We present a method for jointly predicting a depth map and intrinsic images from single-image input. The two tasks are formulated in a synergistic manner through a joint conditional random field (CRF) that is solved using a novel convolutional neural network (CNN) architecture, called the joint convolutional neural field (JCNF) model. Tailored to our joint estimation problem, JCNF differs from previous CNNs in its sharing of convolutional activations and layers between networks for each task, its inference in the gradient domain where there exists greater correlation between depth and intrinsic images, and the incorporation of a gradient scale network that learns the confidence of estimated gradients in order to effectively balance them in the solution. This approach is shown to surpass state-of-the-art methods both on single-image depth estimation and on intrinsic image decomposition.

We introduce a novel method to obtain high-quality 3D reconstructions from consumer RGB-D sensors. Our core idea is to simultaneously optimize for geometry encoded in a signed distance field (SDF), textures from automatically-selected keyframes, and their camera poses along with material and scene lighting. To this end, we propose a joint surface reconstruction approach that is based on Shape-from-Shading (SfS) techniques and utilizes the estimation of spatially-varying spherical harmonics (SVSH) from subvolumes of the reconstructed scene. Through extensive examples and evaluations, we demonst…
3D object recognition has attracted wide research attention in the field of multimedia and computer vision. With the recent proliferation of deep learning, various deep models with different representations have achieved the state-of-the-art performance. Among them, point cloud and multi-view based 3D shape representations are promising recently, and their corresponding deep models have shown significant performance on 3D shape recognition. However, there is little effort concentrating point cloud data and multi-view data for 3D shape representation, which is, in our consideration, beneficial …
We introduce a new approach to intrinsic image decomposition, the task of decomposing a single image into albedo and shading components. Our strategy, which we term direct intrinsics, is to learn a convolutional neural network (CNN) that directly predicts output albedo and shading channels from an input RGB image patch. Direct intrinsics is a departure from classical techniques for intrinsic image decomposition, which typically rely on physically-motivated priors and graph-based inference algorithms. The large-scale synthetic ground-truth of the MPI Sintel dataset plays a key role in training …
This paper proposes a new hybrid architecture that consists of a deep Convolutional Network and a Markov Random Field. We show how this architecture is successfully applied to the challenging problem of articulated human pose estimation in monocular images. The architecture can exploit structural domain constraints such as geometric relationships between body joint locations. We show that joint training of these two model paradigms improves performance and allows us to significantly outperform existing state-of-the-art techniques.

Hand pose estimation from monocular depth images has been an important and challenging problem in the Computer Vision community. In this paper, we present a novel approach to estimate 3D hand joint locations from 2D depth images. Unlike most of the previous methods, our model captures the 3D spatial information from a depth image thereby giving it a greater understanding of the input. We voxelize the input depth map to capture the 3D features of the input and perform 3D data augmentations to make our network robust to real-world images. Our network is trained in an end-to-end manner which redu…

Three dimensional convolutional neural networks (3D CNNs) have been established as a powerful tool to simultaneously learn features from both spatial and temporal dimensions, which is suitable to be applied to video-based action recognition. In this work, we propose not to directly use the activations of fully-connected layers of a 3D CNN as the video feature, but to use selective convolutional layer activations to form a discriminative descriptor for video. It pools the feature on the convolutional layers under the guidance of body joint positions. Two schemes of mapping body joints into conv…
This paper introduces a new approach to automatically quantify the severity of knee OA using X-ray images. We introduce a new approach to automatically detect the knee joints using a fully convolutional neural network (FCN). We train convolutional neural networks (CNN) from scratch to automatically quantify the knee OA severity optimizing a weighted ratio of two loss functions: categorical cross-entropy and mean-squared loss. Existing techniques to encode spatial invariance within deep convolutional neural networks only model 2D transformation fields. This does not account for the fact that objects in a 2D space are a projection of 3D ones, and thus they have limited ability to severe object viewpoint changes. To overcome this limitation, we introduce a learnable module, cylindrical convolutional networks (CCNs), that exploit cylindrical representation of a convolutional kernel defined in the 3D space. CCNs extract a view-specific feature through a view-specific convolutional kernel to predict object category score…

Motivation: Recognizing human actions in a video is a challenging task which has applications in various fields. Previous works in this area have either used images from a 2D or 3D camera. Few have used the idea that human actions can be easily identified by the movement of the joints in the 3D space and instead used a Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) for modeling. Convolutional neural networks (CNN) have the ability to recognise even the complex patterns in data which makes it suitable for detecting human actions. Thus, we modeled a CNN which can predict the human activity using the joint data.…
The topic of semantic segmentation has witnessed considerable progress due to the powerful features learned by convolutional neural networks (CNNs). The current leading approaches for semantic segmentation exploit shape information by extracting CNN features from masked image regions. This strategy introduces artificial boundaries on the images and may impact the quality of the extracted features. Besides, the operations on the raw image domain require to compute thousands of networks on a single image, which is time-consuming. In this paper, we propose to exploit shape information via masking…

Joint image filters leverage the guidance image as a prior and transfer the structural details from the guidance image to the target image for suppressing noise or enhancing spatial resolution. Existing methods either rely on various explicit filter constructions or hand-designed objective functions, thereby making it difficult to understand, improve, and accelerate these filters in a coherent framework. In this paper, we propose a learning-based approach for constructing joint filters based on Convolutional Neural Networks. In contrast to existing methods that consider only the guidance image…
In recent years, graph convolutional networks (GCNs) play an increasingly critical role in skeleton-based human action recognition. However, most GCN-based methods still have two main limitations: 1) They only consider the motion information of the joints or process the joints and bones separately, which are unable to fully explore the latent functional correlation between joints and bones for action recognition. 2) Most of these works are performed in the supervised learning way, which heavily relies on massive labeled training data. To address these issues, we propose a semi-supervised skele…

State-of-the-art person re-identification systems that employ a triplet based deep network suffer from a poor generalization capability. In this paper, we propose a four stream Siamese deep convolutional neural network for person redetection that jointly optimises verification and identification losses over a four image input group. Recently, 3DMMs were used as generative models for training non-linear mappings (\ie, regressors) from image to the parameters of the models via Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (DCNNs). When approaching a novel visual recognition problem in a specialized image domain, a common strategy is to start with a pre-trained deep neural network and fine-tune it to the specialized domain. If the target domain covers a smaller visual space than the source domain used for pre-training (e.g. ImageNet), the fine-tuned network is likely to be over-parameterized. However, applying network pruning as a post-processing step to reduce the memory requirements has drawbacks: fine-tuning and pruning are performed independently; pruning parameters are set once and cannot adapt over time; and the hi…

When performing data classification over a stream of continuously occurring instances, a key challenge is to develop an open-world classifier that anticipates instances from an unknown class. Studies addressing this problem, typically called novel class detection, have considered classification methods that reactively adapt to such changes along the stream. Instances belonging to the same class are assumed to be closer to each other (cohesion) than those belonging to different classes (separatio…
