Collinear laser spectroscopy has been performed on the $^{79}_{30}$Zn$_{49}$ isotope at ISOLDE-CERN. The existence of a long-lived isomer with a few hundred milliseconds half-life was confirmed, and the nuclear spins and moments of the ground and isomeric states in $^{79}$Zn as well as the isomer shift were measured. From the observed hyperfine structures, spins $I = 9/2$ and $I = 1/2$ are firmly assigned to the ground and isomeric states. The magnetic moment $μ$ ($^{79}$Zn) = $-$1.1866(10) $μ_{\rm{N}}$, confirms the spin-parity $9/2^{+}$ with a $νg_{9/2}^{-1}$ shell-model configuration, in excellent agreement with the prediction from large scale shell-model theories. The magnetic moment $μ$ ($^{79m}$Zn) = $-$1.0180(12) $μ_{\rm{N}}$ supports a positive parity for the isomer, with a wave function dominated by a 2h-1p neutron excitation across the $N = 50$ shell gap. The large isomer shift reveals an increase of the intruder isomer mean square charge radius with respect to that of the ground state: $δ\langle r^{2}_{c}\rangle^{79,79m}$ = +0.204(6) fm$^{2}$, providing first evidence of shape coexistence.

A beam containing a substantial component of both the $J^π=5^+$, $T_{1/2}=162$ ns isomeric state of $^{18}$F and its $1^+$, 109.77-min ground state has been utilized to study members of the ground-state rotational band in $^{19}$F through the neutron transfer reaction $(d$,$p)$ in inverse kinematics. The resulting spectroscopic strengths confirm the single-particle nature of the 13/2$^+$ band-terminating state. The agreement between shell-model calculations, using an interaction constructed within the $sd$ shell, and our experimental results reinforces the idea of a single-particle/collective …
Mass measurements of fission and projectile fragments, produced via $^{238}$U and $^{124}$Xe primary beams, have been performed with the multiple-reflection time-of-flight mass spectrometer (MR-TOF-MS) of the FRS Ion Catcher with a mass resolving powers (FWHM) up to 410,000 and an uncertainty of $6\cdot 10^{-8}$. The nuclides were produced and separated in-flight with the fragment separator FRS at 300 to 1000 MeV/u and thermalized in a cryogenic stopping cell. The data-analysis procedure was developed to determine with highest accuracy the mass values and the corresponding uncertainties for th…
Over one hundred years have passed since the nuclear isomer was first introduced, in analogy with chemical isomers to describe long-lived excited nuclear states. In 1921, Otto Hahn discovered the first nuclear isomer $^{234m}$Pa. After that, step by step, it was realized that different types of nuclear isomers exist, including spin isomer, K isomer, seniority isomers, and ``shape and fission'' isomer. The spin isomer occurs when the spin change $ΔI$ of a transition is very large. The larger $ΔI$, the lower the electromagnetic transition rates, the longer the half-lives. The K-isomer exists due…
Metastable states with T$_{1/2}$ = 8(2) ms in $^{205}$Bi and T$_{1/2}$ = 0.22(2) ms in $^{204}$Pb, with $\approx $ 8 MeV excitation energy and angular momentum $\ge $ 22 $\hbar $, have been established. These represent, by up to two orders of magnitude, the longest-lived nuclear states above an excitation energy of 7 MeV, ever identified in the nuclear chart. Additionally, the half-life of the 10.17 MeV state in $^{206}$Bi has been determined to be 0.027(2) ms, the next highest value in this highly excited regime. These observations indicate the emergence of an island of extreme nuclear isomer…
The low energy excited $0_{2,3}^+$ states in $^{96}$Sr are amongst the most prominent examples of shape coexistence across the nuclear landscape. In this work, the neutron $[2s_{1/2}]^2$ content of the $0_{1,2,3}^+$ states in $^{96}$Sr was determined by means of the d($^{95}$Sr,p) transfer reaction at the TRIUMF-ISAC2 facility using the SHARC and TIGRESS arrays. Spectroscopic factors of 0.19(3) and 0.22(3) were extracted for the $^{96}$Sr ground and 1229~keV $0^+$ states, respectively, by fitting the experimental angular distributions to DWBA reaction model calculations. A detailed analysis of…
Isochronous mass spectrometry was applied to measure isomeric yield ratios of fragmentation reaction products. This approach is complementary to conventional gamma-ray spectroscopy in particular for measuring yield ratios for long-lived isomeric states. Isomeric yield ratios for the high-spin I = 19/2 states in the mirror nuclei 53Fe and 53Co are measured to study angular momentum population following the projectile fragmentation of 78Kr at energies of 480A MeV on a beryllium target. The 19/2 state isomeric ratios of 53Fe produced from different projectiles in the literature have also been ext…
Decay spectroscopy of the long-lived states in $^{186}$Tl has been performed at the ISOLDE Decay Station at ISOLDE, CERN. The $α$ decay from the low-spin $(2^-)$ state in $^{186}$Tl was observed for the first time and a half-life of $3.4^{+0.5}_{-0.4}$ s was determined. Based on the $α$-decay energy, the relative positions of the long-lived states were fixed, with the $(2^-)$ state as the ground state, the $7^{(+)}$ state at 77(56)~keV and the $10^{(-)}$ state at 451(56) keV. The level scheme of the internal decay of the $^{186}$Tl($10^{(-)}$) state ($T_{1/2} = 3.40(9)$ s), which was known to …
