In higher-dimensional Schwarzschild black hole spacetimes, there are no stable bound orbits of particles. In contrast to this, it is shown that there are stable bound orbits in a five-dimensional black lens spacetime.
We present an asymptotically flat supersymmetric black lens solution with the horizon topology L(n,1)=S^3/Z_n in the five-dimensional minimal ungauged supergravity. We show that the black lens carries a mass, two independent angular momenta, electric charge and (n-1) magnetic fluxes, among which only the (n+1) quantities are independent.
We present a new supersymmetric, asymptotically flat, black hole solution to five-dimensional supergravity. It is regular on and outside an event horizon of lens space topology L(2,1). It is the first example of an asymptotically flat black hole with lens space topology. The solution is characterised by a charge, two angular momenta and a magnetic flux through a non-contractible disc region ending on the horizon, with one constraint relating these.
We compute the supersymmetric partition function on L(r,1)xS^1, the lens space index, for 4d gauge theories related by supersymmetric dualities and involving non simply-connected groups. This computation is sensitive to the global properties of the underlying gauge group and to discrete theta angle parameters and thus distinguishes versions of dualities differing by such. We explicitly discuss N=1 so(N_c) Seiberg dualities and N=4 su(N_c) S-dualities.
We obtain a supersymmetric Kaluza-Klein black lens solution in Taub-NUT space in the five-dimensional minimal ungauged supergravity. It is shown that the spacetime has a degenerate horizon with the spatial cross section of the lens space topology L(n,1) and looks like the four-dimensional Minkowski spacetime in the neighborhood of spatial infinity. In contrast to the horizon topology, from a five-dimensional point of view, the spatial infinity has the topology of S^3 rather than the lens space. For this reason, this solution has an asymptotically flat limit. We discuss several properties of su…
In contrast to five-dimensional Schwarzschild-Tangherlini and Myers-Perry backgrounds, we show that there are stable bound orbits of massive/massless particles in five-dimensional black lens backgrounds, in particular, the supersymmetric black lens with $L(2,1)$ and $L(3,1)$ topologies. We also show that in the zero-energy limit of massless particles, there exist stable circular orbits on the evanescent ergosurfaces.
We obtain the lens integral pentagon identity for three-dimensional mirror dual theories in terms of hyperbolic hypergeometric functions via reduction of equality for $\mathcal N=2$ lens supersymmetric partition functions of a certain supersymmetric IR duality.
We construct an asymptotically flat, stationary and biaxisymmetric supersymmetric black lens solution in five-dimensional U(1)^3 supergravity. It is shown that the spatial cross section of the horizon is topologically the lens space of L(n,1), and the spacetime is regular on/outside the event horizon. The black lens carries (3n+2) physical quantities, three electric charges, two angular momenta and 3(n-1) magnetic fluxes.
We prove a pair of transformation formulas for multivariate elliptic hypergeometric sum/integrals associated to the $A_n$ and $BC_n$ root systems, generalising the formulas previously obtained by Rains. The sum/integrals are expressed in terms of the lens elliptic gamma function, a generalisation of the elliptic gamma function that depends on an additional integer variable, as well as a complex variable and two elliptic nomes. As an application of our results, we prove an equality between $S^1\times S^3/\mathbb{Z}_r$ supersymmetric indices, for a pair of four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=1$ supers…
We present a new supersymmetric, asymptotically flat, black hole solution to five-dimensional U(1)^3-supergravity which is regular on and outside an event horizon of lens space topology L(2,1). The solution has seven independent parameters and uplifts to a family of 1/8-supersymmetric D1-D5-P black brane solutions to Type IIB supergravity. The decoupling limit is asymptotically AdS(3) x S^3 x T^4, with a near-horizon geometry that is a twisted product of the near-horizon geometry of the extremal BTZ black hole and L(2,1) x T^4, although it is not (locally) a product space in the bulk. We show …
We present a systematic study of the moduli space of asymptotically flat, supersymmetric and biaxisymmetric black hole solutions to five-dimensional minimal supergravity. Previously, it has been shown that such solutions must be multi-centred solutions with a Gibbons-Hawking base. In this paper we perform a full analysis of three-centred solutions with a single black hole, for which there are seven regular black hole solutions. We find that four of these can have the same conserved charges as the BMPV black hole. These consist of a black lens with L(3,1) horizon topology and three distinct fam…
We compute the Lens space index for 4d supersymmetric gauge theories involving symplectic gauge groups. This index can distinguish between different gauge groups from a given algebra and it matches across theories related by supersymmetric dualities. We provide explicit calculations for $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM and for classes of $\mathcal{N}=2$ and $\mathcal{N}=1$ Lagrangian quivers related by S-duality. In these cases the index matches across the S-dual phases, while models in different S-duality orbits have a different Lens index. We provide analogous computations for a 4d $\mathcal{N}=1$ toric …
We study the three-dimensional lens partition function for $\mathcal N=2$ supersymmetric gauge dual theories on $S^3/\mathbb{Z}_r$ by using the gauge/YBE correspondence. This correspondence relates supersymmetric gauge theories to exactly solvable models of statistical mechanics. The equality of partition functions for the three-dimensional supersymmetric dual theories can be written as an integral identity for hyperbolic hypergeometric functions. We obtain such an integral identity which can be written as the star-triangle relation for Ising type integrable models and as the integral pentagon…
We determine and classify the electric-magnetic duality orbits of fluxes supporting asymptotically flat, extremal black branes in $D=4,5,6$ space-time dimensions in the so-called non-supersymmetric magic Maxwell-Einstein theories, which are consistent truncations of maximal supergravity and which can be related to Jordan algebras (and related Freudenthal triple systems) over the split complex numbers $\mathbb{C}_{s}$ and the split quaternions $\mathbb{H}_{s}$. By studying the stabilizing subalgebras of suitable representatives, realized as bound states of specific weight vectors of the corresp…
We study extremal black hole solutions of the S3 model (obtained by setting S=T=U in the STU model) using group theoretical methods. Upon dimensional reduction over time, the S3 model exhibits the pseudo-Riemannian coset structure G/K with G=G2(2) and K=SO(2,2). We study nilpotent K-orbits of G2(2) corresponding to non-rotating single-center extremal solutions. We find six such distinct K-orbits. Three of these orbits are supersymmetric, one is non-supersymmetric, and two are unphysical. We write general solutions and discuss examples in all four physical orbits. We show that all solutions in …
We consider the classification of supersymmetric AdS$_5$ black hole solutions to minimal gauged supergravity that admit a torus symmetry. This problem reduces to finding a class of toric Kähler metrics on the base space, which in symplectic coordinates are determined by a symplectic potential. We derive the general form of the symplectic potential near any component of the horizon or axis of symmetry, which determines its singular part for any black hole solution in this class, including possible new solutions such as black lenses and multi-black holes. We find that the most general known blac…
We determine all asymptotically flat, supersymmetric and biaxisymmetric soliton and black hole solutions to five dimensional minimal supergravity. In particular, we show that the solution must be a multi-centred solution with a Gibbons-Hawking base. The proof involves combining local constraints from supersymmetry with global constraints for stationary and biaxisymmetric spacetimes. This reveals that the horizon topology must be one of S^3, S^1 x S^2 or a lens space L(p,1), thereby providing a refinement of the allowed horizon topologies. We construct the general smooth solution for each possi…
We construct new supersymmetric black ring solutions on the Eguchi-Hanson base space as solutions of five-dimensional minimal supergravity. The solutions have the same two angular momentum components and the asymptotic structure on timeslices is asymptotically locally Euclidean. The S^1-direction of the black ring is along the equator on a S^2-bolt on the Eguchi-Hanson space. We also investigate the limit to a black hole, which describes the BMPV black hole with the topology of the lens space L(2;1)=S^3/Z_2.
We present an asymptotically flat and stationary multi-black lens solution with bi-axisymmetry of $U(1)\times U(1)$ as a supersymmetric solution in the five-dimensional minimal ungauged supergravity. We show that the spatial cross section of each degenerate Killing horizon admits different lens space topologies of $L(n,1)=S^3/{\mathbb Z_n}$ as well as a sphere $S^3$. Moreover, we show that in contrast to the higher dimensional Majumdar-Papapertrou multi-black hole and multi-BMPV black hole spacetimes, the metric is smooth on each horizon even if the horizon topology is spherical.
We derive the moduli space for the global symmetry in N=1 supersymmetric theories. We show, at the generic points, it coincides with the space of quasi-Nambu-Goldstone (QNG) bosons, which appear besides the ordinary Nambu-Goldstone (NG) bosons when global symmetry G breaks down spontaneously to its subgroup H with preserving N=1 supersymmetry. At the singular points, most of the NG bosons change to the QNG bosons and the unbroken global symmetry is enhanced. The G-orbits parametrized by the NG bosons are the fibre at the moduli space and the singular points correspond to the point where H-orbi…
In a recent letter, arXiv:1509.00021, it was shown that the lensing of light around rotating boson stars and Kerr black holes with scalar hair can exhibit chaotic patterns. Since no separation of variables is known (or expected) for geodesic motion on these backgrounds, we examine the 2D effective potentials for photon trajectories, to obtain a deeper understanding of this phenomenon. We find that the emergence of stable light rings on the background spacetimes, allows the formation of "pockets" in one of the effective potentials, for open sets of impact parameters, leading to an effective tra…
N=3 super-Schwarzian and N=(3,0) super-Liouville theories are formulated by the coadjoint orbit method. We study the coadjoint orbit dependence of the respective theories, represented by a superfield b. We show that it is renormalized into the N=3 super-Schwarzian derivative when the b field takes an appropriate configuration at the initial point of the orbit. Then the renormalized actions of the respective theories are invariant under OSp(2$|$3) transformations. If the configuration gets further specified, the initial point of the orbit turns out to be stable under one other kind of OSp(2$|$3…
We have developed N=1 supersymmetric nonlinear realization methods, which realize global symmetry breaking in N=1 supersymmetric theories. The target space of nonlinear sigma models with a linear model origin is a G^C-orbit, which is a non-compact non-homogeneous K"ahler manifold. We show that, if and only if the orbit is open, it includes a compact homogeneous K"ahler manifold as a submanifold, and a class of strictly G-invariant K"ahler potentials reduces to a K"ahler potential G-invariant up to a K"ahler transformation on the submanifold. Hence, in the case of an open orbit, the most genera…
We complete the classification of half-supersymmetric branes in toroidally compactified IIA/IIB string theory in terms of representations of the T-duality group. As a by-product we derive a last wrapping rule for the space-filling branes. We find examples of T-duality representations of branes in lower dimensions, suggested by supergravity, of which none of the component branes follow from the reduction of any brane in ten-dimensional IIA/IIB string theory. We discuss the constraints on the charges of half-supersymmetric branes, determining the corresponding T-duality and U-duality orbits.
We study the supersymmetric partition function on $S^1 \times L(r, 1)$, or the lens space index of four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal field theories and their connection to two-dimensional chiral algebras. We primarily focus on free theories as well as Argyres-Douglas theories of type $(A_1, A_k)$ and $(A_1, D_k)$. We observe that in specific limits, the lens space index is reproduced in terms of the (refined) character of an appropriately twisted module of the associated two-dimensional chiral algebra or a generalized vertex operator algebra. The particular twisted module is dete…
We present the gravity dual to a class of three-dimensional N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories on a biaxially squashed three-sphere, with a non-trivial background gauge field. This is described by a 1/2 BPS Euclidean solution of four-dimensional N=2 gauged supergravity, consisting of a Taub-NUT-AdS metric with a non-trivial instanton for the graviphoton field. The holographic free energy of this solution agrees precisely with the large N limit of the free energy obtained from the localized partition function of a class of Chern-Simons quiver gauge theories. We also discuss a different supersymm…
We study extremal cohomogeneity one five-dimensional asymptotically flat black holes of minimal supergravity in terms of the geodesics generated by nilpotent elements of the Lie algebra g2(2) on the coset manifold G2(2)/SO(2,2). There are two branches of regular extremal black holes with these properties: (i) the supersymmetric BMPV branch, and (ii) the non-supersymmetric extremal branch. We show that both of these branches are reproduced by nilpotent SO(2,2)-orbits. Furthermore, we show that the partial ordering of nilpotent orbits of G2(2) is in one-to-one correspondence with the phase diagr…
We study supersymmetric Wilson loop operators in four-dimensional N=4 super Yang-Mills theory. We show that the contour of a supersymmetric Wilson loop is either an orbit of some conformal transformation of the space-time (case I), or an arbitrary contour in the subspace where local superalgebra generator is a pure spinor (case II). In the more interesting case II we find and classify all pairs (Q,W) of the supercharges and the corresponding operators modulo the action of the global symmetry group.
An N=(4,0) supersymmetric Liouville theory is formulated by the coadjoint orbit method. It is discovered that the action has symmetry under PSU(1,1|2).
We study the partition function of the N=6 supersymmetric U(N_1)_k x U(N_2)_{-k} Chern-Simons-matter (CSM) theory, also known as the ABJ theory. For this purpose, we first compute the partition function of the U(N_1) x U(N_2) lens space matrix model exactly. The result can be expressed as a product of q-deformed Barnes G-function and a generalization of multiple q-hypergeometric function. The ABJ partition function is then obtained from the lens space partition function by analytically continuing N_2 to -N_2. The answer is given by min(N_1,N_2)-dimensional integrals and generalizes the "mirror…
In this review article we describe the localization of three dimensional N=2 supersymmetric theories on compact manifolds, including the squashed sphere, S^3_b, the lens space, S^3_b/Z_p, and S^2 x S^1. We describe how to write supersymmetric actions on these spaces, and then compute the partition functions and other supersymmetric observables by employing the localization argument. We briefly survey some applications of these computations.
