We present an asymptotically flat supersymmetric black lens solution with the horizon topology L(n,1)=S^3/Z_n in the five-dimensional minimal ungauged supergravity. We show that the black lens carries a mass, two independent angular momenta, electric charge and (n-1) magnetic fluxes, among which only the (n+1) quantities are independent.
Based on superconformal tensor calculus in five dimensions, we construct the supersymmetric completion of Gauss-Bonnet combination. We study the vacuum solutions with AdS_2 x S^3 and AdS_3 x S^2 structures. We also analyze the spectrum around a maximally supersymmetric Minkowski_5.
We obtain the gravitational and electromagnetic field of a spinning radiation beam-pulse (a gyraton) in minimal five-dimensional gauged supergravity and show under which conditions the solution preserves part of the supersymmetry. The configurations represent generalizations of Lobatchevski waves on AdS with nonzero angular momentum, and possess a Siklos-Virasoro reparametrization invariance. We compute the holographic stress-energy tensor of the solutions and show that it transforms without anomaly under these reparametrizations. Furthermore, we present supersymmetric gyratons both in gauged …
We present a new supersymmetric, asymptotically flat, black hole solution to five-dimensional U(1)^3-supergravity which is regular on and outside an event horizon of lens space topology L(2,1). The solution has seven independent parameters and uplifts to a family of 1/8-supersymmetric D1-D5-P black brane solutions to Type IIB supergravity. The decoupling limit is asymptotically AdS(3) x S^3 x T^4, with a near-horizon geometry that is a twisted product of the near-horizon geometry of the extremal BTZ black hole and L(2,1) x T^4, although it is not (locally) a product space in the bulk. We show …
We determine the action for five-dimensional maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills in off-shell supergravity backgrounds. The resulting theory contains novel five-dimensional BF type couplings as well as cubic scalar interactions which vanish in flat space.
We construct supersymmetric theories on the SU(3)xU(1) symmetric squashed five-sphere with 2, 4, 6, and 12 supercharges. We first determine the Killing equation by dimensional reduction from 6d, and use Noether procedure to construct actions. The supersymmetric Yang-Mills action is straightforwardly obtained from the supersymmetric Chern-Simons action by using a supersymmetry preserving constant vector multiplet.
We examine if there exists a zero-energy supersymmetric ground state for the fundamental five-brane. Looking for an $SO(6)\times SO(2)$- invariant ground state, we construct, in the light-cone gauge, perturbatively a Nicolai map up to third order in the inverse five-brane tension. We show that the Nicolai map equilibrates and the five-brane has a zero-energy normalizable supersymmetric vacuum state. For the other p-branes, we argue that only the three-brane has a zero-energy ground state.
We present a closed-form expression for the supersymmetric non-Abelian Chern-Simons action in conventional five-dimensional N=1 superspace. Our construction makes use of the superform formalism to generate supersymmetric invariants. Similar ideas are applied to construct supersymmetric actions for off-shell supermultiplets with an intrinsic central charge. In particular, the large tensor multiplet is described in superspace for the first time.
We construct supersymmetric completions of various curvature squared terms in five dimensional supergravity with eight supercharges. Adopting the dilaton Weyl multiplet, we obtain the minimal off-shell supersymmetric Ricci scalar squared as well as all vector multiplets coupled curvature squared invariants. Since the minimal off-shell supersymmetric Riemann tensor squared and Gauss-Bonnet combination in the dilaton Weyl multiplet have been obtained before, both the minimal off-shell and the vector multiplets coupled curvature squared invariants in the dilation Weyl multiplet are complete. We a…
We introduce supersymmetric Rényi entropies for $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric gauge theories in five dimensions. The matrix model representation is obtained using the localization method and the large-$N$ behavior is studied. The gravity dual is a supersymmetric charged topological AdS$_6$ black hole in the Romans $F(4)$ supergravity. The variation of the supersymmetric Rényi entropy due to the insertion of a BPS Wilson loop is computed. We find perfect agreements between the large-$N$ and the dual gravity computations both with and without the Wilson loop operator.
Herein, we consider a topologically twisted version of maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in five dimensions which was introduced by Witten in 2011. We consider this theory on a five manifold of the form M_4 x I for M_4 an oriented Riemannian four manifold. The complete and unique action of the theory in bulk is written down and is shown to be invariant under two scalar supersymmetries.
A recent study of filtered deformations of (graded subalgebras of) the minimal five-dimensional Poincaré superalgebra resulted in two classes of maximally supersymmetric spacetimes. One class are the well-known maximally supersymmetric backgrounds of minimal five-dimensional supergravity, whereas the other class does not seem to be related to supergravity. This paper is a study of the Kaluza--Klein reductions to four dimensions of this latter class of maximally supersymmetric spacetimes. We classify the lorentzian and riemannian Kaluza--Klein reductions of these backgrounds, determine the frac…
We compute the supersymmetric Renyi entropy across an entangling three-sphere for five-dimensional superconformal field theories using localization. For a class of USp(2N) gauge theories we construct a holographic dual 1/2 BPS black hole solution of Euclidean Romans F(4) supergravity. The large N limit of the gauge theory results agree perfectly with the supergravity computations.
We determine all asymptotically flat, supersymmetric and biaxisymmetric soliton and black hole solutions to five dimensional minimal supergravity. In particular, we show that the solution must be a multi-centred solution with a Gibbons-Hawking base. The proof involves combining local constraints from supersymmetry with global constraints for stationary and biaxisymmetric spacetimes. This reveals that the horizon topology must be one of S^3, S^1 x S^2 or a lens space L(p,1), thereby providing a refinement of the allowed horizon topologies. We construct the general smooth solution for each possi…
We present a superconformal tensor calculus for an arbitrary number of five dimensional N=2 linear multiplets. We also demonstrate how to construct higher derivative invariants and higher order supersymmetric off-diagonal models. Finally, we show the procedure required for the derivation of the supersymmetric completion of the non-Abelian $F^4$ action.
We present a systematic classification of half-supersymmetric solutions of gauged N=2, D=5 supergravity coupled to an arbitrary number of abelian vector multiplets for which at least one of the Killing spinors generate a time-like Killing vector.
The classification of 1/4-supersymmetric solutions of five dimensional gauged supergravity coupled to arbitrary many abelian vector multiplets, which was initiated in hep-th/0401129, is completed. The structure of all solutions for which the Killing vector constructed from the Killing spinor is null is investigated in both the gauged and the ungauged theories and some new solutions are constructed.
We construct Euclidean 5d supersymmetric gauge theories on the five-sphere with vector and hypermultiplets. The SUSY transformation and the action are explicitly determined from the standard Noether procedure as well as from off-shell supergravity. Using localization techniques, the path-integral is shown to be restricted to the integration over a generalization of instantons on CP^2 and the Coulomb moduli.
Exact black hole solutions of the five dimensional heterotic $S$-$T$-$U$ model including all perturbative quantum corrections and preserving $1/2$ of $N=2$ supersymmetry are studied. It is shown that the quantum corrections yield a bound on electric charges and harmonic functions of the solutions.
All purely bosonic supersymmetric solutions of minimal supergravity in five dimensions are classified. The solutions preserve either one half or all of the supersymmetry. Explicit examples of new solutions are given, including a large family of plane-fronted waves and a maximally supersymmetric analogue of the Gödel universe which lifts to a solution of eleven dimensional supergravity that preserves 20 supersymmetries.
Spinorial geometry techniques have recently been used to classify all half supersymmetric solutions in gauged five dimensional supergravity with vector multiplets. In this paper we consider solutions for which at least one of the Killing spinors generates a timelike Killing vector. We obtain coordinate transformations which considerably simplify the solutions, and in a number of cases, we obtain explicitly some additional Killing vectors which were hidden in the original analysis.
We study non-supersymmetric solutions of five dimensional N=2 supergravity theories coupled to an arbitrary number of abelian vector multiplets. The solutions constructed can be considered as deformations of known supersymmetric black hole and string solutions. General constraints coming from the analysis of the equations of motion are derived. These represent explicit conditions on the charges of the black holes and strings. The constraints are analyzed for theories where the scalar manifolds are symmetric spaces and explicit solutions are constructed in cases where the prepotential of the th…
We formulate maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in five dimensions in light-cone superspace. The light-cone Hamiltonian is of the quadratic form and the theory can be understood as an oxidation of the N=4 Super Yang-Mills Theory in four dimensions. We specifically study three-point counterterms and show how these counterterms vanish on-shell. This study is a preliminary to set up the technique in order to study possible four-point counterterms.
We construct rigid supersymmetric gauge theories on Riemannian five-manifolds. We follow a holographic approach, realizing the manifold as the conformal boundary of a six-dimensional bulk supergravity solution. This leads to a systematic classification of five-dimensional supersymmetric backgrounds with gravity duals. We show that the background metric is furnished with a conformal Killing vector, which generates a transversely holomorphic foliation with a transverse Hermitian structure. Moreover, we prove that any such metric defines a supersymmetric background. Finally, we construct supersym…
We present the gravity dual of large N supersymmetric gauge theories on a squashed five-sphere. The one-parameter family of solutions is constructed in Euclidean Romans F(4) gauged supergravity in six dimensions, and uplifts to massive type IIA supergravity. By renormalizing the theory with appropriate counterterms we evaluate the renormalized on-shell action for the solutions. We also evaluate the large N limit of the gauge theory partition function, and find precise agreement.
A classification of supersymmetric solutions of five dimensional ungauged supergravity coupled to arbitrary many abelian vector multiplets is used to prove a uniqueness theorem for asymptotically flat supersymmetric black holes with regular horizons. It is shown that the near-horizon geometries of solutions for which the scalars and gauge field strengths are sufficiently regular on the horizon are flat space, AdS_3 x S^2, or the near-horizon BMPV solution. Furthermore, the only black hole which has the near-horizon BMPV geometry for its near-horizon geometry is the solution found by Chamseddin…
We present a systematic study of the moduli space of asymptotically flat, supersymmetric and biaxisymmetric black hole solutions to five-dimensional minimal supergravity. Previously, it has been shown that such solutions must be multi-centred solutions with a Gibbons-Hawking base. In this paper we perform a full analysis of three-centred solutions with a single black hole, for which there are seven regular black hole solutions. We find that four of these can have the same conserved charges as the BMPV black hole. These consist of a black lens with L(3,1) horizon topology and three distinct fam…
We study localization of five-dimensional supersymmetric $U(1)$ gauge theory on $\mathbb{S}^3 \times \mathbb{R}_θ^{2}$ where $\mathbb{R}_θ^{2}$ is a noncommutative (NC) plane. The theory can be isomorphically mapped to three-dimensional supersymmetric $U(N \to \infty)$ gauge theory on $\mathbb{S}^3$ using the matrix representation on a separable Hilbert space on which NC fields linearly act. Therefore the NC space $\mathbb{R}_θ^{2}$ allows for a flexible path to derive matrix models via localization from a higher-dimensional supersymmetric NC $U(1)$ gauge theory. The result shows a rich dualit…
We present an asymptotically flat and stationary multi-black lens solution with bi-axisymmetry of $U(1)\times U(1)$ as a supersymmetric solution in the five-dimensional minimal ungauged supergravity. We show that the spatial cross section of each degenerate Killing horizon admits different lens space topologies of $L(n,1)=S^3/{\mathbb Z_n}$ as well as a sphere $S^3$. Moreover, we show that in contrast to the higher dimensional Majumdar-Papapertrou multi-black hole and multi-BMPV black hole spacetimes, the metric is smooth on each horizon even if the horizon topology is spherical.
We generalize recent results regarding the phase space of the mass deformed $E_1$ fixed point to a full class of five-dimensional superconformal field theories, known as $X_{1,N}$. As in the $E_1$ case, a phase transition occurs as a supersymmetry preserving and a supersymmetry breaking mass deformations are appropriately tuned. The order of such phase transition could not be unequivocally determined in the $E_1$ case. For $X_{1,N}$ instead, we can show that at large $N$ there exists a regime where the phase transition is second order. Our findings give supporting evidence for the existence of…
We explicitly truncate N = 8 gauged supergravity in five dimensions to its SU(3)-invariant sector with dilaton and axion fields. We show that this truncation has a solution which is identical to the super Janus constructed in N = 2 gauged supergravity in five dimensions. Then we lift the solution of the SU(3)-invariant truncation to type IIB supergravity by employing the consistent truncation ansatz. We show that the lifted solution falls into a special case of the supersymmetric Janus solutions constructed in type IIB supergravity. Additionally, we also prove that the lifted solution provides…
We investigate consistency conditions for supersymmetric gauge theories in higher dimensions. First, we give a survey of Seiberg's necessary conditions for the existence of such theories with simple groups in five and six dimensions. We then make some comments on how theories in different dimensions are related. In particular, we discuss how the Landau pole can be avoided in theories that are not asymptotically free in four dimensions, and the mixing of tensor and vector multiplets in dimensional reduction from six dimensions.
We show that there exist supersymmetric solutions of five-dimensional, pure, $\mathcal{N}=1$ Supergravity such that the norm of the supersymmetric Killing vector, built out of the Killing spinor, is a real not-everywhere analytic function such that all its derivatives vanish at a point where the Killing vector field becomes null. The norm of the Killing vector field then is not an analytic function on a neighborhood around this point. We explicitly construct such solutions by using a multi-center Gibbons-Hawking base. Although many of these solutions have infinite charges, we find explicit exa…
Building on the covariant supergraph techniques in 4D N = 2 harmonic superspace, we develop a manifestly 5D N = 1 supersymmetric and gauge covariant formalism to compute the one-loop effective action for a hypermultiplet coupled to a background vector multiplet. As a simple application, we demonstrate the generation of a supersymmetric Chern-Simons action at the quantum level, both in the Coulomb and the non-Abelian phases. These superfield results are in agreement with the earlier component considerations of Seiberg et al. Our analysis suggests that similar calculations in terms of hybrid 4D …
We study magnetically-charged supersymmetric flow equations in a consistent truncation of gauged $\mathcal{N}\,=\,8$ supergravity in five dimensions. This truncation gives gauged $\mathcal{N}\,=\,2$ supergravity coupled to two vector multiplets and two hypermultiplets. We derive magnetically-charged flow equations of scalar fields from vector and hypermultiplets. It turns out that there could be only up to two nontrivial scalar fields out of eight from the hypermultiplets. Along the way, we recover some known $AdS_3$ solutions of the flow equations.
We consider the classification of supersymmetric AdS$_5$ black hole solutions to minimal gauged supergravity that admit a torus symmetry. This problem reduces to finding a class of toric Kähler metrics on the base space, which in symplectic coordinates are determined by a symplectic potential. We derive the general form of the symplectic potential near any component of the horizon or axis of symmetry, which determines its singular part for any black hole solution in this class, including possible new solutions such as black lenses and multi-black holes. We find that the most general known blac…
We analyze the structure of a particular higher derivative correction of five-dimensional ungauged and gauged supergravity with eight supercharges. Specifically, we determine all the purely bosonic terms which are connected by the supersymmetry transformation to the mixed gauge-gravitational Chern-Simons term, W wedge tr R wedge R. Our construction utilizes the superconformal formulation of supergravity. As an application, we determine the condition for the supersymmetric anti-de Sitter vacuum with this term. We check that it gives precisely the same condition as the a-maximization in four-dim…

Relying on the method of spinorial geometry, purely bosonic supersymmetric solutions in N=2, five-dimensional supergravity theories coupled to vector multiplets in all space-time signatures are found. Explicit examples of some new solutions are presented
We investigate supersymmetric solutions of minimal gauged supergravity in five dimensions, in the timelike class. We propose an ansatz based on a four-dimensional local orthotoric Kaehler metric and reduce the problem to a single sixth-order equation for two functions, each of one variable. We find an analytic, asymptotically locally AdS solution comprising five parameters. For a conformally flat boundary, this reduces to a previously known solution with three parameters, representing the most general solution of this type known in the minimal theory. We discuss the possible relevance of certa…
Supersymmetric, asymptotically AdS5, black hole solutions of five dimensional gauged supergravity coupled to arbitrarily many abelian vector multiplets are presented. The general nature of supersymmetric solutions of this theory is discussed. All maximally supersymmetric solutions of this theory (with or without gauging) are obtained.
Five-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories are investigated from the viewpoint of random plane partitions. It is shown that random plane partitions are factorizable as q-deformed random partitions so that they admit the interpretations as five-dimensional Yang-Mills and as topological string amplitudes. In particular, they lead to the exact partition functions of five-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills with the Chern-Simons terms. We further show that some specific partitions, which we call the ground partitions, describe the perturbative regime of t…
We classify half-supersymmetric solutions of gauged N=2, D=5 supergravity coupled to an arbitrary number of abelian vector multiplets for which all of the Killing spinors generate null Killing vectors. We show that there are four classes of solutions, and in each class we find the metric, scalars and gauge field strengths. When the scalar manifold is symmetric, the solutions correspond to a class of local near horizon geometries recently found by Kunduri and Lucietti.
In higher-dimensional Schwarzschild black hole spacetimes, there are no stable bound orbits of particles. In contrast to this, it is shown that there are stable bound orbits in a five-dimensional black lens spacetime.
We construct the gravity duals of large N supersymmetric gauge theories defined on squashed five-spheres with SU(3) x U(1) symmetry. These five-sphere backgrounds are continuously connected to the round sphere, and we find a one-parameter family of 3/4 BPS deformations and a two-parameter family of (generically) 1/4 BPS deformations. The gravity duals are constructed in Euclidean Romans F(4) gauged supergravity in six dimensions, and uplift to massive type IIA supergravity. We holographically renormalize the Romans theory, and use our general result to compute the renormalized on-shell actions…
We perform an $su(2)$ Hamiltonian reduction in the bosonic sector of the $su(2)$-invariant action for two free $(4,4,0)$ supermultiplets. As a result, we get the five dimensional \Nf supersymmetric mechanics describing the motion of an isospin carrying particle interacting with a Yang monopole. Some possible generalizations of the action to the cases of systems with a more general bosonic action constructed with the help of the ordinary and twisted \Nf hypermultiplets are considered.
We study the stability of Kaluza-Klein (KK) modes in five-dimensional N=1 supersymmetric QCD compactified on S^1 using the D3-brane probe realization. We find a phenomenon in which the quark KK mode with the KK number n=1 decays while other KK modes are stable. This is contrary to the ordinary assumption that the state with n=1 is the most stable in quark KK modes. In addition, we show that a massive gauge singlet state carrying the KK number exists stably. This provides a proper candidate for dark matter.
Using the entropy function formalism we compute the entropy of extremal supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric black holes in N=2 supergravity theories in four dimensions with higher derivative corrections. For supersymmetric black holes our results agree with all previous analysis. However in some examples where the four dimensional theory is expected to arise from the dimensional reduction of a five dimensional theory, there is an apparent disagreement between our results for non-supersymmetric black holes and those obtained by using the five dimensional description. This indicates that for t…
Based on the construction by Hosomichi, Seong and Terashima we consider N=1 supersymmetric 5D Yang-Mills theory with matter on a five-sphere with radius r. This theory can be thought of as a deformation of the theory in flat space with deformation parameter r and this deformation preserves 8 supercharges. We calculate the full perturbative partition function as a function of r/g^2, where g is the Yang-Mills coupling, and the answer is given in terms of a matrix model. We perform the calculation using localization techniques. We also argue that in the large N-limit of this deformed 5D Yang-Mill…
We discuss five-dimensional supersymmetric gauge theories. An anomaly renders some theories inconsistent and others consistent only upon including a Wess-Zumino type Chern-Simons term. We discuss some necessary conditions for existence of nontrivial renormalization group fixed points and find all possible gauge groups and matter content which satisfy them. In some cases, the existence of these fixed points can be inferred from string duality considerations. In other cases, they arise from M-theory on Calabi-Yau threefolds. We explore connections between aspects of the gauge theory and Calabi-Y…
It has been proven in arXiv:1303.0853 that all regular supersymmetric near-horizon geometries in minimal five-dimensional gauged supergravity admit automatic supersymmetry enhancement. Using this result, the integrability conditions associated with the existence of the additional supersymmetry are analysed, and the near-horizon geometries are determined explicitly. We show that they all correspond to previously constructed examples. Hence, there are no supersymmetric black ring solutions in minimal five-dimensional gauged supergravity.
We consider multiple Euclidean D3-branes in a specific supergravity solution, which consists of a self-dual 5-form RR field in a flat background. We propose a deformation of ${\cal N}=4$ SYM action describing the dynamics of D3-branes in this background. We look at the supersymmetries of ${\cal N}=4$ SYM theory consistent with those preserved by the background. We derive the Chern-Simons action induced by the RR field, and show that the whole action can be supersymmetrized. This we do by deforming the supersymmetry transformations and using the BRST-like characteristic of the unbroken supercha…
We construct supersymmetric, asymptotically AdS$_5$ gravitational soliton solutions of five-dimensional gauged supergravity coupled to arbitrarily many vector multiplets. These generalize the supersymmetric solitons of $U(1)^3$ gauged supergravity previously constructed by Chong, Cvetic, Lu, and Pope. We show that the solitons contain evanescent ergosurfaces and give an argument that these solitons should be nonlinearly unstable.
We develop a formalism to construct supersymmetric backgrounds within the superspace formulation for five-dimensional (5D) conformal supergravity given in arXiv:0802.3953. Our approach is applicable to any off-shell formulation for 5D minimal Poincare and anti-de Sitter supergravity theories realized as the Weyl multiplet coupled with two compensators. For those superspace backgrounds which obey the equations of motion for (gauged) supergravity, we naturally reproduce the supersymmetric solutions constructed a decade ago by Gauntlett et al. For certain supersymmetric backgrounds with eight sup…
We analyse the most general bosonic supersymmetric solutions of type IIB supergravity whose metrics are warped products of five-dimensional anti-de Sitter space (AdS$_5$) with a five-dimensional Riemannian manifold $M_{5}$, where the five-form flux vanishes, while all remaining fluxes are allowed to be non-vanishing consistent with SO(4,2) symmetry. This completes the program of classifying all supersymmetric solutions of ten and eleven-dimensional supergravity with an AdS$_5$ factor. We investigate the supersymmetry conditions in some special cases, and demonstrate how these are satisfied by …
A one-parameter family of new solutions representing Einstein spaces in $d=5,7$ is presented, and used to construct non-supersymmetric backgrounds in type IIB and M-theory that asymptotically approach $AdS_5\times S^5$ and $AdS_7\times S^4$ . Upon dimensional reduction, the latter gives a type IIA solution representing a 4-brane with Ramond-Ramond charge, which interpolates between the "near-horizon" non-extremal D4 brane and a geometry connected by T-duality to a new constant dilaton solution in type IIB. We discuss the possibility that M-theory on this space may be related to a (0,2) six-dim…
All purely bosonic supersymmetric solutions of minimal gauged supergravity in five dimensions are classified. The solutions fall into two classes depending on whether the Killing vector constructed from the Killing spinor is time-like or null. When it is timelike, the solutions are determined by a four-dimensional Kahler base-manifold, up to an anti-holomorphic function, and generically preserve 1/4 of the supersymmetry. When it is null we provide a precise prescription for constructing the solutions and we show that they generically preserve 1/4 of the supersymmetry. We show that $AdS_5$ is t…
The five dimensional version of the Green-Schwarz mechanism can be invoked to cancel U(1) anomalies on the boundaries of brane world models. In five dimensions there are two dual descriptions that employ either a two-form tensor field or a vector field. We present the supersymmetric extensions of these dual theories using four dimensional N=1 superspace. For the supersymmetrization of the five dimensional Chern-Simons three form this requires the introduction of a new chiral Chern-Simons multiplet. We derive the supersymmetric vector/tensor duality relations and show that not only is the usual…
