The Raman response in a superconductor is a powerful probe to investigate the symmetry of the superconducting gap. Here we show that in a multiband superconductor it also offers the unique opportunity to establish if the driving pairing interaction has an intraband or interband character. In the model with one hole and one electron band the full gauge-invariant Raman response, obtained by accounting for the fluctuations of both the density and superconducting phase degrees of freedom, is always dominated by the Leggett mode, regardless its nature. However, while in the case of intra-band dominated pairing the Josephson-like phase fluctuations of the two condensates identify a well-defined peak, as observed in MgB$_2$, for dominant interband pairing the Leggett resonance is pushed at twice the largest gap, resembling apparently a pair-breaking peak. The latter case is in very good agreement with experimental data in iron-based superconductors, suggesting that an interband pairing mechanism should be at play in these systems. These results have also interesting implications for the non-linear optical response probed by means of intense THz fields.
Using a two-orbital model of the superconducting phase of the pnictides, we compute the spectrum of the Leggett mode -- a collective excitation of the phase of the superconducting gap known to exist in multi-gap superconductors -- for different possible symmetries of the superconducting order parameter. Specifically, we identify the small regions of parameter space where the Leggett mode lies below the two-particle continuum, and hence should be visible as a sharp resonance peak. We discuss the possible utility of the Leggett mode in distinguishing different momentum dependencies of the superc…
In 1966 Leggett used a two-band superconductor to show that a new collective mode could exist at low temperatures, corresponding to a counter-flow of the superconducting condensates in each band. Here, the theory of electronic Raman scattering in a superconductor by Klein and Dierker (1984) is extended to a multiband superconductor. Raman scattering creates particle/hole pairs. In the relevant $A_{1g}$\ symmetry, the attraction that produces pairing necessarily couples excitations of superconducting pairs to these p/h excitations. In the Appendix it is shown that for zero wave vector transfer …
The modified procedure to get the effective action is discussed. Careful observation of phase of electrons leads to the conclusion that Hubbard-Stratonovich field should be pair wavefunction, instead of gap. The modified theory is valid for arbitrary strong interband coupling while the earlier approach only deals with weak interband coupling. This paper also discusses experimental observation of the Leggett mode: Raman spectroscopy. The spectral peak which corresponds to the Leggett mode is calculated in earlier the earlier and the modified theory, which shows that they are much different.
We report observation of Leggett's collective mode in a multi-band MgB2 superconductor with T_c=39K arising from the fluctuations in the relative phase between two superconducting condensates. The novel mode is observed by Raman spectroscopy at 9.4 meV in the fully symmetric scattering channel. The observed mode frequency is consistent with theoretical considerations based on the first principle computations.
Since their discovery, it has been suggested that pairing in pnictides can be mediated by spin fluctuations between hole and electron bands. In this view, multiband superconductivity would substantially differ from other systems like MgB2, where pairing is predominantly intraband. Indeed, interband-dominated pairing leads to the coexistence of bonding and antibonding superconducting channels. Here we show that this has profound consequences on the nature of the low-energy superconducting collective modes. In particular, the so-called Leggett mode for phase fluctuations is absent in the usual t…
We investigate non-resonant Raman response for iron-based superconductors using the framework of an effective S4 model that was recently proposed to capture the essential electronic and magnetic properties of Iron based superconductors. We compute the momentum matrix elements and the resulting Raman vertices exactly for different polarization geometries and amazingly find that a simple coskxcosky superconducting gap function is in good agreement with experimental data measured in both iron-pnictides and iron-chalcogenides. The Raman peaks are also matched quantitatively with the measured super…
Heavily electron-doped and single-layer FeSe superconduct at much higher temperatures than bulk FeSe. There have been a number of proposals attempting to explain the origin of the enhanced transition temperature, including the proximity to magnetic, nematic and antiferro-orbital critical points, as well as possible strong interfacial phonon coupling in the case of single-layer FeSe. In this paper, we examine the effect of the various mechanisms in an effective two-band model. Within our model, the fluctuations associated with these instabilities contribute to different parts of the effective m…
We performed model calculations of Raman responses for multiband 2D superconductors. The multiband effects of screening in the A_{1g} symmetry channel were investigated analytically and numerically for a band structure model mimicing ARPES data on iron-pnictide materials. An acceptable agreement between our model calculations and recent experimental data is demonstrated by modification of the band structure parameters.
The Leggett mode associated with out-of-phase oscillations of superconducting phase in multi-band superconductors usually is heavy due to the interband coupling, which makes its excitation and detection difficult. We report on the existence of a massless Leggett mode in three-band superconductors with time-reversal-symmetry-breaking (TRSB). The mass of the Leggett mode is small close to the TRSB transition and vanishes at the transition point, and thus locates within the smallest superconducting energy gap, which makes it stable and detectable. The mass of the Leggett mode can be measured by R…
We study Raman scattering in the superconducting state of alkali-intercalated iron selenide materials AxFe2-ySe2 (A=K,Rb,Cs) in which Fermi surface has only electron pockets. Theory predicts that both s-wave and d-wave pairing channels are attractive in this material, and the gap can have either s-wave or d-wave symmetry, depending on the system parameters. ARPES data favor $s-$wave superconductivity. We present the theory of Raman scattering in AxFe2-ySe2 assuming that the ground state has s-wave symmetry but $d-$ wave is a close second. We argue that Raman profile in d-wave B2g channel displ…
We report inelastic light scattering studies on Ca(Fe0.97Co0.03)2As2 in a wide spectral range of 120-5200 cm-1 from 5K to 300K, covering the tetragonal to orthorhombic structural transition as well as magnetic transition at Tsm ~ 160K. The mode frequencies of two first-order Raman modes B1g and Eg, both involving displacement of Fe atoms, show sharp increase below Tsm. Concomitantly, the linewidths of all the first-order Raman modes show anomalous broadening below Tsm, attributed to strong spin-phonon coupling. The high frequency modes observed between 400-1200 cm-1 are attributed to the elect…
We present Raman measurements on the iron-pnictide superconductors CeFeAsO_{1-x}F_{x} and NdFeAsO{1-x}F_{x}. Modeling the Fe-As plane in terms of harmonic and a cubic anharmonic Fe-As interaction we calculate the temperature dependence of the energy and lifetime of the Raman active Fe B_{1g} mode and fit to the observed energy shift. The shifts and lifetimes are in good agreement with those measured also in other Raman studies which demonstrate that the phonon spectrum is well represented by phonon-phonon interactions without any significant electronic contribution. We also estimate the anharm…

We theoretically study the macroscopic quantum tunneling (MQT) in a hetero Josephson junction formed by a conventional single-gap superconductor and a multi-gap one such as ${MgB}_{2}$ and iron-based superconductors. In such a Josephson junction more than one phase differences are defined. We clarify the quantum dynamics of the phase differences and construct a theory for the MQT in the multi-gap Josephson junctions. The dynamics of the phase differences are strongly affected by the Josephson-Leggett mode, which is the out-of-phase oscillation mode of the phase differences. The escape rate is …
Iron-based superconducting layered compounds have the second highest transition temperature after cuprate superconductors. Their discovery is a milestone in the history of high-temperature superconductivity and will have profound implications for high-temperature superconducting mechanism as well as industrial applications. Raman scattering has been extensively applied to correlated electron systems including the new superconductors due to its unique ability to probe multiple primary excitations and their coupling. In this review, we will give a brief summary of the existing Raman experiments …
We discuss how to analyze the optical conductivity and Raman spectra of multi-orbital systems using the velocity and the Raman vertices in a similar way Raman vertices were used to disentangle nodal and antinodal regions in cuprates. We apply this method to iron superconductors in the magnetic and non-magnetic states, studied at the mean field level. We find that the anisotropy in the optical conductivity at low frequencies reflects the difference between the magnetic gaps at the X and Y electron pockets. Both gaps are sampled by Raman spectroscopy. We also show that the Drude weight anisotrop…
We review the recent developments in electronic Raman scattering measurements of charge nematic fluctuations in iron-based superconductors. A simple theoretical framework of a $d$-wave Pomeranchuk transition is proposed in order to capture the salient features of the spectra. We discuss the available Raman data in the normal state of 122 iron-based systems, particularly Co doped BaFe$_2$As$_2$, and we show that the low energy quasi-elastic peak, the extracted nematic susceptibility and the scattering rates are consistent with an electronic driven structural phase transition. In the superconduc…
We have performed Raman-scattering measurements on high-quality single crystals of the superconductors K$_{0.8}$Fe$_{1.6}$Se$_2$ ($T_c$ = 32 K), Tl$_{0.5}$K$_{0.3}$Fe$_{1.6}$Se$_2$ ($T_c$ = 29 K), and Tl$_{0.5}$Rb$_{0.3}$Fe$_{1.6}$Se$_2$ ($T_c$ = 31 K), as well as of the insulating compound KFe$_{1.5}$Se$_2$. To interpret our results, we have made first-principles calculations for the phonon modes in the ordered iron-vacancy structure of K$_{0.8}$Fe$_{1.6}$Se$_2$. The modes we observe can be assigned very well from our symmetry analysis and calculations, allowing us to compare Raman-active pho…
We report Raman scattering measurement of charge nematic fluctuations in the tetragonal phase of BaFe$_2$As$_2$ and Sr(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ (x=0.04) single crystals. In both systems, the observed nematic fluctuations are found to exhibit divergent Curie-Weiss like behavior with very similar characteristic temperature scales, indicating a universal tendency towards charge nematic order in 122 iron-based superconductors.
We perform theoretical analysis of polarization-sensitive Raman spectroscopy on NaFe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$As, EuFe$2$As$_2$, SrFe$_2$As$_2$, and Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$, focusing on two features seen in the $B_{1g}$ symmetry channel (in one Fe unit cell notation): the strong temperature dependence of the static, uniform Raman response in the normal state and the existence of a collective mode in the superconducting state. We show that both features can be explained by the coupling of fermions to pairs of magnetic fluctuations via the Aslamazov-Larkin process. We first analyze magnetically-media…
An important issue in the study of the iron-arsenic based superconductors is the symmetry of the superconducting gap, a problem complicated by multiple gaps on different Fermi surface sheets. Electronic Raman scattering is a flexible bulk probe which allows one in principle to determine gap magnitudes and test for gap nodes in different regions of the Brillouin zone by employing different photon polarization states. Here we calculate the clean Raman intensity for $A_{1g}$, $B_{1g}$ and $B_{2g}$ polarizations, and discuss the peak structures and low-energy power laws which might be expected for…
Based on a two-band model, we study the electronic Raman scattering intensity in both normal and superconducting states of iron-pnictide superconductors. For the normal state, due to the match or mismatch of the symmetries between band hybridization and Raman vertex, it is predicted that overall $B_{1g}$ Raman intensity should be much weaker than that of the $B_{2g}$ channel. Moreover, in the non-resonant regime, there should exhibit a interband excitation peak at frequency $ω\simeq 7.3 t_1 (6.8t_1)$ in the $B_{1g}$ ($B_{2g}$) channel. For the superconducting state, it is shown that $β$-band c…
Although the parent iron-based pnictides and chalcogenides are itinerant antiferromagnets, the use of local moment picture to understand their magnetic properties is still widespread. We study magnetic Raman scattering from a local moment perspective for various quantum spin models proposed for this new class of superconductors. These models vary greatly in the level of magnetic frustration and show a vastly different two-magnon Raman response. Light scattering by two-magnon excitations thus provides a robust and independent measure of the underlying spin interactions. In accord with other rec…
Electronic Raman scattering studies on MgB2 single crystals as a function of excitation and polarization have revealed three distinct superconducting features: a clean gap below 37 cm-1 and two coherence peaks at 109 cm-1 and 78 cm-1 which we identify as the superconducting gaps in π- and σ-bands and as the Leggett's collective mode arising from the fluctuation in the relative phase between two superconducting condensates residing on corresponding bands. The temperature and field dependencies of the superconducting features have been established. A phononic Raman scattering study of the E2g bo…
Electronic Raman scattering measures a polarization-dependent scattering intensity which can provide information about the location of nodes in the energy gap of an unconventional superconductor as well as its overall symmetry. In this paper, we calculate the Raman intensity in the presence of disorder for several models of the iron pnictide superconducting state. We include, for completeness, $d$-wave and isotropic $s_\pm$ responses in addition to more realistic extended $s_\pm$ superconducting gaps. The effect of disorder is modeled using a self-consistent $T$-matrix approximation, and is st…
In a fully-gapped superconductor the electronic Raman response has a pair-breaking peak at twice the superconducting gap $Δ$, if the Bogoliubov excitations are uncorrelated. Motivated by the iron based superconductors, we study how this peak is modified if the superconducting phase hosts a nematic-structural quantum critical point. We show that, upon approaching this point by tuning, e.g., doping, the growth of nematic correlations between the quasiparticles transforms the pair-breaking peak into a nematic resonance. The mode energy is below 2$Δ$, and stays finite at the quantum critical point…
Quasiparticle excitations provide viable information on the physics of unconventional superconductors. Higgs and Leggett modes are some of the classic examples. Another important bosonic excitation is the spin exciton originating from the sign-changing superconducting gap structure. Here we report a direct observation of the temperature-dependent spin exciton in the Andreev spectra of iron-based superconductors. Combined with the other experimental evidence, our observation confirms the extended $s$-wave ($s_\pm$) order parameter symmetry and indirectly proves the spin-fluctuation mechanism of…
We have investigated the infrared and Raman optical properties of BaMn2As2 in the ab-plane and along the c-axis. The most prominent features in the infrared spectra are the Eu and A2u phonon modes which show clear TO-LO splitting from the energy loss function analysis. All the phonon features we observed in infrared and Raman spectra are consistent with the calculated values. Compared to the iron-pnictide analog AFe2As2, this compound is much more two-dimensional in its electronic properties. For E || c-axis, the overall infrared reflectivity is insulating like. Within the ab-plane the materia…
We report Raman light scattering in the phase separated superconducting single crystal Rb0.77Fe1.61Se2 with Tc = 32 K. The spectra have been measured in a wide temperature range 3K -500K. The observed phonon lines from the majority vacancy ordered Rb2Fe4Se5 (245) antiferromagnetic phase with TN= 525 K demonstrate modest anomalies in frequency, intensity and halfwidth at the superconductive phase transition. We identify phonon lines from the minority compressed RbδFe2Se2 (122) conductive phase. The superconducting gap with dx2-y2 symmetry is also detected in our spectra. In the range 0-600 cm-1…
Raman spectroscopy of a cobalt-doped iron-pnictide superconductor reveals the complex electronic structure of the superconducting state in this material. [Viewpoint on Phys. Rev. B 80, 180510 (2009), arXiv:0910.0898]
We show that electronic Raman scattering affords a window into the essential properties of the pairing potential $V_{\mathbf{k},\mathbf{k^{\prime}}}$ of iron-based superconductors. In Ba$_{0.6}$K$_{0.4}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ we observe band dependent energy gaps along with excitonic Bardasis-Schrieffer modes characterizing, respectively, the dominant and subdominant pairing channel. The $d_{x^2-y^2}$ symmetry of all excitons allows us to identify the subdominant channel to originate from the interaction between the electron bands. Consequently, the dominant channel driving superconductivity results fro…
Electron-phonon coupling (EPC) is one of the most common and fundamental interactions in solids. It not only dominates many basic dynamic processes like resistivity, thermal conductivity etc, but also provides the pairing glue in conventional superconductors. But in high-temperature superconductors (HTSC), it is still controversial whether or not EPC is in favor of paring. Despite the controversies, many experiments have provided clear evidence for EPC in HTSC. In this paper, we briefly review EPC in cuprate and iron-based superconducting systems revealed by Raman scattering. We introduce how …
Motivated by the fully gapped superconductivity in iron-based superconductors with uncompensated electron pockets, we propose a spin singlet, but orbital triplet analogue of the superfluid phase of He-3B. We show that orbital triplets with a nominal d-wave symmetry at the iron sites can transform as s-wave pairs under rotations about the selenium sites. Linear combinations of such d$_{xy}$ and d$_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$ triplets form a fully gapped, topological superconductor. Raman-active excitations are predicted to develop below the superconducting transition temperature.
Raman spectra have been measured on iron-based quaternary CeO$_{1-x}$F$_x$FeAs and LaO$_{1-x}$F$_x$FeAs with varying fluorine doping at room temperatures. A group analysis has been made to clarify the optical modes. Based on the first principle calculations, the observed phonon modes can be assigned accordingly. In LaO$_{1-x}$F$_x$FeAs, the E$_g$ and A$_{1g}$ modes related to the vibrations of La, are suppressed with increasing F doping. However F doping only has a small effect on the E$_g$ and A$_{1g}$ modes of Fe and As. The Raman modes of La and As are absent in rare-earth substituted CeO$_…
We report plane-polarized Raman scattering spectra of iron oxypnictide superconductor NdFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ single crystals with varying fluorine $x$ content. The spectra exhibit sharp and symmetrical phonon lines with a weak dependence on fluorine doping $x$. The temperature dependence does not show any phonon anomaly at the superconducting transition. The Fe related phonon intensity shows a strong resonant enhancement below 2 eV. We associate the resonant enhancement to the presence of an interband transition around 2 eV observed in optical conductivity. Our results point to a rather weak cou…
Polarized Raman scattering spectra of superconducting K$_x$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_2$ and nonsuperconducting K$_{0.8}$Fe$_{1.8}$Co$_{0.2}$Se$_2$ single crystals were measured in a temperature range from 10 K up to 300 K. Two Raman active modes from the $I4/mmm$ phase and seven from the $I4/m$ phase are observed in frequency range from 150 to 325 cm$^{-1}$ in both compounds, suggesting that K$_{0.8}$Fe$_{1.8}$Co$_{0.2}$Se$_2$ single crystal also has two-phase nature. Temperature dependence of Raman mode energy is analyzed in terms of lattice thermal expansion and phonon-phonon interaction. Temperature de…
We present a dynamical theory for the phase differences along a stacked direction of intrinsic Josephson junctions (IJJ's) in layered multigap superconductors, motivated by the discovery of highly-anisotropic iron-based superconductors with thick perovskite-type blocking layers. The dynamical equations describing AC and DC intrinsic Josephson effects peculiar to multigap IJJ's are derived, and collective Leggett mode excitations in addition to the Josephson plasma established in single-gap IJJ's are predicted. The dispersion relations of their collective modes are explicitly displayed, and the…
We report Raman scattering spectra of iron-pnictide superconductor Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ single crystals with varying cobalt $x$ content. Upon cooling through the tetragonal-to-orthorhombic transition, we observe a large splitting of the E$_g$ in-plane phonon modes involving Fe and As displacements. The splitting of the in-plane phonons at the transition is strongly reduced upon doping and disappears for $x=0.06$ qualitatively following the trend displayed by the Fe magnetic moment. The origin of the splitting is discussed in terms of magnetic frustration inherent to iron-pnictide sys…
Resolving the microscopic pairing mechanism and its experimental identification in unconventional superconductors is among the most vexing problems of contemporary condensed matter physics. We show that Raman spectroscopy provides an avenue for this quest by probing the structure of the pairing interaction at play in an unconventional superconductor. As we study the spectra of the prototypical Fe-based superconductor ${\rm Ba_{1-x}K_xFe_2As_2}$ for $0.22\le x \le 0.70$ in all symmetry channels, Raman spectroscopy allows us to distill the leading $s$-wave state. In addition, the spectra collect…
Multiband superconductors can host collective excitations with marked differences with respect to their single-band counterpart. We first study the spectrum of collective amplitude fluctuations in a clean two-bands superconductor, showing that the spectral weight of the Higgs mode rapidly deviates from the naive extension of the single band case as the interband coupling is turned on. These results are then used to critically analyze the non-linear optical response in MgB$_2$, providing an explanation for the apparently contradictory results of recent experiments, pointing towards a selective …
We present details of carrier properties in high quality ${\rm Ba(Fe_{1-x}Co_{x})_2As_2}$ single crystals obtained from electronic Raman scattering. The experiments indicate a strong band and momentum anisotropy of the electron dynamics above and below the superconducting transition highlighting the importance of complex band-dependent interactions. The presence of low energy spectral weight deep in the superconducting state suggests a gap with accidental nodes which may be lifted by doping and/or impurity scattering. When combined with other measurements, our observation of band and momentum …
Vibrational properties of iron-chalcogenide superconductor K$_{0.75}$Fe$_{1.75}$Se$_{2}$ with $T_{c}\sim$ 30 K have been measured by Raman and optical spectroscopies over temperature range of 3-300 K. Sample undergoes \textit{I4/m} $\to $ \textit{I4} structural phase transition accompanied by loss of inversion symmetry at $T_{1}$, below 250 K, observed as appearance of new fully-symmetric Raman mode at $\sim$ 165 cm$^{-1}$. Small vibration mode anomalies are also observed at $T_{2}\sim$ 160 K. From first-principles vibrational analysis of antiferromagnetic K$_{0.8}$Fe$_{1.6}$Se$_{2}$ utilizing…
We review our recent experimental results on the electronic nematic phase in electron- and hole-doped BaFe$_2$As$_2$ and FeSe. The nematic susceptibility is extracted from shear-modulus data (obtained using a three-point-bending method in a capacitance dilatometer) using Landau theory and is compared to the nematic susceptibility obtained from elastoresistivity and Raman data. FeSe is particularly interesting in this context, because of a large nematic, i.e., a structurally distorted but paramagnetic, region in its phase diagram. Scaling of the nematic susceptibility with the spin lattice rela…
The multiband nature of iron pnictides gives rise to a rich temperature-doping phase diagram of competing orders and a plethora of collective phenomena. At low dopings, the tetragonal-to-orthorhombic structural transition is closely followed by a spin density wave transition both being in close proximity to the superconducting phase. A key question is the nature of high-$T_c$ superconductivity and its relation to orbital ordering and magnetism. Here we study the NaFe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$As superconductor using polarization-resolved Raman spectroscopy. The Raman susceptibility displays critical enha…
Charge, spin and lattice degrees of freedom are strongly entangled in iron superconductors. A neat consequence of this entanglement is the behavior of the A_{1g} As-phonon resonance in the different polarization symmetries of Raman spectroscopy when undergoing the magneto-structural transition. In this work we show that the observed behavior could be a direct consequence of the coupling of the phonons with the electronic excitations in the anisotropic magnetic state. We discuss this scenario within a five orbital tight-binding model coupled to phonons via the dependence of the Slater-Koster pa…
We use polarization-resolved Raman spectroscopy to study the anisotropy of the electronic characteristics of the iron-pnictide parent compounds $A$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ ($A$~=~Eu, Sr). We demonstrate that above the structural phase transition at Ts the dynamical anisotropic properties of the 122 compounds are governed by the emergence of $xy$-symmetry critical collective mode foretelling a condensation into a state with spontaneously broken four-fold symmetry at a temperature $T^{*}$. However, the mode's critical slowing down is intervened by a structural transition at Ts, about 80~K above $T^{*}$,…
The superconducting critical temperature $T_{\mathrm{c}}$ of intercalated iron-selenide superconductor (Li,Fe)OHFeSe (FeSe11111) can be increased to 42 K from 8 K of bulk FeSe. It shows remarkably similar electronic properties as the high-$T_{\mathrm{c}}$ monolayer FeSe and provides a bulk counterpart to investigate the origin of enhanced superconductivity. Unraveling the nature of excitations is crucial for understanding the pairing mechanism in high-$T_{\mathrm{c}}$ iron selenides. Here we use resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) to investigate the excitations in FeSe11111. Our high-qu…
We show that the fluctuations associated with ferro orbital order in the $d_{xz}$ and $d_{yz}$ orbitals can develop a sharp resonance mode in the superconducting state with a nodeless gap on the Fermi surface. This orbital resonance mode appears below the particle-hole continuum and is analogous to the magnetic resonance mode found in various unconventional superconductors. If the pairing symmetry is $s_{\pm}$, a dynamical coupling between the orbital ordering and the d-wave subdominant pairing channels is present by symmetry. Therefore the nature of the resonance mode depends on the relative …
This article reviews theoretical and experimental work on the novel physics in multiband superconductors. Multiband superconductors are characterized by multiple superconducting energy gaps in different bands with interaction between Cooper pairs in these bands. The discovery of prominent multiband superconductors $\mathrm{MgB_2}$ and later iron-based superconductors has triggered enormous interests in multiband superconductors. Most recently discovered superconductors exhibit multiband features. The multiband superconductors possess novel properties that are not shared by their single-band co…
The recently discovered layered BiS2-based superconductors have attracted a great deal of interest due to their structural similarity to cuprate and iron-pnictide superconductors. We have performed Raman scattering measurements on two superconducting crystals NdO0.5F0.5BiS2 (Tc = 4.5 K) and NdO0.7F0.3BiS2 (Tc = 4.8 K). The observed Raman phonon modes are assigned with the aid of first-principles calculations. The asymmetrical phonon mode around 118 cm-1 reveals a small electron-phonon (e-ph) coupling constant 0.16, which is insufficient to generate superconductivity at ~ 4.5 K. In the Raman sp…
Raman spectroscopy is a very powerful probe to study the nature of quasi-particle excitations in condensed matter physics. The work presented in this thesis is focused on two different families of novel materials, namely the iron-based superconductors (FeBS), multiferroic oxides and double perovskite. Although the properties of these two systems are quite different, some comparison can still be drawn between them. For instance, in both of these systems magnetism plays a crucial role and intricate coupling between phononic, magnetic and orbital degrees of freedom is crucial to understand their …
We investigate the competition between the extended $s_{\pm}$-wave and $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave pairing order parameters in the iron-based superconductors. Because of the frustrating pairing interactions among the electron and the hole fermi pockets, a time reversal symmetry breaking $s+id$ pairing state could be favored. We analyze this pairing state within the Ginzburg-Landau theory, and explore the experimental consequences. In such a state, spatial inhomogeneity induces supercurrent near a non-magnetic impurity and the corners of a square sample. The resonance mode between the $s_{\pm}$ and $d_{…
We obtain the exact low-energy spectrum of two mobile holes in a t-J model for an isolated layer in an iron-pnictide superconductor. The minimum d xz and d yz orbitals per iron atom are included, with no hybridization between the two. After tuning the Hund coupling to a putative quantum critical point (QCP) that separates a commensurate spin-density wave from a hidden-order antiferromagnet at half filling, we find an s-wave hole-pair groundstate and a d-wave hole-pair excited state. Near the QCP, both alternate in sign between hole Fermi surface pockets at the Brillouin zone center and emergen…
Polarized Raman-scattering spectra of superconducting, single-crystalline FeSe evidence pronounced phonon anomalies with temperature reduction. A large 6.5% hardening of the B_1g(Fe) phonon mode is attributed to the suppression of local fluctuations of the iron spin state with the gradual decrease of the iron paramagnetic moment. The ab-initio lattice dynamic calculations support this conclusion. The enhancement of the low-frequency spectral weight above the structural phase transition temperature T_s and its change below T_s is discussed in relation with the opening of an energy gap between l…
Thermal conductivity, point contact spectroscopy, angle-resolved photoemission and Raman spectroscopy measurements were performed on BaFe1.9Pt0.1As2 single crystals obtained from the same synthesis batch in order to investigate the superconducting energy gap structure using multiple techniques. Low temperature thermal conductivity was measured in the superconducting state as a function of temperature and magnetic field, revealing an absence of quasiparticle excitations in the T=0 limit up to 15 T applied magnetic fields. Point-contact Andreev reflection spectroscopy measurements were performed…
