In this work we present an a posteriori error indicator for approximation schemes of Runge-Kutta-discontinuous-Galerkin type arising in applications of compressible fluid flows. The purpose of this indicator is not only for mesh adaptivity, we also make use of this to drive model adaptivity. This is where a perhaps costly complex model and a cheaper simple model are solved over different parts of the domain. The a posteriori bound we derive indicates the regions where the complex model can be relatively well approximated with the cheaper one. One such example which we choose to highlight is that of the Navier-Stokes-Fourier equations approximated by Euler's equations.
We present a robust a posteriori error estimator for the weak Galerkin finite element method applied to stationary convection-diffusion equations in the convection-dominated regime. The estimator provides global upper and lower bounds of the error %measured in a suitable norm and is robust in the sense that upper and lower bounds are uniformly bounded with respect to the diffusion coefficient. Results of the numerical experiments are presented to illustrate the performance of the error estimator.
We consider the a posteriori error estimation for convection-diffusion-reaction equations in both diffusion-dominated and convection/reaction-dominated regimes. We present an explicit hybrid estimator, which, in each regime, is proved to be reliable and efficient with constants independent of the parameters in the underlying problem. For convection-dominated problems, the norm introduced by Verf{ü}rth \cite{verf2005confusion} is used to measure the approximation error. Various numerical experiments are performed to (1) demonstrate the robustness of the hybrid estimator; (2) show that the hybri…
In this work we derive a posteriori error estimates for the convection-diffusion-reaction equation coupled with the Darcy-Forchheimer problem by a nonlinear external source depending on the concentration of the fluid. We introduce the variational formulation associated to the problem, and discretize it by using the finite element method. We prove optimal a posteriori errors with two types of calculable error indicators. The first one is linked to the linearization and the second one to the discretization. Then we find upper and lower error bounds under additional regularity assumptions on the …
We introduce a local adaptive discontinuous Galerkin method for convection-diffusion-reaction equations. The proposed method is based on a coarse grid and iteratively improves the solution's accuracy by solving local elliptic problems in refined subdomains. For purely diffusion problems, we already proved that this scheme converges under minimal regularity assumptions [A. Abdulle and G.Rosilho de Souza, ESAIM: M2AN, 53(4):1269--1303, 2019]. In this paper, we provide an algorithm for the automatic identification of the local elliptic problems' subdomains employing a flux reconstruction strategy…

A posteriori error estimates for the finite element approximation of the convection-diffusion-reaction equation based on the variational multiscale concept
We prove residual-type a posteriori error estimates in the maximum norm for a linear scalar elliptic convection-diffusion problem that may be singularly perturbed. Similar error analysis in the energy norm by Verfürth indicates that a dual norm of the {convective derivative of the} error must be added to the natural energy norm in order for the natural residual estimator to be reliable and efficient. We show that the situation is similar for the maximum norm. In particular, we define a mesh-dependent weighted seminorm of the convective error which functions as a maximum-norm counterpart to the…

We apply the recent approach of C. Kreuzer and A. Veeser to derive a robust a posteriori error estimator for the reaction-diffusion equation. The estimator together with the corresponding oscillation yields global upper and local lower bounds for the error in the energy norm, and the involved constants do not depend on the ratio of reaction to diffusion. In particular the new oscillation is also bounded by the error in a robust way.
We consider the numerical approximation of the ill-posed data assimilation problem for stationary convection-diffusion equations and extend our previous analysis in [Numer. Math. 144, 451--477, 2020] to the convection-dominated regime. Slightly adjusting the stabilized finite element method proposed for dominant diffusion, we draw upon a local error analysis to obtain quasi-optimal convergence along the characteristics of the convective field through the data set. The weight function multiplying the discrete solution is taken to be Lipschitz and a corresponding super approximation result (disc…
We present a Petrov-Gelerkin (PG) method for a class of nonlocal convection-dominated diffusion problems. There are two main ingredients in our approach. First, we define the norm on the test space as induced by the trial space norm, i.e., the optimal test norm, so that the inf-sup condition can be satisfied uniformly independent of the problem. We show the well-posedness of a class of nonlocal convection-dominated diffusion problems under the optimal test norm with general assumptions on the nonlocal diffusion and convection kernels. Second, following the framework of Cohen et al.~(2012), we …
This paper studies adaptive least-squares finite element methods for convection-dominated diffusion-reaction problems. The least-squares methods are based on the first-order system of the primal and dual variables with various ways of imposing outflow boundary conditions. The coercivity of the homogeneous least-squares functionals are established, and the a priori error estimates of the least-squares methods are obtained in a norm that incorporates the streamline derivative. All methods have the same convergence rate provided that meshes in the layer regions are fine enough. To increase comput…
This paper presents a multi-scale method for convection-dominated diffusion problems in the regime of large Péclet numbers. The application of the solution operator to piecewise constant right-hand sides on some arbitrary coarse mesh defines a finite-dimensional coarse ansatz space with favorable approximation properties. For some relevant error measures, including the $L^2$-norm, the Galerkin projection onto this generalized finite element space even yields $\varepsilon$-independent error bounds, $\varepsilon$ being the singular perturbation parameter. By constructing an approximate local bas…
This work introduces a new approach to reduce the computational cost of solving partial differential equations (PDEs) with convection-dominated solutions: model reduction with implicit feature tracking. Traditional model reduction techniques use an affine subspace to reduce the dimensionality of the solution manifold and, as a result, yield limited reduction and require extensive training due to the slowly decaying Kolmogorov $n$-width of convection-dominated problems. The proposed approach circumvents the slowly decaying $n$-width limitation by using a nonlinear approximation manifold systema…

The objective of this contribution is to develop a convergence analysis for SUPG-stabilized Virtual Element Methods in diffusion-convection problems that is robust also in the convection dominated regime. For the original method introduced in [Benedetto et al, CMAME 2016] we are able to show an "almost uniform" error bound (in the sense that the unique term that depends in an unfavorable way on the parameters is damped by a higher order mesh-size multiplicative factor). We also introduce a novel discretization of the convection term that allows us to develop error estimates that are fully robu…
