We investigate both the classical and quantum gravitational collapse of a charged, non-rotating $n$-dimensional BTZ black hole in AdS space. This is done by first deriving the conserved mass of a "spherically" symmetric domain wall, which is then taken as the classical Hamiltonian of the domain wall.
In the classical picture, we show that, as far as the asymptotic observer is concerned, the details of the collapse depend on the amount of charge present in the domain wall. In the both the extremal and non-extremal cases, the collapse takes an infinite amount of observer time to complete. However, in the over-charged case, the collapse never actually occurs, instead one finds an oscillatory solution which prevents the formation of a naked singularity. As far as the infalling observer is concerned, the collapse is completed within a finite amount of proper time. Thus, the gravitational collapse follows that of the typical formation of a black hole via gravitational collapse.
Quantum mechanically, in the absence of induced quasi-particle production and fluctuations of the metric geometry, we take primary interest in the behavior of the collapse near the horizon and near the classical singularity from the point of view of both asymptotic and infalling observers. For the asymptotic observer, we find that quantum effects near the horizon do not change the classical conclusions. For the infalling observer, the most interesting quantum mechanical effect are when the collapsing shell approaches the classical singularity. Here, we find, that the quantum effects in this region display non-local effects, which depend on the energy density of the domain wall.
During the last few years, exact solutions that describe black holes that are bound to a two-brane in a four dimensional anti-de Sitter bulk have been constructed. In situations wherein there is a negative cosmological constant on the brane, for large masses, these solutions are exactly the rotating BTZ black holes on the brane and, in fact, describe rotating BTZ black strings in the bulk. We evaluate the canonical entropy of a free and massless scalar field (at the Hawking temperature) around the rotating BTZ black string using the brick wall model. We explicitly show that the Bekenstein-Hawk…
We find an exact nonstatic charged BTZ-like solutions, in ($N$+1)-dimensional Einstein gravity in the presence of negative cosmological constant and a nonlinear Maxwell field defined by a power $s$ of the Maxwell invariant, which describes the gravitational collapse of charged null fluid in an anti-de Sitter background. Considering the situation that a charged null fluid injects into the initially an anti-de Sitter spacetime, we show that a black hole form rather than a naked singularity, irrespective of spacetime dimensions, from gravitational collapse in accordance with cosmic censorship con…
We investigate the gravitational collapse of a non-rotating $n$-dimensional BTZ black hole in AdS space in the context of both classical and quantum mechanics. This is done by first deriving the conserved mass of a "spherically" symmetric domain wall, which is taken as the classical Hamiltonian of the black hole. Upon deriving the conserved mass, we also point out that, for a "spherically" symmetric shell, there is an easy and straight-forward way of determining the conserved mass, which is related to the proper time derivative of the interior and exterior times. This method for determining th…
We present a family of exact solutions, depending on two parameters $α$ and $b$ (related to the scalar field strength), to the three-dimensional Einstein-scalar field equations with negative cosmological constant $Λ$. For $b=0$ these solutions reduce to the static BTZ family of vacuum solutions, with mass $M = -α$. For $b\neq0$, the solutions become dynamical and develop a strong spacelike central singularity. The $α<0$ solutions are black-hole like, with a global structure topologically similar to that of the BTZ black holes, and a finite effective mass. We show that the near-singularity beha…
Noncommutative geometry is an established potential candidate for including quantum phenomena in gravitation. We outline the formalism of Hopf algebras and its connection to the algebra of infinitesimal diffeomorphisms. Using a Drinfeld twist we deform spacetime symmetries, algebra of vector fields and differential forms leading to a formulation of noncommutative Einstein equations. We study a concrete example of charged BTZ spacetime and deformations steaming from the so called angular twist. The entropy of the noncommutative charged BTZ black hole is obtained using the brick-wall method. We …
In this work, we consider a noncommutative (NC) massless scalar field coupled to the classical nonrotational BTZ geometry. In a manner of the theories where the gravity emerges from the underlying scalar field theory, we study the effective action and the entropy derived from this noncommutative model. In particular, the entropy is calculated by making use of the two different approaches, the brick wall method and the heat kernel method designed for spaces with conical singularity. We show that the UV divergent structures of the entropy, obtained through these two different methods, agree with…
We perform Hamiltonian reduction of a model in which 2+1 dimensional gravity with negative cosmological constant is coupled to a cylindrically symmetric dust shell. The resulting action contains only a finite number of degrees of freedom. The phase space consists of two copies of $ADS^2$ -- both coordinate and momentum space are curved. Different regions in the Penrose diagram can be identified with different patches of $ADS^2$ momentum space. Quantization in the momentum representation becomes particularly simple in the vicinity of the horizon, where one can neglect momentum non-commutativity…
In a recent publication we developed a canonical quantization program describing the gravitational collapse of a spherical dust cloud in 2+1 dimensions with a negative cosmological constant $-Λ\equiv -l^{-2}<0$. In this paper we address the quantization of the Banados--Teitelboim--Zanelli (BTZ) black hole. We show that the mass function describing the black hole is made of two pieces, a constant non-vanishing boundary contribution and a discrete spectrum of the form $μ_n = \frac{\hbar}{l}(n+ \frac 12)$. The discrete spectrum is obtained by applying the Wheeler--DeWitt equation with a particula…
We investigate gravitational collapse of a $(3+1)$-dimensional BTZ black string in AdS space in the context of both classical and quantum mechanics. This is done by first deriving the conserved mass per unit length of the cylindrically symmetric domain wall, which is taken as the classical Hamiltonian of the black string. In the quantum mechanical context, we take primary interest in the behavior of the collapse near the horizon and near the origin (classical singularity) from the point of view of an infalling observer. In the absence of radiation, quantum effects near the horizon do not chang…
We investigate the quantum particle creation during the circularly symmetric collapse of a 2+1 dust cloud, for the cases when the cosmological constant is either zero or negative. We derive the Ford-Parker formula for the 2+1 case, which can be used to compute the radiated quantum flux in the geometric optics approximation. It is shown that no particles are created when the collapse ends in a naked singularity, unlike the 3+1 case. When the collapse ends in a BTZ black hole, we recover the expected Hawking radiation.
We study the time evolution of the entropy of a collapsing charged spherical domain wall, from the point of view of an asymptotic observer, by investigating the entropy of the entire system (i.e. charged domain wall and radiation) and induced radiation alone during the collapse. By taking the difference, we find the entropy of the collapsing charged domain wall, since this is the object which will form a black hole. We find that for large values of time (times larger than $tf_-/R_+\approx8$), the entropy of the collapsing domain wall is a constant, which is of the same order as the Bekenstein-…
In this paper the BTZ black hole geometry is probed with a noncommutative scalar field which obeys the $κ$-Minkowski algebra. The entropy of the BTZ black hole is calculated using the brick wall method. The contribution of the noncommutativity to the black hole entropy is explicitly evaluated up to the first order in the deformation parameter. We also argue that such a correction to the black hole entropy can be interpreted as arising from the renormalization of the Newton's constant due to the effects of the noncommutativity.
We present results of numerical simulations of the formation of black holes from the gravitational collapse of a massless, minimally-coupled scalar field in 2+1 dimensional, axially-symmetric, anti de-Sitter (AdS) spacetime. The geometry exterior to the event horizon approaches the BTZ solution, showing no evidence of scalar `hair'. To study the interior structure we implement a variant of black-hole excision, which we call singularity excision. We find that interior to the event horizon a strong, spacelike curvature singularity develops. We study the critical behavior at the threshold of blac…
Numerical simulations are performed of the gravitational collapse of a scalar field with a λϕ^4 potential. Comparisons are made with the thin shell approximation.
We construct a one-parameter family of exact time-dependent solutions to 2+1 gravity with a negative cosmological constant and a massless minimally coupled scalar field as source. These solutions present a continuously self-similar (CSS) behaviour near the central singularity, as observed in critical collapse, and an asymptotically AdS behaviour at spatial infinity. We consider the linear perturbation analysis in this background, and discuss the crucial question of boundary conditions. These are tested in the special case where the scalar field decouples and the linear perturbations describe e…
Two classes of metrics obtained from non-Riemannian gravitational collapse are presented. The first is the Taub planar symmetric exact solutions of Einstein-Cartan field equations of gravity describing torsion walls which are obtained from gravitational collapse of time dependent perturbation of Riemannian Taub symmetric solutions of General Relativity. The second is a modification of the Vilenkin Riemannian planar wall which is obtained from a non-Riemannian planar distribution of spinning matter.
We investigate the time evolution of the temperature and entropy of gravitationally collapsing domain walls as seen by an asymptotic observer. In particular, we seek to understand how topology and the addition of a cosmological constant affect the gravitational collapse. Previous work has shown that the entropy of a spherically symmetric collapsing domain approaches a constant. In this paper, we reproduce these results, using both a fully quantum and a semi-classical approach, then we repeat the process for a de Sitter Schwarzschild domain wall (spherical with cosmological constant) and a (3+1…
We investigate the time evolution of the temperature and entropy of a gravitationally collapsing cylinder, represented by an infinitely thin domain wall, as seen by an asymptotic observer. Previous work has shown that the entropy of a spherically symmetric collapsing domain approaches a constant, and we follow this procedure using a (3+1) BTZ metric to see if a different topology will yield different results. We do this by coupling a scalar field to the background of the domain wall and analyzing the spectrum of radiation as a function of time. We find that the spectrum is quasi-thermal, with …
In this paper, we present the results on the gravitational collapse of charged massless scalar field in asymptotically flat spacetime with a perfectly reflecting wall. Differing from previous works, we study the system in the double null coordinates, by which we could simulate the system until the black hole forms with higher precision but less performance time. We investigate the influence of charge on the black hole formation and the scaling behavior near the critical collapses. The gapless and gapped critical behaviors for black hole mass and charge are studied numerically. We find that the…
In this paper we will examine the consequence of a canonical theory of quantum dust collapse in 2+1 dimensions. The solution of the WDW equation describing the collapse indicates that collapsing shells outside the apparent horizon are accompanied by outgoing shells within the apparent horizon during their collapse phase and stop collapsing once they reach the apparent horizon. Taking this picture of quantum collapse seriously, we determine a static solution with energy density corresponding to a dust ball whose collapse has terminated at the apparent horizon. We show that the boundary radius o…
To clarify observational consequence of bubble nucleations in inflationary era, we analyse dynamics of a spherical domain wall in an expanding universe. We consider a spherical shell of the domain wall with tension $σ$ collapsing in a spherically-symmetric dust universe, which is initially separated into the open Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker universe inside the shell and the Einstein-de Sitter universe outside. The domain wall shell collapses due to the tension, and sweeps the dust fluid. The universe after the collapse becomes inhomogeneous and is described by the Lemaître-Tolman-Bondi…
We investigate the collapse of a circularly symmetric star with outgoing radiation in ($2+1$)-dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetime. The exterior spacetime of the collapsing star is assumed to be described by the non-static generalization of the Bañados, Teitelboim and Zanelli [{\em Phys. Rev. Lett.} {\bf 69} (1992) 1849 ] metric. Making use of the junction conditions joining smoothly the interior and the exterior spacetimes across the boundary, we analyze the impacts of various factors on the evolution of the star which begins its collapse from an initial static configuration. In particular, d…
Critical collapse of a spherically symmetric domain wall is investigated. The domain wall is made of a minimally coupled scalar field with a double well potential. We consider a sequence of the initial data which describe a momentarily static domain wall characterized by its initial radius. The time evolution is performed by a full general relativistic numerical code for spherically symmetric systems. In this paper, we use the maximal slice gauge condition, in which spacelike time slices may penetrate the black hole horizon differently from other widely used procedures. In this paper, we consi…
In this work, inspired by the symmetron model, we analyse the evolution of spherical domain walls by considering specific potentials that ensure symmetry breaking and the occurrence of degenerate vacua that are necessary for the formation of domain walls. By considering a simple analytical model of spherical domain wall collapse in vacuum, it is shown that this model fits the more accurate numerical results very well until full collapse, after which oscillations and scalar radiation take place. Furthermore, we explore the effect of a central non-relativistic matter lump on the evolution of a s…
The gravitational collapse of a massless scalar field enclosed with a perfectly reflecting wall in a spacetime with a cosmological constant $Λ$ is investigated. The mass scaling for the gapped collapse $ M_{AH}-M_g \propto (ε_c-ε)^ξ$ is confirmed and a new time scaling for the gapped collapse $T_{AH}-T_g\propto(ε_c-ε)^ζ$ is found. We find that both of these two critical exponents depend on the combination $ΛR^2$, where $R$ is the radial position of the reflecting wall. Especially, we find an evolution of the critical exponent $ξ$ from $0.37$ in the confined asymptotic dS case with $ΛR^2=1.5$ t…
We study the time evolution of the entropy of a collapsing spherical domain wall, from the point of view of an asymptotic observer, by investigating the entropy of the entire system (i.e. domain wall and radiation) and induced radiation alone during the collapse. By taking the difference, we find the entropy of the collapsing domain wall, since this is the object which will form a black hole. We find that for large values of time (times larger than $t/R_s\approx8$), the entropy of the collapsing domain wall is a constant, which is of the same order as the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy.
We study quantum radiation emitted during the collapse of a quantized, gravitating, spherical domain wall. The amount of radiation emitted during collapse now depends on the wavefunction of the collapsing wall and the background spacetime. If the wavefunction is initially in the form of a sharp wavepacket, the expectation value of the particle occupation number is determined as a function of time and frequency. The results are in good agreement with our earlier semiclassical analysis and show that the quantum radiation is non-thermal and evaporation accompanies gravitational collapse.
In this note, I derive the Chandrasekhar instability of a fluid sphere in ($N$+1)-dimensional Schwarzschild-Tangherlini spacetime and take the homogeneous (uniform energy density) solution for illustration. Qualitatively, the effect of positive (negative) cosmological constant tends to destabilize (stabilize) the sphere. In the absence of cosmological constant, the privileged position of (3+1)-dimensional spacetime is manifest in its own right. As it is the marginal dimensionality in which a monatomic ideal fluid sphere is stable but not too stable to trigger the onset of gravitational collaps…
In this thesis we investigate quantum mechanical effects to various aspects of gravitational collapse. These quantum mechanical effects are implemented in the context of the Functional Schrödinger formalism. The Functional Schrödinger formalism allows us to investigate the time-dependent evolutions of the quantum mechanical effects, which is beyond the scope of the usual methods used to investigate the quantum mechanical corrections of gravitational collapse. Utilizing the time-dependent nature of the Functional Schrödinger formalism, we study the quantization of a spherically symmetric domain…
In this paper, we study the collapse of a superhorizon-sized void in the early, radiation-dominated universe using an improved general relativistic code. We find that in general a relativistic or nonrelativistic void collapses via a shock at the speed of light. This is true even if the outward velocity of the void wall is enormous. As the wall thickness decreases, the shock strength increases and the collapse time decreases up to a limit set by the shock tube solution. In addition, as the outward velocity of the wall increases, the collapse time increases somewhat. When the collapse occurs in …
We study the gravitational collapse problem of rotating shells in three-dimensional Einstein gravity with and without a cosmological constant. Taking the exterior and interior metrics to be those of stationary metrics with asymptotically constant curvature, we solve the equations of motion for the shells from the Darmois-Israel junction conditions in the "co-rotating" frame. We study various collapse scenarios with "arbitrary" angular momentum for a variety of geometric configurations, including anti-de Sitter, de Sitter, and flat spaces. We find that the collapsing shells can form a BTZ black…
We study a simple system that comprises all main features of critical gravitational collapse, originally discovered by Choptuik and discussed in many subsequent publications. These features include universality of phenomena, mass-scaling relations, self-similarity, symmetry between super-critical and sub-critical solutions, etc. The system we consider is a stationary membrane (representing a domain wall) in a static gravitational field of a black hole. For a membrane that spreads to infinity, the induced 2+1 geometry is asymptotically flat. Besides solutions with Minkowski topology there exist…
We investigate the effect of induced massive radiation given off during the time of collapse of a massive spherically symmetric domain wall in the context of the functional Schrödinger formalism. Here we find that the introduction of mass suppresses the occupation number in the infrared regime of the induced radiation during the collapse. The suppression factor is found to be given by $e^{-βm}$, which is in agreement with the expected Planckian distribution of induced radiation. Thus a massive collapsing domain wall will radiate mostly (if not exclusively) massless scalar fields, making it dif…
In three-dimensional AdS space, we consider the gravitational collapse of dust shell and then investigate the quantum radiation from the collapsing shell by employing the functional Schrödinger formalism. In the formation of the BTZ black hole, the interior geometry of the shell can be chosen as either the massless black hole or the global AdS space. In the incipient black hole limit, we obtain the wave function exactly from the time-dependent Schrödinger equation for a massless scalar field. Then, we show that the occupation number of excited states can be written by analytic expressions, and…
We use the brick wall model to calculate the free energy of quantum scalar field in a curved spacetime (D +1) dimensions. We find the thermodynamics properties of quantum scalar field in several scenaries: Minkowski spacetime, Schwarzschild spacetime and BTZ spacetime. For the cases analysed, the thermodynamical properties of quantum scalar field is exactly with the reported. It was found that the entropy of the gas is proportional to the horizon area in a gravity field strong, which is consistent with the holographic principle.
The functional Schrodinger equation is used to study the quantum collapse of a gravitating, spherical domain wall and a massless scalar field coupled to the metric. The approach includes backreaction of pre-Hawking radiation on the gravitational collapse. Truncating the degrees of freedom to a minisuperspace leads to an integro-differential Schrodinger equation. We define a "black hole" operator and find its eigenstates. The black hole operator does not commute with the Hamiltonian, leading to an energy-black holeness uncertainty relation. We discuss energy eigenstates and also obtain a partia…
We investigate the formation of primordial black holes (PBHs) from the collapse of spherically symmetric domain wall bubbles, which spontaneously nucleate via quantum tunneling during inflation. Since the tension of domain walls changes with time and so domain walls nucleate in a short time interval, the mass function of PBHs in general has a spike-like structure. In contrast to models in which PBHs produced from overdense regions, our model avoids the uncertainties of PBHs production mechanism. PBHs from domain walls with mass around $10^{20}\mathrm{g}$ may constitute all dark matter, those w…
Evidences for the primordial black holes (PBH) presence in the early Universe renew permanently. New limits on their mass spectrum challenge existing models of PBH formation. One of the known model is based on the closed walls collapse after the inflationary epoch. Its intrinsic feature is multiple production of small mass PBH which might contradict observations in the nearest future. We show that the mechanism of walls collapse can be applied to produce substantially different PBH mass spectra if one takes into account the classical motion of scalar fields together with their quantum fluctuat…
A numerical and analytic treatment is presented here of the evolution of initial data of the kind that was conjectured by Hertog, Horowitz and Maeda to lead to a violation of cosmic censorship. That initial data is essentially a thick domain wall connecting two regions of anti de Sitter space. The evolution results in no violation of cosmic censorship, but rather the formation of a small black hole.
We investigate the effect on the Hawking radiation given off during the time of collapse of a Reisner-Nordström domain wall. Using the functional Schrödinger formalism we are able to probe the time-dependent regime, which is out of the reach of the standard approximations like the Bogolyubov method. We calculate the occupation number of particles for a scalar field and complex scalar field. We demonstrate that the particles from the scalar field are unaffected by the charge of the Reisner-Nordström domain wall, as is expected since the scalar field doesn't carry any charge, which would couple …
An infalling shell in the hard wall model provides a simple holographic model for energy injection in a confining gauge theory. Depending on its parameters, a scalar shell either collapses into a large black brane, or scatters between the hard wall and the anti-de Sitter boundary. In the scattering regime, we find numerical solutions that keep oscillating for as long as we have followed their evolution, and we provide an analytic argument that shows that a black brane can never be formed. This provides examples of states in infinite-volume field theory that never thermalize. We find that the f…

We study the formation of black holes by spherical domain wall collapse as seen by an asymptotic observer, using the functional Schrodinger formalism. To explore what signals such observers will see, we study radiation of a scalar quantum field in the collapsing domain wall background. The total energy flux radiated diverges when backreaction of the radiation on the collapsing wall is ignored, and the domain wall is seen by the asymptotic observer to evaporate by non-thermal ``pre-Hawking radiation'' during the collapse process. Evaporation by pre-Hawking radiation implies that an asymptotic o…

The next-to-minimal supersymmetric standard model predicts the formation of domain walls due to the spontaneous breaking of the discrete $Z_3$-symmetry at the electroweak phase transition, and they collapse before the epoch of big bang nucleosynthesis if there exists a small bias term in the potential which explicitly breaks the discrete symmetry. Signatures of gravitational waves produced from these unstable domain walls are estimated and their parameter dependence is investigated. It is shown that the amplitude of gravitational waves becomes generically large in the decoupling limit, and tha…
