We perform Hamiltonian reduction of a model in which 2+1 dimensional gravity with negative cosmological constant is coupled to a cylindrically symmetric dust shell. The resulting action contains only a finite number of degrees of freedom. The phase space consists of two copies of $ADS^2$ -- both coordinate and momentum space are curved. Different regions in the Penrose diagram can be identified with different patches of $ADS^2$ momentum space. Quantization in the momentum representation becomes particularly simple in the vicinity of the horizon, where one can neglect momentum non-commutativity. In this region, we calculate the spectrum of the shell radius. This spectrum turns out to be continuous outside the horizon and becomes discrete inside the horizon with eigenvalue spacing proportional to the square root of the black hole mass. We also calculate numerically quantum transition amplitudes between different regions of the Penrose diagram in the vicinity of the horizon. This calculation shows a possibility of quantum tunneling of the shell into classically forbidden regions of the Penrose diagram, although with an exponentially damped rate away from the horizon.
Recently, Bañados, Teitelboim and Zanelli (BTZ) \cite{BTZ1992} has discovered an explicit vacuum solution of (2+1)-dimensional gravity with negative cosmological constant. It has been argued that the existence of such physical systems with an event horizon and thermodynamic properties similar to (3+1) dimensional black holes. These vacuum solutions of (2+1)-dimensional gravity are asymptotically anti-de Sitter and are known as BTZ black holes. We provide a new type of thin-shell stable wormhole from the BTZ black holes. This is the first example of stable thin shell wormhole in (2+1)-dimension…
The thermodynamic equilibrium states of a static thin ring shell in a (2+1)-dimensional spacetime with a negative cosmological constant are analyzed. Inside the ring, the spacetime is pure anti-de Sitter (AdS), whereas outside it is a Bañados-Teitelbom-Zanell$ (BTZ) spacetime and thus asymptotically AdS. The first law of thermodynamics applied to the thin shell, plus one equation of state for the shell's pressure and another for its temperature, leads to a shell's entropy, which is a function of its gravitational radius alone. A simple example for this gravitational entropy, namely, a power la…
In this paper, we construct thin-shell wormholes in (2+1)-dimensions from noncommutative BTZ black hole by applying the cut-and-paste procedure implemented by Visser. We calculate the surface stresses localized at the wormhole throat by using the Darmois-Israel formalism, and we find that the wormholes are supported by matter violating the energy conditions. In order to explore the dynamical analysis of the wormhole throat, we consider that the matter at the shell is supported by dark energy equation of state P = wρwith w < 0. The stability analysis is carried out of these wormholes to lineari…
We present exact solutions describing rotating, inhomogeneous dust with generic initial data in 2+1 dimensional AdS spacetime and show how they are smoothly matched to the Banados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) solution in the exterior. The metrics, which are the rotational analogues of the 2+1 dimensional LeMaitre-Tolman-Bondi (LTB) family, are described by their angular momentum and one additional constant which, together with the angular momentum, determines the energy density of the dust cloud. The weak energy condition gives a constraint on the angular momentum profile inside the cloud. Solutio…
We investigate the thermodynamic equilibrium states of a rotating thin shell, i.e., a ring, in a (2+1)-dimensional spacetime with a negative cosmological constant. The inner and outer regions with respect to the shell are given by the vacuum anti-de Sitter and the rotating Bañados-Teitelbom-Zanelli spacetimes, respectively. The first law of thermodynamics on the thin shell, together with three equations of state for the pressure, the local inverse temperature and the thermodynamic angular velocity of the shell, yields the entropy of the shell, which is shown to depend only on its gravitational…
Using a thin shell, the first law of thermodynamics, and a unified approach, we study the thermodymanics and find the entropy of a (2+1)-dimensional extremal rotating Bañados-Teitelbom-Zanelli (BTZ) black hole. The shell in (2+1) dimensions, i.e., a ring, is taken to be circularly symmetric and rotating, with the inner region being a ground state of the anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime and the outer region being the rotating BTZ spacetime. The extremal BTZ rotating black hole can be obtained in three different ways depending on the way the shell approaches its own gravitational or horizon radius…
In a (2+1)-dimensional spacetime with a negative cosmological constant, the thermodynamics and the entropy of an extremal rotating thin shell, i.e., an extremal rotating ring, are investigated. The outer and inner regions are taken to be the Bañados-Teitelbom-Zanelli (BTZ) spacetime and the vacuum ground state anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime, respectively. By applying the first law of thermodynamics to the extremal shell one shows that its entropy is an arbitrary function of the gravitational area $A_+$ alone, $S=S(A_+)$. When the shell approaches its own gravitational radius $r_+$ and turns in…
We consider the Hawking-Page phase transition between the BTZ black hole of $M \ge 0$ and the thermal soliton of $M=-1$. In this system, there exists a mass gap so that there does not seem to exist a continuous thermodynamic phase transition. We consistently construct the off-shell free energies of the black hole and the soliton by properly taking into account the conical space. And then, the continuous off-shell free energy to describe tunneling effect can be realized through non-equilibrium solitons.
In this paper, we investigate the entanglement entropy for the generalized charged BTZ black hole through the $AdS_{3}/CFT_{2}$ correspondence. Using the holographic description of the entanglement entropy for the strip-subsystem in boundary $CFT_{2}$, we will find the first law-like relation between the variation of holographic entanglement entropy and the variation of energy of the subsystem in terms of the mass and the electric charge up to the second order. We also obtain appropriate counterterms to renormalize the energy tensor associated with the bulk on-shell actions.
We analyse vacuum decay in rotating BTZ black hole spacetimes with the thin wall approximation. Possible parameter regions for the vacuum decay are clarified. We find that the nucleation rate is dominated by the bounce solution with the static shell configuration. The nucleation rate of the static shell decreases with the mass of the initial black hole. For a larger/smaller value of the initial black hole, the nucleation rate can be smaller/larger than that of the Coleman De Luccia vacuum decay in the pure AdS spacetime. Through the vacuum decay, the black hole gains its mass and loses the hor…
We consider a collision of two dust thin shells with a high center-of-mass (CM) energy including their self-gravity in a Bañados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) spacetime. The shells divide the BTZ spacetime into three domains and the domains are matched by the Darmois-Israel junction conditions. We treat only the collision of two shells which corotate with a background BTZ spacetime because of the junction conditions. The counterpart of the corotating shell collision is a collision of two particles with vanishing angular momenta. We compare the dust thin shell collision and the particle collision in…
Although all popular approaches to quantum gravity are able to recover the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy-area law in the thermodynamic limit, there are significant differences in their descriptions of the microstates and in the application of statistics. Therefore they can have significantly different phenomenological implications. For example, requiring indistinguishability of the elementary degrees of freedom should lead to changes in the black hole's radiative porperties away from the thermodynamic limit and at low temperatures. We demonstrate this for the Bañados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) blac…
We propose a new model of a gravastar in (2+1) anti-de Sitter space-time. This new three dimensional configuration has three different regions with different equations of state: [I] Interior: 0 \leq r < r_1, ρ= -p ; [II] Shell: r_1 \leq r < r_2, ρ= p; [III] Exterior: r_2 < r, ρ= p =0. The outer region of this gravastar corresponds to the exterior (2+1) anti-de Sitter space-time, popularly known as the BTZ space-time. Like BTZ model, Λis taken to be negative, which at the junction turns out to be positive as required by stability of gravastar and mathematical consistency. After investigating th…
Using the Bondi-Sachs formalism, the problem of a gravitational wave source surrounded by a spherical dust shell is considered. Using linearized perturbation theory, the geometry is found in the regions: in the shell, exterior to the shell, and interior to the shell. It is found that the dust shell causes the gravitational wave to be modified both in magnitude and phase, but without any energy being transferred to or from the dust.
The dynamics of the dust-shell model of universe is exactly solved for the modified Schwarzschild solution. This solution is used to derive the cosmology corresponding to the modified gravity.
Solutions describing the gravitational collapse of asymptotically flat cylindrical and prolate shells of (null) dust are shown to admit globally naked singularities.
A simple and direct, based on the equations of motion, derivation of the variational principle and effective actions for a spherical charged dust shell in general relativity is offered. This principle is based on the relativistic version of the DÆAlembert principle of virtual displacements and leads to the effective actions for the shell, which describe the shell from the point of view of the exterior or interior stationary observers. Herewith, sides of the shell are considered independently, in the coordinates of the interior or exterior region of the shell. Canonical variables for a charged …
We consider a particular Bardeen black hole in 2+1-dimensions. The black hole is sourced by a radial electric field in non-linear electrodynamics (NED). The solution is obtained anew by the alternative Hamiltonian formalism. For $r\rightarrow \infty $ it asymptotes to the charged BTZ black hole. It is shown that by inserting a charged, thin-shell (or ring) the charge of the regular black hole can be screened from the external world.
Hawking radiation is viewed as a tunnelling process. In this way the effect of self-gravitation gives rise to semiclassical corrections to the entropy of the (2+1) BTZ black hole. The modified entropy, due to specific modelling of the self-gravitation effect, of the (2+1) BTZ black hole is evaluated. To first order in $ω$ which is a shell of energy radiated outwards the event horizon of the BTZ black hole, modified entropy is proportional to the horizon. In this semiclassical analysis, corrections to the Bekenstein-Hawking formula $S_{BH}=\mathcal{A}_{H} / 4l_{P}^{2}$ are found to be negative …
We studied the gravitational collapse of a shell of dust in shape dynamics. We found out static and oscillatory solutions. In the large momentum limit we found out that the shell never reaches the singularity when the momentum of the shell is much larger than the mass of the shell in magnitude. The shell does not reach to the origin in a finite amount of time however when the momentum of the shell becomes comparable to minus the mass of shell, the large momentum approximation breaks down. Therefore more detailed future works hopefully may be able to answer the question of singularity formation…
We study the dynamics of charged, spherically symmetric dust shells in the presence of a positive cosmological constant. We find generalizations of the well-known solutions in asymptotically flat spacetime, in particular orbits into "parallel universes", but also new solutions corresponding to a "bounce" of the shell before an event horizon has formed. We also discuss "bubble" solutions, in which a charged shell and an oppositely charged singularity are spontaneously created and annihilated.
We present an idealised model of gravitational collapse, describing a collapsing rotating cylindrical shell of null dust in flat space, with the metric of a spinning cosmic string as the exterior. We find that the shell bounces before closed timelike curves can be formed. Our results also suggest slightly different definitions for the mass and angular momentum of the string.
We consider a spherical thick shell immersed in two different spherically symmetric space-times. Using the fact that the boundaries of the thick shell with two embedding space-times must be nonsingular hypersurfaces, we develop a scheme to obtain the underlying equation of motion for the thick shell in general. As a simple example, the equation of motion of a spherical dustlike shell in vacuum is obtained. To compare our formalism with the thin shell one, the dynamical equation of motion of the thick shell is then expanded to the first order of its thickness. It is easily seen that the thin sh…
We study the dynamics of a spherically symmetric dust shell separating two spacetime domains, the 'interior' one being a part of the de Sitter spacetime and the exterior one having the 'extremal' Reissner-Nordstroem geometry. Extending the ideas of previous works on the subject, we show that the it is possible to determine the (metastable) WKB quantum states of this gravitational system.
A concentric charged thin-shell encircling a Reissner-Nordström black hole screens the clectric / magnetic charge completely to match with an external Schwarzschild black hole. The negative mass thin-shell is shown to be stable against radial perturbations. It is shown further that by reversing the roles of inside Reissner-Nordström and outside Schwarzschild geometries the mass of the appropriate shell becomes positive.
The general formulas of a non-rotating dynamic thin shell that connects two arbitrary cylindrical regions are given using Israel's method. As an application of them, the dynamics of a thin shell made of counter-rotating dust particles, which emits both gravitational waves and massless particles when it is expanding or collapsing, is studied. It is found that when the models represent a collapsing shell, in some cases the angular momentum of the dust particles is strong enough to halt the collapse, so that a spacetime singularity is prevented from forming, while in other cases it is not, and a …
Quantum-mechanical model of self-gravitating dust shell is considered. To clarify the relation between classical and quantum spacetime which the shell collapse form, we consider various time slicing on which quantum mechanics is developed. By considering the static time slicing which corresponds to an observer at a constant circumference radius, we obtain the wave functions of the shell motion and the discrete mass spectra which specify the global structures of spherically symmetric spacetime formed by the shell collapse. It is found that wormhole states are forbidden when the rest mass is com…
A simple self gravitating system --- a thin spherical shell of charged pressureless matter --- is naively quantized as a test case of quantum gravitational collapse. The model is interpreted in terms of an inner product on the positive energy states. An S-matrix is constructed describing scattering between negatively and positively infinite radius.
We consider a quantum mechanical black hole model introduced in {\it Phys.Rev.}, {\bf D57}, 1118 (1998) that consists of the selfgravitating dust shell. The Schroedinger equation for this model is a finite difference equation with the shift of the argument along the imaginary axis. Solving this equation in quasiclassical limit in complex domain leads to quantization conditions that define discrete quasiclassical mass spectrum. One of the quantization conditions is Bohr-Sommerfeld condition for the bound motion of the shell. The other comes from the requirement that the wave function is unambig…
The variational principle for a spherical configuration consisting of a thin spherical dust shell in gravitational field is constructed. The principle is consistent with the boundary-value problem of the corresponding Euler-Lagrange equations, and leads to ``natural boundary conditions''. These conditions and the field equations following from the variational principle are used for performing of the reduction of this system. The equations of motion for the shell follow from the obtained reduced action. The transformation of the variational formula for the reduced action leads to two natural va…
This paper considers the quantum collapse of infinitesimally thin dust shells in 2+1 gravity. In 2+1 gravity a shell is no longer a sphere but a ring of matter. The classical equation of motion has been considered by Peleg and Steif and Cristosomo and Olea. The minisuperspace quantum problem can be reduced to that of a harmonic oscillator in terms of the curvature radius of the shell, allowing the use of well-known methods to find the motion of coherent wave packets that give the quantum collapse of the shell. Classically, as the radius of the shell falls below a certain point, a horizon forms…
In a recent publication we developed a canonical quantization program describing the gravitational collapse of a spherical dust cloud in 2+1 dimensions with a negative cosmological constant $-Λ\equiv -l^{-2}<0$. In this paper we address the quantization of the Banados--Teitelboim--Zanelli (BTZ) black hole. We show that the mass function describing the black hole is made of two pieces, a constant non-vanishing boundary contribution and a discrete spectrum of the form $μ_n = \frac{\hbar}{l}(n+ \frac 12)$. The discrete spectrum is obtained by applying the Wheeler--DeWitt equation with a particula…
We present a systematical study of static D >= 4 space-times of high symmetry with the matter source being a thin charged dust hypersurface shell. The shell manifold is assumed to have the following structure S_(beta) X R^(D-2-beta), beta (in the interval <0,...,D-2>) is dimension of a sphere S_(beta). In case of (beta) = 0, we assume that there are two parallel hyper-plane shells instead of only one. The space-time has Majumdar-Papapetrou form and it inherits the symmetries of the shell manifold - it is invariant under both rotations of the S_(beta) and translations along R^(D-2-beta). We fin…
The relation between angular diameter distance and redshift in a spherically symmetric dust-shell universe is studied. This model has large inhomogeneities of matter distribution on small scales. We have discovered that the relation agrees with that of an appropriate Friedmann-Lemaitre(FL) model if we set a ``homogeneous'' expansion law and a ``homogeneous'' averaged density field. This will support the averaging hypothesis that a universe looks like a FL model in spite of small-scale fluctuations of density field, if its averaged density field is homogeneous on large scales.
We cut and paste two Banados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) spacetimes at a throat by the Darmois-Israel method to construct a rotating wormhole with a thin shell filled with a barotropic fluid. The thin shell at the throat and both sides of the throat corotate. We investigate the linear stability of the thin shell of the rotating wormhole against radial perturbations. We show that the wormhole becomes more and more stable the larger its angular momentum is until the angular momentum reaches a critical value and that the behavior of a condition for stability significantly changes when the angular mo…
The gravitational collapse of a thick cylindrical shell of dust matter is investigated. It is found that a spacetime singularity forms on the symmetry axis and that it is necessarily naked, i.e., observable in principle. We propose a physically reasonable boundary condition at this naked singularity to construct the solution including its causal future. This boundary condition enables us to construct the unique continuation of spacetime beyond the naked singularity and ensures that the dust shell passes through the naked singularity. When the cylindrical shell leaves its symmetry axis away, th…

We analytically study the non-linear stability of a spherically symmetric wormhole supported by an infinitesimally thin brane of negative tension, which has been devised by Barcelo and Visser. We consider a situation in which a thin spherical shell composed of dust falls into an initially static wormhole; The dust shell plays a role of the non-linear disturbance. The self-gravity of the falling dust shell is completely taken into account through Israel's formalism of the metric junction. When the dust shell goes through the wormhole, it necessarily collides with the brane supporting the wormho…
The equation of motion announced in the title was already deduced for the cases the inner metric being flat and the shell being negligibly small (test matter), using surface layers and geodesic trajectories resp. Here we derive the general equation of motion and solve it in closed form for the case of parabolic motion. Especially the motion near the horizon and near the singularity are examined.
The relation between the angular diameter distance and redshift in a spherically symmetric dust-shell universe is studied. We have discovered that the relation agrees with that of an appropriate Friedmann-Lemaitre (FL) model if we set a ``homogeneous'' expansion law and a ``homogeneous'' averaged density field. This will support the averaging hypothesis that a universe looks like a FL model in spite of small-scale fluctuations of density field, if its averaged density field is homogeneous on large scales. We also study the connection of the proper mass of a shell with the mass of gravitational…
In this paper we will examine the consequence of a canonical theory of quantum dust collapse in 2+1 dimensions. The solution of the WDW equation describing the collapse indicates that collapsing shells outside the apparent horizon are accompanied by outgoing shells within the apparent horizon during their collapse phase and stop collapsing once they reach the apparent horizon. Taking this picture of quantum collapse seriously, we determine a static solution with energy density corresponding to a dust ball whose collapse has terminated at the apparent horizon. We show that the boundary radius o…
In the action-complexity proposal there are two different methods to regularize the gravitational on-shell action, which are equivalent in the framework of AdS/CFT. In this paper, we want to study the equivalence of them for a pure BTZ black hole microstate. The microstate is obtained from a two-sided BTZ black hole truncated by a dynamical timelike ETW brane. Moreover, it is dual to a finite energy pure state in a two-dimensional CFT. We show that if one includes the timelike counterterms inspired by holographic renormalization as well as the Gibbons-Hawking-York term on the timelike boundary…
In the case of crossing thin dust shells the momentum conservation law is found. For two crossing isotropic shells it coincides with the 't Hooft-Dray formula. The system of one isotropic and one time-like shell is considered. In this case we found a very simple formula which relate velocities of dust shell before and after crossing.
The quasi-spherical Szekeres dust solutions are a generalization of the spherically symmetric Lemaitre-Tolman-Bondi dust models where the spherical shells of constant mass are non-concentric. The quasi-spherical Szekeres dust solutions can be considered as cosmological models and are potentially models for the formation of primordial black holes in the early universe. Any collapsing quasi-spherical Szekeres dust solution where an apparent horizon covers all shell-crossings that will occur can be considered as a model for the formation of a black hole. In this paper we will show that the appare…
In a recent paper, one of us studied spherically symmetric, asymptotically flat solutions of Shape Dynamics, finding that the spatial metric has characteristics of a wormhole - two asymptotically flat ends and a minimal-area sphere, or `throat', in between. In this paper we investigate whether that solution can emerge as a result of gravitational collapse of matter. With this goal, we study the simplest kind of spherically-symmetric matter: an infinitely-thin shell of dust. Our system can be understood as a model of a star accreting a thin layer of matter. We solve the dynamics of the shell ex…
We perform a Hamiltonian reduction of spherically symmetric Einstein gravity with a thin dust shell of positive rest mass. Three spatial topologies are considered: Euclidean (R^3), Kruskal (S^2 x R), and the spatial topology of a diametrically identified Kruskal (RP^3 - {a point at infinity}). For the Kruskal and RP^3 topologies the reduced phase space is four-dimensional, with one canonical pair associated with the shell and the other with the geometry; the latter pair disappears if one prescribes the value of the Schwarzschild mass at an asymptopia or at a throat. For the Euclidean topology …
We perform canonical analysis of a model in which gravity is coupled to a spherically symmetric dust shell in 2+1 spacetime dimensions. The result is a reduced action depending on a finite number of degrees of freedom. The emphasis is made on finding canonical variables providing the global chart for the entire phase space of the model. It turns out that all the distinct pieces of momentum space could be assembled into a single manifold which has ADS^{2}-geometry, and the global chart for it is provided by the Euler angles. This results in both non-commutativity and discreteness in coordinate …
I present the first analytical study of gravitational collapse in a compact CMC foliation with $S^3$ spatial topology. The solutions I find, in this context, will be both solutions of Shape Dynamics and General Relativity. The aim is to describe a system undergoing gravitational collapse in Shape Dynamics, so a well-justified and useful simplification is to assume spherical symmetry. This kills all the local gravitational degrees of freedom, but some nontrivial degrees of freedom are recovered by introducing matter. The simplest form of matter is infinitely thin spherical shells of dust, of wh…
We investigate quantum dynamics of self-gravitating spherical dust shell. The wave functions of discrete spectrum are not localized inside the Schwarzschild radius. We argue that such shells can transform into white holes (in another space). It is plausible that shells with bare masses larger than the Planck mass loose their mass emitting lighter shells.
As a preparation for the dynamical investigations, this paper begins with a short review of the three-layer gravastar model with distinguished attention to the structure of the pertinent parameter space of gravastars in equilibrium. Then the radial stability of these types of gravastars is studied by determining their response for the totally inelastic collision of their surface layer with a dust shell. It is assumed that the dominant energy condition holds and the speed of sound does not exceed that of the light in the matter of the surface layer. While in the analytic setup the equation of s…
We numerically study the dynamics of an imploding hollow cylinder composed of dust. Since there is no cylindrical black hole in 4-dimensional spacetime with physically reasonable energy conditions, a collapsed dust cylinder involves a naked singularity accompanied by its causal future, or a fatal singularity which terminates the history of the whole universe. In a previous paper, the present authors have shown that if the dust is assumed to be composed of collisionless particles such that these particles go through the symmetry axis of the cylinder, then the scalar polynomial singularity forme…
We consider the Hamiltonian dynamics of spherically symmetric Einstein gravity with a thin null-dust shell, under boundary conditions that fix the evolution of the spatial hypersurfaces at the two asymptotically flat infinities of a Kruskal-like manifold. The constraints are eliminated via a Kuchar-type canonical transformation and Hamiltonian reduction. The reduced phase space $\tildeΓ$ consists of two disconnected copies of $R^4$, each associated with one direction of the shell motion. The right-moving and left-moving test shell limits can be attached to the respective components of $\tildeΓ…
Firstly, we review the pointwise and averaged energy conditions, the quantum inequality and the notion of the ``volume integral quantifier'', which provides a measure of the ``total amount'' of energy condition violating matter. Secondly, we present a specific metric of a spherically symmetric traversable wormhole in the presence of a generic cosmological constant, verifying that the null and the averaged null energy conditions are violated, as was to be expected. Thirdly, a pressureless dust shell is constructed around the interior wormhole spacetime by matching the latter geometry to a uniqu…
