We experimentally realize indirect coupling between two cavity modes via strong coupling with the ferromagnetic resonance in Yttrium Iron Garnet (YIG). We find that some indirectly coupled modes of our system can have a higher microwave transmission than the individual uncoupled modes. Using a coupled harmonic oscillator model, the influence of the oscillation phase difference between the two cavity modes on the nature of the indirect coupling is revealed. These indirectly coupled microwave modes can be controlled using an external magnetic field or by tuning the cavity height. This work has potential for use in controllable optical devices and information processing technologies.
We investigate long-range coherent and dissipative coupling between two spatially separated magnets while both are coupled to a microwave cavity. A careful examination of the system shows that the indirect interaction between two magnon modes is dependent on their individual mechanisms of direct coupling to the cavity. If both magnon modes share the same form of coupling to the cavity (either coherent or dissipative), then the indirect coupling between them will produce level repulsion. Conversely, if the magnon modes have different forms of coupling to the cavity (one coherent and one dissipa…
We present a scheme to entangle the vibrational phonon modes of two massive ferromagnetic spheres in a dual-cavity magnomechanical system. In each cavity, a microwave cavity mode couples to a magnon mode (spin wave) via the magnetic dipole interaction, and the latter further couples to a deformation phonon mode of the ferromagnetic sphere via a nonlinear magnetostrictive interaction. We show that by directly driving the magnon mode with a red-detuned microwave field to activate the magnomechanical anti-Stokes process a cavity-magnon-phonon state-swap interaction can be realized. Therefore, if …
We develop a theory of the reversible switching of the magnetic state of the ferromagnet-insulator-normal metalferromagnet (FINF) nanostructure. The switching is controlled by tuning the Coulomb blockade strength via the gate voltage on the normal metal granule. The proposed mechanism allows for realizing the switching without passing a dissipative current through the structure.
We investigate the magnon-photon couplings by employing a small magnet within an irregular resonant cavity, which leads to a desirable nonreciprocity with a big isolation ratio. Moreover, the higher-order couplings between the spin wave modes with the polarized photon modes also exhibit the nonreciprocity. These couplings between polarized photon and spin waves could be regarded as an indirect multi-modes coupling between the ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) mode and spin wave mode magnons mediated by the cavity mode photons. We also derive a coupling matrix to predict the characteristics of this…
Mechanical resonators are promising systems for storing and manipulating information. To transfer information between mechanical modes, either direct coupling or an interface between these modes is needed. In previous works, strong coupling between different modes in a single mechanical resonator and direct interaction between neighboring mechanical resonators have been demonstrated. However, coupling between distant mechanical resonators, which is a crucial request for long-distance classical and quantum information processing using mechanical devices, remains an experimental challenge. Here,…
The interaction between two magnetic spheres in microwave cavities is studied by Mie scattering theory beyond the magnetostatic and rotating wave approximations. We demonstrate that two spatially separated dielectric and magnetic spheres can be strongly coupled over a long distance by standing cavity modes. The interactions splits acoustical (dark) and optical (bright) modes in a way that can be mapped on a molecular orbital theory of the hydrogen molecule. Breaking the symmetry by assigning different radii to the two spheres introduces "ionic" character to the magnonic bonds. These results il…
We demonstrate the dispersive measurement of ferromagnetic resonance in a yttrium iron garnet sphere embedded within a microwave cavity. The reduction in the longitudinal magnetization at resonance is measured as a frequency shift in the cavity mode coupled to the sphere. This measurement is a result of the intrinsic non-linearity in magnetization dynamics, indicating a promising route towards experiments in magnon cavity quantum electro-dynamics.
Two series of [Ru10/Cox)]12 and [Ru6/Cr3/Cox)]12 x=16-60 easy-plane anisotropy multilayers (all thicknesses in Å), prepared by sputter deposition, are studied by cavity FMR. The acoustic modes are excited by setting the RF field perpendicular to the saturating in-plane field. Their resonance fields are in good agreement with the values predicted for acoustic modes by macrospin models, using the interlayer RKKY exchange and anisotropy fields derived by the magnetic measurements. The resonance fields of the modes excited by setting the RF field parallel to the saturating field, are lower than th…
Dipolaritons are mixed light-matter quasiparticles formed in double quantum wells embedded in microcavities. Due to resonant coupling between direct and indirect excitons via electronic tunnelling, dipolaritons possess large dipole moments. Resonant excitation of the cavity mode by a short pulse of light induces oscillations of the indirect exciton density with a characteristic frequency of Rabi flopping. This results in oscillations of classical Hertz dipoles array which generate supperradiant emission on a terahertz (THz) frequency. Resulting THz signal may be enhanced using the supplementar…
A recent proof of concept showed that cavity photons can mediate superconducting (SC) signatures to a ferromagnetic insulator (FI) over a macroscopic distance [Phys. Rev. B, 102, 180506(R) (2020)]. In contrast with conventional proximity systems, this facilitates long-distance FI$\unicode{x2013}$SC coupling, local subjection to different drives and temperatures, and studies of their mutual interactions without proximal disruption of their orders. Here we derive a microscopic theory for these interactions, with an emphasis on the leading effect on the FI, namely, an induced anisotropy field. In…
We theoretically propose a scheme for a spin quantum bit based on a double quantum dot contacted to ferromagnetic elements. Interface exchange effects enable an all electric manipulation of the spin and a switchable strong coupling to a superconducting coplanar waveguide cavity. Our setup does not rely on any specific band structure and can in principle be realized with many different types of nanoconductors. This allows to envision on-chip single spin manipulation and read-out using cavity QED techniques.
Monolayer (ML) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) integrated in optical microcavities host exciton-polaritons as a hallmark of the strong light-matter coupling regime. Analogous concepts for hybrid light-matter systems employing spatially indirect excitons with a permanent electric dipole moment in heterobilayer (HBL) crystals promise realizations of exciton-polariton gases and condensates with immanent dipolar interactions. Here, we identify optical signatures of spatially indirect momentum-bright and momentum-dark interlayer excitons in vertical MoSe$_2$-WSe$_2$ heterostructures and imp…
We realize resonant driving of the magnetization precession by monochromatic phonons in a thin ferromagnetic layer embedded into a phononic Fabry-Perot resonator. A femtosecond laser pulse excites resonant phonon modes of the structure in the 10-40 GHz frequency range. By applying an external magnetic field, we tune the precession frequency relative to the frequency of the phonons localized in the cavity and observe the enormous increase in the amplitude of the magnetization precession when the frequencies of free magnetization precession and phonons localized in the cavity are equal.
Surface acoustic waves (SAWs) in the GHz frequency range can inject spin currents dynamically into adjacent nonmagnetic layers via spin pumping effect associated with ferromagnetic resonance. Here, we demonstrate an enhancement of acoustic ferromagnetic resonance and spin current generation by a pair of SAW reflector gratings, which form an acoustic analogue of the distributed Bragg reflector cavity. In the experiment, we confirmed 2.04 $\pm$ 0.02 times larger SAW power absorption in a device with cavity than in case of no acoustic cavity. We confirmed up to 2.96 $\pm$ 0.02 times larger spin c…
Mechanisms of the recently demonstrated ex-situ thermal control of the indirect exchange coupling in magnetic multilayer are discussed for different designs of the spacer layer. Temperature-induced changes in the hysteresis of magnetization are shown to be associated with different types of competing interlayer exchange interactions. Theoretical analysis indicates that the measured step-like shape and hysteresis of the magnetization loops is due to local in-plane magnetic anisotropy of nano-crystallites within the strongly ferromagnetic films. Comparison of the experiment and theory is used to…
We systematically study the indirect interaction between a magnon mode and a cavity photon mode mediated by travelling photons of a waveguide. From a general Hamiltonian, we derive the effective coupling strength between two separated modes, and obtain the theoretical expression of system's transmission. Accordingly, we design an experimental set-up consisting of a shield cavity photon mode, microstrip line and a magnon system to test our theoretical predictions. From measured transmission spectra, indirect interaction, as well as mode hybridization, between two modes can be observed. All expe…
We experimentally identify the magnetostatic modes active for Brillouin light scattering in the optical whispering gallery modes of a yttrium iron garnet sphere. Each mode is identified by magnetic field dispersion of ferromagnetic-resonance spectroscopy and coupling strength to the known field distribution of the microwave drive antenna. Our optical measurements confirm recent predictions that higher-order magnetostatic modes can also generate optical scattering, according to the selection rules derived from the axial symmetry. From this we summarize the selection rules for Brillouin light sc…
The magnetic ground-state properties of the periodic Anderson model with a regular depletion of the correlated sites are analyzed within different theoretical approaches. We consider the model on the one-dimensional chain and on the two-dimensional square lattice with hopping between nearest neighbors. At half-filling and with correlated impurities present at every second site, the depleted Anderson lattice is the most simple system where the indirect magnetic coupling mediated by the conduction electrons is ferromagnetic. We discuss the underlying electronic structure and the possible mechani…
We propose a quantum state readout mechanism of a weakly coupled qubit in dispersive regime. The hybrid system consists of ferromagnetic insulator and a superconducting qubit in a microwave cavity. The enhancement of the measurement sensitivity is achieved by exerting torque on the ferromagnetic insulator magnetization, which compensates the damping of the system leading to an exceptional point. The proposed machanism allows to measure the qubit state either via the transmission of the cavity or the FMR signal of the magnetic material.
We have studied the moment correlations within triangular lattice arrays of single-domain co-aligned nanoscale ferromagnetic islands. Independent variation of lattice spacing along and perpendicular to the island axis tunes the magnetostatic interactions between islands through a broad range of relative strengths. For certain lattice parameters, the sign of the correlations between near-neighbor island moments is opposite to that favored by the pair-wise interaction. This finding, supported by analysis of the total correlation in terms of direct and convoluted indirect contributions across mul…
In this study, based on the self-energy method and the total energy calculation, the indirect exchange coupling between two semi-infinite ferromagnetic strips (FM electrodes) separated by metallic graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) is investigated. In order to form a FM/GNR/FM junction, a graphitic region of finite length is coupled to the FM electrodes along graphitic zigzag or armchair interfaces of width $N$. The numerical results show that, the exchange coupling strength which can be obtained from the difference between the total energies of electrons in the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic co…
Coherent conversion of microwave and optical photons in the single-quantum level can significantly expand our ability to process signals in various fields. Efficient up-conversion of a feeble signal in the microwave domain to the optical domain will lead to quantum-noise-limited microwave amplifiers. Coherent exchange between optical photons and microwave photons will also be a stepping stone to realize long-distance quantum communication. Here we demonstrate bidirectional and coherent conversion between microwave and light using collective spin excitations in a ferromagnet. The converter cons…
We study spin-photon coupling in cavity in the presence of relative phase shift between two ferromagnetic resonance driving forces. We show that the anticrossing gap can be manipulated by varying the relative phase. Increasing the phase difference leads to narrowing the anticrossing gap of hybridized modes and eventually to phase locked coupling at the value of relative phase of π: The FMR and cavity modes become phase locked and oscillate at the same frequency near the resonance frequency. Characteristic linewidth drop and transmission amplitude enhancement are demonstrated. The phase resolve…
We study dissipative spin-spin coupling in dispersive regime mediated by virtual photons in a microwave cavity. Dissipative coupling between magnetization of each magnetic material and the cavity photons is established by means of two phase shifted driving forces acting on each magnetization. We show that when only one of the magnetization is dissipatively coupled to the cavity, the cavity-mediated spin-spin coupling too, exhibits mode level attraction in the spectrum. By tuning the phase parameter at each ferromagnetic insulator we can shift the order of "dark" and "bright" collective modes w…
Achieving strong coupling between light and matter is usually a challenge in Cavity Quantum Electrodynamics (cQED), especially in solid state systems. For this reason is useful taking advantage of alternative approaches to reach this regime, and then, generate reliable quantum polaritons. In this work we study a system composed of a quantized single mode of a mechanical resonator interacting linearly with both a single mode nanocavity and a two-level single quantum dot. In particular, we focus on the behavior of the indirect light-matter interaction when the phonon mode interfaces both parts. …
Achieving quantum correlations between two distant systems is a desirable feature for quantum networking. In this work, we study a system composed of two quantum emitter-cavity subsystems spatially separated. A mechanical resonator couples to either both quantum emitters or both cavities leading to quantum correlations between both subsystems such as non-local light-matter dressed states and cavity-cavity normal mode splitting. These indirect couplings can be explained by an effective Hamiltonian for large energy detuning between the mechanical resonator and the atoms/cavities. Moreover, it is…
Surface alloys are highly flexible materials for tailoring the spin-dependent properties of surfaces. Here, we study the spin-dependent band structure of a DyAg$_2$ surface alloy formed on an Ag(111) crystal. We find a significant exchange spin-splitting of the localized Dy 4f states pointing to a ferromagnetic coupling between the localized Dy moments at $40\,$K. The magnetic coupling between these moments is mediated by an indirect, RKKY-like exchange coupling via the spin-polarized electrons of the hole-like Dy-Ag hybrid surface state.
Generating non-classical states in macroscopic systems is a long standing challenge. A promising platform in the context of this quest are novel hybrid systems based on magnetic dielectrics, where photons can couple strongly and coherently to magnetic excitations, although a non-classical state therein is yet to be observed. We propose a scheme to generate a magnetization cat state, i.e. a quantum superposition of two distinct magnetization directions, using a conventional setup of a macroscopic ferromagnet in a microwave cavity. Our scheme uses the ground state of an ellipsoid shaped magnet, …
Magnon-polaritons are hybrid light-matter quasiparticles originating from the strong coupling between magnons and photons. They have emerged as a potential candidate for implementing quantum transducers and memories. Owing to the dampings of both photons and magnons, the polaritons have limited lifetimes. However, stationary magnon-polariton states can be reached by a dynamical balance between pumping and losses, so the intrinsical nonequilibrium system may be described by a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. Here we design a tunable cavity quantum electrodynamics system with a small ferromagnetic sph…
We study a system comprising of a double quantum well embedded in a micropillar optical cavity, where strong coupling between a direct exciton, indirect exciton, and cavity photon is achieved. We show that the resulting hybrid quasiparticles - dipolaritons - can induce strong photon correlations and lead to anti-bunched behaviour of the cavity output field. The origin of the observed single photon emission is attributed to unconventional photon blockade. Moreover, we find that the second-order equal time correlation function $g^{(2)}(0)$ can be tuned over a large range using an electric field …
We show that very large paramagnetic moments are created in ultrathin Pd layers through indirect interlayer exchange coupling. Pd $L$-edge x-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurements show Pd moments in [Pd(2.5nm)/Cu(3nm)/Ni$_{81}$Fe$_{19}$(5nm)/Cu(3nm)]$_{20}$ superlattices which are ferromagnetically aligned with the applied field and nearly 3% the size of Pd moments created in directly exchange coupled [Pd(2.5nm)/Ni$_{81}$Fe$_{19}$(5nm)]$_{20}$ superlattices. The induced moment is two orders of magnitude larger than that expected from RKKY exchange acting on the bulk paramagnetic suscepti…
We show here the existence of the indirect coupling of electron and magnetic or nuclear ion spins in self-assembled quantum dots mediated by electron-electron interactions. With a single localized spin placed in the center of the dot, only the spins of electrons occupying the zero angular momentum states couple directly to the localized spin. We show that when the electron-electron interactions are included, the electrons occupying finite angular momentum orbitals interact with the localized spin. This effective interaction is obtained using exact diagonalization of the microscopic Hamiltonian…
Cooling the motion of a massive mechanical oscillator into its quantum ground state plays an essential role in observing macroscopic quantum effects in mechanical systems. Here we propose a measurement-based feedback cooling protocol in cavity magnomechanics that is able to cool the mechanical vibration mode of a macroscopic ferromagnet into its ground state. The mechanical mode couples to a magnon mode via a dispersive magnetostrictive interaction, and the latter further couples to a microwave cavity mode via the magnetic-dipole interaction. A feedback loop is introduced by measuring the ampl…
A ferromagnetic sphere can support \textit{optical vortices} in forms of whispering gallery modes and \textit{magnetic quasi-vortices} in forms of magnetostatic modes with non-trivial spin textures. These vortices can be characterized by their orbital angular momenta. We experimentally investigate Brillouin scattering of photons in the whispering gallery modes by magnons in the magnetostatic modes, zeroing in on the exchange of the orbital angular momenta between the optical vortices and the magnetic quasi-vortices. We find that the conservation of the orbital angular momentum results in diffe…
A system of magnetic molecules coupled to microwave cavities ($LC$ resonators) undergoes the equilibrium superradiant phase transition. The transition is experimentally observable. The effect of the coupling is first illustrated by the vacuum-induced ferromagnetic order in a quantum Ising model and then by the modification of the magnetic phase diagram of ${\rm Fe_8}$ dipolar crystals, exemplifying the cooperation between intrinsic and photon-induced spin-spin interactions. Finally, a transmission experiment is shown to resolve the transition, measuring the quantum electrodynamical control of …
We propose a scheme for the controllable preparation of a cold indirect exciton condensate using dipolaritonic setup with an optical pumping. Dipolaritons are bosonic quasiparticles which arise from the coupling between cavity photon (C), direct exciton (DX), and indirect exciton (IX) modes, and appear in a double quantum well embedded in a semiconductor microcavity. Controlling the detuning between modes of the system, the limiting cases of exciton-polaritons and indirect excitons can be realized. Our protocol relies on the initial preparation of an exciton polariton condensate for the far bl…
We demonstrate large normal-mode splitting between a magnetostatic mode (the Kittel mode) in a ferromagnetic sphere of yttrium iron garnet and a microwave cavity mode. Strong coupling is achieved in the quantum regime where the average number of thermally or externally excited magnons and photons is less than one. We also confirm that the coupling strength is proportional to the square root of the number of spins. A nonmonotonic temperature dependence of the Kittel-mode linewidth is observed below 1 K and is attributed to the dissipation due to the coupling with a bath of two-level systems.
Chiral coupling at the single-quantum level promises to be a remarkable potential for quantum information processing. Here we propose to achieve a chiral interaction between a magnon mode in a ferromagnetic sphere and a superconducting qubit mediated by a one-dimensional coupled-cavity array. When the qubit is coupled to two lattice sites of the array and each one is encoded with a tunable phase, we can acquire a directional qubit-magnon interaction via the quantum interference effect. This work opens up a new route to construct chiral devices, which are expected to become a building block in …
We suggest an indirect method of detection of photons with zero projection of spin mediated by emission of terahertz photons. This terahertz source is based on a system of microcavity exciton polaritons in the regime of polariton BEC formation when the cavity photons acquire an effective mass being localised in the cavity and therefore receive the third spin degree of freedom (corresponding to the longitudinal polarization with chirality l = 0). The optical transitions can occur between two polariton ground states based on the light-hole and heavy-hole excitons, respectively, accompanied by th…
It is generally believed that superconductivity only weakly affects the indirect exchange between magnetic impurities. If the distance r between impurities is smaller than than the superconducting coherence length (r < ξ), this exchange is thought to be dominated by RKKY interactions, identical to the those in a normal metallic host. This perception is based upon a perturbative treatment of the exchange interaction. Here, we provide a non-perturbative analysis and demonstrate that the presence of Yu-Shiba-Rusinov bound states induces a strong 1/r^2 anti-ferromagnetic interaction that can domin…
We use quantum Monte Carlo method to study the indirect coupling between two magnetic impurities on the zigzag edge of graphene ribbon, with respect to the chemical potential $μ$. We find that the spin-spin correlation between two adatoms located on the nearest sites in the zigzag edge are drastically suppressed around the zero-energy. As we switch the system away from half-filling, the antiferromagnetic correlation is first enhanced and then decreased. If the two adatoms are adsorbed on the sites belonging to the same sublattice, we find similar behavior of spin-spin correlation except for a …
We analyze the interaction of a nanomagnet with a single photonic mode of a microcavity in a fully quantum-mechanical treatment and find that exceptionally large quantum-coherent magnet-photon coupling can be achieved. Coupling terms in excess of several THz are predicted to be achievable in a spherical cavity of ~1 mm radius with a nanomagnet of ~100 nm radius and ferromagnetic resonance frequency of ~200 GHz. Eigenstates of the magnet-photon system correspond to entangled states of spin orientation and photon number, in which over 10^5 values of each quantum number are represented; conversel…
Spin pumping by ferromagnetic resonance is one of the most common technique to determine spin hall angles, Edelstein lengths or spin diffusion lengths of a large variety of materials. In recent years, rising concerns have appeared regarding the interpretation of these experiments, underlining that the signal could arise purely from thermoelectric effects, rather than from coherent spin pumping. Here, we propose a method to evaluate the presence or absence of thermal effects in spin pumping signals, by combining bolometry and spin pumping by ferromagnetic resonance measurements, and comparing t…
We investigate the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction between two spins located at two quantum dots embedded in an Aharonov-Bohm (AB) ring. In such a system the RKKY interaction, which oscillates as a function of the distance between two local spins, is affected by the flux. For the case of the ferromagnetic RKKY interaction, we find that the amplitude of AB oscillations is enhanced by the Kondo correlations and an additional maximum appears at half flux, where the interaction is switched off. For the case of the antiferromagnetic RKKY interaction, we find that the phase of AB os…
Cavity photons and ferromagnetic spins excitations can exchange information coherently in hybrid architectures, at speeds set by their mutual coupling strength. Speed enhancement is usually achieved by optimizing the geometry of the electromagnetic cavity. Here we show that the geometry of the ferromagnet plays also an important role, by setting the fundamental frequency of the magnonic resonator. Using focused ion beam patterning, we vary the aspect ratio of different Permalloy samples reaching operation frequencies above 10 GHz while working at low external magnetic fields. Additionally, we …
In the paper we consider the system composed of two magnetic planes attached to zigzag terminations of the graphene nanostructure being an ultrashort fragment of the armchair nanoribbon. We investigate theoretically an indirect coupling between these magnetic planes mediated by charge carriers as a function of external in-plane electric field. The calculations are based on a tight-binding model supplemented with Hubbard term to account for coulombic interactions. For selected sizes of the graphene nanostructure, particularly high sensitivity of the coupling to the electric field is found. This…
We theoretically explore optical bistability for possible signature of all optical switching and their performance in a hybrid quantum optomechanical system comprising of two semiconductor microcavity coupled optically. One of the cavity is driven by an external optical pump laser while the second cavity which contains a quantum dot is indirectly driven by light transmitted from the first cavity. The generated bistable behavior due to optomechanical nonlinearity shows a typical optical switching behavior and it can be controlled by changing the laser power, QD cavity coupling, rocking paramete…

We propose a general theory of microwave absorption spectroscopy for symmetry-breaking synthetic antiferromagnets (SAFs). Generally, inhomogeneity or different thickness of the two ferromagnetic sublayers of a SAF results in the intrinsic symmetry breaking, while out-of-plane components of dc magnetic fields lead to the extrinsic one. The broken symmetry of SAFs excludes the original symmetry-protected crossing between pure in-phase and out-of-phase resonance modes with opposite parity. Alternatively, new frequency branches become hybridization of original bare modes in terms of symmetry-break…
