We study dissipative spin-spin coupling in dispersive regime mediated by virtual photons in a microwave cavity. Dissipative coupling between magnetization of each magnetic material and the cavity photons is established by means of two phase shifted driving forces acting on each magnetization. We show that when only one of the magnetization is dissipatively coupled to the cavity, the cavity-mediated spin-spin coupling too, exhibits mode level attraction in the spectrum. By tuning the phase parameter at each ferromagnetic insulator we can shift the order of "dark" and "bright" collective modes with phase difference equal to 0 or π. Moreover, by selectively applying the phase shifted field it is possible to construct "dark" and "bright" collective modes with phase difference equal to \pm π/2:
We investigate long-range coherent and dissipative coupling between two spatially separated magnets while both are coupled to a microwave cavity. A careful examination of the system shows that the indirect interaction between two magnon modes is dependent on their individual mechanisms of direct coupling to the cavity. If both magnon modes share the same form of coupling to the cavity (either coherent or dissipative), then the indirect coupling between them will produce level repulsion. Conversely, if the magnon modes have different forms of coupling to the cavity (one coherent and one dissipa…
Dissipative coupling of resonators arising from their cooperative dampings to a common reservoir induces intriguingly new physics such as energy level attraction. In this study, we report the nonlinear properties in a dissipatively coupled cavity magnonic system. A magnetic material YIG (yttrium iron garnet) is placed at the magnetic field node of a Fabry-Perot-like microwave cavity such that the magnons and cavity photons are dissipatively coupled. Under high power excitation, a nonlinear effect is observed in the transmission spectra, showing bistable behaviors. The observed bistabilities ar…
Strong interactions between magnetic materials and electrodynamic cavities mix together spin and photon properties, producing unique hybridized behaviour. The study of such coupled spin-photon systems, known as cavity magnonics, is motivated by the flexibility and controllability of these hybridized states for spintronic and quantum information technologies. In this tutorial we examine and compare both coherent and dissipative interactions in cavity magnonics. We begin with a familiar case study, the coupled harmonic oscillator, which provides insight into the unique characteristics of coheren…
Employing the ultrafast control of electronic states of a semiconductor quantum dot in a cavity, we introduce a novel approach to achieve on-demand emission of single photons with almost perfect indistinguishability and photon pairs with near ideal entanglement. Our scheme is based on optical excitation off-resonant to a cavity mode followed by ultrafast control of the electronic states using the time-dependent quantum-confined Stark effect, which then allows for cavity-resonant emission. Our theoretical analysis takes into account cavity-loss mechanisms, the Stark effect, and phonon-induced d…
We study the dynamics and decoherence of a system of two strongly driven qubits in a dissipative cavity. The two qubits have no direct interaction and are individually off-resonantly coupled to a single mode of quantized radiation. We derive analytical solutions to the Lindblad-type master equation and study the evolution of the entanglement of this system. We show that with non-zero detuning between the quantum and classical fields, the initial decay of the entanglement is followed by its revival periodic in time. We show that different Bell states follow evolutions with different rates.
Magnon as a quantized spin wave has attracted extensive attentions in various fields of physics, such as magnon spintronics, microwave photonics, and cavity quantum electrodynamics. Here, we explore theoretically magnon chaos-order transition in cavity optomagnonics, which is still remains largely unexplored in this emerging field. We find that the evolution of the magnon experiences the transition from order to period-doubling bifurcation and finally enter chaos by adjusting the microwave driving power. Different from the normal chaos, the magnon chaos-order transition proposed here is phase-…

A theoretical model for the phonon-mediated off-resonant coupling between a quantum dot and a cavity, under resonant excitation of the quantum dot, is presented. We show that the coupling is caused by electron-phonon interaction in the quantum dot and is enhanced by the cavity. We analyze recently observed resonant quantum dot spectroscopic data by our theoretical model.
The recent realization of a coherent interface between a single electron in a silicon quantum dot and a single photon trapped in a superconducting cavity opens the way for implementing photon-mediated two-qubit entangling gates. In order to couple a spin to the cavity electric field some type of spin-charge hybridization is needed, which impacts spin control and coherence. In this work we propose a cavity-mediated two-qubit gate and calculate cavity-mediated entangling gate fidelities in the dispersive regime, accounting for errors due to the spin-charge hybridization, as well as photon- and p…
We calculate heating rate, attractive conservative and tangential dissipative fluctuation electromagnetic forces felt by a thick plate moving with nonrelativistic velocity parallel to a closely spaced another plate in rest using relativistic fluctuation electrodynamics. We argue that recently developed relativistic out of equilibrium theory of fluctuation electromagnetic interactions (Volokitin et. al., Phys.Rev. B78, 155437 (2008))has serious drawbacks.
We study a hybrid system formed from an optomechanical resonator and a cavity mode strongly coupled to an excitonic transition inside a quantum well. We show that due to the mixing of cavity photon and exciton states, the emergent quasiparticles - polaritons - possess coupling to the mechanical mode of both dispersive and dissipative nature. We calculate the occupancies of polariton modes and reveal bistable behavior, which deviates from conventional Kerr nonlinearity or dispersive coupling cases due to the dissipative coupling. The described system serves as a good candidate for future polari…
We demonstrate the long range strong coupling of magnetostatic modes in spatially separated ferromagnets mediated by a microwave frequency cavity. Two spheres of yttrium iron garnet are embedded in the cavity and their magnetostatic modes probed using a dispersive measurement technique. We find they are strongly coupled to each other even when detuned from the cavity modes. We investigate the dependence of the magnet-magnet coupling on the cavity detuning $Δ$, and find a $1/Δ$ dependence also characteristic of cavity-coupled superconducting qubits. Dark states of the coupled magnetostatic mode…
We study matter wave bistability in a spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate dispersively coupled to a unidirectional ring cavity. A unique feature is that the population exchange among different modes of matter fields are accomplished via the spin-exchange collisions. We show that the interplay between the atomic spin mixing and the cavity light field can lead to a strong matter wave nonlinearity, making matter wave bistability in a cavity at the single-photon level achievable.
We investigate photon-mediated transport processes in a hybrid circuit-QED structure consisting of two double quantum dots coupled to a common microwave cavity. Under suitable resonance conditions, electron transport in one double quantum dot is facilitated by the transport in the other dot via photon-mediated processes through the cavity. We calculate the average current in the quantum dots, the mean cavity photon occupation, and the current cross-correlations with both a full numerical simulation and a recursive perturbation scheme that allows us to include the influence of the cavity order-…
Scalable architectures for quantum information technologies require to selectively couple long-distance qubits while suppressing environmental noise and cross-talk. In semiconductor materials, the coherent coupling of a single spin on a quantum dot to a cavity hosting fermionic modes offers a new solution to this technological challenge. Here, we demonstrate coherent coupling between two spatially separated quantum dots using an electronic cavity design that takes advantage of whispering-gallery modes in a two-dimensional electron gas. The cavity-mediated long-distance coupling effectively min…
We demonstrate quantum control and entanglement generation using a Landau-Zener beam splitter formed by coupling two transmon qubits to a superconducting cavity. Single passage through the cavity-mediated qubit-qubit avoided crossing provides a direct test of the Landau-Zener transition formula. Consecutive sweeps result in Landau-Zener-Stuckelberg interference patterns, with a visibility that can be sensitively tuned by adjusting the level velocity through both the non-adiabatic and adiabatic regimes. Two-qubit state tomography indicates that a Bell state can be generated via a single passage…
We experimentally study an optomechanical cavity that is formed between a mechanical resonator, which serves as a movable mirror, and a stationary on-fiber dielectric mirror. A significant change in the behavior of the system is observed when the distance between the fiber's tip and the mechanical resonator is made smaller than about 1 micrometer. The observed effects are attributed to the combined influence of Casimir force, Coulomb interaction due to trapped charges, and optomechanical coupling. The comparison between experimental results and theory yields a partial agreement.
We develop a two-dimensional stochastic dissipative theory for the description of the transport of exciton polaritons accounting for their interaction with the environment of acoustic phonons. Our approach is based on the explicit modeling of the corresponding microscopic processes using a Monte Carlo framework rather than modeling from phenomenological principles. We show the dynamic formation of a condensate and investigate its characteristics, including threshold-like behavior in populations and the formation of spatial and temporal coherence at different temperatures of the environment and…
We consider a laser-driven and dissipative system of two coupled cavities with Jaynes-Cummings nonlinearity. In particular, we investigate both incoherent and coherent laser driving, corresponding to different experimental situations. We employ Arnoldi time evolution as a numerical tool to solve exactly the many-body master equation describing the non-equilibrium quantum system. We evaluate the fluorescence spectrum and the spectrum of the second-order correlation function of the emitted light field. Finally, we relate the measured spectra of the dissipative quantum system to excitations of th…
The dynamics of arbitrary-order quantum correlations in a cavity magnon-polariton system are investigated based on the quantum master equation in the coherent state representation. The phenomena of Rabi-like oscillation and level repulsion of the average cavity-photon number agree remarkably well with existing experimental observations. The competing nature of coherent and incoherent components in these two cases is further revealed by the second-order quantum coherence of the cavity photons and magnons, which can be systematically tuned by the driving microwave and thermal bath. Our results d…
We investigate pump-induced exciton inversion in a quantum-dot cavity system with continuous wave drive. Using a polaron-based master equation, we demonstrate excited-state populations above 0.9 for an InAs dot at a phonon bath temperature of 4K. In an exciton-driven system, the dominant mechanism is incoherent excitation from the phonon bath. For cavity driving, the mechanism is phonon-mediated switching between ground- and excited-state branches of the ladder of photon states, as quantum trajectory simulations clearly show. The exciton inversion as a function of detuning is found to be quali…
We investigate theoretically the generation of indistinguishable single photons from a strongly dissipative quantum system placed inside an optical cavity. The degree of indistinguishability of photons emitted by the cavity is calculated as a function of the emitter-cavity coupling strength and the cavity linewidth. For a quantum emitter subject to strong pure dephasing, our calculations reveal that an unconventional regime of high indistinguishability can be reached for moderate emittercavity coupling strengths and high quality factor cavities. In this regime, the broad spectrum of a dissipat…
We show unusual cooperative two-photon resonance between two-modes of field inside a photonic crystal cavity. The two-photon resonance occurs when two off resonant quantum dots emit one photon in each cavity mode and de-excite simultaneously. In the presence of phonon coupling the conditions for two-photon resonance change significantly. Using such two-photon two-mode interaction we propose to generate entangled state of two qutrits. The basis of a qutrit are formed by the state of the cavity mode containing $0$, $1$ and $2$ photons. We also discuss effect of phonon coupling on negativity of t…
We investigate electron paring in a two-dimensional electron system mediated by vacuum fluctuations inside a nanoplasmonic terahertz cavity. We show that the structured cavity vacuum can induce long-range attractive interactions between current fluctuations which lead to pairing in generic materials with critical temperatures in the low-Kelvin regime for realistic parameters. The induced state is a pair density wave superconductor which can show a transition from a fully gapped to a partially gapped phase - akin to the pseudogap phase in high-$T_c$ superconductors. Our findings provide a promi…
Microwave cavities with high quality factors enable coherent coupling of distant quantum systems. Virtual photons lead to a transverse exchange interaction between qubits, when they are non-resonant with the cavity but resonant with each other. We experimentally probe the inverse scaling of the inter-qubit coupling with the detuning from a cavity mode and its proportionality to the qubit-cavity interaction strength. We demonstrate that the enhanced coupling at higher frequencies is mediated by multiple higher-harmonic cavity modes. Moreover, in the case of resonant qubits, the symmetry propert…
Cavity Magnonics is an emerging field that studies the strong coupling between cavity photons and collective spin excitations such as magnons. This rapidly developing field connects some of the most exciting branches of modern physics, such as quantum information and quantum optics, with one of the oldest science on the earth, the magnetism. The past few years have seen a steady stream of exciting experiments that demonstrate novel magnon-based transducers and memories. Most of such cavity magnonic devices rely on coherent coupling that stems from direct dipole-dipole interaction. Recently, a …
We investigate the emergence of long-range electron hopping mediated by cavity vacuum fields in disordered quantum Hall systems. We show that the counter-rotating (anti-resonant) light-matter interaction produces an effective hopping between disordered eigenstates within the last occupied Landau band. The process involves a number of intermediate states equal to the Landau degeneracy: each of these states consists of a virtual cavity photon and an electron excited in the next Landau band with the same spin. We study such a cavity-mediated hopping mechanism in the dual presence of a random diso…
We study the interplay between charge transport and light-matter interactions in a confined geometry, by considering an open, mesoscopic chain of two-orbital systems resonantly coupled to a single bosonic mode close to its vacuum state. We introduce and benchmark different methods based on self-consistent solutions of non-equilibrium Green's functions and numerical simulations of the quantum master equation, and derive both analytical and numerical results. It is shown that in the dissipative regime where the cavity photon decay rate is the largest parameter, the light-matter coupling is respo…
Pure dephasing is widely used in the literature to explain experimental observations on quantum dots in cavities. In many cases, its use is not enough and extra terms need to be "fictitiously" added to accomplish with the observed data as it is the case of cavity pumping of an unknown source. Here we controvert the validity of the pure dephasing mechanism as a source of decoherence and present a theoretical study based on the phonon-mediated coupling that can explain the emission spectrum and photon auto- and cross-correlation results in recent experiments without the need of any artificial as…
We systematically study the indirect interaction between a magnon mode and a cavity photon mode mediated by travelling photons of a waveguide. From a general Hamiltonian, we derive the effective coupling strength between two separated modes, and obtain the theoretical expression of system's transmission. Accordingly, we design an experimental set-up consisting of a shield cavity photon mode, microstrip line and a magnon system to test our theoretical predictions. From measured transmission spectra, indirect interaction, as well as mode hybridization, between two modes can be observed. All expe…
Optical solitons are an ideal platform for the implementation of communication lines, since they can be packed extremely close one to another without risking partial loss of the encoded information due to their interaction. On the other hand, soliton-soliton interactions are needed to implement computations and achieve all-optical information processing. Here we study how bright dissipative polariton solitons interact and exploit their interaction to implement AND and OR gates with state of the art technology. Moreover, we show that soliton-soliton interaction can be used to determine the sign…
Recent work (PRX 7, 041008) has shown that a spin coupled to two externally supplied circularly-polarized electromagnetic modes can effectuate a topological, quantized transfer of photons from one mode to the other. Here we study the effect in the case when only one of the modes is externally provided, while the other is a dynamical quantum mechanical cavity mode. Focusing on the signatures and stability under experimentally accessible conditions, we show that the effect persists down to the few-photon quantum limit and that it can be used to generate highly entangled "cat states" of cavity an…
Pure dephasing processes limit the fidelities achievable in driven-dissipative schemes for stabilization of entangled states of qubits. We propose a scheme which, combined with already existing entangling methods, purifies the desired entangled state by driving out of equilibrium auxiliary dissipative cavity modes coupled to the qubits. We lay out the specifics of our scheme and compute its efficiency in the particular context of two superconducting qubits in a cavity-QED architecture, where the strongly coupled auxiliary modes provided by collective cavity excitations can drive and sustain th…
We follow the passage from complex amplitude bistability to phase bistability in the driven dissipative Jaynes-Cummings oscillator. Quasidistribution functions in the steady state are employed, for varying qubit-cavity detuning and drive parameters, in order to track a first-order dissipative quantum phase transition up to the critical point marking a second-order transition and spontaneous symmetry breaking. We demonstrate the photon blockade breakdown in the dispersive regime, and find that the coexistence of cavity states in the regime of quantum bistability is accompanied by pronounced qub…
We theoretically study the driven-dissipative Harper-Hofstadter model on a 2D square lattice in the presence of a weak harmonic trap. Without pumping and loss, the eigenstates of this system can be understood, in certain limits, as momentum-space toroidal Landau levels, where the Berry curvature, a geometrical property of an energy band, acts like a momentum-space magnetic field. We show that key features of these eigenstates can be observed in the steady-state of the driven-dissipative system under a monochromatic coherent drive, and present a realistic proposal for an optical experiment usin…
Mechanical oscillators can be cooled by coupling them to an optical or microwave cavity. Going beyond the standard quantum noise approach we find an analytic expression for the steady-state phonon number in systems where the position of the mechanical oscillator modulates the cavity frequency as well as the cavity line width. We trace the origin for the quantum limit of cooling to fluctuations in the optical force both at and away from the mechanical frequency. Finally, we calculate the minimal phonon number for the different types of coupling. Our study elucidates how to beneficially combine …
We theoretically investigate the analog of electromagnetically induced transparency, absorption and parametric amplification in a hybrid opto-electromechanical system consisting of an optical cavity and a microwave cavity coupled to a common nanomechanical resonator. When the two cavity modes are driven on their respective red sidebands by two pump beams and a probe beam is applied to the optical cavity to monitor the optical response of the hybrid system, we find that a transparency window appears in the probe transmission spectrum due to destructive interference. When the optical cavity is p…
We consider two qubits interacting by means of an optical cavity, where each qubit is represented by a single electron spin confined to a quantum dot. It is known that electron spins in III-V semiconductor quantum dots are affected by the decoherence due to the hyperfine interaction with nuclear spins. Here we show that the interaction between two qubits is influenced by the Overhauser field as well. Starting from an unpolarizied nuclear ensemble, we investigate the dependance of the fidelities for two-qubit gates on the Overhauser field. We include the hyperfine interaction perturbatively to …
We experimentally demonstrate coupling of an atomically thin, free-standing graphene membrane to an optical cavity. By changing the position of the membrane along the standing-wave field of the cavity we tailor the dissipative coupling between the membrane and the cavity, and we show that the dissipative coupling can outweigh the dispersive coupling. Such a system, for which controlled dissipation prevails dispersion, will prove useful for novel laser-cooling schemes in optomechanics. In addition, we have determined the continuous-wave optical damage threshold of free-standing monolayer graphe…
Mesoscopic spin ensembles coupled to a cavity offer the exciting prospect of observing complex nonclassical phenomena that pool the microscopic features from a few spins with those of macroscopic spin ensembles. Here, we demonstrate how the collective interactions in an ensemble of as many as hundred spins can be harnessed to obtain a periodic pulse train of nonclassical light. To unravel the full quantum dynamics and photon statistics, we develop a time-adaptive variational renormalization group method that accurately captures the underlying Lindbladian dynamics of the mesoscopic spin-cavity …
A resistive coupling circuit is used to model the recently discovered dissipative coupling in a hybridized cavity photon-magnon system. With this model as a basis we have designed a planar cavity in which a controllable transition between level attraction and level repulsion can be achieved. This behaviour can be quantitatively understood using an LCR circuit model with a complex coupling strength. Our work therefore develops and verifies a circuit method to model level repulsion and level attraction and confirms the universality of dissipative coupling in the cavity photon-magnon system. The …
Recently, the possibility of inducing superconductivity for electrons in two dimensional materials has been proposed via cavity-mediated pairing. The cavity-mediated electron-electron interactions are long range, which has two main effects: firstly, within the standard BCS-type pairing mediated by adiabatic photons, the superconducting critical temperature depends polynomially on the coupling strength, instead of the exponential dependence characterizing the phonon-mediated pairing; secondly, as we show here, the effect of photon fluctuations is significantly enhanced. These mediate novel non-…
We study the optomechanical coupling of a single-layer graphene with a high-Q Fabry-Perot microcavity in the membrane-in-the-middle configuration. In ordinary dissipative coupling systems, mechanical oscillators modulate the loss associated with the input coupling of the cavity mode; while in our system, the graphene oscillator couples dissipatively with the cavity mode through modulating its absorption loss. By analyzing the effects of the interband transition of a graphene suspended near the node of the cavity field, we obtain strong and tunable dissipative coupling without excessively reduc…
We introduce a second quantization scheme based on quasinormal modes, which are the dissipative modes of leaky optical cavities and plasmonic resonators with complex eigenfrequencies. The theory enables the construction of multi-plasmon/photon Fock states for arbitrary three-dimensional dissipative resonators and gives a solid understanding to the limits of phenomenological dissipative Jaynes-Cummings models. In the general case, we show how different quasinormal modes interfere through an off-diagonal mode coupling and demonstrate how these results affect cavity-modified spontaneous emission.…
