We investigate how confining a transverse spatial dimension influences the few- and many-body properties of non-relativistic bosons with pointlike interactions. Our main focus is on the dimensional crossover from three to two dimensions, which is of relevance for ultracold atom experiments. Using Functional Renormalization Group equations and T-matrix calculations we study how the phase transition temperature changes as a function of the spatial extent of the transverse dimension and relate the 3D and 2D s-wave scattering lengths. The analysis reveals how the properties of the lower-dimensional system are inherited from the higher-dimensional one during the renormalization group evolution. We limit the discussion to confinements in a potential well with periodic boundary conditions and argue why this qualitatively captures the physics of other compactifications such as transverse harmonic confinement as in cold atom experiments.
The thermodynamic properties of a nonrelativistic free-electron Fermi gas is of fundamental interest in condensed matter physics. Properties previously studied in three-dimensions (3D) in the low- and high-temperature limits include the internal energy, heat capacity, zero-field magnetic spin susceptibility, and pressure. Here we report solutions for the temperature dependence spanning these two temperature regimes of the chemical potential, internal energy, magnetic susceptibility, and the heat capacity at constant volume in 1D, 2D, and 3D. Also calculated are the pressure, enthalpy, heat cap…
We regulate in Euclidean space the Jacobian under scale transformations for two-dimensional nonrelativistic fermions and bosons interacting via contact interactions and compare the resulting scaling anomalies. For fermions, Grassmannian integration inverts the Jacobian: however, this effect is cancelled by the regularization procedure and a result similar to that of bosons is attained. We show the independence of the result with respect to the regulating function, and show the robustness of our methods by comparing the procedure with an effective potential method using both cutoff and $ζ$-func…
In this paper, we revise our main results involving the single particle momentum distribution of bosonic trimer states in two and three dimensions. A summary table makes easier the comparison between the matrix elements and the different terms of the momentum distributions. We also show a practical method to continuously interpolate between different dimensions.
We briefly discuss recent experiments on the BCS-BEC crossover with ultracold alkali-metal atoms both in three-dimensional configurations and two-dimensional ones. Then we analyze the quantum-field-theory formalism used to describe an attractive $D$-dimensional Fermi gas taking into account Gaussian fluctuations. Finally, we apply this formalism to obtain a reliable equation of state of the 2D system at low temperaratures in the BEC regime of the crossover by performing a meaningful dimensional regularization of the divergent zero-point energy of collective bosonic excitations.
We study the zero-temperature grand potential of a three-dimensional superfluid made of ultracold fermionic alkali-metal atoms in the BCS-BEC crossover. In particular, we analyze the zero-point energy of both fermionic single-particle excitations and bosonic collective excitations. The bosonic elementary excitations, which are crucial to obtain a reliable equation of state in the BEC regime, are obtained with a low-momentum expansion up to the forth order of the quadratic (Gaussian) action of the fluctuating pairing field. By performing a cutoff regularization and renormalization of Gaussian f…
We propose a simple bose-fermi model in two dimensions, with a coupling that converts pairs of opposite spin fermions into localized bosons and vice versa. We show that tracing out one of the degrees, either the bosons or fermions, generates temperature-dependent long range effective interactions between bosons as well as effective attractive interactions between fermions. Using Monte Carlo techniques we obtain the thermodynamic properties and phase stiffness as a function of temperature, dominated by vortex-antivortex unbinding of the bosons. Remarkably in the fermion sector we observe a temp…
We have studied the effects of Lorentz-violation in the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of an ideal boson gas, by assessing both the nonrelativistic and ultrarelativistic limits. Our model describes a massive complex scalar field coupled to a CPT-even and Lorentz-violating background. We irst analyze the nonrelativistic case, at this level by using experimental data, we obtain upper-bounds for some LIV parameters. In the sequel, we have constructed the partition function for the relativistic ideal boson gas which to be able of a consistent description requires the imposition of severe restric…
We study Gaussian fluctuations of the zero-temperature attractive Fermi gas in the 2D BCS-BEC crossover showing that they are crucial to get a reliable equation of state in the BEC regime of composite bosons, bound states of fermionic pairs. A low-momentum expansion up to the fourth order of the quadratic action of the fluctuating pairing field gives an ultraviolent divergent contribution of the Gaussian fluctuations to the grand potential. Performing dimensional regularization we evaluate the effective coupling constant in the beyond-mean-field grand potential. Remarkably, in the BEC regime o…
The generalized multispin Jahn-Teller model on a finite lattice or formally equivalent Dicke model extended to two long-wavelength coherent bosons of different frequencies is shown to exhibit a crossover between the polaron-modified "quasi-normal" and the squeezed "radiation" domains. We investigate effects of two kinds of interfering fluctuations on the phase crossover and on statistical characteristics of boson complex spectra: (i) Fluctuations in the electron subsystem- finite-size quantum fluctuations- are responsible for the dephasing of the coherence in the radiation domain and for the m…
The spectrum and properties of quantum bound states is strongly dependent on the dimensionality of space. How this comes about and how one may theoretically and experimentally study the interpolation between different dimensions is a topic of great interest in different fields of physics. In this paper we study weakly bound states of non-relativistic two and three boson systems when passing continuously from a three (3D) to a two-dimensional (2D) regime within a 'squeezed dimension' model. We use periodic boundary conditions to derive a surprisingly simple form of the three-boson Schr{ö}dinger…
For an ideal Bose-gas within a multi-slabs periodic structure, we report a dimensional crossover and discuss whether a BEC transition at $T_c \neq 0$ disappears or not. The multi-slabs structure is generated via a Kronig-Penney potential perpendicular to the slabs of width $a$ and separated by a distance $b$. The ability of the particles to jump between adjacent slabs is determined by the hight $V_0$ and width $b$ of the potential barrier. Contrary to what happens in the boson gas inside a zero-width multilayers case, where the critical temperature diminishes and goes up again as a function of…
We show that a two-component mixture of a few repulsively interacting ultracold atoms in a one-dimensional trap possesses very different quantum regimes and that the crossover between them can be induced by tuning the interactions in one of the species. In the composite fermionization regime, where the interactions between both components are large, none of the species show large occupation of any natural orbital. Our results show that by increasing the interaction in one of the species, one can reach the phase-separated regime. In this regime, the weakly interacting component stays at the cen…
We investigate the formation of self-bound quantum droplets in a one-dimensional binary mixture of bosonic atoms, applying the method of numerical diagonalization of the full Hamiltonian. The excitation spectra and ground-state pair correlations signal the formation of a few-boson droplet when crossing the region of critical inter-species interactions. The self-binding affects the rotational excitations, displaying a change in the energy dispersion from negative curvature, associated with superfluidity in the many-body limit, to a nearly parabolic curvature indicative of rigid body rotation. W…
We obtain the thermodynamic properties for a non-interacting Bose gas constrained on multilayers modeled by a periodic Kronig-Penney delta potential in one direction and allowed to be free in the other two directions. We report Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) critical temperatures, chemical potential, internal energy, specific heat, and entropy for different values of a dimensionless impenetrability $P\geqslant 0$ between layers. The BEC critical temperature $T_{c}$ coincides with the ideal gas BEC critical temperature $T_{0}$ when $P=0$ and rapidly goes to zero as $P$ increases to infinity f…
Strongly interacting many-body system of bosons exhibiting the quantum carpet pattern is investigated exactly by using Gaudin solutions. We show that this highly coherent design usually present in noninteracting, single-body scenarios gets destroyed by weak-to-moderate interatomic interactions in an ultracold bosonic gas trapped in a box potential. However, it becomes revived in a very strongly interacting regime, when the system undergoes fermionization. We track the whole single- to many-body crossover, providing an analysis of de- and rephasing present in the system.
We study ultra-cold bosons out of equilibrium in a one-dimensional (1D) setting and probe the breaking of integrability and the resulting relaxation at the onset of the crossover from one to three dimensions. In a quantum Newton's cradle type experiment, we excite the atoms to oscillate and collide in an array of 1D tubes and observe the evolution for up to 4.8 seconds (400 oscillations) with minimal heating and loss. By investigating the dynamics of the longitudinal momentum distribution function and the transverse excitation, we observe and quantify a two-stage relaxation process. In the ini…
Ultradilute quantum droplets are intriguing new state of matter, in which the attractive mean-field force can be balanced by the repulsive force from quantum fluctuations to avoid collapse. Here, we present a microscopic theory of ultradilute quantum droplets in three-, one- and two-dimensional two-component Bose-Bose mixtures, by generalizing the conventional Bogoliubov theory to include the bosonic pairing arising from the interspecies attraction. Our pairing theory is fully equivalent to a variational approach and hence gives an upper bound for the energy of quantum droplets. In three dimen…
I derive a loop representation for the canonical and grand-canonical partition functions for an interacting four-component Fermi gas in one spatial dimension and an arbitrary external potential. The representation is free of the "sign problem" irrespective of population imbalance, mass imbalance, and to a degree, sign of the interaction strength. This property is in sharp contrast with the analogous three-dimensional two-component interacting Fermi gas, which exhibits a sign problem in the case of unequal masses, chemical potentials, and repulsive interactions. The one-dimensional system is be…
We use the functional renormalization group approach with partial bosonization in the particle-particle channel to study the effect of order parameter fluctuations on the BCS-BEC crossover of superfluid fermions in three dimensions. Our approach is based on a new truncation of the vertex expansion where the renormalization group flow of bosonic two-point functions is closed by means of Dyson-Schwinger equations and the superfluid order parameter is related to the single particle gap via a Ward identity. We explicitly calculate the chemical potential, the single-particle gap, and the superfluid…
We explore the impact of dimensionality on the scattering of a small bosonic ensemble in an elongated harmonic trap off a centered repulsive barrier, thereby taking particle correlations into account. The loss of coherence as well as the oscillation of the center of mass are studied and we analyze the influence of both particle and spatial correlations. Two different mechanisms of coherence losses in dependence of the aspect ratio are found. For small aspect ratios, loss of coherence between the region close to the barrier and outer regions occurs, due to spatial correlations, and for large as…
We experimentally and numerically investigate the expansion of initially localized ultracold bosons in homogeneous one- and two-dimensional optical lattices. We find that both dimensionality and interaction strength crucially influence these non-equilibrium dynamics. While the atoms expand ballistically in all integrable limits, deviations from these limits dramatically suppress the expansion and lead to the appearance of almost bimodal cloud shapes, indicating diffusive dynamics in the center surrounded by ballistic wings. For strongly interacting bosons, we observe a dimensional crossover of…
We unravel the stationary properties and the interaction quench dynamics of two bosons, confined in a two-dimensional anisotropic harmonic trap. A transcendental equation is derived giving access to the energy spectrum and revealing the dependence of the energy gaps on the anisotropy parameter. The relation between the two and the one dimensional scattering lengths as well as the Tan contacts is established. The contact, capturing the two-body short range correlations, shows an increasing tendency for a larger anisotropy. Subsequently, the interaction quench dynamics from attractive to repulsi…
We analyse the time-dependence of currents in a 1D Bose gas in an optical lattice. For a 1D system, the stability of currents induced by accelerating the lattice exhibits a broad crossover as a function of the magnitude of the acceleration, and the strength of the inter-particle interactions. This differs markedly from mean-field results in higher dimensions. Using the infinite Time Evolving Block Decimation algorithm, we characterise this crossover by making quantitative predictions for the time-dependent behaviour of the currents and their decay rate. We also compute the time-dependence of q…
A filtering method is introduced for solving the zero-range three-boson problem. This scheme permits to solve the original Skorniakov Ter-Martirosian integral equation for an arbitrary large Ultra-Violet cut-off and to avoid the Thomas collapse of the three particles. The method is applied to a more general zero-range model including a finite background two-body scattering length and the effective range. A cross-over in the Efimov spectrum is found in such systems and a specific regime emerges where Efimov states are long-lived.
We present a theoretical study of the ground state of the BCS-BEC crossover in dilute two-dimensional Fermi gases. While the mean-field theory provides a simple and analytical equation of state, the pressure is equal to that of a noninteracting Fermi gas in the entire BCS-BEC crossover, which is not consistent with the features of a weakly interacting Bose condensate in the BEC limit and a weakly interacting Fermi liquid in the BCS limit. The inadequacy of the 2D mean-field theory indicates that the quantum fluctuations are much more pronounced than those in 3D. In this work, we show that the …
