A pedagogical but concise overview of fiber bundles and their connections is provided, in the context of gauge theories in physics. The emphasis is on defining and visualizing concepts and relationships between them, as well as listing common confusions, alternative notations and jargon, and relevant facts and theorems. Special attention is given to detailed figures and geometric viewpoints, some of which would seem to be novel to the literature. Topics are avoided which are well covered in textbooks, such as historical motivations, proofs and derivations, and tools for practical calculations. The present paper is best read in conjunction with the similar paper on Riemannian geometry cited herein.
A nonassociative generalization of the principal fiber bundles with a smooth loop mapping on the fiber is presented. Our approach allows us to construct a new kind of gauge theories that involve higher ''nonassociative'' symmetries.
The present work provides a mathematically rigorous account on super fiber bundle theory, connection forms and their parallel transport, that ties together various approaches. We begin with a detailed introduction to super fiber bundles. We then introduce the concept of so-called relative supermanifolds as well as bundles and connections defined in these categories. Studying these objects turns out to be of utmost importance in order to, among other things, model anticommuting classical fermionic fields in mathematical physics. We then construct the parallel transport map corresponding to such…
Let $π:P\to M^n$ be a principal G-bundle, and let ${\mathcal{L}}: J^1P \toΛ^n(M)$ be a G-invariant Lagrangian density. We obtain the Euler-Poincare equations for the reduced Lagrangian l defined on ${\mathcal C}(P)$, the bundle of connections on P.
We introduce the concepts of a multisymplectic structure and a polysymplectic structure on a general fiber bundle over a general base manifold, define the concept of the symbol of a multisymplectic form, which is a polysymplectic form representing its leading order contribution, and prove Darboux theorems for the existence of canonical local coordinates.
We study the Teichmüller space of negatively curved metrics on a high dimensional manifold, with applications to bundles with negatively curved fibers.
We define contact fiber bundles and investigate conditions for the existence of contact structures on the total space of such a bundle. The results are analogous to minimal coupling in symplectic geometry. The two applications are construction of K-contact manifolds generalizing Yamazaki's fiber join construction and a cross-section theorem for contact moment maps
The moduli space of holomorphic fiber bundles ${\cal M}_n(\Si)$ over a compact Riemann surface $\Si$ is considered. A formula for the regularised determinant and an other for the symplectic form at trivial bundle are proposed.
We give a new construction of strict deformation quantization of symplectic manifolds equipped with a proper Lagrangian fiber bundle structure, whose representation spaces are the quantum Hilbert spaces obtained by geometric quantization. The construction can be regarded as a "lattice approximation of the correspondence between differential operators and principal symbols". We analyze the corresponding formal deformation quantization. We also investigate into relations between our construction and Berezin-Toeplitz deformation quantization.
Let $P(M,G)$ be a principal fiber bundle, let $ω$ be a connection form on $P(M,G)$, and consider a projectable connection $\nabla^{P}$ on $P(M,G)$. The aim of this work is to determine the $\nabla^{P}$-martingales in $P(M,G)$. Our results allow establishing new characterizations of harmonic maps from Riemannian manifolds to principal fiber bundles.
We give sufficient conditions for the existence of a Dirac structure on the total space of a Poisson fiber bundle endowed with a compatible connection. We also show that Cartan and Cartan-Hannay-Berry connections give rise to coupling Dirac structures.
We provide very general symmetrization theorems in arbitrary dimension and codimension, in products, warped products, and certain fiber bundles such as lens spaces, including Steiner, Schwarz, and spherical symmetrization and admitting density.
In our previous papers [Far East Journal of Mathematical Sciences, 35 (2009), 211-223] and [International Journal of Pure and Applied Mathematics, 60 (2010), 15-24] we have developed the theory of Weil prolongation, Weil exponentiability and microlinearity for Frolicher spaces. In this paper we will relativize it so as to obtain the theory of fiber bundles for Frölicher spaces. It is shown that any Weil functor naturally gives rise to a fiber bundle. We will see that the category of fiber bundles over a fixed Frölicher space M and their smooth mappings over M is cartesian closed. We will see a…
This paper is devoted to rigidity of smooth bundles which are equipped with fiberwise geometric or dynamical structure. We show that the fiberwise associated sphere bundle to a bundle whose leaves are equipped with (continuously varying) metrics of negative curvature is a topologically trivial bundle when either the base space is simply connected or, more generally, when the bundle is fiber homotopically trivial. We present two very different proofs of this result: a geometric proof and a dynamical proof. We also establish a number of rigidity results for bundles which are equipped with fiberw…
We prove a stability result for volume forms on fiber bundles with compact base and noncompact fibers. This generalizes the classical results of Moser and Greene--Shiohama, and recent work by the authors.
In this paper, we give concrete descriptions of leafwise cohomology groups and show the regularized determinant expression of the dynamical zeta function for fiber bundles over $S^{1}$. As applications, we show a functional equation and some formulas for special values of the dynamical zeta function.
This work is devoted to new constructions of symplectically fat fiber bundles. The latter are constructed in two ways: using the Kirwan map and expressing the fatness condition in terms of the isotropy representation related to the G-structure over some homogeneous spaces.
We prove that the Teichmüller space $\mathcal{T}^{<0}(M)$ of negatively curved metrics on a hyperbolic manifold $M$ has nontrivial $i$-th rational homotopy groups for some $i> \dim M$. Moreover, some elements of infinite order in $π_i B\mbox{Diff}(M)$ can be represented by bundles over $S^i$ with fiberwise negatively curved metrics.
The aim of this paper is to present a direct and simple proof of a result concerning the existence of metrics of positive Ricci curvature on the total space of fiber bundles with compact structure groups. In particular, it also generalizes and puts in a unified framework the results in Nash \cite{nash} and Poor \cite{poor}. With the intention of disseminating this result, we apply it to build new examples of manifolds with positive Ricci curvature, including bundles whose base consists of gradient shrinking Ricci solitons.
Let $P\to M$ be a principal bundle. Consider a sequence of metrics on $P$ obtained by re-scaling the fibers to points. The Gromov-Hausdorff limit of the tangent bundles over these principal bundles with their Sasaki metric is seen herein to be a locally trivial fiber bundle containing the tangent space to the base as a subbundle in a natural way. Berger 3-spheres provide an example where the limit fibers are still of dimension 3. The fibers are shown to be entirely determined by the riemannian holonomy of the chosen bi-invariant metric.
The equivariant cohomology ring of a GKM manifold is isomorphic to the cohomology ring of its GKM graph. In this paper we explore the implications of this fact for equivariant fiber bundles for which the total space and the base space are both GKM and derive a graph theoretical version of the Leray-Hirsch theorem. Then we apply this result to the equivariant cohomology theory of flag varieties.
Using adiabatic limits of Eta invariants, Rho invariants of the total space of a fiber bundle are investigated. One concern is to formulate the aspects of local index theory for families of Dirac operator in terms of the odd signature operator, and place known results in a context which permits the treatment of Rho invariants. The main focus is, however, to use this to compute Rho invariants for explicit classes of fibered 3-manifolds. More precisely, we consider $\U(1)$-Rho invariants of principal $S^1$-bundles over closed, oriented surfaces as well as mapping tori with torus fiber. Hyperboli…
Every smooth fiber bundle admits a complete (Ehresmann) connection. This result appears in several references, with a proof on which we have found a gap, that does not seem possible to remedy. In this note we provide a definite proof for this fact, explain the problem with the previous one, and illustrate with examples. We also establish a version of the theorem involving Riemannian submersions.
We consider a proper flat fibration with real base and complex fibers. First we construct odd characteristic classes for such fibrations by a method that generalizes constructions of Bismut-Lott. Then we consider the direct image of a fiberwise holomorphic vector bundle, which is a flat vector bundle on the base. We give a Riemann-Roch-Grothendieck theorem calculating the odd real characteristic classes of this flat vector bundle.
Supersymmetry contains initially noninvertible objects, but it is common to deal with the invertible ones only, factorizing former in some extent. We propose to reconsider this ansatz and try to redefine such fundamental notions as supermanifolds, fiber bundles and homotopies using some weakening invertibility conditions. The prefix semi- reflects the fact that the underlying morphisms form corresponding semigroups consisting of a known group part and a new ideal noninvertible part. We found that the absence of invertibility gives us the generalization of the cocycle conditions for transition …
We study the linear stability of Einstein metrics of Riemannian submersion type. First, we derive a general instability condition for such Einstein metrics and provide some applications. Then we study instability arising from Riemannian product structures on the base. As an application, we estimate the coindex of the Einstein metrics constructed in \cite{WZ90} and \cite{Wan92}. Finally, we investigate more closely the linear stability of Einstein metrics from circle bundle constructions and obtain a rigidity result for linearly stable Einstein metrics of this type.
We prove vanishing results for the generalized Miller-Morita-Mumford classes of some smooth bundles whose fiber is a closed manifold that supports a nonpositively curved Riemannian metric. We also find, under some extra conditions, that the vertical tangent bundle is topologically rigid.
A locally conformally symplectic (LCS) form is an almost symplectic form $ω$ such that a closed one-form $θ$ exists with $dω=θ\wedgeω$. A fiber bundle with LCS fiber $(F, ω,θ)$ is called LCS if the transition maps are diffeomorphisms of $F$ preserving $ω$ (and hence $θ$). In this paper, we find conditions for the total space of an LCS fiber bundle to admit an LCS form which restricts to the LCS form of the fibers. This is done by using the coupling form introduced by Sternberg and Weinstein, \cite{gls}, in the symplectic case. The construction is related to an adapted Hamiltonian action called…
In this note we show that if a compact Kahler manifold with trivial canonical bundle is the total space of a holomorphic fibration without singular fibers, then the fibration is a holomorphic fiber bundle. In the algebraic case, the fibration becomes trivial after a finite base change.
