We show that the BTZ black hole in a finite radial cavity realizes a closed finite-cutoff thermodynamic system whose renormalized Brown-York stress tensor is simultaneously the quasilocal stress tensor of the cavity and the stress tensor of the cutoff dual theory. The central result is the exact finite-radius Hamilton-Jacobi equation for the wall stress tensor and its realization by the static and rotating BTZ families in local wall variables. In the homogeneous wall frame this equation becomes a nonlinear equation of state, with the corresponding gravitational deformation parameter fixed entirely by the bulk couplings. We use this structure to formulate the rotating cavity directly in terms of wall-measured grand-canonical data, derive the corresponding quasilocal first law and radial flow equations, and identify the finite-size Hawking-Page transition. The same wall dictionary gives an exact finite-cutoff spectral map and a deformed Cardy density of states in quasilocal energy variables. The cavity radius therefore plays a controlled double role: it is the physical size of the Brown-York thermodynamic system and the cutoff scale of the dual finite-radius theory.
We consider the duality of the quasilocal black hole thermodynamics, explicitly the quasilocal black hole thermodynamic first law, in BTZ black hole solution as a special one of the three-dimensional low energy effective string theory.
We investigate some modifications of the static BTZ black hole solution due to a chosen asymptotically constant dilaton/scalar. New classes of static black hole solutions are obtained. One of the solutions contains the Martinez-Zanelli conformal black hole solution as a special case. Using quasilocal formalism, we calculate their mass for a finite spatial region that contains the black hole. Their temperatures are also computed. Finally, using some of the curvature singularities as examples, we investigate whether a quantum particle behaves singularly or not.
We review the relation between AdS spacetime in 1+2 dimensions and the BTZ black hole. Later we show that a ground state in AdS spacetime becomes a thermal state in the BTZ black hole. We show that this is true in the bulk and in the boundary of AdS spacetime. The existence of this thermal state is tantamount to say that the Unruh effect exists in AdS spacetime and becomes the Hawking effect for an eternal BTZ black hole. In order to make this we use the correspondence introduced in Algebraic Holography between algebras of quasi-local observables associated to wedges and doble cones regions in…
We solve semiclassical Einstein equations in two dimensions with a massive source and we find a static, thermodynamically stable, quantum black hole solution in the Hartle-Hawking vacuum state. We then study the black hole geometry generated by a boundary mass sitting on a non-zero tension 1-brane embedded in a three-dimensional BTZ black hole. We show that the two geometries coincide and we extract, using holographic relations, information about the CFT living on the 1-brane. Finally, we show that the quantum black hole has the same temperature of the bulk BTZ, as expected from the holographi…
String theory can accommodate black holes with the black hole parameters related to string moduli. It is a well known but remarkable feature that the near horizon geometry of a large class of black holes arising from string theory contains a BTZ part. A mathematical theorem (Sullivan's Theorem) relates the three dimensional geometry of the BTZ metric to the conformal structures of a two dimensional space, thus providing a precise kinematic statement of holography. Using this theorem it is possible to argue that the string moduli space in this region has to have negative curvature from the BTZ …
We consider the quasilocal thermodynamics of rotating black holes in asymptotically flat and asymptotically anti de Sitter spacetimes. Using the minimal number of intrinsic boundary counterterms inspired by the AdS/CFT correspondence, we find that we are able to carry out an analysis of the thermodynamics of these black holes for virtually all possible values of the rotation parameter and cosmological constant that leave the quasilocal boundary well-defined, going well beyond what is possible with background subtraction methods. Specifically, we compute the quasilocal energy $E$ and angular mo…
We propose a 1+1 dimensional CFT dual structure for quantum gravity and matter on the extended 2+1 dimensional BTZ black hole, realized as a quotient of the Poincare patch of AdS$_3$. The quotient spacetime includes regions beyond the singularity, "whiskers", containing timelike and lightlike closed curves, which at first sight seem unphysical. The spacetime includes the usual AdS-asymptotic boundaries outside the horizons as well as boundary components inside the whiskers. We show that local boundary correlators with some endpoints in the whisker regions: (i) are a protected class of amplitud…
We analyze the fermionic quasinormal modes of the BTZ black hole in the presence of space-time noncommutativity. Our analysis exploits a duality between a spinless and spinning BTZ black hole, the spin being proportional to the noncommutative deformation parameter. Using the AdS/CFT correspondence we show that the horizon temperatures obtained from the dual CFT pick up noncommutative contributions. We demonstrate the equivalence between the quasinormal and non-quasinormal modes for the noncommutative fermionic probes, which provides further evidence of holography in the noncommutative setting.…
The holographic description in the presence of gravitational Chern-Simons term is studied. The modified gravitational equations are integrated by using the Fefferman-Graham expansion and the holographic stress-energy tensor is identified. The stress-energy tensor has both conformal anomaly and gravitational or, if re-formulated in terms of the zweibein, Lorentz anomaly. We comment on the structure of anomalies in two dimensions and show that the two-dimensional stress-energy tensor can be reproduced by integrating the conformal and gravitational anomalies. We study the black hole entropy in th…
We compute logarithmic corrections to the black hole entropy $S_{\rm bh}$ in a holographic set up where the cosmological constant $Λ$ and Newton's constant $G_D$ are taken to be thermodynamic parameters, related to variations in bulk pressure \(P\) and central charge \(c\). In the bulk, the logarithmic corrections are of the form: $\mathcal{S} = S_{\rm bh} - k \ln S_{\rm bh} + \cdots$ arising due to fluctuations in thermodynamic volume, induced by a variable $Λ$, in addition to energy fluctuations. We explicitly compute this coefficient $k$ for the BTZ black hole and show that the result match…
We investigate the three-dimensional behavior of gravity coupled to a dynamical unit timelike vector: the aether, and present two new classes of exact charged solutions. When c_{13}=0,Λ'=0$, we find the solutions is the usual BTZ black hole but now with an universal horizon. In the frame of black hole chemistry, we then calculate the temperature of the universal horizons and, construct the Smarr formulas and first law in the three cases: quasi-asymptotically flat, aether asymptotically flat and quasi-BTZ black hole spacetime. We found these universal horizons obey an exact (or slightly modifie…

We show that scalar perturbations of the eternal, rotating BTZ black hole should lead to an instability of the inner (Cauchy) horizon, preserving strong cosmic censorship. Because of backscattering from the geometry, plane wave modes have a divergent stress tensor at the event horizon, but suitable wavepackets avoid this difficulty, and are dominated at late times by quasinormal behavior. The wavepackets have cuts in the complexified coordinate plane that are controlled by requirements of continuity, single-valuedness and positive energy. Due to a focusing effect, regular wavepackets neverthel…
One version of the membrane paradigm states that as far as outside observers are concerned, black holes can be replaced by a dissipative membrane with simple physical properties located at the stretched horizon. We demonstrate that such a membrane paradigm is incomplete in several aspects. We argue that it generically fails to capture the massive quasinormal modes, unless we replace the stretched horizon by the exact event horizon, and illustrate this with a scalar field in a BTZ black hole background. We also consider as a concrete example linearized metric perturbations of a five-dimensional…
One of the most challenging technical aspects of the dualities between string theory on anti-de Sitter spaces and conformal field theories is understanding how location in the interior of spacetime is represented in the field theory. It has recently been argued that the interior of the spacetime can be directly probed by using intrinsically non-local quantities in the field theory. In addition, Balasubramanian and Ross [hep-th/9906226] argued that when the spacetime described the formation of an AdS_3 black hole, the propagator in the field theory probed the whole spacetime, including the regi…
In loop quantum gravity the quantum states of a black hole horizon are produced by point-like discrete quantum geometry excitations (or {\em punctures}) labelled by spin $j$. The excitations possibly carry other internal degrees of freedom also, and the associated quantum states are eigenstates of the area $A$ operator. On the other hand, the appropriately scaled area operator $A/(8π\ell)$ is also the physical Hamiltonian associated with the quasilocal stationary observers located at a small distance $\ell$ from the horizon. Thus, the local energy is entirely accounted for by the geometric ope…
The Brown-York stress tensor provides a means for defining quasilocal gravitational charges in subregions bounded by a timelike hypersurface. We consider the generalization of this stress tensor to null hypersurfaces. Such a stress tensor can be derived from the on-shell subregion action of general relativity associated with a Dirichlet variational principle, which fixes an induced Carroll structure on the null boundary. The formula for the mixed-index tensor $T{}^i{}_j$ takes a remarkably simple form that is manifestly independent of the choice of auxiliary null vector at the null surface, an…
Holography relates the quasinormal modes frequencies of AdS black holes to the pole structure of the dual field theory propagator. These modes thus provide the timescale for the approach to thermal equilibrium in the CFT. Here, we study how such pole structure and, in particular, the time to equilibrium can get modified in the presence of a black hole hair. More precisely, we consider in AdS a set of relaxed boundary conditions that allow for a low decaying graviton mode near the boundary, which triggers an additional degree of freedom. We solve the scalar field response on such background ana…
