Suppose $G$ is a connected complex semisimple group and $W$ is its Weyl group. The lifting of an element of $W$ to $G$ is semisimple. This induces a well-defined map from the set of elliptic conjugacy classes of $W$ to the set of semisimple conjugacy classes of $G$. In this paper, we give a uniform algorithm to compute this map. We also consider the twisted case.
Let W be a Weyl group. We introduce the notion of positive conjugacy class in W. This generalizes the notion of regular elliptic conjugacy class in the sense of Springer.
We define a map from the set of conjugacy classes of a Weyl group W to the representation ring of W tensored with the ring of polynomials in one variable.
Let $G$ be a reductive group over an algebraically closed field and let $W$ be its Weyl group. In a series of papers, Lusztig introduced a map from the set $[W]$ of conjugacy classes of $W$ to the set $[G_u]$ of unipotent classes of $G$. This map, when restricted to the set of elliptic conjugacy classes $[W_e]$ of $W$, is injective. In this paper, we show that Lusztig's map $[W_e] \to [G_u]$ is order-reversing, with respect to the natural partial order on $[W_e]$ arising from combinatorics and the natural partial order on $[G_u]$ arising from geometry.
Let g be a semisimple Lie algebra over the real numbers. We describe an explicit combinatorial construction of the real Weyl group of g with respect to a given Cartan subalgebra. An efficient computation of this Weyl group is important for the classification of regular semisimple subalgebras, real carrier algebras, and real nilpotent orbits associated with g; the latter have various applications in theoretical physics.
Let G be a simple algebraic group of adjoint type over an algebraically closed field of bad characteristic. We show that its sheets of conjugacy classes are parametrized by G-conjugacy classes of pairs (M,O) where M is the identity component of the centralizer of a semisimple element in G and O is a rigid unipotent conjugacy class in M, in analogy with the good characteristic case.
In this note, we formulate an observation that "almost all" irreducible ordinary characters of finite groups of Lie type remain irreducible when restricted to the derived subgroups. To see this, key ingredients are some asymptotic results for conjugacy classes of finite groups of Lie type and strongly regular semisimple elements in dual groups.
In this article we consider a quaternionic inner form $G$ of a $p$-adic classical group defined over a non-archimedian local field of odd residue characteristic. We construct all full self-dual semisimple characters for $G$ and we classify their intertwining classes using endo-parameters. Further we prove an intertwining and conjugacy theorem for self-dual semisimple characters. We give the formulas for the set of intertwiners between self-dual semisimple characters. We count all $G$-intertwining classes of self-dual semisimple characters which lift to the same $\tilde{G}$-intertwining class o…
Let $G$ be a semisimple algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p \geq 0$. At the 1966 International Congress of Mathematicians in Moscow, Robert Steinberg conjectured that two elements $a, a' \in G$ are conjugate in $G$ if and only if $f(a)$ and $f(a')$ are conjugate in $\operatorname{GL}(V)$ for every rational irreducible representation $f: G \rightarrow \operatorname{GL}(V)$. Steinberg showed that the conjecture holds if $a$ and $a'$ are semisimple, and also proved the conjecture when $p = 0$. In this paper, we give a counterexample to Steinberg's conjecture. S…
Let $G$ be a semisimple algebraic group over a field of characteristic $p > 0$. We prove that the dual Weyl modules for $G$ all have $p$-filtrations when $p$ is not too small. Moreover, we give applications of this theorem to $p^n$-filtrations for $n > 1$, to modules containing the Steinberg module as a tensor factor, and to the Donkin conjecture on modules having $p$-filtrations.
The aim of this paper is to give verifiable criteria for the existence of {\em irreducible} homomorphisms of $π_{1}(\mathbb P^1 - \mathcal R)$ into compact semisimple groups, for a finite subset $\mathcal R$ such that the conjugacy classes of the images of lassos around the marked points are fixed. By a theorem in \cite{bs}, this question reduces into one of giving verifiable criteria for the existence of stable $\mathcal G$-torsors on $\mathbb{P}^1_{\mathbb{C}}$, where $\mathcal{G} \to \mathbb{P}^1_\mathbb{C}$ is a a Bruhat-Tits group scheme.
A $GL_d$-pseudocharacter is a function from a group $Γ$ to a ring $k$ satisfying polynomial relations which make it "look like" the character of a representation. When $k$ is an algebraically closed field, Taylor proved that $GL_d$-pseudocharacters of $Γ$ are the same as degree-$d$ characters of $Γ$ with values in $k$, hence are in bijection with equivalence classes of semisimple representations $Γ\rightarrow GL_d(k)$. Recently, V. Lafforgue generalized this result by showing that, for any connected reductive group $H$ over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic 0 and for any grou…
The article is about the representation theory of an inner form~$G$ of a general linear group over a non-archimedean local field. We introduce semisimple characters for~$G$ whose intertwining classes describe conjecturally via Local Langlands correspondence the behavior on wild inertia. These characters also play a potential role to understand the classification of irreducible smooth representations of inner forms of classical groups. We prove the intertwining formula for semisimple characters and an intertwining implies conjugacy like theorem. Further we show that endo-parameters for~$G$, i.e…
In adjoint reductive groups $H$ of type $\mathsf{D}$ we show that for every semisimple element $s$, its centralizer splits over its connected component, i.e., $C_H(s) = C_H(s)^\circ \rtimes \check A$ for some complement $\check A$ with strong stability properties. We derive several consequences about the action of automorphisms on semisimple conjugacy classes. This helps to parametrize characters of the finite groups $\mathsf{D}_{l,\text{sc}}(q)$ and $^2\mathsf{D}_{l,\text{sc}}(q)$ and describe the action of automorphisms on them. It is also a contribution to the final proof of the McKay conje…
Recently, Lusztig constructed for each reductive group a partition by unions of sheets of conjugacy classes, which is indexed by a subset of the set of conjugacy classes in the associated Weyl group. Sevostyanov subsequently used certain elements in each of these Weyl group conjugacy classes to construct strictly transverse slices to the conjugacy classes in these strata, generalising the classical Steinberg slice, and similar cross sections were built out of different Weyl group elements by He-Lusztig. In this paper we observe that He-Lusztig's and Sevostyanov's Weyl group elements share a ce…
