Evidence for the existence of a superheavy nucleus with atomic mass number A=292 and abundance (1-10)x10^(-12) relative to 232Th has been found in a study of natural Th using inductively coupled plasma-sector field mass spectrometry. The measured mass matches the predictions [1,2] for the mass of an isotope with atomic number Z=122 or a nearby element. Its estimated half-life of t1/2 >= 10^8 y suggests that a long-lived isomeric state exists in this isotope. The possibility that it might belong to a new class of long-lived high spin super- and hyperdeformed isomeric states is discussed.[3-6]
The recent discoveries of the long-lived high spin super- and hyperdeformed isomeric states and their unusual radioactive decay properties are described. Based on their existence a consistent interpretation is given to the production of the long-lived superheavy element with Z = 112, via secondary reactions in CERN W targets, and to the low energy and very enhanced alpha-particle groups seen in various actinide fractions separated from the same W target. In addition, consistent interpretations are suggested for previously unexplained phenomena seen in nature. These are the Po halos, the low-en…
Evidence for the existence of long-lived isotopes with atomic mass numbers 261 and 265 and abundance of (1-10)x10$^{-10}$ relative to Au has been found in a study of natural Au using an inductively coupled plasma - sector field mass spectrometer. The measured masses fit the predictions made for the masses of $^{261}$Rg and $^{265}$Rg (Z=111) and for some isotopes of nearby elements. The possibility that these isotopes belong to the recently discovered class of long-lived high spin super- and hyperdeformed isomeric states is discussed.
Negative results obtained in AMS searches by Dellinger et al. on mostly unrefined ores have led them to conclude that the very heavy long-lived species found in chemically processed samples with ICP-SFMS by Marinov et al. are artifacts. We argue that it may not be surprising that results obtained from small random samplings of inhomogeneous natural minerals would contrast with concentrations found in homogeneous materials extracted from large quantities of ore. We also point out that it is possible that the groups of counts at masses 296 and 294 seen by Dellinger et al. could be, within experi…
The data collected with a radioactively pure ZnWO$_4$ crystal scintillator (699 g) in low background measurements during 2130 h at the underground (3600 m w.e.) Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (INFN, Italy) were used to set a limit on possible concentration of superheavy eka-W (seaborgium Sg, Z = 106) in the crystal. Assuming that one of the daughters in a chain of decays of the initial Sg nucleus decays with emission of high energy $α$ particle ($Q_α> 8$ MeV) and analyzing the high energy part of the measured $α$ spectrum, the limit N(Sg)/N(W) < 5.5 $\times$ 10$^{-14}$ atoms/atom at 90% C…
Probable projectile-target combinations for the synthesis of superheavy element $^{302}$120 have been studied taking Coulomb and proximity potential as the interaction barrier. The probabilities of compound nucleus formation, PCN for the projectile-target combinations found in the cold reaction valley of $^{302}$120 are estimated. At energies near and above the Coulomb barrier, we have calculated the capture, fusion and evaporation residue cross sections for the reactions of all the probable projectile-target combinations so as to predict the most promising projectile-target combinations for t…
Recently, experimental researches on the $α$ decay with long lifetime are one of hot topics in the contemporary nuclear physics [e.g. N. Kinoshita {\sl et al.} (2012) and J. W. Beeman {\sl et al.} (2012) ]. In this study, we have systematically investigated the extremely long-lived $α$-decaying nuclei within a generalized density-dependent cluster model involving the experimental nuclear charge radii. In detail, the important density distribution of daughter nuclei is deduced from the corresponding experimental charge radii, leading to an improved $α$-core potential in the quantum tunneling ca…
A consistent interpretation is given to some previously unexplained phenomena seen in nature in terms of the recently discovered long-lived high spin super- and hyper-deformed isomeric states. The Po halos seen in mica are interpreted as due to the existence of such isomeric states in corresponding Po or nearby nuclei which eventually decay by gamma- or beta-decay to the ground states of 210Po, 214Po and 218Po nuclei. The low-energy 4.5 MeV alpha-particle group observed in several minerals is interpreted as due to a very enhanced alpha transition from the third minimum of the potential-energy …
Long-lived high-spin super- and hyper-deformed isomeric states, which exhibit themselves by abnormal radioactive decays, have been observed using the 16O + 197Au and 28Si + 181Ta reactions. They make it possible to understand the production, via secondary reactions, of the long-lived superheavy element with Z = 112 and of the abnormally low energy and very enhanced alpha-particle groups seen in various actinide sources. They might also explain some puzzling phenomena seen in nature.
Based on the observation of the long-lived isotopes 261Rg and 265Rg (Z = 111, t(1/2) >= 10^(8) y) in natural Au, an experiment was performed to enrich Rg in 99.999% Au. 16 mg of Au were heated in vacuum for two weeks at a temperature of 1127 deg. C (63 deg. C above the melting point of Au). The content of 197Au and 261Rg in the residue was studied with high resolution inductively coupled plasma-sector field mass spectrometry (ICP-SFMS). The residue of Au was 3x10^(-6) of its original quantity. The recovery of Rg was a few percent. The abundance of Rg compared to Au in the enriched solution was…
Theoretical estimates for the lifetimes of several isotopes of heavy elements with Z=102-120 are presented by calculating the quantum mechanical tunneling probability in a WKB framework and using microscopic nucleus-nucleus potential obtained by folding the densities of interacting nuclei with the DDM3Y effective nuclear interaction. The $α$-decay half lives calculated in this formalism using the experimental $Q$-values are in good agreement over a wide range of experimental data. Half lives are also calculated using $Q$-values extracted from two mass formulae. The Viola-Seaborg-Sobiczewski (V…
Relatively low energy and very enhanced alpha-particle groups have been observed in various actinide fractions produced via secondary reactions in a CERN W target which had been irradiated with 24-GeV protons. In particular, 5.14, 5.27 and 5.53 MeV alpha-particle groups with corresponding half-lives of 3.8(+ -)1.0 y, 625(+ -)84 d and 26(+ -)7 d, have been seen in Bk, Es and Lr-No sources, respectively. The measured energies are a few MeV lower than the known g.s. to g.s. alpha-decays in the corresponding neutron-deficient actinide nuclei. The half-lives are 4 to 7 orders of magnitude shorter t…

We have calculated the binding energy, root-mean-square radius and quadrupole deformation parameter for the recently synthesized superheavy element Z=117, using the axially deformed relativistic mean field (RMF) model. The calculation is extended to various isotopes of Z=117 element, strarting from A=286 till A=310. We predict almost spherical structures in the ground state for almost all the isotopes. A shape transition appears at about A=292 from prolate to a oblate shape structures of Z=117 nucleus in our mean field approach. The most stable isotope (largest binding energy per nucleon) is f…
The concept of compound nucleus was proposed by Niels Bohr in 1936 to explain narrow resonances observed in scattering of a slow neutron off atomic nuclei. A compound nucleus is a metastable state with a long lifetime, in which all the degrees of freedom are in a sort of thermal equilibrium. Fusion reactions are defined as reactions to form such compound nucleus by merging two atomic nuclei. Here a short description of heavy-ion fusion reactions at energies close the Coulomb barrier is presented. This includes: (i) an overview of a fusion process, (ii) a strong interplay between nuclear struct…
The decay of odd-odd $^{150}$Pm has been studied by populating the nucleus with the $^{150}$Nd(p,n)$^{150}$Pm reaction at E$_{beam}$ = 8.0 MeV using 97$\%$ enriched $^{150}$Nd target. The presence of an isomeric state with $β$ decay half life of 2.2(1) h could be identified in $^{150}$Pm by following the half lives of the observed $γ$ transitions. The decay of the isomer to the excited levels of $^{150}$Sm has been confirmed by observing the $γ- γ$ coincidence with the VENUS array of six Compton suppressed Clover HPGe detectors. The $β$ decay end-point energies corresponding to the decay from …
We present the first laser spectroscopic measurement of the neutron-rich nucleus $^{68}$Ni at the \mbox{$N=40$} subshell closure and extract its nuclear charge radius. Since this is the only short-lived isotope for which the dipole polarizability $α_{\rm D}$ has been measured, the combination of these observables provides a benchmark for nuclear structure theory. We compare them to novel coupled-cluster calculations based on different chiral two- and three-nucleon interactions, for which a strong correlation between the charge radius and dipole polarizability is observed, similar to the stable…
The level density of quantum states in statistical mesoscopic systems is a critical input for various fields of physics, including nuclear physics, nuclear astrophysics, atomic physics and their applications. In atomic nuclei, the level density is a fundamental measure of their complex structure at relatively high energies. Here we present the first model-independent measurement of the absolute partial nuclear level density for a short-lived unstable nucleus. For this purpose, we introduce the ``Shape method'' to extract the shape of the $γ$-ray strength function. Combining the Shape method wi…
Recently long-lived high spin super- and hyperdeformed isomeric states with unusual radioactive decay properties have been discovered. Based on these newly observed modes of radioactive decay, consistent interpretations are suggested for previously unexplained phenomena seen in nature. These are the Po halos, the low-energy enhanced 4.5 MeV alpha-particle group proposed to be due to an isotope of a superheavy element with Z = 108, and the giant halos.
In this letter, we report a new mass for $^{11}$Li using the trapping experiment TITAN at TRIUMF's ISAC facility. This is by far the shortest-lived nuclide, $t_{1/2} = 8.8 \rm{ms}$, for which a mass measurement has ever been performed with a Penning trap. Combined with our mass measurements of $^{8,9}$Li we derive a new two-neutron separation energy of 369.15(65) keV: a factor of seven more precise than the best previous value. This new value is a critical ingredient for the determination of the halo charge radius from isotope-shift measurements. We also report results from state-of-the-art at…
We determine for the first time the magnetic dipole moment of a short-lived nucleus with part-per-million (ppm) accuracy. To achieve this two orders of magnitude improvement over previous studies, we implement a number of innovations into our $β$-detected Nuclear Magnetic Resonance ($β$-NMR) setup at ISOLDE/CERN. Using liquid samples as hosts we obtain narrow, sub-kHz linewidth, resonances, while a simultaneous in-situ $^1$H NMR measurement allows us to calibrate and stabilize the magnetic field to ppm precision, thus eliminating the need for additional $β$-NMR reference measurements. Furtherm…
The existence of long lived superheavy nuclei (SHN) is controlled mainly by spontaneous fission and $α$-decay processes. According to microscopic nuclear theory, spherical shell effects at Z=114, 120, 126 and N=184 provide the extra stability to such SHN to have long enough lifetime to be observed. To investigate whether the so-called "stability island" could really exist around the above Z, N values, the $α$-decay half lives along with the spontaneous fission and $β$-decay half lives of such nuclei are studied. The $α$-decay half lives of SHN with Z=102-120 are calculated in a quantum tunneli…
The structure of collective states and quasi-particle excitations in $^{68}$Se is analyzed by using the projected shell model. It is found that the $g_{9/2}$ orbitals play a decisive role for the structure of this nucleus. At the prolate minimum, alignment of the low-K states causes the observed first backbending in moment of inertia and we predict a second backbending that has not yet been reported. At the oblate minimum, quasi-particles having high-K can form long-lived isomeric states. The structure of $^{68}$Se is discussed with respect to the isomers and their possible impact on the deter…
We formulate criteria for identification of the nuclear tetrahedral and octahedral symmetries and illustrate for the first time their possible realization in a Rare Earth nucleus 152Sm. We use realistic nuclear mean-field theory calculations with the phenomenological macroscopic-microscopic method, the Gogny-Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov approach and the general point-group theory considerations to guide the experimental identification method as illustrated on published experimental data. Following group-theory the examined symmetries imply the existence of exotic rotational bands on whose propertie…
