Motivated by the fully gapped superconductivity in iron-based superconductors with uncompensated electron pockets, we propose a spin singlet, but orbital triplet analogue of the superfluid phase of He-3B. We show that orbital triplets with a nominal d-wave symmetry at the iron sites can transform as s-wave pairs under rotations about the selenium sites. Linear combinations of such d$_{xy}$ and d$_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$ triplets form a fully gapped, topological superconductor. Raman-active excitations are predicted to develop below the superconducting transition temperature.
Noncentrosymmetric superconductors can lead to a variety of exotic properties in the superconducting state such as line nodes, multigap behavior, and time-reversal symmetry breaking. In this paper, we report the properties of the new noncentrosymmetric superconductor TaOs, using muon spin relaxation and rotation measurements. It is shown using the zero-field muon experiment that TaOs preserve the time-reversal symmetry in the superconducting state. From the transverse field muon measurements, we extract the temperature dependence of $λ(T)$ which is proportional to the superfluid density. This …
We investigate the neutron scattering spectrum in iron pnictides based on the random-phase approximation in the five-orbital model with a realistic superconducting (SC) gap, Delta=5meV. In the normal state, the neutron spectrum is suppressed by large inelastic quasi-particle (QP) scattering rate gamma* ~ Delta. In the fully-gapped s-wave state without sign reversal (s++), a hump-shaped enhancement appears in the neutron spectrum just above 2Delta, since the inelastic QP scattering is prohibited by the SC gap. That is, the hump structure is produced by the dissipationless QPs for Ek<3Delta. The…
In superconductors with unconventional pairing mechanisms, the energy gap in the excitation spectrum often has nodes, which allow quasiparticle excitations at low energies. In many cases, e.g. $d$-wave cuprate superconductors, the position and topology of nodes are imposed by the symmetry, and thus the presence of gapless excitations is protected against disorder. Here we report on the observation of distinct changes in the gap structure of iron-pnictide superconductors with increasing impurity scattering. By the successive introduction of nonmagnetic point defects into BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x…
Spin fluctuations are considered to be one of the candidates that drive a sign-reversed s^{\pm} superconducting state in the iron pnictides. In the magnetic scenario, whether the spin fluctuation spectrum exhibits certain unique fine structures is an interesting aspect for theoretical study in order to understand experimental observations. We investigate the detailed momentum dependence of the short-range spin fluctuations using a 2-orbital model in the self-consistent fluctuation exchange approximation and find that a common feature of those fluctuations that are capable of inducing a fully g…
We have successfully synthesized the fluo-arsenide SrFeAsF, a new parent phase with the ZrCuAsSi structure. The temperature dependence of resistivity and dc magnetization both reveal an anomaly at about T_{an} = 173 K, which may correspond to the structural and/or Spin-Density-Wave (SDW) transition. Strong Hall effect and magnetoresistance were observed below T_{an}. Interestingly, the Hall coefficient R_H is positive below T_{an}, which is opposite to the cases in the two parent phases of FeAs-based systems known so far, i.e., LnFeAsO (Ln = rare earth elements) and (Ba, Sr)Fe_2As_2 where the …
An iron-based superconductor LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$H$_x$ (0 $\leq x \leq$ 0.6) undergoes two antiferromagnetic (AF) phases upon H doping. We investigated the second AF phase ($x$=0.6) using NMR techniques under pressure. At pressures up to 2 GPa, the ground state is a spin-density-wave state with a large gap; however, the gap closes at 4.0 GPa, suggesting a pressure-induced quantum critical point. Interestingly, the gapped excitation coexists with gapless magnetic fluctuations at pressures between 2 and 4 GPa. This coexistence is attributable to the lift up of the $d_{xy}$ orbital to the Fermi level,…
We calculated the critical temperature in the framework of s+-+d-wave multiband Eliashberg theory. We have solved these equations numerically to see at what values of the input parameters there is a solution with a non-zero critical temperature and what is the symmetry of the order parameter of this solution. For our model we consider the pnictide case with simplifications that allow us to obtain the most general possible information. For selected and representative cases in which the order parameter has s+-+d symmetry, we calculated the superconducting density of states, the temperature depen…
The symmetries of superconducting gap functions remain an important question of iron-based superconductivity. Motivated by the recent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopic measurements on iron-chalcogenide superconductors, we investigate the influence of pairing symmetries on the topological surface state. If the surface Dirac cone becomes gapped in the superconducting phase, it implies magnetization induced from time-reversal symmetry breaking pairing via spin-orbit coupling. Based on the crystalline symmetry constraints on the Ginzburg-Landau free energy, the gap function symmetries are…
We study whether Fermi-surface (FS) nesting can give rise to high-temperature superconductivity in iron pnictides. Starting with ab initio construction of an effective four-orbital model, we employ the fluctuation-exchange approximation to show that FS does not necessarily favor the stripe antiferromagnetic order observed in experiments, especially for realistic electronic correlations. If superconductivity in iron pnictides is magnetically mediated and has fully-gapped sign-reversing s-wave symmetry, our results suggest that the pairing interaction does not arise only from FS nesting and exch…
Based on the five-orbital model, we study the effect of local impurity in iron pnictides, and find that the interband impurity scattering is promoted by the d-orbital degree of freedom. This fact means that the fully-gapped sign-reversing s-wave state, which is predicted by spin fluctuation theories, is very fragile against impurities. In the BCS theory, only 1% impurities with intermediate strength induce huge pair-breaking, resulting in the large in-gap state and prominent reduction in Tc, contrary to the prediction based on simple orbital-less models. The present study provides a stringent …
We determine the anisotropy of the spin fluctuation induced pairing gap on the Fermi surface of the FeAs based superconductors as function of the exchange and Hund's coupling $J_{H}$. We find that for sufficiently large $J_{H}$, nearly commensurate magnetic fluctuations yield a fully gapped $s^{\pm}$-pairing state with small anisotropy of the gap amplitude on each Fermi surface sheet, but significant variations of the gap amplitude for different sheets of the Fermi surface. In particular, we obtain the large variation of the gap amplitude on different Fermi surface sheets, as seen in ARPES exp…
Understanding the formation of Cooper pairs in iron-based superconductors is one of the most important topics in condensed matter physics. In conventional superconductors, the electron-phonon interaction leads to the formation of Cooper pairs. In conventional strong-coupling superconductors like lead (Pb), the features due to electron-phonon interaction are evident in the infrared absorption spectra. Here we investigate the infrared absorption spectra of the iron arsenide superconductor BaFe1.9Pt0.1As2. We find that this superconductor has fully gapped (nodeless) Fermi surfaces, and we observe…
The superconducting series, Fe(Te,Se), has a complex structural and magnetic phase diagram that is dependent on composition and occupancy of a secondary interstitial Fe site. In this letter, we show that superconductivity in Fe1+xTe0.7Se0.3 can be enhanced by topotactic deintercalation of the interstitial iron, demonstrating the competing roles of the two iron sites. Neutron diffraction reveals a flattening of the Fe(Te,Se)4 tetrahedron on Fe removal of iron and an increase in negative thermal expansion within the ab plane that correlates with increased lattice strain. Inelastic neutron scatte…
We investigate the pairing in iron pnictides in the coexistence phase, which displays both superconducting and antiferromagnetic orders. By solving the pairing problem on the Fermi surface reconstructed by long-range magnetic order, we find that the pairing interaction necessarily becomes angle-dependent, even if it was isotropic in the paramagnetic phase, which results in an angular variation of the superconducting gap along the Fermi surfaces. We find that the gap has no nodes for a small antiferromagnetic order parameter M, but may develop accidental nodes for intermediate values of M, when…
In a fully-gapped superconductor the electronic Raman response has a pair-breaking peak at twice the superconducting gap $Δ$, if the Bogoliubov excitations are uncorrelated. Motivated by the iron based superconductors, we study how this peak is modified if the superconducting phase hosts a nematic-structural quantum critical point. We show that, upon approaching this point by tuning, e.g., doping, the growth of nematic correlations between the quasiparticles transforms the pair-breaking peak into a nematic resonance. The mode energy is below 2$Δ$, and stays finite at the quantum critical point…
We study the neutron scattering spectrum in iron pnictides based on the random-phase approximation in the five-orbital model, for fully-gapped s-wave states with sign reversal (s+-) and without sign reversal (s++). In the s++ wave state, we find that a prominent hump structure appears just above the spectral gap, by taking account of the quasiparticle damping gamma due to strong electron-electron correlation: As the superconductivity develops, the reduction in gamma gives rise to the large overshoot in the spectrum above the gap. The obtained hump structure looks similar to the resonance peak …
Measurements of London penetration depth are a sensitive tool to study multi-band superconductivity and it has provided several important insights to the behavior of Fe-based superconductors. We first briefly review the "experimentalist - friendly" self-consistent Eilenberger model that relates the measurable superfluid density and structure of superconducting gaps. Then we focus on the \BaFe -derived materials, for which the results are consistent with 1) two distinct superconducting gaps; 2) development of strong in-plane gap anisotropy with the departure from the optimal doping; 3) appearan…
An important challenge in condensed matter physics is understanding iron-based superconductors. Among these systems, the iron selenides hold the record for highest superconducting transition temperature and pose especially striking puzzles regarding the nature of superconductivity. The pairing state of the alkaline iron selenides appears to be of $d$-wave type based on the observation of a resonance mode in neutron scattering, while it seems to be of $s$-wave type from the nodeless gaps observed everywhere on the Fermi surface (FS). Here we propose an orbital-selective pairing state, dubbed $s…
We report low-temperature thermal conductivity down to 40 mK of the antiferromagnet BaFe$_2$As$_{2}$, which is the parent compound of recently discovered iron-based superconductors. In the investigated temperature range below 4 K, the thermal conductivity $κ$ is well described by the expression $κ$ = $aT$ + $bT^{2.22}$. We attribute the ``$aT$''-term to an electronic contribution which is found to satisfy the Wiedemann-Franz law in the $T$ $\to$ 0 K limit, and the remaining thermal conductivity, $\sim$ $T^{2.22}$, is attributed to phonon conductivity. A small influence on thermal conductivity …
Multiband superconductivity, involving resonant pair scattering between different bands, has emerged as a possible explanation of some of the main characteristics of the recently discovered iron pnictides. A key feature of such interband pairing mechanism is that it can generate or enhance superconducting pairing irrespective of whether it is attractive or repulsive. The latter case typically leads to the superconducting gap switching its sign among different sections of the Fermi surface. In iron pnictides, the natural scenario is that the gap changes sign between the hole and the electron Fe…
A key question in high temperature iron-based superconductivity is the mechanism by which the paired electrons minimize their strong mutual Coulomb repulsion. While electronically paired superconductors generally avoid the Coulomb interaction through the formation of nodal, higher angular momentum pairs, iron based superconductors appear to form singlet s-wave (s$^{\pm}$) pairs. By taking the orbital degrees of freedom of the iron atoms into account, here we argue that the s$^{\pm}$ state in these materials possesses internal d-wave structure, in which a relative d-wave ($L=2$) motion of the p…
Monolayer FeSe exhibits the highest transition temperature among the iron based superconductors and appears to be fully gapped, seemingly consistent with $s$-wave superconductivity. Here, we develop a theory for the superconductivity based on coupling to fluctuations of checkerboard magnetic order (which has the same translation symmetry as the lattice). The electronic states are described by a symmetry based ${\bf k}\cdot {\bf p}$-like theory and naturally account for the states observed by angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We show that a prediction of this theory is that the resulta…
We study the effect of the lattice structure on the spin-fluctuation mediated superconductivity in the iron pnictides adopting the five-band models of several virtual lattice structures of LaFeAsO as well as actual materials such as NdFeAsO and LaFePO obtained from the maximally-localized Wannier orbitals. Random phase approximation is applied to the models to solve the Eliashberg equation. This reveals that the gap function and the strength of the superconducting instability are determined by the cooperation or competition among multiple spin fluctuation modes arising from several nestings am…
The sign-reversing fully gapped superconducting state, which is expected to be realized in oxypnictide superconductors, can be prominently affected by nonmagnetic impurities due to the interband scattering of Cooper pairs. We study this problem based on the isotropic two-band BCS model: In oxypnictide superconductors, the interband impurity scattering $I'$ is not equal to the intraband one $I$. In the Born scattering regime, the reduction in Tc is sizable and the impurity-induced density of states (DOS) is prominent if $I\sim I'$, due to the interband scattering. Although impurity-induced DOS …
We perform scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy study on the layered iron based superconductor KCa$_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$F$_2$ with a critical temperature of about 33.5 K. Two types of terminated surfaces are generally observed after cleaving the samples in vacuum. On one commonly obtained surface, we observe a full gap feature with energy gap values close to 4.6 meV. This type of spectrum shows a clean and uniform full gap in space, which indicates the absence of gap nodes in this superconductor. Quasiparticle interference patterns have also been measured, which show no scattering patterns bet…
Motivated by recent experimental reports of significant spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and a sign-changing order-parameter in the Li$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$(OHFe)$_{1-y}$Zn$_y$Se superconductor with only electron pockets present, we study the possible Cooper-pairing symmetries and their quasiparticle interference (QPI) signatures. We find that each of the resulting states - $s$-wave, $d$-wave and helical $p$-wave - can have a fully gapped density of states (DOS) consistent with angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) experiments and, due to spin-orbit coupling, are a mixture of spin singlet and tri…
In several iron-arsenide superconductors there is strong evidence for a fully gapped superconducting state consistent with either a conventional s-wave symmetry or an unusual $s_\pm$ state where there the gap changes sign between the electron and hole Fermi surface sheets. Here we report measurements of the penetration depth $λ(T)$ in very clean samples of the related iron-phosphide superconductor, LaFePO, at temperatures down to $\sim$ 100 mK. We find that $λ(T)$ varies almost perfectly linearly with $T$ strongly suggesting the presence of gap nodes in this compound. Taken together with other…
The experimental consequences of different order parameters in iron-based superconductors are theoretically analyzed. We consider both nodeless and nodal order parameters, with an emphasis on the $\cos(k_x)\cdot \cos(k_y)$ nodeless order parameter recently derived by two of us. We analyze the effect of this order parameter on the spectral function, density of states, tunneling differential conductance, penetration depth, and the NMR spin relaxation time. This extended s-wave symmetry has line-zeroes in between the electron and hole pockets, but they do not intersect the two Fermi surfaces for …
A central idea in strongly correlated systems is that doping a Mott insulator leads to a superconductor by transforming the resonating valence bonds (RVBs) into spin-singlet Cooper pairs. Here, we argue that a spin-triplet RVB (tRVB) state, driven by spatially, or orbitally anisotropic ferromagnetic interactions can provide the parent state for triplet superconductivity. We apply this idea to the iron-based superconductors, arguing that strong onsite Hund's interactions develop intra-atomic tRVBs between the t$_{2g}$ orbitals. On doping, the presence of two iron atoms per unit cell allows thes…
A major puzzle about the nature of the iron-based superconductivity appears in the case of the alkaline iron selenides. Compared to the iron pnictides, these systems have only electron Fermi pockets (i.e. no hole Fermi pockets) but comparable superconducting transition temperatures. The challenge lies in reconciling the two basic experimental features of their superconducting state: a node-less gap and the existence of a resonance in the spin excitation spectrum. We propose a mechanism based on reconstructing two quasi-degenerate pairing states, one in an $s$-wave $A_{1g}$ channel that is full…
We reiterate, in more details, our previous proposal of using quasi-particle interference to determine the pairing form factor in iron-based superconductors. We also present our functional renormalization group(FRG) results on LaFePO and Fe(Se,Te) superconductors. In particular we found that the leading pairing channel in LaFePO is nodal s$_{\pm}$, with nodes on electron Fermi surfaces. For Fe(Se,Te) system we found fully gapped s$_{\pm}$ pairing, with substantial gap anisotropy on electron Fermi surfaces, and large gap is concentrated in regions with dominant $xy$ orbital character. We furthe…
The phase diagram of the high-Tc cuprates is dominated by the Mott insulating phase of the parent compounds. As we approach it from large doping, a standard Fermi-liquid gradually turns into a bad non-Fermi liquid metal, a process which culminates in the pseudogap regime, in which the antinodal region in momentum space acquires a gap before reaching a fully gapped Mott state. Here we show that experiments for electron- and hole-doped BaFe2As2 support an analogous scenario. The doping evolution is dominated by the influence of a Mott insulator that would be realized for half-filled conduction b…
We analyze the metallic (pi,0) antiferromagnetic state of a five-orbital model for iron superconductors. We find that with increasing interactions the system does not evolve trivially from the pure itinerant to the pure localized regime. Instead we find a region with a strong orbital differentiation between xy and yz, which are half-filled gapped states at the Fermi level, and itinerant zx, 3z^2-r^2 and x^2-y^2. We argue that orbital ordering between yz and zx orbitals arises as a consequence of the interplay of the exchange energy in the antiferromagnetic x direction and the kinetic energy ga…
The theoretical need to study the properties of the Fe-based high-T_c superconductors with reliable many-body techniques requires us to determine the minimum number of orbital degrees of freedom that will capture the physics of these materials. While the shape of the Fermi surface (FS) obtained with the local density approximation (LDA) can be reproduced by a two-orbital model, it has been argued that the bands that cross the chemical potential result from the strong hybridization of three of the Fe 3d orbitals. For this reason, a three-orbital Hamiltonian obtained with the Slater-Koster forma…
The pairing mechanism in iron-based superconductors is believed to be unconventional, i.e. not phonon-mediated. The achieved transition temperatures Tc in these superconductors are still significantly below those of some of the cuprates, with the exception of single layer FeSe films on SrTiO3 showing a Tc between 60 and 100 K, i.e. an order of magnitude larger than in bulk FeSe. This enormous increase of Tc demonstrates the potential of interface engineering for superconductivity, yet the underlying mechanism of Cooper pairing is not understood. Both conventional and unconventional mechanisms …
We present a general theory of multiorbital spin waves in magnetically ordered metallic systems. Motivated by the itinerant magnetism of iron-based superconductors, we compare the magnetic excitations for two different scenarios: when the magnetic order either sets in on the on-site orbital level; or when it appears as an electron-hole pairing between different bands of electron and hole character. As an example we treat the two-orbital model for iron-based superconductors. For small magnetic moments the spin excitations look similar in both scenarios. Going to larger interactions and larger m…
Experiments on the iron-pnictide superconductors appear to show some materials where the ground state is fully gapped, and others where low-energy excitations dominate, possibly indicative of gap nodes. Within the framework of a 5-orbital spin fluctuation theory for these systems, we discuss how changes in the doping, the electronic structure or interaction parameters can tune the system from a fully gapped to nodal sign-changing gap with s-wave ($A_{1g}$) symmetry ($s^\pm$). In particular we focus on the role of the hole pocket at the $(π,π)$ point of the unfolded Brillouin zone identified as…
We have studied the in- and out-of-plane magnetic penetration depths in the hole- doped iron based superconductor Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ ($T_{c}\approx$ 30K). The study was performed on single crystals grown from different fluxes and we find that the results are nearly the same. The in-plane London penetration depth $λ_{ab}$ does not show exponential saturation at low temperature, as would be expected from a fully gapped superconductor. Instead, $λ_{ab}(T)$ shows a power-law behavior, $λ\propto T^{n}$ ($n\approx 2$), down to $T\approx 0.02 T_{c}$, similar to the electron doped Ba(Fe…
Although the origin of high temperature superconductivity in the iron pnictides is still under debate, it is widely believed that magnetic interactions or fluctuations play an important role in triggering Cooper pairing. Because of the relevance of magnetism to pairing, the question of whether long range spin magnetic order can coexist with superconductivity microscopically has attracted strong interests. The available experimental methods used to answer this question are either bulk probes or local ones without control of probing position, thus the answers range from mutual exclusion to homog…
