We present SEMBED, an approach for embedding an egocentric object interaction video in a semantic-visual graph to estimate the probability distribution over its potential semantic labels. When object interactions are annotated using unbounded choice of verbs, we embrace the wealth and ambiguity of these labels by capturing the semantic relationships as well as the visual similarities over motion and appearance features. We show how SEMBED can interpret a challenging dataset of 1225 freely annotated egocentric videos, outperforming SVM classification by more than 5%.
Finding the camera pose is an important step in many egocentric video applications. It has been widely reported that, state of the art SLAM algorithms fail on egocentric videos. In this paper, we propose a robust method for camera pose estimation, designed specifically for egocentric videos. In an egocentric video, the camera views the same scene point multiple times as the wearer's head sweeps back and forth. We use this specific motion profile to perform short loop closures aligned with wearer's footsteps. For egocentric videos, depth estimation is usually noisy. In an important departure, w…
We present an approach for identifying picturesque highlights from large amounts of egocentric video data. Given a set of egocentric videos captured over the course of a vacation, our method analyzes the videos and looks for images that have good picturesque and artistic properties. We introduce novel techniques to automatically determine aesthetic features such as composition, symmetry and color vibrancy in egocentric videos and rank the video frames based on their photographic qualities to generate highlights. Our approach also uses contextual information such as GPS, when available, to asse…

We implemented Video Swin Transformer as a base architecture for the tasks of Point-of-No-Return temporal localization and Object State Change Classification. Our method achieved competitive performance on both challenges.
Thanks to the availability and increasing popularity of Egocentric cameras such as GoPro cameras, glasses, and etc. we have been provided with a plethora of videos captured from the first person perspective. Surveillance cameras and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles(also known as drones) also offer tremendous amount of videos, mostly with top-down or oblique view-point. Egocentric vision and top-view surveillance videos have been studied extensively in the past in the computer vision community. However, the relationship between the two has yet to be explored thoroughly. In this effort, we attempt to ex…

Nowadays, there is an upsurge of interest in using lifelogging devices. Such devices generate huge amounts of image data; consequently, the need for automatic methods for analyzing and summarizing these data is drastically increasing. We present a new method for familiar scene recognition in egocentric videos, based on background pattern detection through automatically configurable COSFIRE filters. We present some experiments over egocentric data acquired with the Narrative Clip.
In this report, we present our approach and empirical results of applying masked autoencoders in two egocentric video understanding tasks, namely, Object State Change Classification and PNR Temporal Localization, of Ego4D Challenge 2022. As team TheSSVL, we ranked 2nd place in both tasks. Our code will be made available.

Egocentric cameras are becoming increasingly popular and provide us with large amounts of videos, captured from the first person perspective. At the same time, surveillance cameras and drones offer an abundance of visual information, often captured from top-view. Although these two sources of information have been separately studied in the past, they have not been collectively studied and related. Having a set of egocentric cameras and a top-view camera capturing the same area, we propose a framework to identify the egocentric viewers in the top-view video. We utilize two types of features for…

While egocentric video is becoming increasingly popular, browsing it is very difficult. In this paper we present a compact 3D Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) architecture for long-term activity recognition in egocentric videos. Recognizing long-term activities enables us to temporally segment (index) long and unstructured egocentric videos. Existing methods for this task are based on hand tuned features derived from visible objects, location of hands, as well as optical flow. Given a sparse optical flow volume as input, our CNN classifies the camera wearer's activity. We obtain classificati…
This report describes our submission called "TarHeels" for the Ego4D: Object State Change Classification Challenge. We use a transformer-based video recognition model and leverage the Divided Space-Time Attention mechanism for classifying object state change in egocentric videos. Our submission achieves the second-best performance in the challenge. Furthermore, we perform an ablation study to show that identifying object state change in egocentric videos requires temporal modeling ability. Lastly, we present several positive and negative examples to visualize our model's predictions. The code …
Egocentric cameras are being worn by an increasing number of users, among them many security forces worldwide. GoPro cameras already penetrated the mass market, reporting substantial increase in sales every year. As head-worn cameras do not capture the photographer, it may seem that the anonymity of the photographer is preserved even when the video is publicly distributed. We show that camera motion, as can be computed from the egocentric video, provides unique identity information. The photographer can be reliably recognized from a few seconds of video captured when walking. The proposed meth…

We introduce a novel task of reconstructing a time series of second-person 3D human body meshes from monocular egocentric videos. The unique viewpoint and rapid embodied camera motion of egocentric videos raise additional technical barriers for human body capture. To address those challenges, we propose a simple yet effective optimization-based approach that leverages 2D observations of the entire video sequence and human-scene interaction constraint to estimate second-person human poses, shapes, and global motion that are grounded on the 3D environment captured from the egocentric view. We co…

Recent advances in egocentric video understanding models are promising, but their heavy computational expense is a barrier for many real-world applications. To address this challenge, we propose EgoDistill, a distillation-based approach that learns to reconstruct heavy egocentric video clip features by combining the semantics from a sparse set of video frames with the head motion from lightweight IMU readings. We further devise a novel self-supervised training strategy for IMU feature learning. Our method leads to significant improvements in efficiency, requiring 200x fewer GFLOPs than equival…
Regardless of the tremendous progress, a truly general purpose pipeline for Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) remains a challenge. We investigate the reported failure of state of the art (SOTA) SLAM techniques on egocentric videos. We find that the dominant 3D rotations, low parallax between successive frames, and primarily forward motion in egocentric videos are the most common causes of failures. The incremental nature of SOTA SLAM, in the presence of unreliable pose and 3D estimates in egocentric videos, with no opportunities for global loop closures, generates drifts and leads t…
Recent technological advances have made lightweight, head mounted cameras both practical and affordable and products like Google Glass show first approaches to introduce the idea of egocentric (first-person) video to the mainstream. Interestingly, the computer vision community has only recently started to explore this new domain of egocentric vision, where research can roughly be categorized into three areas: Object recognition, activity detection/recognition, video summarization. In this paper, we try to give a broad overview about the different problems that have been addressed and collect a…
This paper presents a framework for recognition of human activity from egocentric video and eye tracking data obtained from a head-mounted eye tracker. Three channels of information such as eye movement, ego-motion, and visual features are combined for the classification of activities. Image features were extracted using a pre-trained convolutional neural network. Eye and ego-motion are quantized, and the windowed histograms are used as the features. The combination of features obtains better accuracy for activity classification as compared to individual features.

In this paper, we present a new method for egocentric video temporal segmentation based on integrating a statistical mean change detector and agglomerative clustering(AC) within an energy-minimization framework. Given the tendency of most AC methods to oversegment video sequences when clustering their frames, we combine the clustering with a concept drift detection technique (ADWIN) that has rigorous guarantee of performances. ADWIN serves as a statistical upper bound for the clustering-based video segmentation. We integrate both techniques in an energy-minimization framework that serves to di…
Automatically describing video, or video captioning, has been widely studied in the multimedia field. This paper proposes a new task of sensor-augmented egocentric-video captioning, a newly constructed dataset for it called MMAC Captions, and a method for the newly proposed task that effectively utilizes multi-modal data of video and motion sensors, or inertial measurement units (IMUs). While conventional video captioning tasks have difficulty in dealing with detailed descriptions of human activities due to the limited view of a fixed camera, egocentric vision has greater potential to be used …
The emergence of low-cost personal mobiles devices and wearable cameras and the increasing storage capacity of video-sharing websites have pushed forward a growing interest towards first-person videos. Since most of the recorded videos compose long-running streams with unedited content, they are tedious and unpleasant to watch. The fast-forward state-of-the-art methods are facing challenges of balancing the smoothness of the video and the emphasis in the relevant frames given a speed-up rate. In this work, we present a methodology capable of summarizing and stabilizing egocentric videos by ext…

Capturing interaction of hands with objects is important to autonomously detect human actions from egocentric videos. In this work, we present a pyramid video transformer with a dynamic class token generator for egocentric action recognition. Different from previous video transformers, which use the same static embedding as the class token for diverse inputs, we propose a dynamic class token generator that produces a class token for each input video by analyzing the hand-object interaction and the related motion information. The dynamic class token can diffuse such information to the entire mo…
Recently, there has been a growing interest in wearable sensors which provides new research perspectives for 360 ° video analysis. However, the lack of 360 ° datasets in literature hinders the research in this field. To bridge this gap, in this paper we propose a novel Egocentric (first-person) 360° Kinetic human activity video dataset (EgoK360). The EgoK360 dataset contains annotations of human activity with different sub-actions, e.g., activity Ping-Pong with four sub-actions which are pickup-ball, hit, bounce-ball and serve. To the best of our knowledge, EgoK360 is the first dataset in the …

Unsupervised segmentation of action segments in egocentric videos is a desirable feature in tasks such as activity recognition and content-based video retrieval. Reducing the search space into a finite set of action segments facilitates a faster and less noisy matching. However, there exist a substantial gap in machine understanding of natural temporal cuts during a continuous human activity. This work reports on a novel gaze-based approach for segmenting action segments in videos captured using an egocentric camera. Gaze is used to locate the region-of-interest inside a frame. By tracking two…
Egocentric perception has grown rapidly with the advent of immersive computing devices. Human gaze prediction is an important problem in analyzing egocentric videos and has primarily been tackled through either saliency-based modeling or highly supervised learning. We quantitatively analyze the generalization capabilities of supervised, deep learning models on the egocentric gaze prediction task on unseen, out-of-domain data. We find that their performance is highly dependent on the training data and is restricted to the domains specified in the training annotations. In this work, we tackle th…

Recently, there has been a growing interest in analyzing human daily activities from data collected by wearable cameras. Since the hands are involved in a vast set of daily tasks, detecting hands in egocentric images is an important step towards the recognition of a variety of egocentric actions. However, besides extreme illumination changes in egocentric images, hand detection is not a trivial task because of the intrinsic large variability of hand appearance. We propose a hand detector that exploits skin modeling for fast hand proposal generation and Convolutional Neural Networks for hand re…

We compute the saliency map for each video frame, firstly with an off-the-shelf model trained from static images, secondly by adding a a convolutional or conv-LSTM layers trained with a dataset for video saliency prediction. We study each configuration on EgoMon, a new dataset made of seven egocentric videos recorded by three subjects in both free-viewing and task-driven set ups. Our results indicate that the temporal adaptation is beneficial when the viewer is not moving and observin…

Egocentric vision consists in acquiring images along the day from a first person point-of-view using wearable cameras. The automatic analysis of this information allows to discover daily patterns for improving the quality of life of the user. A natural topic that arises in egocentric vision is storytelling, that is, how to understand and tell the story relying behind the pictures. In this paper, we tackle storytelling as an egocentric sequences description problem. We propose a novel methodology that exploits information from temporally neighboring events, matching precisely the nature of egoc…

We introduce an approach for pre-training egocentric video models using large-scale third-person video datasets. Learning from purely egocentric data is limited by low dataset scale and diversity, while using purely exocentric (third-person) data introduces a large domain mismatch. Our idea is to discover latent signals in third-person video that are predictive of key egocentric-specific properties. Incorporating these signals as knowledge distillation losses during pre-training results in models that benefit from both the scale and diversity of third-person video data, as well as representati…

To fill this gap, we introduce MECCANO, the first dataset of egocentric videos to study human-object interactions in industrial-like settings. MECCANO has been acquired by 20 participants who were asked to build a motorbike model, for which they had to interact with tiny objects and tools. The dataset has been explicitly labeled for…

Then it propagates this context over time, together with first-person motion information, through a Gated Recurrent Unit architecture. Ablation studies and experimental evaluation on two publicly available datasets validate the pro…
