Existing techniques to encode spatial invariance within deep convolutional neural networks only model 2D transformation fields. This does not account for the fact that objects in a 2D space are a projection of 3D ones, and thus they have limited ability to severe object viewpoint changes. To overcome this limitation, we introduce a learnable module, cylindrical convolutional networks (CCNs), that exploit cylindrical representation of a convolutional kernel defined in the 3D space. CCNs extract a view-specific feature through a view-specific convolutional kernel to predict object category scores at each viewpoint. With the view-specific feature, we simultaneously determine objective category and viewpoints using the proposed sinusoidal soft-argmax module. Our experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the cylindrical convolutional networks on joint object detection and viewpoint estimation.
In this paper, we propose a novel technique for sampling sequential images using a cylindrical transform in a cylindrical coordinate system for kidney semantic segmentation in abdominal computed tomography (CT). The images generated from a cylindrical transform augment a limited annotated set of images in three dimensions. This approach enables us to train contemporary classification deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs) instead of fully convolutional networks (FCNs) for semantic segmentation. Typical semantic segmentation models segment a sequential set of images (e.g. CT or video) by se…
Visual defect detection (VDD) for high-mix low-volume production of non-convex metal objects, such as high-pressure cylindrical piping joint parts (VDD-HPPPs), is challenging because subtle difference in domain (e.g., metal objects, imaging device, viewpoints, lighting) significantly affects the specular reflection characteristics of individual metal object types. In this paper, we address this issue by introducing a tailor-made VDD framework that can be automatically adapted to a new domain. Specifically, we formulate this adaptation task as the problem of network architecture search (NAS) on…

A critical challenge problem of scene change detection is that noisy changes generated by varying illumination, shadows and camera viewpoint make variances of a scene difficult to define and measure since the noisy changes and semantic ones are entangled. Following the intuitive idea of detecting changes by directly comparing dissimilarities between a pair of features, we propose a novel fully Convolutional siamese metric Network(CosimNet) to measure changes by customizing implicit metrics. To learn more discriminative metrics, we utilize contrastive loss to reduce the distance between the unc…
We propose a viewpoint invariant model for 3D human pose estimation from a single depth image. To achieve this, our discriminative model embeds local regions into a learned viewpoint invariant feature space. Formulated as a multi-task learning problem, our model is able to selectively predict partial poses in the presence of noise and occlusion. Our approach leverages a convolutional and recurrent network architecture with a top-down error feedback mechanism to self-correct previous pose estimates in an end-to-end manner. We evaluate our model on a previously published depth dataset and a newl…
The estimation of viewpoints and keypoints effectively enhance object detection methods by extracting valuable traits of the object instances. While the output of both processes differ, i.e., angles vs. list of characteristic points, they indeed share the same focus on how the object is placed in the scene, inducing that there is a certain level of correlation between them. Therefore, we propose a convolutional neural network that jointly computes the viewpoint and keypoints for different object categories. By training both tasks together, each task improves the accuracy of the other. Since th…
In this paper we study the application of convolutional neural networks for jointly detecting objects depicted in still images and estimating their 3D pose. We identify different feature representations of oriented objects, and energies that lead a network to learn this representations. The choice of the representation is crucial since the pose of an object has a natural, continuous structure while its category is a discrete variable. We evaluate the different approaches on the joint object detection and pose estimation task of the Pascal3D+ benchmark using Average Viewpoint Precision. We show…

This paper presents a novel method for detecting scene changes from a pair of images with a difference of camera viewpoints using a dense optical flow based change detection network. In the case that camera poses of input images are fixed or known, such as with surveillance and satellite cameras, the pixel correspondence between the images captured at different times can be known. Hence, it is possible to comparatively accurately detect scene changes between the images by modeling the appearance of the scene. On the other hand, in case of cameras mounted on a moving object, such as ground and …
This paper addresses the problem of change detection from a novel perspective of long-term map learning. We are particularly interested in designing an approach that can scale to large maps and that can function under global uncertainty in the viewpoint (i.e., GPS-denied situations). Our approach, which utilizes a compact bag-of-words (BoW) scene model, makes several contributions to the problem: 1) Two kinds of prior information are extracted from the view sequence map and used for change detection. Further, we propose a novel type of prior, called motion prior, to predict the relative motion…
With the rapid progress of deep convolutional neural networks, in almost all robotic applications, the availability of 3D point clouds improves the accuracy of 3D semantic segmentation methods. Rendering of these irregular, unstructured, and unordered 3D points to 2D images from multiple viewpoints imposes some issues such as loss of information due to 3D to 2D projection, discretizing artifacts, and high computational costs. To efficiently deal with a large number of points and incorporate more context of each point, a pointwise attention-based atrous convolutional neural network architecture…
The task of human pose estimation (HPE) deals with the ill-posed problem of estimating the 3D position of human joints directly from images and videos. In recent literature, most of the works tackle the problem mostly by using convolutional neural networks (CNNs), which are capable of achieving state-of-the-art results in most datasets. We show how most neural networks are not able to generalize well when the camera is subject to significant viewpoint changes. This behaviour emerges because CNNs lack the capability of modelling viewpoint equivariance, while they rather rely on viewpoint invari…

We propose to combine recent Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) models with depth imaging to obtain a reliable and fast multi-person pose estimation algorithm applicable to Human Robot Interaction (HRI) scenarios. Our hypothesis is that depth images contain less structures and are easier to process than RGB images while keeping the required information for human detection and pose inference, thus allowing the use of simpler networks for the task. Our contributions are threefold. (i) we propose a fast and efficient network based on residual blocks (called RPM) for body landmark localization fr…
In the recent years, public use of artistic effects for editing and beautifying images has encouraged researchers to look for new approaches to this task. Most of the existing methods apply artistic effects to the whole image. Exploitation of neural network vision technologies like object detection and semantic segmentation could be a new viewpoint in this area. In this paper, we utilize an instance segmentation neural network to obtain a class mask for separately filtering the background and foreground of an image. We implement a top prior-mask selection to let us select an object class for f…
Computer vision systems in real-world applications need to be robust to partial occlusion while also being explainable. In this work, we show that black-box deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs) have only limited robustness to partial occlusion. We overcome these limitations by unifying DCNNs with part-based models into Compositional Convolutional Neural Networks (CompositionalNets) - an interpretable deep architecture with innate robustness to partial occlusion. Specifically, we propose to replace the fully connected classification head of DCNNs with a differentiable compositional model …
Standard methods for video recognition use large CNNs designed to capture spatio-temporal data. However, training these models requires a large amount of labeled training data, containing a wide variety of actions, scenes, settings and camera viewpoints. In this paper, we show that current convolutional neural network models are unable to recognize actions from camera viewpoints not present in their training data (i.e., unseen view action recognition). To address this, we develop approaches based on 3D representations and introduce a new geometric convolutional layer that can learn viewpoint i…
Human visual scene understanding is so remarkable that we are able to recognize a revisited place when entering it from the opposite direction it was first visited, even in the presence of extreme variations in appearance. This capability is especially apparent during driving: a human driver can recognize where they are when travelling in the reverse direction along a route for the first time, without having to turn back and look. The difficulty of this problem exceeds any addressed in past appearance- and viewpoint-invariant visual place recognition (VPR) research, in part because large parts…

Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) are empirically known to be invariant to moderate translation but not to rotation in image classification. This paper proposes a deep CNN model, called CyCNN, which exploits polar mapping of input images to convert rotation to translation. To deal with the cylindrical property of the polar coordinates, we replace convolution layers in conventional CNNs to cylindrical convolutional (CyConv) layers. A CyConv layer exploits the cylindrically sliding windows (CSW) mechanism that vertically extends the input-image receptive fields of boundary units in a con…

Here, humans and a DCNN performed a challenging face-identity matching task that included identical twins. Participants (N=87) viewed pairs of face images of three types: same-identity, general imposter pairs (different identities from similar demographic groups), and twin imposter pairs (identical twin siblings). We use Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (DCNNs) for image segmentation problems. DCNNs can well extract the features from natural images. However, the classification functions in the existing network architecture of CNNs are simple and lack capabilities to handle important spatial information in a way that have been done for many well-known traditional variational models. Prior such as spatial regularity, volume prior and object shapes cannot be well handled by existing DCNNs. We propose a novel Soft Threshold Dynamics (STD) framework which can easily integrate many spatial priors of the cla…

We characterize the problem of pose estimation for rigid objects in terms of determining viewpoint to explain coarse pose and keypoint prediction to capture the finer details. This opens up the possibility of high-end volumetric performance capture in on-se…

The scattering transform is a kind of convolutional network which provides a powerful multi-layer representation for signals. After extraction of scattering features, PCA is applied to…

We propose a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN)-based model "RotationNet," which takes multi-view images of an object as input and jointly estimates its pose and object category. Many computer vision challenges require continuous outputs, but tend to be solved by discrete classification. The reason is classification's natural containment within a probability $n$-simplex, as defined by the popular softmax activation function. Regular regression lacks such a closed geometry, leading to unstable training and convergence to suboptimal local minima. Starting from this insight we revisit regression in convolutional neural networks. We observe many continuous output problems in computer vision are naturally contained in closed geometrical manifolds, like the Euler angles in v…
