $F$. The first main result of this paper is a presentation of the Hecke algebra $\mathcal H(G(F),I_n)$, generalizing the previous work of Iwahori-Matsu…
Suppose $G$ is a connected complex semisimple group and $W$ is its Weyl group. The lifting of an element of $W$ to $G$ is semisimple. This induces a well-defined map from the set of elliptic conjugacy classes of $W$ to the set of semisimple conjugacy classes of $G$. In this paper, we give a uniform algorithm to compute this map. We also consider the twisted case.
We lift the parabolic quantum Bruhat graph into the Bruhat order on the affine Weyl group and into Littelmann's poset on level-zero weights. We establish a quantum analogue of Deodhar's Bruhat-minimum lift from a parabolic quotient of the Weyl group. This result asserts a remarkable compatibility of the quantum Bruhat graph on the Weyl group, with the cosets for every parabolic subgroup. Also, we generalize Postnikov's lemma from the quantum Bruhat graph to the parabolic one; this lemma compares paths between two vertices in the former graph. The results in this paper will be applied in a seco…
We study the minimal length elements in an integral conjugacy class of a classical extended affine Weyl group and we show that these elements are quite "special" in the sense of Geck and Pfeiffer \cite{GP93}. We also discuss some application on extended affine Hecke algebras and loop groups.
We define and study a correspondence between the set of distinguished G^0-conjugacy classes in a fixed connected component of a reductive group G (with G^0 almost simple) and the set of (twisted) elliptic conjugacy classes in the Weyl group. We also prove a homogeneity property related to this correspondence.
Let $W_a$ be an affine Weyl group and $η:W_a\longrightarrow W_0$ be the natural projection to the corresponding finite Weyl group. We say that $w\in W_a$ has finite Coxeter part if $η(w)$ is conjugate to a Coxeter element of $W_0$. The elements with finite Coxeter part is a union of conjugacy classes of $W_a$. We show that for each conjugacy class $\mathcal{O}$ of $W_a$ with finite Coxeter part there exits a unique maximal proper parabolic subgroup $W_J$ of $W_a$, such that the set of minimal length elements in $\mathcal{O}$ is exactly the set of Coxeter elements in $W_J$. Similar results hold…
Let G be a reductive group over an algebraically closed field whose characteristic is not a bad prime for G. Let w be an elliptic element of the Weyl group which has minimal length in its conjugacy class. We show that there exists a unique unipotent class X in G such that the following holds: if V is the variety of pairs consisting of an element g in X and a Borel subgroup B such that B,gBg^{-1} are in relative position w, then V is a homogeneous G-space.
In this paper we discuss lifting laws which, roughly, are ways of "lifting" elements of the open orbit of one prehomogeneous vector space to elements of the minimal nonzero orbit of another prehomogeneous vector space. We prove a handful of these lifting laws, and show how they can be used to help solve certain problems in arithmetic invariant theory. Of the results contained in this article are twisted versions of certain parametrization theorems of Bhargava.
Fundamental elements are certain special elements of affine Weyl groups introduced by Gortz, Haines, Kottwitz and Reuman. They play an important role in the study of affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties. In this paper, we obtain characterizations of the fundamental elements and their natural generalizations. We also derive an inverse to a version of "Newton-Hodge decomposition" in affine flag varieties. As an application, we obtain a group-theoretic generalization of Oort's results on minimal p-divisible groups, and we show that, in certain good reduction reduction of PEL Shimura datum, each Newt…
Let w be an elliptic element of the Weyl group of a connected reductive group G. Let X be the set of pairs (g,B) where g is an element of G, B is a Borel subgroup of G and B,gBg^{-1} are in relative position w. Then G acts naturally on X. Assume that w has minimal length in its conjugacy class. We show that the set of G-orbits in X has a well defined structure of an affine algebraic variety V. When G is a classical group we show that this variety is an affine space modulo the action of a finite diagonalizable group. In this case we also construct some nontrivial automorphisms of X.
In this paper we discuss some of Springer's work on unipotent elements in a reductive groups and on representations of Weyl groups. Among the topics considered are Springer's bijection from the unipotent variety to the nilpotent variety, Springer's example of nonrationality of certain representations of the Hecke algebras associated to a Weyl group and the Springer representation of the Weyl group associated to a unipotent element.
Let $G$ be a complex simply connected semisimple Lie group, and let $B_V$ be the canonical base of a Weyl module $V$ of $G$. We calculate explicitely the action of the longest element $w_0$ of the Weyl group on $B_V$ in terms of parametrizations. The method is based on results of Berenstein and Zelevinsky on the geometric lifting.
We study splitting densities of primitive elements of a discrete subgroup of a connected non-compact semisimple Lie group of real rank one with finite center in another larger such discrete subgroup. When the corresponding cover of such a locally symmetric negatively curved Riemannian manifold is regular, the densities can be easily obtained from the results due to Sarnak or Sunada. Our main interest is a case where the covering is not necessarily regular. Specifically, for the cases of the modular group and its congruence subgroups, we determine the splitting densities explicitly. As an appli…
We give an interpretation of the map $π^c$ defined by Reading, which is a map from the elements of a Coxeter group to the $c$-sortable elements, in terms of the representation theory of preprojective algebras. Moreover, we study a close relationship between $c$-sortable elements and torsion pairs, and give an explicit description of the cofinite torsion classes in the context of the Coxeter group. As a consequence, we give a proof of some conjectures proposed by Oppermann, Reiten, and the second author.
We show that various properties of unipotent elements in a reductive group over the complex numbers can be recovered purely in terms of the affine Weyl group of the dual group.
In this paper, we define a mixed-base number system over a Weyl group of type $D$, the group even-signed permutations. We introduce one-to-one correspondence between positive integers and elements of Weyl groups of type $D$ after constructed the subexceedant function associating to the group. Thus, the integer representations of all classical Weyl groups are now completed.
The purpose of this paper is to describe a general procedure for computing analogues of Young's seminormal representations of the symmetric groups. The method is to generalize the Jucys-Murphy elements in the group algebras of the symmetric groups to arbitrary Weyl groups and Iwahori-Hecke algebras. The combinatorics of these elements allows one to compute irreducible representations explicitly and often very easily. In this paper we do these computations for Weyl groups and Iwahori-Hecke algebras of types $A_n$, $B_n$, $D_n$, $G_2$. Although these computations are in reach for types $F_4$, $E…
Fix a Dynkin diagram and let p be a coweight. When does there exist an element w of the corresponding Weyl group such that w is p-minuscule and w(p) is dominant? We answer this question for general Coxeter groups. We express and prove these results using a variant of Mozes's game of numbers.
Let $G$ be a simple complex Lie group with Weyl group $W$. We give a formula for the character of $W$ on the zero weight space of any finite dimensional representation of $G$. The formula involves partition functions, generalizing Kostant's partition function. On the elliptic set of $W$ the partition functions are trivial. On the elliptic regular set, the character formula is a monomial product of certain co-roots, up to a constant equal to $0$ or $\pm 1$. For a Coxeter element we recover Kostant's formula for this trace. If the long element $w_0=-1$, our formula leads to a method for determin…
Chapuy and Stump have given a nice generating series for the number of factorisations of a Coxeter element as a product of reflections. Their method is to evaluate case by case a character-theoretic expression. The goal of this note is to give a uniform evaluation of their character-theoretic expression in the case of Weyl groups, by using combinatorial properties of Deligne-Lusztig representations.
This paper is a sequel to work of Dynkin on subroot lattices of root lattices and to work of Carter on presentations of Weyl group elements as products of reflections. The quotients $L/L_1$ are calculated for all irreducible root lattices $L$ and all subroot lattices $L_1$. The reduced (i.e. those with minimal number of reflections) presentations of Weyl group elements as products of arbitrary reflections are classified. Also nonreduced presentations are studied. Quasi Coxeter elements and strict quasi Coxeter elements are defined and classified. An application to extended affine root lattices…
The tables of this title are a first attempt to understand empirically the sizes of certain distinguished sets, introduced by Hankyung Ko, of elements in affine Weyl groups. The sizes are relevant to the computational efficiency of direct approaches to computing characters of modular representations of algebraic groups from characters of corresponding irreducible representations of quantum groups.
For any finite-dimensional complex semisimple Lie algebra two ellipsoids (primary and secondary) are considered. The equations of these ellipsoids are Diophantine equations and the Weyl group acts on the sets of all their Diophantine solutions. This provides two realizations (primary and secondary) of the Weyl group. The primary realization suggests an order on the Weyl group, which is useful for an exploration of the Bruhat order. The secondary realization is useful for finding for any element of the Weyl group all of its reduced expressions, which implies another realization of the Bruhat or…
We consider ad-nilpotent ideals of a Borel subalgebra of a simple Lie algebra. The goal of this paper is two-fold. First, we study the ad-nilpotent ideals lying inside the Heisenberg ideal. The Heisenberg ideal is the nilpotent radical of the centralizer of the highest root vector. Second, we study the ideals having the property that the corresponding domain of the Shi arrangement consists of a single alcove. Such ideals (and the corresponding elements of the affine Weyl group) are called minimax.
We introduce the notion of a strong minuscule element, and prove that the dominant integral weight associated to a strong minuscule element is the fundamental weight corresponding to a short simple root. In addition, we enumerate the strong minuscule elements explicitly, and then as an application of this enumeration, determine the dimension of certain Demazure modules in the finite-dimensional irreducible modules whose highest weights are minuscule weights.
Distinguished involutions in the affine Weyl groups, defined by G. Lusztig, play an essential role in the Kazhdan-Lusztig combinatorics of these groups. A distinguished involution is called canonical if it is the shortest element in its double coset with respect to the finite Weyl group. Each two-sided cell in the affine Weyl group contains precisely one canonical distinguished involution. In this note we calculate the canonical distinguished involutions in the affine Weyl groups of rank <8. We also prove some partial results relating canonical distinguished involutions and Dynkin's diagrams o…
We prove a lifting theorem for odd Frattini covers of finite groups. Using this, we characterize solvable groups and more generally p-solvable groups in terms of containing a triple of elements of distinct prime power orders with product 1. This is also related to various questions about Fried's modular tower program and properties of Hurwitz spaces of covers of curves.
We consider Casimir elements for the orthogonal and symplectic Lie algebras constructed with the use of the Brauer algebra. We calculate the images of these elements under the Harish-Chandra isomorphism and thus show that they (together with the Pfaffian-type element in the even orthogonal case) are algebraically independent generators of the centers of the corresponding universal enveloping algebras.
Let W~ be an affine Weyl group, and let C be a left, right, or two-sided Kazhdan--Lusztig cell in W~. Let Reduced (C) be the set of all reduced expressions of elements of C, regarded as a formal language in the sense of the theory of computation. We show that Reduced (C) is a regular language. Hence the reduced expressions of the elements in any Kazhdan--Lusztig cell can be enumerated by a finite state automaton.
This paper studies connections between the preprojective representations of a valued quiver, the (+)-admissible sequences of vertices, and the Weyl group by associating to each preprojective representation a canonical (+)-admissible sequence. A (+)-admissible sequence is the canonical sequence of some preprojective representation if and only if the product of simple reflections associated to the vertices of the sequence is a reduced word in the Weyl group. As a consequence, for any Coxeter element of the Weyl group associated to an indecomposable symmetrizable generalized Cartan matrix, the gr…
Let C be the centralizer in a finite Weyl group of an elementary abelian 2-subgroup. We show that every complex representation of C can be realized over the field of rational numbers. The same holds for a Sylow 2-subgroup of C.
This paper studies connections between the preprojective modules over the path algebra of a finite connected quiver without oriented cycles, the (+)-admissible sequences of vertices, and the Weyl group. For each preprojective module, there exists a unique up to a certain equivalence shortest (+)-admissible sequence annihilating the module. A (+)-admissible sequence is the shortest sequence annihilating some preprojective module if and only if the product of simple reflections associated to the vertices of the sequence is a reduced word in the Weyl group. These statements have the following app…
For an infinite Coxeter system, one can extend the weak right order to the set of infinite reduced words. This is called limit weak order. In [Transformation Groups 18(1), 2013, 179-231], Lam and Pylyavskyy showed that for affine Weyl groups of type $\widetilde{A}_n$ minimal infinite reduced words under the limit weak order are precisely those infinite Coxeter elements and asked the question of characterization, in terms of infinite reduced words, of the minimal elements of the limit weak order for other affine types. In this paper, we answer this question by characterizing the minimal infinit…
If we have a braid group acting on a derived category by spherical twists, how does a lift of the longest element of the symmetric group act? We give an answer to this question, using periodic twists, for the derived category of modules over a symmetric algebra. The question has already been answered by Rouquier and Zimmermann in a special case. We prove a lifting theorem for periodic twists, which allows us to apply their answer to the general case. Along the way we study tensor products in derived categories of bimodules. We also use the lifting theorem to give new proofs of two known result…
Given an orthogonal representation of a compact group, we show that any element of the connected component of the isometry group of the orbit space lifts to an equivariant isometry of the original Euclidean space. Corollaries include a simple formula for this connected component, which applies to ``most'' representations.
Recently, Lusztig constructed for each reductive group a partition by unions of sheets of conjugacy classes, which is indexed by a subset of the set of conjugacy classes in the associated Weyl group. Sevostyanov subsequently used certain elements in each of these Weyl group conjugacy classes to construct strictly transverse slices to the conjugacy classes in these strata, generalising the classical Steinberg slice, and similar cross sections were built out of different Weyl group elements by He-Lusztig. In this paper we observe that He-Lusztig's and Sevostyanov's Weyl group elements share a ce…
The Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials for finite Weyl groups arise in the geometry of Schubert varieties and representation theory. It was proved very soon after their introduction that they have nonnegative integer coefficients, but no completely combinatorial interpretation for them is known in general. Deodhar (1990) has given a framework for computing the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials, which generally involves recursion. We define embedded factor pattern avoidance for general Coxeter groups and use it to characterize when Deodhar's algorithm yields a simple combinatorial formula for the Kazhdan-Lu…
For a semisimple Lie algebra admitting a good enumeration, we prove a parametrization for the elements in its Weyl group. As an application, we give a coordinate-free comparison between the crystal graph description (when it is known) and the Lie-theoretic description of the Weyl group multiple Dirichlet series in the stable range.
We study a generalization of the results \in \cite{cfk} to the case of $SU(1|1)$ interpreted as the supercircle $S^{1|2}$. We describe all of its finite dimensional complex irreducible representations, we give a reducibility result for representations not containing the trivial character, and we compute explicitly the corresponding matrix elements. In the end we give the Peter-Weyl theorem for $S^{1|2}$.
We introduce and study a family of operators which act in the span of a Weyl group $W$ and provide a multi-parameter solution to the quantum Yang-Baxter equations of the corresponding type. Our operators generalize the "quantum Bruhat operators" that appear in the explicit description of the multiplicative structure of the (small) quantum cohomology ring of $G/B$. The main combinatorial applications concern the "tilted Bruhat order," a graded poset whose unique minimal element is an arbitrarily chosen element $w\in W$. (The ordinary Bruhat order corresponds to the case $w=1$.) Using the mixed …
